Now THAT's what I like to see - I missed out on one of those famous "Jaye hugs"!!

How everyone's all right tonight and ready for tomorrow. Randall's birthday was Friday. we celebrated in one of his favorite ways, went to a movie, a "blow'm up," of course. Saw Knight and Day. LOL it was GREAT.

Spent today creating a new hosta bed under the oaks. I thought I had enough cardboard and paper. But, no, it only covered 40% of the area! Ouch. But we got down over 75% of the compost load out of the pickup, so we're happy. We have a bit more paper. When we went to the Kroger for my prescription refill, we snooped around back and raided the cardboard only dumpster out back of the CiCi's restaurant. Just hope that the fact that my new cardboard smells delightfully like Italian food doesn't attract critters - it's clean cardboard, just the heavy cardboard cases from their ingredient supplies. We'll do the rest tomorrow. Then we go out to Texas Roadhouse for to celebrate Randall's birthday with family.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Early morning here, yesterday my brother was over and we worked on a step down to a lower deck from back bedroom..ooops had to tell me once or twice, 'who is the helper in this project?' ok, best I keep quiet..but I know in a few weeks I'll change what I wanted changed...he'll be back..lol

Then in a magazine saw a condo type design of 5 birdhouses to I'm up to #4 this morning...having my coffee and going to look for containers to try hypertufa before the day gets too hot..drats, could stay out longer if it wasn't for the giant size skitters...

On the news Friday they said Ontario alone created over 485,000 jobs, not all full time but still they are jobs...as for the insurance, my heart goes out to you all.... if I were to need a heart transplant here it would be simply find a donar and not have to worry about payment..that's the one think I'm so grateful for in this country I call home...

Hope you all enjoy your day...

I saw the craziest thing on CNN or one of those news only channels last night. A man and 2 women were trying to sell a 9mos. old little girl at a Walmart in Salinas, CA for $25 yesterday. It was the baby of the man and one of the women. of course they were arrested, but isn't that super crazy!!

Bon-Tell Randell we all said HAPPY LATE BDAY!!!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Happy Birthday, Randall!

Yes, that is crazy, Tink....!

Bonita, Giant armwraps are a specialty of Judy, too. So those were priceless from the two of them.

Betty, I sure wish I had your getupandgo! Is that a bowling ball in your picture? If so, did you do the decorating? Love it!

Well, Bertie and I are off to a pond tour today. We go to a pond tour every year in Cincy, but it's the same ponds over and over. This is the Miami Valley Water Garden Society. We used to go to their tours and then they stopped having public ones and just did member only ones... :o( so this year it's open to the public again and we're excited! We're also thinking about joing the MVWGS. We think maybe our ponds will be good enough now.

We got a little rain the other night, but not enough. I'll have to water today. My poor little impatiens by the fence look dreadful!

Okay, need to hop in the shower...hope you all have a wonderful day!

Still recouping from yesterday with Cookie.
we had an excellent time !
great info
got free plants
free food
great BBQ when we drove home
i m pooped

Joyce, not a bowling ball, bought several light glass fixtures and did them with glass globs and grouted..work fine..this one has been in the garden for several years...

Yes, I've been busy..projects galore, not sure I'm making headway but am trying...brother Bernie came this morning, finished the stairs/decking from back spare bedroom..so now I look and need to do a garden on the side and in front of this area..project #1, then I've got 2 more birdhouses to do the condo that I'm making, still need to be painted white - project #2, then I've all the fixings to try a few hypertufa containers, got sidetracked all weekend - project #3, then seeing as I had made sides/back/front of the flower shed I wanted for back in the bush but didn't have the strength to attach them together, brother felt sorry..was just going to show me, had some well put together questions pertaining to putting the rest together, ahhh wouldn't you know, it was easier for him to show and tell me why things had to be done the way they were to do it right along with me..oh happy days..all that remains is the inside flooring, shelves and seat..tomorrow morning I'll call TimBrr Mart and have them deliver what I need, including a grinding tool that I MUST have; the tin for the roof is laying on the ground, needs to be cut and attached to the roof, going to call my son Greg tonight and have him do it, then project done..hardest part is where oh where to I put it..lol..once decorated it will be another 'garden treasure' I'm sure...project #4...so as you can see, each project that I've undertaken has led to more unfinished projects...

