WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE MID-ATLANTIC FORUM?????

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

There seem to be NO MORE new Posts! It is becoming so much Ho-Hummm.....
Come on! Lets thinkg of a new Post that would entice the old kind of particiaption we used to have....

There ARE some old, worn out Posts......going on and on--that only a select audience keeps on posting to....
I am saddened--that every day that I log on and go to my "watched" Posts----there is nothing new or interesting....

Lets get some life back into this Forum!!!!! What do you all say? Pick a new topic and let it it roll....
Have most of you "escaped" to the Cubits web-site??? I have yet to get the hang of that....

I am thinking......and thinking....but have yet to come up with something interesting.....I seem brain dead....
NO Swaps going on---The doldrums time of year----Just Fall chores coming up.....(HEY! There's a topic!!!"....)

How about a good "Team Effort" on this??????

Gita

I think everyone from MA went to the "other" site

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SOOO? How can we get them back????

Those of us who have NOT gone over "THERE"--sure miss them!

COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Hello peeps!

Glad somebody was smart enough to start a thread to entice new participants like myself.

I am a gardener in transition. The gardening seed was planted in me many years ago .... but for the last few decades, I have not had much time to persue this interest.

In the spring of 2008, extensive exterior renovations of my property began .... they were not completed until the beginning of Oct, 2008.

I lost virtually all of the existing landscape.

As a result of retiring this past May, I now have the time and energy to focus on gardening.

The lack of siginificant rainfall in my area caused me to abandoning my endeavors to re-establish a lawn in the rear of my property (started in June .... gave up in July) Maybe i may make another attempt this fall.

Welcome merrymath! Glad you are here. Sounds like you have a 'blank canvas' to work on. I'm sure you will get plenty of help here from everyone and if you have any questions someone usually knows an answer (maybe even the correct one, lol).
Be sure to show us pictures as the yard progresses. We love pictures!

If you're planting seed, late summer or fall is probably a better time to start a lawn anyway, Mary.

Welcome to MAG! And congratulations on your retirement. Make sure you attend one of the plant swaps. We'll load you up with new things for your blank canvas. LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Welcome merrymath~~
hart got here first, fall is a better time for new grass, course you will have to sprinkle every day to keep the seed moist.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Mary--

Welcome!
You won't find a nicer bunch of people anywhere! Everyone is so helpful and generous.

YES! try to make the Seed Swap next Spring. Jill usually organizes it at the Frederick--at Chef Lin's Chinese Buffet. OR--the Plant Swap later on.
We eat, and eat....chat and Swap....

here's the link to the "pictures from the 2010 Seed Swap Post from last year...

Thanks for the warm welcomes.

If any one is planning on planting spring flowering bulbs .... check out these beauties .... I purchased 2 pkgs yesterday ... 12 nice size healthy bulbs per pkg .... $5.00/pkg .... part of proceeds donated to fight breast cancer.

PS ... I am tempted to buy more.

I am planning on visiting Pennsbury Manor on Sunday, Set 26th and take advantage of touring their gardens.

If I am lucky, maybe I can collect some free seeds.

For those of you not familiar with this wonderful out of the way place to visit .... I tracked down a little info

Pennsbury Manor, the reconstructed country estate of Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn, was built in 1939 and is beautifully situated on 43 acres along the Delaware River, just 24 miles north of Philadelphia. Visitors can experience 17th-century life through the furnished manor house, stables, bake and brew house, outbuildings, and formal and kitchen gardens. The site comes alive with costumed interpreters and period farm animals. Programs include the Colonial Crossroads Festival, Holly Nights, and Sundays at Pennsbury. Visitor services include tours, exhibits, an orientation film, and a museum store.

I plan to take pictures and post them for you.

Mary, welcome to the Mid-Atlantic Forum! Be sure to attend the winter seed swaps for the fellowship of the other members. You'll make friends and feel at home immediately on arrival, in addition to having a great meal. :-)

Gita, I can only speak for myself, but at this time of the year I am too busy to spend a lot of time on-line. Has the participation on this forum declined during warm weather in past years?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

David--

I really think many of our older "regulars" are spending more time on the "other" sire....
After all--you can talk about anything you want! One has to be a bit careful here....
I often wonder just how many of Dave's rules and restrictions still apply?????
Anyone know?

One has only so much free time to spend on the "C"....Whichever is more interesting--wins....

I love that Mary said that this Post might induce some "newbies" to jump in and participate--as they can start their own Posts and we all will help to "flesh it out"....
Jumping in on a L-O-N-G existing Post, where you don't know anyone --I even find that intimidating,
That is why I "LIVE" on the MAF.....

I think participation IS in a decline here.....I know I am bored with what is here now......
Trying to get a couple Posts going.....I did 2 already...YOUR turn! Teee....Heee..

You want to start one, David?????? Something intriguing and likely to get a lot of participation.
You are an awesome gardener.....surely you could think of something?????
Sometimes the simplest aspects of gardening draw the most Posts....

