Tropical Garden # 80

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Gagirl, they told me to plant in the shade...I looked at plant files and it says height of 18" ??? Nursery said 4 x 4 so before I put it in the ground I need to verify height/spread a bit.
I'll see if I can snag some pieces off the Rose Mallow and root. I got them as very small plants 3 years ago. They can get up to 6 -7 feet tall. odd that I've not tried to root one yet ??? ! but I don't get any breakage damage and usually any little piece of something that breaks off I root.
I just woke up ( see previous post up in the middle of the night0 and need to go have some coffee and get out side.........D's SO is already out there in the "cottage garden fiasco" weeding.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Texasgal, I have pink rose mallow and red Texas star hibiscus seeds if you want any. dmail me. Here is a picture of the light pink rose mallow.

GA girl, I had two stromanthes last year. One in a pot and one in the ground. I protected the one in the pot over the winter and it still croaked. I covered the one in the ground (shady spot) with palmetto fronds and it made it through the winter with no problems. I would love to see one that was 4' x4', I didn't think they got that largebut it would be awesome.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

ardesia,
Plant files says they get to around 2 feet. I'm planting mine back under our Oak Hammock in a shady area where I can protect it over the winter. I was hoping it was only going to get around 2 feet or I'd have to pick a different spot.

Blackshear, GA

They do get tall, I saw some at the Botanical garden in D.C. and they were about 4 ft tall. So pretty, but I am sure that is in ideal growing conditions.

I am considering putting a wick in the one pot I have left. I think they need constant moisture. It seems to be one of those that you have to experiment with, to find what it likes.

Red Oak, TX

Hello Everyone!

Happy_1, thanks, maybe they will come back to visit soon, I do miss them though!

mjsponies, next time have a Cuba Libre instead of tea for dinner, you will sleep like a baby!
My DD bought me Stromanthes for my B. day a couple years go. They were 3ft, she paid $65 at the farmers market, later in the same week I found two very nice plants at Lowe's for $2. It had blooms the following year and slowly went downhill from there. I know that they like lots of water and deep shade.

GAgirl1066, my greenhouse is 18' x 36' and is over 10 years old. If I had to do it over, I would be sure to put vents on the roof. I keep all of my potted and bare root plants in that one. I will have to get some help this year. Taking them in is a gradual process, starting with the tender tropicals and waiting until right before the first freeze, then take the bananas and plumerias in.

LiliMerci, that is a very pretty color on your Hibiscus!

I know what you mean about the 'taking in'. I have one gh 12x36 and 2 that are 8x16. I stuff those as much as I can and then I have to put up plastic all around my covered deck which is probably 12x30. Of course I bring as many as I can inside and in the garage. I usually start when night temps are in the 50, I start with my orchids and work from there. It is definately a pain, but I can't stand the thought of any of them dying.

Here is my deck that I enclose...

jewel orchid

Thumbnail by GAgirl1066

Great pictures everyone. GAgirl1066, is that jewel orchid picky to grow?

Rita, thanks for letting me know that about your Cyrtosperma J. acting the same way as mine. Someone did send me a note on a couple of things that may be going on so I am going to "tweak" some things concerning it and hope for the best. Beautiful Philo's. you posted earlier but then again I have never veiwed an Aroid or any plant from you that is not.

mjsponies, I agree with Hap. concerning the Philodendron hederaceum vine you asked about. It is super easy to grow and I also agree with you on the rose mallow's. Those buggers are tough as nails and bloom their heads off regardless.

Mjs, I have the pink one, but would love to have cuttings of the reds. You might want to wait until fall when it cools off. I'd be glad to pay postage on them. The Post Office has flat rate boxes. Cuttings only need to be 6-8 ". They might even fit in a padded envelope.

Lilli, I'd be glad to try seeds of the red. I'll reimburse your postage! Thanks!

Rachel,
The jewel orchid, for me, is very easy. It just sits in its little pot in the window and seems to be happy. I water it and fert. every now and then.

Red Oak, TX

Hello Everyone!

GAgirl1066, those are all my favorite!! If you remember the name of the red hibiscus, please let us know. It is such a nice color!
My red cestrum came back, but is only about 1" tall.
I have to say hands down, that your collection of plants is way more than mine, it just seems as if I have a lot because I keep posting the same plants over and over. lol

Inspired by Joeswife pots, I made a planter from this Garage sale mirror.

Garage sale light fixture, made into a hanging basket with rescued Lowe's Bromeliads. They will perk up after we get some rain. 30% chance today equal zero.

Warning; ugly picture, but I am proud of my job.

RachelLF, thanks, I am glad to hear that you got professional help for your Cyrtosperma Johnstonii. I promise that if I ever find one again, I will buy it.
I am reluctant to offer advice since all my knowledge is from experience and hearsay. I have no formal training in botany.
Lucky you, getting the sky blue vine to flower for you. Mine is all vine and no flowers whatsover.

noid Philo.

GAgirl1066, thanks for letting me know that about your jewel orchid. I alway's figured they would be too picky to grow so I have always steered away from them. I admire the foliage on them and yours is very pretty and healthy.

Rita, I am dumber than a box-o-rocks when it comes to plants. I am one of those that live and learn with each plant as I go and I have got to say that I love the idea of what you done with that light fixture and I am terrible with Bromeliads!

I think I had better get some more "sluggo".

prita,
I have posted the red hib on the ID forum and Hib forum and no one can come up with a name. There are some that looks similiar but not exact. It is really pretty. The flowers are a deep burgandy and the leaves are small. Love the arrangements.

