LOL Gita ..... good for you! And good for business too.
WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE MID-ATLANTIC FORUM?????
Gita, LMK where the new thread. tyvm also if you good people have a BJ's close to you & your belong, they have lots of Christmas cactus (HUMONGOUS ones) left over that are done blooming & they don't water them, marked $ 9.99. I told the mgr of ours today that they are done blooming, nobody is interested in them when they are naked, your people haven't watered them, which causes shrink (if & when they die, no more profit) and how much would you sell me one for? She told me $ 5.00 & I took a lovely yellow flowered one home where it is soaking in water. (the pot was in a white crock).
ooh, Buttoneer, good one--now you have me convinced I should try my luck at Lowe's- they may have the same kind of struggling post Xmas plants.
My Mom has a huge CC and it is filled with buds most aren't opened yet but they will be soon. I still have some of the cuttings I got from Doc last year. They are doing well but not growing very quickly and no flower buds yet.
Holly
can you get a picture of your Moms' CC when they open? I'd love to see.
Carolyn
Gita, please do not change your forum...........that was not my intent. This is a wonderful group and I would hope we could stay this way for a long time. i am just frustrated that in order to find answers, it takes me hours of going into different forums to see if they are discussing what my question pertains to. If not, God forbid you ask a question that is off topic. If you think we can get people here on this group that can answer some of my questions, I would love to see you give it a try.
For example, There are so many people out there that I know do not know how to tell the difference between the Thanksgiving and Christmas Cactus. There are pictures we could share and show the difference in the stems that show us .
That is why I thought a forum for General Discussions of Holiday Cactus would be helpful. People would see there is one and go there to talk about anything they wanted to that pertained to the Holiday Cactus. Over the winter months would be a great time for us to learn more.
You do a great service to those customers at your work and that is tremendous and I think you and I are similiar....we love to learn and we love to share our ideas and facts we have learned over the years. DO NOT CHANGE THIS GROUP. YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL GROUP OF PEOPLE
We are all just mid Atlantic people also, and there are so many others out there who would join in if they knew it was open to all Holiday Cactus people. How can we combine the two? That may not be possible, but I am open for anything and all suggestions. You are all so great. Thanks alot for your thoughts.
Lets all get out heads together and see how this can be made to happen. Maybe if we make a Holiday Cactus Forum under the Mid Atlantic the word will spread and more people will join in. Again, just thinking out loud.
J ..... I am actually a mid-westerner, but love this group!!!! I am one of those people who do not know the difference in the cactus. They look the same to me. :-)
What is BJ's? We may not have that store here. Gita .... keep us the good work!!!!!
Patti
JB-
Let's start a thread here in the MA forum and go from there. I know a lot of us have CC's and just love them. We can also invite others that are interested - perhaps even dmail those that are discussing cc's on the epi thread could be invited. Your thoughts?
Also, I do know somebody that is really into the CC's more than anything else. I will contact her as well..... and I know that Doc sent me some wonderful information via Dmail......
It won't cost us anything to try. JB - you start the thread and I'll contact my friend....
Let's wait and see what Gita says. This is her forum and I do not want to take anything away from it. I agree we could do it under the Mid Atlantic, but will people find us is my question. We will get it done Carolyn, but we do not want to change this wonderful group that would spoil our friendships and conversations Too bad we can not just add a SUB section for HCactus. LOL Gita may want to start it here too. Wait until she gets back on here and we can discuss it further.
JB - that is fine - I d think we have to show admin the need first for them to create the new forum.
Here is the response from Adm. You are absolutely correct and I can understand why.
Now we need to decide what we want to do.
Hi Jacquie,
Thank you for the suggestion! Historically, most new forums began as a "grass roots" effort - a member posts the suggestion in the Dave's Garden forum here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/dg
As administrators, we watch such threads pretty closely to see how much interest is generated by the topic. After several days (possibly even a few weeks) of monitoring the thread, we can get a "feel" for the level of sustained interest, take the suggestion under advisement and make a decision.
Please feel free to propose your idea in the DG forum (link above) and we'll see what happens - good luck!
Happy Gardening,
Melody
JB--You are so sweet!
Please do not worry! I am not a person who thinks she "owns" a Post.
It is just common courtesy that others should not go and move it on.
As I said--I will do that tonight when I get home from work.
I never said I was going to change a Forum. Just start part #2 of this
one. We always link old to new--and new back to old.
That way there can be a continuum. I too love this Group and
would never abandon the nice people here.
There is a differnce between a "Forum" and a "Post".
"Forums" consist of assorted "Posts"--and Posts consist of
a pile of entries, comments, pictures, questions and answers.
Anyone can start a new Post---totally!
Mine is this one. I started it when so many people went
to the "other site' and communication just about died on the MAF.
This Post re-energized many of us, and we even gained
some new people far and wide---such as yourself....
We have a sort of "unwritten practice" here that when a Post gets
200 or more entries--it is moved up to a Part #2 or #3 or some even Part #14
This helps those that may still have dial-up. (Anyone here???)
If you know how to start a new Post--go ahead and do it.
Since it is YOUR idea--your name should be on the new Post-not mine
.
