Tropical Garden # 79

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

this is a plant I found recently. I'm always looking for butterfly plants and this one qualified. However, when looking at the PF I see that is hardy in z10 and 11, so I'll have to enjoy as an annual

Happy_1, It is good to see all that color in your yard! Along with the rangoon creeper and the potatoe bush, the yellow allamanda is outstanding.
I agree with the aroma of the RC, it is worth the effort of toting it in the greenhouse every winter.
My spelling and grammer is the worst, I went to English influenced schools in the Carribean. dh has to correct me all the time. Mostly, they make fun of me.

mjsponies, I have the double and the single RC, I did find the single to be more fragrant than the double which has a prettier display of flowers.
It must had been fun working on a sailboat, the best job that I ever had was working as a cook on a tanker running from Florida to the Caribbean.

Lou-C, If you ever want to try the Obedient plant again, just D-mail. Suprisingly, most of my lantanas and hardy bananas were killed by the cold.

Happy7, thanks, I love the Obedient plant, I would advise you to look it up in the plant files where it has 4 negative comments. I would be happy to send you a couple of plants if you decide to try it. Just d-mail your address.

Joeswife, thanks for my morning glory, I love the color! That is a castor bean plant in the background, they came up as volunteers after the last winter, which surprised me.
Today was my last chance for getting rain, it was so close we could smell it.

vossner, I am happy that you are getting lots of rain, can't wait to see how nice and big your plants have grown. I like your new plant, having never seen it before.

Thank you Debra for the lead on the Brugmansia and that was one cool picture of a storm cloud.

Rita, your black leaf Anthurium "Marie" is a new one to me and your Zingiber Collinsii "Silver Streaks" is stunning to view as well.

Datura.

Hap. that is one cool looking potatoe tree.

Dave, I love your photos, thank you, it feels like I am there and exploring when you post.
Rachel, I have a Hoya Like that someone sent me two years ago when I first came to DG , it was just a piece. Now it is vining. I look forward to seeing it bloom. It is on the front porch ledge, gets morning sun and afternoon shade.. Is that a good place for it?

Rita, Tropicman has alot of volunteers from caster beans too, I should have left the seed pods on eh? This is a member of the Castor bean plant family, but it is different and I can't remember its name, it wintered over in the basement last year and now we have seeds.
MJs, I have a varigated couple of plants that are tropicals, remind me when it is not oven like temperatures and I will send to you.

Are those the same type of Tree Fern's you can grow in a garden? I think it's RJ that has one, or had he may have lost it last winter. Debra, that would be great....I'll find something extra to send with your Pipevine...

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

rita, I have visited with you and you have absolutely NO English grammar problems. Your family (DH) has found something that upsets you and they are just teasing.

We still need to get together. Although I doubt I have anything you would want, I would be willing to try. I had some 15 bananas come up. They are now mostly over 6-7 feet. Still have several smaller ones that would be super easy to move. Yours for the asking.

Hey ! did you see me 'twittering" right thru your computer ! LOL,,,,,,,,actually there is some listed on ebay...12 " 1 year old plants for $9.99, $6.50 shipping seller has 100% positive feedback..........that seems like a reasonable price by what I've been able to find on line........
NOW, don't you guys all go buying them up !

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That's cheaper than I paid here!!

But let me know.

MJ, is deland FL a remote place? I'd think a good local nursery would have it. call around 1st

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Vos...... There aren't any decent nurseries around here w/o driving down to Orlando down " I-4 " ( this is a Hwy with signs that say " Please remove accident vehicles to the side of the road") ....and the gas I'd spend. NOW, if I could find a larger plant then I might consider it.
I will check tho, I'll need sedatives ................I drove almost down to Orlando International Airport to pick up my Red Jade Vine....too 4 1/2 hours then several beers to recuperate !

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

well, that's too far. I wouldn't drive that far, looks like mail order is well worth it. And as for beers, you can always drink a brewski celebrating that UPS man shows up w/ plant.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

nancy the rangoon creeper will give off seeds that look like an elongated anise seed. if you look on the ground you might have some sprouting up. there is a thread under vines and climbers about how to get the seeds

Hi Everyone!

vossner, I am still singing the no rain blues, I would trade my variegated plumeria for a good gully washer.

RachelLF, the anthurium is new plant for me as well. The foliage on your Hoya is very pretty. Most of the hoyas that I have, were bought because they had nice foliage. This one has never bloomed.

mjsponies, Rj is good at rooting plants. He has been missing for a while,
I hope that he is OK.
I found a few RC plants at my favorite nursery in Dallas $10 for a 4" pot. I will call to see if they got any more in. It would be nice to find one with a few blooms already, phughes had one for years that did not bloom for her.

Joeswife, do you have any of the black castor bean plants? They are much more colorful than the regular ones, their flower are a bright burgundy color.
Most of my Brugs are covered with spider mites. I miss having their blooms this summer. Do you think that if I stripped them of foliage, it would help, or kill them?

Thumbnail by prita

LouC, thanks, I will be over with my shovel as soon as it starts to rain again.

Metrosideros, That is very admirable of you to take those kids on a tour, I bet they will remember you for a long time.

candela, I can see from your orchid picture why I can not get mine to grow, I always pot them up in orchid mix, you have no soil in your pot.

Happy_1, flower for you!

you are welcome anytime, Rita.

Debra, I only have two Hoya plants and the "Royal Flush" is the only one that has given me a bloom thus far in which I have only owned since early Spring. The other Hoya has yet to give me a bloom and I have had it for well over a year. Both of mine were clearance rack specials at my local Lowes store. I paid a dollar or two for each of them and both are located in a high light situation in the house with a few direct sunlight hours via a window.

Rita, I know what it is like to have to battle spidermites! Goodness knows I have my battles with them often but have yet to find a total cure for getting rid of them forever. I honestly wonder if a person can without discarding the plant/plants infected one way or another. Spidermites have caused me many headaches and I must add my latest plant which came from a Floridian ebay seller was loaded with them. Wishing you all the best.