Must call DIL, have a corner plant unit near the back deck, I've plans for that area so she said a few weeks ago she'd like it, if she doesn't know a neighbor that would...

Back to work

Betty - just reading your posts can make me tired! LOL!

Yah, I kinda guessed that about Jaye, that her hugs would be special - who was getting hugged back in that first photo?

We got the remaining newpaper and the Cici's cardboard laid down. (the Italian smell was gone this morning.) About 65% of the bed got covered, 75% actually -have to leave room for a garden bench, too. Randall and Ruth put the remaining compost over top thinly, to hold the papers down until I can get more compost. Then a thin layer of topsoil atop it all. Saw this morning that the oak's branches need to be trimmed up, too. But there's time - BIL says not to plant or play with the hostas until mid August - it's too blamed hot. Cookie - the heurcheras go to the front of this bed where they'll get a bit more sun.

We haven't had but one day in 30 under 97 degrees. We only work out in the heat for an hour or two in the mornings. We just had the coldest winter on record. Now we're having the hottest May, June and now July on record. But...I start iris dig tomorrow. Won't be done for five weeks.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I have a bearded iris blooming! Do different bearded iris bloom at different times of the year?

I know the feeling Bon, this heat sucks, and we need rain here so bad and the storms are going north and south of us. Normally I'd be ok with this, but not when the grass is dying!

I've taken pictures the past few days and I'm trying to upload them and my Satellite Internet keeps freezing up!

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY RANDALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hiya Tubby! Tell Shirley we all say HI!

That's seriously bad about the job and all, and insurance is always an issue here for some reason. I just hope that the cost of insurance doesn't skyrocket even more than it already is.

LOL Sue, I bet you are pooped!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Yes, an amazing day with Sue, yesterday and a truly fun one today with Bertie. Saw a couple really awesome ponds. I took photos, so hope they came out. It was pretty sunny for some of them.

Side note....Sue....Wot-A-Dog was open today....maybe they're just open on the weekends! Anyway, Tim can be happy again.

Bon, that is Judy (Seedtosser) who is hugging Jaye...like I said, she's famous for her "armwraps" as well!

Betty....whew....have to go lay down now...you make me so tired.....
awesome garden shed....hope no one mistakes it for an outhouse!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Hello - just got back from church's Stampede Bar-B-Que lunch - wow there were a lot of people from the community who attended!

LK - will go to the Dr tomorrow for meds. I'm so tired from coughing.

No one came to the Open House yesterday. This makes 2 Open Houses we've had, and no one came to 1st one, either.
The sales man still says should sell in 30 to 40 days. We shall see.

Going to go lay down for a nap now.

Susan

Victoria Harbour, ON

Susan, you must be so disappointed...sorry you still aren't well, stronger meds are probably needed to get you back on your feet..

Joyce, nice getting back into work weekends and sit and play at the office routine..

Must ask you Joyce, seing as you just made a hypertufa pot, rain stopped so decided I'd find one more bit on energy..mixed a batch - 1 part peat moss/2 parts ?mind just went blank, the white popcorn type substance..lol and 1 part portland cement..did the inside of a basket to try it, seemed rather dry in comparison to how I make stepping stones, so decided to leave it and see what happens...the 2nd container I put upside down and put a bit more water..oh/oh as I patted the mixture onto my mold it kept falling and making the project quite a bit bigger, that would be fine except I put my finger in the top to check it out and most likely there was only about 3/4 to 1" thickness, so that ended that project, next time will do something different, took all the guck and put some in the bottom of a flower pot, inserted a container and filled between..you sure won't get many projects done with 1 batch will you?

Started to sprinkle again so put what peatmoss and portland cement I had under cover....used an entire bag of the popcorn though..too lazy to walk to the back porch to see what it's called..know the minute I press send it will come to me.. any help greatly appreciated..

I'm still hopeful Sue, still used the mixture just didn't get as elaborate on my first try as I would have wished...now to leave it for 4 or 5 days before taking it out of it's form will be the hard part..lol

That's a cool vignette, Betty. The same thing happened to me on my first try with doing the outside of a bowl. Live and learn. They told us to get the consistency of brownie mix for the hypertufa slurry. Don't know if that's what you had or not. I wish I could remember what my recipe was...know it was peat, portland cement and "perlite" (there ya go, Betty!) Just not sure what the ratio was. Seems like it was equal parts of peat and perlite and half again as much pc.

