Wow, nice blooms and pictures, everyone. I have to show this one, I have about 5 brugs blooming and I caught the main pollinator at his job.
Rita, I have stripped almost all my brugs and morning glorys save a few tip leaves so far. I then wash the remaining stalk, tip, nubs, and rootball in a WARM ( almost tepid) Spray of a couple drops of soap, a little milk, a tablepoon of bayer 3 in 1 and then empty the bottom of the water bottle to into the soil. I keep the leaves I plucked full of mites in a paper bag, stuff it into a plastic sack and close and put into the trash. Then I go in a wash my hands and face and neck, and spray myclothes with Watsons bug spray. LOL I know, I am weird. In the fall, I use this ame solution in the sink, and then rinse under the tap with clean hot water. It seems to kill what ever is inside of the system. Hot soapy water in the soil mite help.
MJs, I got a piece RG and I can't remember if it was rooted or not, but if you got a cutting, I would put it into a large community tub with potting mix that will retain moisture a bit,, and stuff the cutting two thirds into the soil line. All the vines I do like this end up rooting, and I do this with roses and salvias and coleus. I am going to try that method inside this winter, but I am using some kind of clear top to keep over them to see what that will do.Lady M will give me a nice red bloom tommorrow. I can't wait!

Debra,
I usually don't have any problem rooting things. Especially here in the summer, I've had some things root in a matter of days ! I usually just use straight vermiculite, set in a saucer and keep just a bit of water in it to make sure the vermiculite doesn't dry out. I'm probably going to just try to air layer the Red Jade Vine.....the way it's growing tho it wouldn't hurt to take a cutting and see, but I know Goth has done it and say's it can be very tricky. Hey - How did the Bow Tie do for you ?

Prita,
my brug's aren't blooming either...I've got three Milk and Honey and Equador Pink and a noid Peach. M & H is in a pot and the Eq. Pink in the Ground, and I had them right next to each other...."something" chewed the bajabber's out of the M & H leaves, and didn't touch the Eq. Pink. but none blooming...
If you found a RC at your nursery I'd paypal you money !!!!!!!.

I dug up two huge Confederate Rose's last year and tossed them cause of White Flies.......way too much work too keep them under control and they were a magnet for them. I've not really ever had a problem with Spider Mites, do get aphids on the milkweed once in a while , which seems like that's all they ever get on and I don't use chemicals cause of the Butterflies but at least those you can wash off with a hose and it keeps them at bay.

I found a nice size Hoya curtisii at Lowe's yesterday....for $4.00, had to take the saucer off the pot tho when I got home it was dripping wet.... .you can get some good deals if you check their sale rack but have to be prepared to help them along a bit.
Most of our Hoya's are still blooming.......

Rita, Thank you so much for thinking of me. That's beautiful and has made my day.

joeswife. A color-coordinated pollinator? WOW. Beautiful. Also, I will try my coleus method on the RC and see what happens.

Cass, I will look for seeds.

Texas, my sea hib. was blooming earlier, but not now. That kid is about 25' and usually blooms all the time..

Happy - do the Sea Hibiscus grow quickly ? I don't think it would be hardy here tho ......... They are very pretty.........

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Mine did pretty much. But it can grow here 12 months of the year.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

rita i had a few vandas under a mango tree that never flowered, until someone told me they need more sun and don't like to be in potting soil just attached to a hook. so as soon as i mooved them in by the pool they have been non stop flowering. this one just opened up this week. if you look to the top right you can see my little friend

Beautiful, Cass.

Looked for seed on the RC and found some. They are green. Should I wait till I find brown ones, or is this it?

mjsponies i took a cutting of a sea hibiscus from a neighbors tree and just stuck it in the ground. it grew but it was not varigated like theirs not sure why but it has been about 6 years and this is a MASSIVE tree already. it has gorgeous yellow hibiscus looking flowers. it reminds me of a ficus or banyan though i would keep it in a pot unless you want it to take over your yard. this picture is it hanging over my roof.

I have the variegated hisbicus purchased from a nursery near the Gulf. Last year I planted it in the ground and it got huge. I was afraid it would freeze so cut it back and potted it. Left it in the pot this summer and it is not growing so fast. I would really like it in the ground. Was told when I purchased it not to expect a bloom. hhhmmmmm

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

nancy i would wait till they turn brown and dry up.

Wow! those vandas are awsome. So they hang in air? nothing on the roots? I don't understand.
mjs, beautiful monach photo. sorry the pipe vine did n't make it, it just got fried even in the shade. no rain here for a month now. I shold have kept it inside. My bad. The passion vine is going crazy and it is still in its pot, sitting in another big tub, and climbing. the huge bud did not open yet. My hibiscus tree is loaded with blooms, ever since I changed the food I was giving them they have started blooming.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Cass,

There is one branch on my tree that is green. But then....as it grew, it turned the tricolor again. Go figure.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

joeswife only vandas (i think) since they are epiphytes like spanish moss they get enough from the rain and humidity i guess. i was told that the orchid baskets start to break down and decay which cause disease to the orchid. so i just clipped them to a hook with some butterfly clips. i do have a hand pump spray that i dilute a little fertilizer in and spray (whenever i remember). they are the most dependable orchids for me now. you can kind of see in this picture it just has a litlle plastic basket supporting it but no medium.