Rachel,
I am about to try to root some cuttings of the jewel orchid. I have read that they are easy to root, I will let you know.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Prita,
Wow.....I am soooooooooo jealous of your "mirror" planter ! Was that a frame? did you take the mirror out, cause I couldn't tell if it was there. Love the light fixture planter too !
Here's one I made over the weekend...25 cent birdcage...cuttings of various plants...so it needs to fill in.

Jewel Orchid is very pretty, what's the bloom like?

Thumbnail by mjsponies

That is very kind of you GAgirl;-).

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Rachel,
Is that what causes the holes in the leaves? I thought they only ate the roots.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

texasgal, i'll be glad to give you the seeds. dmail and remind me in a week or so. They should be dry by then.

mjsponies, those darn slug/snails will eat holes in the foliage of many plants. It can be a battle at times but Sluggo and beer sure does aid with the problem. There are also other culprit's that chew on the leaves of plants as well. Are you lucky enough that you do not have to deal with such there in your part of Florida?

Blackshear, GA

mjs,
Here is the bloom...definately does not compare bloom wise to other orchids, but it is more noted for its foliage.

I can't find the one in bloom, will post it later.

Good Morning All.

Rita, that mirror and light fixture are brilliant. I'm a dumpster-diver from way back and you have given me the incentive to start again. Well done.

I also have your noid phil., but I don't think it's a true philo. Can't remember the name, but I do remember it nearly died with this past Winter. Fried to a crisp but is coming back nicely.

mjs. Decent birdcage. Very inventive.

You young whipper-snappers are giving me ideas. Now if you will come here and plant a 30 year old tree so I can hang stuff on, I would be so appreciative. LOL

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Happy - Even tho we have a lot of Oaks...NONE are up near the house.....So I'm severely lacking for shade near the house. I used to have alot of the vines running up the walls of the house, but I didn't put any up this spring as we are planning on painting the outside of the house. I've got a pretty tall Crepe Myrtle that shades one corner of our front porch, which before we put the sun blocking screen on it was too hot to sit on in the afternoon/evening as it faces southwest. My ex and I went round and round about putting in some trees close to the house, now he's been gone for awhile and I'm working on getting something ( short of those tree's with the great big leaves everyone hates cause they blow all over the place)...Got one oak going in the back, but it's still small.
here's my "fertilizer spreader" planter. I've got a red passion flower, some eggplant and lion's tail seedlings in desperate need of planting ! How's that for diversity ! LOL...

Love your planter, mj....sorry about the trees.

Hello Everyone!

RachelLF, we will learn and grow together! You have impressed me with your knowledge of plants quite a few times aleady.
Keep those snails away from those beautiful Anthurums, sluggo did the job for me, but I still like to squash them underfoot.

Bromeliads are easy!

GAgirl1066, keep me in mind if you ever get seeds or cuttings from your burgundy hibiscus. I will have a few variegated and gold crinums that will be big enough to trade this fall, if you are interested.

mjsponies, I could kick myself for not buying a birdcage at the same garage sale that I bought the mirror. I did get an old milk jug that I painted silver, but have no idea what to do with it.
There is a mirror in the lower half of the planter, the top half broke.
Your spreader planter seems to be in good shape, it will be lovely when all those plants start to fill in.

I thought that this planter with Blue Daze was pretty this morning, but failed to capture the pink Jatrophia in back, that is always blooming.

Happy_1, Thanks, Happy dumpster diving!
I am always embarassing my family in the fall by picking up all the bags of leaves left for the trash. dh refuses to go with me.
It is always good to hear another plant survival story. I am still suffering fallout from the bad winter. This whipper-snapper will be 59 next month.

Have you see a Pregnant Onion?

Hello Rita,

I am sorry that I just realised after being in the hospital and home and taking pictures here and there that I heas so surprised tonight to find the white butterfly ginger and the rare ginger really took to there good spot. I will bring them in soon for the winter. I thank you so much for sending it to me now if if i can find the other things.

Rita, you are a baby.....Next month I will be 70! (Now who said that???)

There is a FL website here, Galloping Gardeners...which I named a number of years ago. I even have the T-Shirt naming me as the Dumpster Diving Queen. So much fun.

I still roam my neighborhood looking for stuff. The next door neighbor tossed out all these louvered doors from closets I presumed, so they were dragged in the garage. They are now happy hiding the hurricane shutters that are pulled back when not in use. She also put out two toilets which I told my DH that I wanted to use for planters on each side of the driveway. The poor man almost had the Big One. LOL

So much gardening fun.

Take care, kids.

prita,
I would love to have the varg and gold crinums. I have never tried to root that particular hib, but I will try to root some tomorrow and see how it does. I have found that hib cuttings usually don't do well in the mail, at least I haven't had luck with them. I have a cranberry hibiscus and all you have to do is stick that thing in the ground and it will root. Do you have that one? Its beautiful, the leaves are burgandy and the flowers are a red/burgandy. It grows huge 10-12 feet tall or more in one season.

Ahh, talk about dumpster diving....my son and I have found a nice leather coffee table, a gas leaf blower ( he worked on it and got it running), a battery charger, 2 old cigarette ash holders, last week he found a nice business printer, and it still prints. He is only 17, but loves to fix things. It definately goes back to the saying 'one mans junk is a another woman's treasure' LOL

Here is the hib...
