Hoya lacunosa - variegated leaf variety which actually is called a "Speckled" leaf....
I LOVE this one can't wait for it to bloom, which might be next year......since it has to recover from "retail h*ll"

Metrosideros, I will be sure to take a picture the next time it blooms, and make note of the correct name. I appreciate your help!

RachelLF, I forgot to say that I am addicted to e-bay as well. After mentioning to my dh that all the bugs in my garden probably came on the plants from e-bay, I promised not to buy any more for a while. I had a relapse and bought a Frangipani vine last night. I have never seen or heard of this plant before and am very excited about my new purchase.

RachelL, what is the name of this little cutie?

Thumbnail by prita

Pensacolagrden, thanks but it seems as if I have the snails under control. I used sluggo and Diatomaceous earth, If I ever see them again I will be sure to set out a few containers of beer for them to enjoy!!

Texasgal77, I did purchase two new palms from Lowe's as well, they are Malayan coconut. I love to try new plants! I hope that they do not grow as fast as the Queen Palm, which I will have to cut way back in order to fit in the 9' tall hoop house.

mjsponies, nice buy on the Hoyas!!! The foliage on Hoya Curtisii is very pretty. Even though I got a few good buys from Lowe's, I am jealous of your variegated hoyas.
I have two hibiscus plants that are very pretty even without any blooms.
This is Hibiscus Snow Queen, there are better pictures in plant files, showing just how beautiful the foliage is.

This is Hibiscus acetosella.

mjsponies, great buy on those Hoya plants and they look very healthy to boot. I recently purchased a Philodendron from the clearance rack at Lowes for a dollar. It was not healthy at all but it is coming back quite nicely. Patience can be a virtue sometimes.

Another pretty plant from Debra. Thank you;-)

Thumbnail by

Rita, that plant was tagged Peperomia argyreia (Watermelon peperomia) and that is a very pretty Caricature plant you have. I am also looking forward to seeing your Frangipani vine as well.

New leaf on Cyrtosperma johnstonii but I am asking for help from all of you have tried growing or are growing this plant. My plant is starting to yellow around the edges and tips on some of the leaves. I am thinking it may be a nutrient problem? Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck trying to get that Queen Palm in the hoop house!

We had the plumerias under the patio and then hung Industrial strength shower curtains all the way around. This year they may have to go in the garage. I don't want to chance losing any more of them. I sure hope that it doesn't get as cold this year!

Most coconut trees cannot take a freeze whatsoever......Do you have a garage you could put it in?

Good luck!

Good Morning, All.

Rita. I don't think that you can cut any palms back, for they grow from a central core and once that core is gone, so is the palm.

Dave...are you here????????

It's true about the coconut palms. This Winter nearly did mine in. They still have a lot of dead fronds hanging and the ones that weren't killed immediately, show the grey/wind burn. YUK!

Prita,
Soon as the Hoya lacunosa gets a bit more growth I'll root some for you.
I have the H.acetosella Red Shield, one of the few Hibiscus I grow. Never seems to be bothered by pests.
I dug up two huge Confederate roses last year that were loaded with blooms AND White flies that I couldn't get rid of, I got so mad one day I sprayed them down for the gazillionth ( lol sp?) then took a sheet and threw over each plant tied it at the bottom to keep as many of the little buggers from escaping then dug them up and took them to the burn pile and burned them. No more white fly problem.
Here's the Red Shield

Another one, noid "Rose Mallow" tough as nails, blooms ok when it's really dry, is a work horse when we are getting good rain, no bugs either.

Metro,
I used to have a big Gardenia years ago, it was very old and finally was doing so poorly I took it out. I've been thinking of another one, and the dwarf looks interesting. Does it have the same fragrance ?

Rachel, Yup - you can ( at least here) get some deals at Lowes. We've nicknamed the clearance rack the "rescue rack". When ever I have to go into town, ( about an 8 mile drive one way) I run around and try to do everything at the same time including swinging into lowes and checking their clearance rack.
Picked up a Philodendron micans, very soft velvety leaves with a pretty red tinge to them. New to me so any growing hints are appreciated.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

msj,

I grow the Micans right along with the common P. Pretty plant. Enjoy.

I don't remember someone giving me this ginger, but it's a nice surprise this morning. The leaves look just like all my white butterfly gingers so I don't know how long this fella been out here.

Hi mjsponies!

I think the cultivar is the "Daisy Gardenia", and it is fragrant. My bush has gotten about two ft. tall in about ten years.

Hi Dave,

What about cutting the palm back?

Hap

Keaau, HI

Hi Happy!

Cutting the palm back will injure it. A 9' hoop house is way too small for a large palm. If the heart is injured it will die.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Dave. I thought that was the case.

Rita, you may want to have a second thought about those palms.

RachelLF, that is a nice flower from Debra, mine are gone for the season. I would like to reseed the zinnias for a little fall color, if it ever start raining again.
I am no help with your Cyrtosperma Johnstonii. I love them all but am an expert at none. Mine died a few years ago, but never seems to get more than three leaves at a time. As soon as a new leaf emerges, the old one turns yellow and fades away.
I remember that Tropicbreeze and Texasbigleaves are growing them quite successfully. If they ever drop by, perhaps they could tell you why your leaves are turning yellow around the edges.
Thanks for the Peperomia argyreia!! I love it, now I can take care of it properly.