Debra,
You mean the Bow Tie Vine, ( haven't sent the Pipevine yet, not till you tell me too ! Remind me and I'll throw another Bow Tie in for you. It should have been ok...they do like alot of water when it's hot...I have several growing one gets 6-7 hours of our full sun, one in part shade and one in a hanging basket under the oaks. Get's dappled sun/shade. They all bloom, the one in the most sun not as much right now, but it's in the 80's OVERNIGHT ! here right now. So some things are just saying "nope" not gonna happen right now.

Candela, well I'm gonna move my Vanda....It's probably in too much shade way up under the Oaks....I can put it where it get's a bit more sun.
I'm just wondering if it would be too cold here for the Sea Hibiscus....

A noid orchid..............very bright !

YIKES!!
Where are my sunglasses????

What a beauty.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

That is gorgeous! Oh yes, MJ I meant the bow tie vine, sorry. It is/was in a basket in part sun part shade, it just failed, I do not know why, no big deal, "some will, some won't ,some do, some don't" is my motto. I am still waiting for blooms on the chalice vine and the other 7 passis out front, that are over the gutters and on to the roof now. I might have to get a tall ladder to see the blooms.
Rita I would love to try the black castor bean, save me a seed I will trade you the big green one, it has a name, not castor bean tho>
I wanted so bad to take home a nice tropical from lowes today, but DH was like.. "Are you crazy? " of course, I didn't wan't hime to know that I Am.
I just grabbed scotts black mulch ( not choclate) for a dollar a bag..

Your photo of the orchid from fairchild gardens show,
was it in the show or was it for sale ? Do you know
the family or genus its in? It looks like an alien from
far outer space! I wish i had better luck with orchids.

I have an Orchid similar to the candela showed above.
It's called a Lady Slipper Orchid don't know the particular cultivar.
I pick them up on Lowe's half price rack alot of times after they are done blooming so it's "Surprise Orchid"

Thumbnail by mjsponies

What a great find mjsponies at your Lowes store. I wish ours sold Laddy Slipper Orchids around here.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

I had to post a photo on the Orchid forum last year after it bloomed again to find out what it is. They seem to always have a few Orchids on their half price rack. I've got 14 Orchids now tho...so not getting anymore..........NOT that it's not tempting when ever I see them !

We use to find Lady Slipper Orchids growing here in the mountains when we were kids. I have not seen them in along time though but then again perhaps I am just not looking in the right places. Luckily the Orchid bug never bit me hard;-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I love those orchids. I too saw some at my lowes here, but I passed.. at 105 today and triple digits the rest of the new week, I just can't see me torturing anything else.

Dallas, TX

joeswife.
I know what you what you are talking about!!!!!!
Just came in from turning on water sprinkles.
Can only water in the shady parts of yard.
If the wind blows the water into the sunny parts
it will burn up the leaves. it' also 105 here.
Looks like a VERY LONG HOT and DRY
August!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But this is TEXAS!

Try to stay to stay COOL ( good luck with that )
I'am sitting in the ac and sweating!

Are the Lady Slipper Orchids hard to get them to bloom?
Any special requirements they need ?
Love orchids but do'nt know much about them.
Thanks. Jerry

Poor you Jerry, I feel your pain.. me too in the a/c but this lap top is on the desk looking out to the patio and yard, so I crack the blinds enuff to let me watch. I also have to be careful of watering when it is hot, I have scalded a few leaves all ready this year.

the naked ladies have been blooming for two weeks. they are a month early.

Jerry,
I don't do anything in Particular with them. They are in a mixture of Lava Rock and Charcoal. I alternate fertilizer's 1/2 strength depending on if they are blooming or after they are done. They either live outside under the oaks or on our screened porch.
I have one Catalaya tho I've never gotten to bloom, I'm been threatening lately with the 'back 40"....to totally ignore it...........that usually does the trick LOL

i'll say those naked ladies are early!

I wish i had at least some pictures of Rain to post!
Does any one have any to post??????????????
Jerry

Jerry, I could have supplied pictures of rain if you had asked yesterday. I collected several buckets full of rain water over the weekend. My area was just lucky enough.

Debra, this picture is for you and thanks. I did not have any Mirabilis plants but I do now.

Aww is that my double colour one? I tooks like it has a lighter center. I hope it smells good Rachel. It got up to 108 here today. All my EEs were laid over, even in the shade, and the brug blooms are now all toast, and they are in the shade too. I sprayed all my plants down to cool them off, they were hot to the touch. I can not remember the last time we had triple digits this time of year so many days in a row. I am sure I did not have plants I cared about back then as I do now.
Rachel, I will send you some yellow, white and my new coral two toned four o clocks. They have a sweet scent.
Yesterday I dug up the dark red philo from Rita, and re-potted it in a new pot with new soild and brought it inside next to Big Boy. I think I am going to bring in the other Philo ( split leaf) this weekend, if it doesn't burn in this heat. so far it is putting out lots of leaves. But it is in the ground.
Jerry, if u get a picture of Rain, let me gaze at it. snow would be good right now.

I thought I had wasted money on some of these zinnia seeds from summer hill, but I guess I am happy. They like the heat.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I lost the bud off my red passion vine, it looked like it just dropped the way a hibiscus does some times. It is too hot for pretty flowers , i think.
After cutting the tops off to get rid of the black triangle bug things, I finally have the blooms of Moon Raker Obedient plant. I gave away about 20 of these, it was not very obedient.

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I will be giving away about 20 more.. to who ever wants them. These are twice as tall as last years. I had forgotten I had them. I remember when Rita posted hers I wanted some.. LOL oh dear.