Just look at the recipe Forum!!! Mamma Mia!!! I have THREE--3" binders full of recipes by now--
all from DG. plus many more just printed out and saved in "My Documents/My Recipes."
We ALL love to eat!
We ALL love to garden!....

Nothing wrong with combining the two?

Hugs, Gita

Veggies chopped for "Indian Pickle" preserves.....

edited to add that---this is a humongous batch if it....A sweet/vinegary/piquant, vegetable relish.
Good to eat with anything--or by itself. Also--great to use up Green Tomatoes--or other not-so-ripe produce.
Many of us will be having these things in no time flat!

Mary, Welcome to the MA forum! This is Ric, Holly's SO, I usually sign my post so you can tell us apart. I'm familiar with your area, I lived there for 6-7 years in the early 70's and worked at the Yardley Florist while I was in Mercer County Community College. Ric

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Let me share a wee bit about myself.

I retired this past May after 31 yrs of teaching math. ... I spent 2 wks of May visiting my daughter in N Carolina ...both of her 2 daughters graduated from college.

I now spend a lot more time gardening. This year will be my first attempt at winter sowing.

This morning I raided a few neighbors recycle bins (it was a trash & recyclable day).

I was able to bring home 12 jugs for winter sowing.

Sooner or later neighbors are gonna start talking about me big time .... the recyclable scavenger they'll call me.

We're in Duck, North Carolina now, LOL Many DG'ers have eccentric ways, you'll fit right in. Ric

A major Virginia newspaper has created a new rule for their Letters to the Editor feature. One may not submit more than one Letter to the Editor in each three or four month time period. They have found that their submissions are better in general and cover more subjects. There is truly more space for different responders. The continuous strong position regulars department has been melded into a more ballanced flow of opinions. Apparently more and different folks have been motivated to write in by the new rule.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know a lot of people just went over to the other site simply because there's no membership fee.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

I think this site is worth the less than $0.06/day cost.

I am frugal ...but not cheap.

Question .... how many of you have had catarac surgery?

MARY

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Right eye in 2006.

David

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Just one eye?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Not yet! But I know i will have to in the next year or so....

Still getting by OK with my Tri-blended-progressive lensed glasses...

This month--i can go and get new glasses and frames....and my insurance will cover it....
Lucky me! Getting old has some benefits.....AND--still working when you ARE old--has even more....

I do not need health insurance from my employer--as i am on Medicare A and have B also (at the cost of $230/month with BCBS) --but i DO appreciate the Dental and Vision insurance they offer for quite reasonable rates....Also--Short Term Disability.....

I hear the cataract Surgery is a "breeze" nowadays......YEAH! Unless you are the one getting it!

To me--DG is priceless.....I don't need to go anywhere else....This IS my comfort zone.....

Gita

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Yeah, I had a really bad inflamation in the one eye that resulted in my eye becomming filled with floaters. It was like trying to see through a mass of seaweed in motion. The fluid in the eye was removed and replaced. When the doctor could then see into my eye he discivered that the inflamation had caused a catarac on the interior side of my lens. Therefore, another operation.

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Way back in the beginning someone tried to encourage me to move too. There was weak discussion of earning money in what sounded like a pyramid of sorts. I did not like the sound of anything I was hearing because I assumed a no re-enter clause would certainly have been in the bill of sales package agreements between the buyer and the seller. At that time I simply said to myself....there 'ain't no free lunch.....I'm staying right here and out of the rumble that seemed to be under way. If a seller had done that to me I would have been madder than an old wet hen.

In spite of any occasional differences of opinion the modest fee for what is available here is a very small outlay in comparison with any other educational or recreational activity I get involved with. In comparison just six evenings of adult education at Penn College, a division of Penn State University costs $175.00 average. Not all of those events are what might be expected either. My gym fees are in excess of $300.00 a year as a senior member. An evening with a nationally known artist can be in excess of $40.00 an hour for a two and a half hour show. Running all over the Northeast following a leading high school wrestler, football and baseball player raises unmentionable daily expense.
There may have been a few members who had bad situations or large families where $20.00 would make a difference. Yet that is still less than half a carton of one's favorite smokes or a few sodas and a bag of chips.

I enjoy this site and most of it's events or happenings. I don't run off to the local clubs or pubs. That saves $20.00 a day! I run off to the Internet for my continued education, fun and games. Excuse me for running off at the mouth a bit.

Doc ... if you think that picture might tempt me into thinking about dahlias for next year ...

Guess what

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Sadly I do not have those anymore. My health situation has taken me away from most garden work. I still have some miniature dahlias around the edges of the patio in pots. We mulched the dickens out of all of our beds to reduce the work loads. My grandson has become a good helper but his time to help me is limited. I am into reduced work loads planning. Just have to do it. My hands do not fit the hoe handle like they used to.

Glad you liked them. That bottle of wine cost someone more than $20.00. LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My mom had cataract surg for both eys, so long ago I can't date it. Never a problem. She sees much better than I do, and only uses occasional glasses. and they'd have at least ffifteen (20)? years to refine their techniques since then.

A friend had laser eye surg and his only problem was not using the lubricating eye drops the next day as directed to. I think there are no actual nerves in the eye structures that are involved.

