Maybe I should ask here as to what this is. This is some kind of alocasia but how big do they get. This one is growing in black muck and my garden waste (used to be wetlands). The ground is 5 feet below my garage level so I guess it's still wetlands. In total shade they don't get this big but are still quite monsterous. The guy in the picture is 6 ft tall.

Tropical Garden # 79
Is Fred's plant Xanthosoma robustum!
Oh My Gosh!!!! I can not believe that monster plant ! LOL I gotta get me one!
Dave, wild orchids? I never heard of them, how wonderful! ( not mention beautiful)
Rita, my hibiscus branch is still hanging in there. prolly will take all winter to get to where it needs to get too. I love that Rubber Vine. Also, that datura is stramonium , Lilac De fleur, I have tons of seeds if you want some.
Rachel, won't get the Dragon Plant until this fall, it is too hot here rightnow to dig anything up, and my back won't let me bend down right now .. She has my name on it tho, she doesn't live far from me, and she wants my bamboo.
No blooms today from me that you and I havn't seen. Even my Roses are melting here..Well a few nice morning glorys, but then they will all be here all summer.
Wow, that monster plant is awesome!!!! I have to start collecting aroids...they're so interesting and diverse. Oh, and you know, a new plant collection is just what I need ;)
dave. beautiful orchids! They love growin on the trees don't they. I was in Vietnam a few years back and saw them growing grafted to trees everywhere. it is extremely humid there in South Vietnam. I showered 3 times a day and couldn't even cool off.
Fred, that is a crazy big plant, look like something from 'Jurassic Park'!
OMG Fred that is awesome. I hope my aloc. thai giant gets tha big. It's in the right place for that kind of show. It's not in muck but is is in shade and a direct hit from the sprinkler.
could yours be a Thai Giant
About Cyrtosperma johnstonii, it is a bog plant and needs to be kept very wet all the time. And being tropical they need to be kept warm all the time as well.
I have a friend who has dozens of them (plus other Cyrtosperma species). She keeps them in pots in a large trough filled with water. The water is between half and three quarters the way up the pot so the tops are out of water.
I've only the one, planted in a pot that's sitting in a container buried in the ground and getting the overflow from a fish pond. This is all outside but temperature isn't a problem here. July is our coldest month, but last nights minimum temperature was 24.7C (76.5F), todays maximum 35.2C (95.4F). I think cold water would make the tuber rot.
Thanks for adding Tropic.
The person I received my Cyrtosperma johnstonii from adds an aquarium heater during the Winter months. He grows them in a greenhouse in tubs and some in the same type of situation I have mine in as well.
Debra, nice Brug. and I hope your back is feeling better. Someone I know has been successfully growing this one in the ground for the past 4 years now here. Do you know which Brugmansia this one may be?
Hello Everyone!
Metrosideros, all your pictures are very appreciated!! I might even try to grow orchids again.
Fredrump, Glad to know that you got a proper Id for your monstrous xanthosoma. That is a gorgeous plant!
Joeswife,I love your night pictures! Do not be discouraged by the slow growth of your sea hibiscus, once it starts growing, I promise those variegated leaves will make you vey happy.
You mentioned a Dragon plant to Rachel. This is my first Dragon Fruit plant, do you have any tips on growing it? The fruit are suposed to be very good.
Not a good picture but it is the best one I got.
Rachel without a tag the brug peeps would say it is a pretty NOID. It does look like my Jean Pasko tho. It smells real good for me .
Prita, I do not have a dragon fruit plant, but a plant that grows wild here and looks troical and is called Dragon Plant, otherwise known as Sagittaria . I have a nice rangoon creeper that is climbing now on the south corner barrel. I love it.
My cestrums and jessimines are taking off and getting big. No blooms yet. Too hot, too dry and too windy to spend alot of time outside. It irritates me to hear thunder every nite and not feel any rain. I really like that Ixora, and am going to look it up.
My son came over today and dowloaded some pictures of his place. This is about 13 miles from me here. But, we didn't get the rain, as usual. DH says we enjoyed three very wet summers here, and now we are due for draught ..
well, no wonderful pics to post, but yes, it's be hot and DRY ! Some things in pots I've been having to water twice a day, once in the morning and again in the afternoon to hydrate the leave's. Trying to make sure not overwatering the roots is a PIA, as so many plants are wilted in the afternoon. At least those that are in the full sun, but if you try to plant them with afternoon shade, you get no blooms...and sometimes not even good growth ! arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............ can't win !
Rita...I see a Mikas there......I love that one.

Hibiscus Rum Runner haha " Rum Runner" was my favorite drink when I worked on the Sailboat down in the Key's............
I'm thinking I'm going to have to get a Ragoon Creeper..........just don't know where I'm going to put it............running out of room............Oh dear !
I'm not big on vines but I do have a place where I could put a rangoon creeper, maybe. does it attach itself to bricks or do you have to tie it? evergreen or decidous?
They're saying this is the 4th wettest july in our area in recorded history. I should have some good pics in a couple of weeks when my tropicals respond to all this moisture.
great pics, I've never seen a potato tree.
is it time for a new thread?
My obedient plant apparently was taken out by the snow and extreme cold. Didn't come back.
also the potato air plants.
Hi Prita!
I love your beautiful plant! Is it's name really "obedient plant"? Please would you tell me more about it, also do you think it would grow in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. zone 10? We have heavy summer rains and lots of humidity. Do you ever part with cuttings or perhaps do a swap of cuttings? I have quite a few loely, unusual fowering plants. Please let me know....
quote="prita"]mjsponies, I feel your pain with the watering!! Sometimes, I wish that I had a yard crew and a sprinkler system, but then, each plant would not get my tlc.
I usually will keep my more desirable plants in pots and move them around until I find the perfect spot to plant them.
Obedient plant[/quote]
Oh Happ, I love your Rangoon creeper. Mine is just a baby, and I will have to bring it in. Yours is awsome. Also, love that potatoe tree and yes, that is how I learned to spell it too. What are those yellow flowers vining there ? OMgosh you make me Green with envy. LOL
MJ's, I can't wait to see my water bill. I water for lmost two hours every night. If I have time in the am before work then it is at 6 am. ugh. dryest summer in three years. Margaurite should reward me with a bloom soon, she has a bud. Thanks!
Rita, I see a big leafed plant in the back ground kinda looks like a castor bean. Is it?
My obdient plants are everywhere, I had to dig some up and move them to other yards. I still have tons of them.
This morning glory is for you, Rita..
Hi vossner,
No, it does not self stick. I had to wind it around the trellis as it was growing. As far as losing it's leaves??? Well this winter was a real killer for everything and I lost a lot. This was stick this spring, but showed a little green. Now given a normal winter, I see if it will keep the leaves and flowers. Hope so.
The Potatoe tree lost a few leaves during our WINTER, but it never stopped flowering. It was my star!!
Hap
