Miscellaneous Shots - Part 5

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yeah, kind of... as long as the tide wasn't unusually high we were safe, the peninsula is only about 50' wide at any one point, sticking out into LI sound by about 2 miles. (lol)

We were near Pirl's estate today, I'll tell 'ya exactly where tomorrow, after I finish sorting out today's pics! ☺

Thanks everyone, I took you all along 'in spirit'! ☺

Well, thinking DW was going to choose something closer for our Friday adventure she choose Orient Point, LI as yesterday's destination. Another part of LI which we had never been to. I had driven all day the day before and it was her turn this time so I was able to take some pics along the way.

To get to Orient Point we had to go through Southhold and Long Island's wine country. The houses along the start of Southold on Main St. were colonial types, some very old and many unfortunately in disrepair and/or abandoned. They weren't ugly though, they were attractive even in their weathered conditions. There were many houses with architecture from a long, long time ago, - they added to the 'ambiance'. Sprinkled here and there along the way were long driveways leading to private estates and bed & breakfast establishments. The feeling was very laid back, casual and not 'touristy' like so many other artificially constructed tourist spots.

* (Though I don't care for collages I thought it would be best to use them this time to save space and not 'hog' this thread, lol)

The striking part about LI's wine country is that there are so many wineries. Within a very small area, for all the wineries visible from the road there were just as many wineries which simply had arrows pointing to narrow long dirt roads disappearing among grape fields. In all honesty to say we passed two dozen establishments within 10 miles would be a conservative estimate.

Farmland is just beyond the wineries heading East, both wholesale and retail nurseries specializing in privets, crepe myrtles, sod farms and even huge nurseries lined the road, with immense greenhouses containing many of the plants & bushes sold in more urban stores.

Getting closer to our destination we reached the town of Greenport. A nice little town with many shops and restaurants, again the feeling was not touristy, it was very relaxed which I liked very much, (- and I'm hard to please when it comes to that, I totally frown on 'tourist traps'). This however was very nice, a place I would look forward to taking a stroll and spending ½ the day just hanging out and checking out the little shops. In fact the business district seemed nicer than individual districts of the Hamptons, Port Jefferson or Sag Harbor, maybe because the stores were so plentiful and close together...

Finally we reached out destination, Orient Point State Park. A long well kept road takes you though the park, it's has a very airy feeling, sort of a combination of woodsy and marine. You don't get that 'claustrophobic, stagnant, dark tree canopy' kind of feeling here. It's very environmentally conscious and they have, checkerboards on some tables, horseshoe pitching areas, volleyball nets, canoe rentals, trails (albeit limited), and a large playground for children ages 2-5 yrs. The main attraction is of course the beach on Gardiners Bay. Admittedly I prefer the huge, rough waves of the Southern shores on the Atlantic, but this was nice for a family outing with waters which were calm and forgiving for those who prefer not to fight the waves. Wooden picnic tables with park grills and pavilions were conveniently placed about.

On the way back home we decided to stop and check out Orient Point's ferry port. These ferries leave for New London CT and other points thereof. A small fleet of charter fishing boats is also docked here. Adjacent to the port there's also a U.S. Government port with a ferry to Plum Island, (a restricted access Island used for infectious disease research.)

They're a bargain at 1.1M, but I prefer them further from the main road myself...