You will find several of us retirees here, it is so nice to have more time to devote to our interests. It has been a slow summer here on the MA Forum. A combination of illnesses, injuries and family responsibilities has pulled some of us away as well. Ric and I have been traveling and will be home and gone for the next month or so. There is a lot to see here in the MA Forum. We have several threads with monthly blooms, projects and discussions. You might enjoy the projects threads they really give you a lot of ideas and there is one with containers that might give you some ideas for next years pots. Please don't be shy about posting and starting threads. Holly

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

HOLY!

Thanks for the encouraging words to Mary!
I have found her posting all over the place already! She is NOT shy!

So nice to have a new member be so "comfortable"---so quickly. She is all over--already!
Speaks volumes for this Forum! RIGHT?????

As for Posts to watch--My list is, again, to where it should be.
Lots of new Posts I have chosen to "watch"---and also a lot more action on the ones we already had....

Keep it up! Let's rejuvenate this Forum!!!! I am happy--so far---many more people are posting...
NEW people----OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!---now to get some of the oldies back....

Gita--a long time "oldie"......:o)

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Well, it did take me sometime to discover my locale was Mid-Atlantic and not North East.

I am a regular on a thread in the propagation forum …. Since I know so little, I figured it was a good place to learn. The regs on that thread are knowledgeable and often funny.

Tomorrow I plan to take pictures of my property and post them on a new thread titled:

THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE UGLY.

After all the exterior renovations to my property were done 2 years ago, all that remained was ONE very battered bush.

So most of my present good was a quick fix, which I am planning to redo.

My reason for inquiring about cataracts is due to the fact that I had cataract surgery performed on my right eye on Aug 19th. The left eye will have the same surgery performed on Sept. 16th.

It was not until sometime in July that I realized that I was almost blind in my right eye. Then I was informed that my left eye was not in too great a shape.

Presently, the vision in my right eye is so good, I no longer don a pair of eyeglasses.

Mary I'm not far from you at all and hang out on both forums

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Hello to all from Timmy Jo. I live in Sussex County, Delaware. Having grown up in Maryland as a beach kid on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, I love the mid-Atlantic!

I don't know what the Cubits Web site is, but I will continue my subscription here because it is chock-full of resources that can't be beat. Where else can you find accurate scientific information on plants and critters, make cyberfriends, upload pictures (with an instant copyright watermark), order hard-to-find specimens, and trade or give away plants and seeds?

The icing on the cake for me since joining was meeting two Dave's Garden authors here in cyberspace who have used my photographs in their articles. As an amateur photographer, this has opened the door of opportunity for me. Like I said, you cannot put a price on your Dave's Garden subscription.

I would like to help rejuvenate the Mid-Atlantic gardening forum. Thanks.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Timmy Jo-

Pass the word around your neck of the woods. Delaware is included in the Mid Atlantic...

Thanks for your input...I think this is starting to work.....Keep it up!

Can we see some of your pictures, please????

I must delay my presentation of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. ..... My daughter has my camera!

Miss FORGETFUL (me) forgot that I lent it to her yesteday.

She brought me several bags full of pots containing bulbs that were destine to the trash at her prochial school ..... and 4 to 5 pots that still had live lily stalks. So far I have only emptied 2 bags (6 fair size pots) with lily bulbs.

I just took a short break to grab a snack .... back to the remaining bags I go.

Mary

Albrightsville, PA(Zone 4a)

Really? We have to say 'other site'? Why does it have to be one or the other?
I think both sites have something to offer and it shouldn't be one against the other.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

because of the legal thing and hurt feelings,( blah blah blah) going on. Right now just say the "other" site...everyone will know what you're talking about.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

I am still cleaning up the mess from going through all those pots.

I was concern abount not having anything for a plant swap. Well now I do. I will have the white Easter lilies ..... enough for everyone.

By the way you spike my interest enough for me to visit ....dare I say .... the other site.

To me it appeared quite inactive ... and I really did look around a bit.

Maybe its the time of year ..... maybe they are all in school.

OK ... headed back outside again before it gets too dark.

be back later

Merrymath

My daughter lives in PA and I live in NC. So we are reversed.
I don't belong in the midAtlantic anywhere - but I am from NY and I do miss the north and love to read things from folks that get a blast and a dusting from Old Man Winter each year.

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Dear Gitagal:

For starters, if you go to my member page, you can see approximately 40 or so photos that have made it into the Plantfiles. I have a few Bugfiles uploaded as well. I'll work on sharing some photos in this forum real soon. It's not easy to come to Dave's Garden regularly ever since my computer went belly up with a nasty virus. Working on that.

I hope to be up and running with an all-new hard drive, new operating system, and new photo editing software--as soon as my husband puts it together. The icing on the cake would be a new DSLR camera (my first ever) as soon as I have enough saved up for one.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Timmijo,

I looked at all your pictures...Nice!

I have pictures I need to add to PF's--but never get around to it....

Should just make a list and DI IT!!!!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I am very glad that Gita wrote this post. We all needed a kick :-) Ok, I should stop here and go post a few things :-)