Texasgal77, I do have a GH for my potted tropicals, you can see it in the bakground of the picture. I am afraid that when the palms get to a certain size, I will have to get rid of them. I am always trying to find Dwarf varieties of new Plants.
These are a few Dwarf plumerias.

mjsponies, thanks for your kindness. I would love a start of your new Hoya after you have enjoyed it for a while!! I also appreciate the Red Hibiscus bloom pictures, it is a lovely bright color. I have had mine for a while without any blooms, but the foliage make it worth the trouble having to bring it in every winter.
Knock-on-wood, no white flies here as yet.

LiliMerci, those are lovely!! Mine are just now showing a little color. Most of the time I would smell them before I see them.

Happy_1, I mispoke when I said "cut them back". I meant, trim the leaves off. But unfortunately, I will have to lose this one come winter. It is way too big to get covered. I do have a Fishtail Palm growing to take its place.
You can see where I cut last years limbs off, and the top of the Hoop House.
Thanks for helping, sometimes it is hard to let plants go that you have raised from a baby.

Metrosideros, thanks again for your advice!
I hope that you have that lovely gardenia planted at your front entrace, where you can inhale the fragrance coming and going.

prita, this cultivar pictured above is not as fragrant as the white butterfly gingers. Those I do smell right away. And my asian jasmine too. I can smell those when I'm watering my plants.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

I know I have said this before, but this is just the best group of folks I have had the PRIVILEGE of talking with. You guys just ROCK ! And in not an "too polite for my breeches" kind of way....just plain good people.
mj

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

haha...yep, just plain ole folks here! I love the red rose mallow......I'll take cuttings if anyone has any to spare!

My butterfly ginger came back from the roots and is about two feet tall but has not bloomed. They are in pots. I fed them with Miracle Grow in the early Spring.......what else can I give them to encourage them to bloom? Thanks!

GROUP HUG HERE.....GROUP HUG HERE!!!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

it is a great group here. no dramas, just sharing beautiful flowers. I don't feed my gingers anything but they love sun! The white butterfly gingers tends to be late bloomers. Bloom booster probably doesn't hurt it.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

RIta, what zone are you in? I was watching the queen palms this past winter at my son's home in Jacksonville, FL, and right here in the SC Lowcountry (both 9a). I noticed that those that were well taken care of and well fertilized actually did very well. They all had some fried leaves but with a haircut they came right back and are looking good. Others in commercial locations that are pretty much ignored did not fare as well and while they appear to be alive it is slow growing.

Red Oak, TX

LiliMerci, I find that the fragrance is much stronger in the early morning and in the evenings. I have mine planted next to my walkway, where I am constantly putting the flowers to my nose.
I do agree that the fragrance of the white butterfly ginger is hypnotizing, and are planted in the very back yard.

mjsponies, I think that you rock, for saying those nice words!! Anyone that loves animals and flowers is always #1 in my opinion.

Philo. Gigas.

Texasgal77, I am sorry that I do not have the Red Rose Mallow.
Hopefully someone else will chime in with a few cuttings for you.

Like LiliMerci, I have my butterfly ginger planted in the ground. I would give them a little Miracle Gro fertilizer
occasionally. They are hardy in my zone, but find that they need some shade and lots and lots of water. They would lay flat on the ground if I ever forget to water them.

Happy-1, Group Hug !! I always wondered what happened to Sunshinesw and Dutchlady, they always posted pictures from Florida. I miss them.

This is my prettiest Philo.

ardesia. I am in zone 8a, the palm is planted in the ground, and would be a bugger trying to transplant it.
I did notice that the Windmill and Mediterranean Palms that I have in my flowerbeds where they get watered and fertilized often, made it through the winter. The few that were not attended to, did not make it.

Hi Rita,

Sunshine is still on Dave's, but I think Dutchlady, (Hetty) has gone to cubits. Such a a loss for all of us. Sunshine posts on the FL threads.

Hugs

Hap

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

cubits is too confusing for me...
Ummm, maybe that's part of the problem w/ my poor to orphan Ginger's...they need to get watered more, and maybe fed once in awhile........I'll try to do better with that.
D's SO and I were out running around today and stopped by one of the few nurseries "near" about 15 miles....and I got this in their Bargain Barn...she told me what it was but I didn't write it down and now I can't remember........begins with an "S"...hardy in my zone, likes Shade...can get to about 4 x 4 feet........

Thumbnail by mjsponies

My butterfly gingers do look sad in the middle of the afternoon, but the water perks them right back up. I had some in part shade and they do bloom there but the ones in the sun have more blooms.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

texasgal, I can get cuttings of the Rose Mallow for you when I trim them back.
errr, made the mistake of having a glass of Ice Tea w/ dinner.... no sugar, but never the less I've been wide awake since 3:00 am

Blackshear, GA

mjs,
Its Stromanthe tricolor. I think they are beautiful, but do not have luck with them. I have one that is barely hanging on. If you get yours to stay like that and grow, please let me know its growing conditions.

Prita, how big is your gh? You seem to have so many plants, how do you get them all in there? I just love looking at everyones pictures, I see so many things to add to my 'gotta have' list.

Do the rose mallow root from cuttings also? I have never tried that.