Just go to the MA Forum (as always) and scooch all the way to the bottom,
past all the Topics and, at the bottom, there will then be the spaces
to start a new Post.
Put in your title (keep it semi short--as there are limits) and then write
something in the Posting space expressing whatever you want re this
new Post. Reasons--welcoming all to participate, share pictures, etc....
Go ahead! I think it is a great idea...You will then "own" that Post.
Gita
Carolyn, I will be glad to post a few pics of my Mom's CC when it opens. I thought I might have a pic from last year but I haven't found it.
JBerger, Anyone can start a new thread in any of the Forums. There are a lot of people here in the Mid-Atlantic Forum with a lot of knowledge of CC, and some of the similar plants. I think a new Thread on the topic would get some interest. I have to run now but if no one starts a CC Thread I can do it when I get back.
Holly, we are trying to decide the best location for a General discussion Forum for Holiday Cacti.............I am getting more information from the Administration and will post it here for you all to see. Then we will decide where we want to start the forum.. Starting it is NOT the problem. It is where to start it so everyone can benefit and find it.
JB--
Could such a Thread exist in 2 places?
I know I do not frequent other Forums all that much...
We could keep it just here--if Adm. says NO!
Gita
Hello everyone, here is my last conversation with Melody.
I sent this to Melody:
Melody, if we started our discussion group on your link you listed above, where on the Forum Index would it be located so people could find us? That is the problem as I see it...how can people find a discussion group on Holiday Cactus? We can start our topic but if people do not know where we are it is a waste of time. J
She replied:Hi Jacquie,
Folks usually come to the Dave's Garden Forum for news about the site, and historically requests for new forums are started here. If you want, you could start a thread there and link it to a cross post in another forum. We discourage cross-posting in multiple forums, but a link to one would be ok. The Forum index wouldn't give details of the request, just a s the Forum index doesn't give topics of any other threads. If we get enough response, the new forum would be created and it would be indexed under the Specific Plants column.
Happy Gardening,
Now I think it is a matter of deciding where to begin. Use the link on DG Discussion and pray we get enough action that it will eventually get put up as a new listing on the Alphabetical Listing of all DG Forums or do we just post it here and hope people join us.
We do have a lot of interest here, but are they interested in keeping a new topic going on would they just rather discuss it as we are now. I am sure there are people on this group who could care less about Christmas Cactus and therefore it is not fair to them to keep hammering away on the subject. I will start it when the time comes. I want to hear from Gita first and see what she thinks would be the best for everyone. JB
melody
JB--
I think we cross posted.....
You hold me in too high a postition----I do not wish to 'decide" on this
--only express my opinions. You are doing great all on your own....:o)
If we all (here) want to support JB's quest for a new Forum--then lets
go the the Daves Garden Forum and vote "YES" for this new Forum,
when it gets proposed.
NOW--This may be a good time for me to move this over....
I realize it will leave some questions un answered, but we are now
to 255 Posts and it is time....
Lets continue on Part #2...

/Gita, this bronchial/sinus thing is a virus but it can last 4-6 weeks!!! As told to me by my physician's assistant when I got it . I had it until 11/15. Every week I would go to the Dr & he would try another antibiotic. It was almost gone when we took the camper down to Thermal City Campground & Gold Mine in Union Mills, NC (google it), and it came back with a vengeance. While down there, (I was out of antibiotics for a 3rd time, different one each time), I bought a bottle of cough syrup and benadryl. Was taking the for a week. DH wanted to stay another week but I was so sick & there was a rainy, windy (tornado warnings) front coming in & we left for home / after being down south for a week. I went to see the Dr. 10/26, and he prescribed Zithromax (Z-pack) 5 days for me and it knocked it out but constapated me so badly, I tried everything & the only thing that worked was 3 TBSP castor oil. I hope I didn't give the nasty evil stuff to anybody down there. If I had a dollar for each time I coughed, I wouldn't need to win the lottery, s/o I know what you are going through. Don't take chances with this awful stuff. Get the Zithromax (Z-pack) if you are able to take it and know that stuff out. I had it from 9/30-11/15 and was so weak, it took me a couple weeks to rest up & get my strength back.
Buttoneer--
I read in one of the links above that 90% of all Bronchitis is viral.
Antibiotics do not really help any virus infections--they just have to run their course.
I have a Dr. appt. this morning. They were closed most of last week and this Monday--
so I had to go to the "Patient First" clinic. They want you in and out fast...as there are
always people waiting...
I still wonder if the Dr. attending me even considered that this may be viral?
She only prescribed the 2 meds. for a week. The week was over yesterday.
I am better--but still cough a lot. But it is easier...
Many people at work are sick--and those that have a similar coughing say that
it can go as long as 4 weeks...
Mi e started long before I went to the clinic..so, I am also close to 4 weeks already.
Mostly--I feel bad coughing so much at work when I sit with 2-3 other people nearby.
I keep the sanitizer right next to me and wipe down my computer, keyboard, phone and mouse
when I leave.
Thanks for replying....do you know we started a Part #2 on this Thread?
The link is right above your post....
I DO understand that it is hard to jump to a new Thread if what you are replying to
is all on this Thread....I like continuity myself....
Gita