Don't tell the people on ORVG you love him....cause they DON'T!!

ROTFLMAO - Poor Bevin! at dinner at Texas Roadhouse, first she got a long hair fried INTO the onion blossom on her plate. THEN she got a dead fly in her Caesar salad. They didn't charge for the blossom, but they couldn't bring her another salad - she couldn't eat one she was so grossed out! Later the manager came over, said they were picking up the tab for her meal, and gave her a $30 gift card for the next time she came in. (She gave it to Randall, said, "Happy Birthday, Pop! I can't come back EVER." After the hair, she bought a beer to drink, just so the alcohol could kill germs. After the fly, she did request a handful of wipes, which they quickly provided, and she still didn't feel clean, so she ordered another beer. Wasn't sure if it was to clean her mouth after the salad, or just so she would stop caring.

Later, they came over and told Randall he'd be getting two desserts free for his birthday, what would we like? Cheesecake of course! And several very pretty girls came and cheered his birthday. Five minutes later they started their line dancing, and suddenly, instead of the dreamy cute guy that was our waiter dancing nearby, there were two cute girls in daisy duke shorts! Randall was crowing," it's my birthday, it's my birthday, or WHAT!!! this is GREAT!" Ah, me....men! so easy to please.....

All of us richly enjoyed our meals, well, except Bevin, that is....Mom and Dad came, their first time there, and they loved it even though it was a bit too late for them to be eating. Dad was feeling the onion on the way back to their apartment (I drove them). But as he passed out the doorway, he looked up and said, "well, they've got a high A health grade!"

Decided not to wait - I dug some irises along the front walk this afternoon. Between more hot work and lots of food, I'll say goodnight now. Nighty night all!

Raleigh, NC

forgot to say, Crissy, some irises have a remondant gene. They can bloom again without a period of cold weather. They are known as "rebloomers". most rebloomers rebloom in the fall. But some bloom in summer.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

A birthday Randall won't forget for sure! Neither will Bevin!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - yes, I'm disappointed, but what will be, will be.
It will come about, I'm sure. What is frustrating though, is that people judge the inside by the older looking outside (it is a 1974 mobile), and I can't paint or change the outside. I wish I could...... but the flower gardens are very pretty. The Waterton Mock Orange trees are in Full Bloom and smell like orange blossoms - mmmmmm.

I went in the hot tub this afternoon, for about 1/2 hour and got soooo relaxed. Felt good.
Tomorrow starts my 2-week vacation and I intend to go to a Stampede breakfast my DH is taking me to. A company across the street has invited all the people where my DH works and he's asked me to join him (8am! yikes - guess I'd better get some sleep tonight so I'm rested).
Next week I'll relax and get some sewing done, There's a Stampede Lunch at work in my Division, so I may drop in for that, too.
Oh, btw - it's Stampede time in Calgary, in case you hadn't guessed LOL ^_^

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Could you explain "Stampede" to us, Susan? I'm not familiar with it.

Poor Bevin. Yes i would drink a shot of whiskey after that . Good thing the restaurant did a great job of taking care of you. I have been in some places and get nothing ! when food is awful. Kinda like coffee places that serve coffee that taste like hot water LOLLLL

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL! Well, I'm glad I talked you in to returning that "hot water". At that price, geez....it should at least taste something like JAVA!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Sue-I love Cesar too-Joyce why do they not like him??

Bonnie-sounds like you all except Bevin had a good time. If I have something bad like that happen at a restaurant and nothing is done, then I ask to speak to a mgr and get VERY loud with my complaint if I am not taken care of. Did you know that bugs in the salad are the most frequent thing to happen in restaurants like that? When they cut and wash the lettuce, if they don't pay attention, one can make it into the mix. It usually isn't as big as Bevin's sounds though.

Joyce-I thought it was super crazy-the whole selling the baby, but also for only $25?? WHOA!! Sounds like you had a terrific weekend!!

Betty-what a great brother you have!!

I may be a dummy-but what is so great about hypertufa??

Crissy-aren't those little garden surprises like reblooming iris great!!

Susan-glad you get some relaxing time and time to get better. Don't fret so much about the open house-contrary to what they show on the home shows on TV, most people don't go to open houses. They prefer to schedule times that are convenient for them to go and tour alone and unimpeded.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Joyce, stampede I THINK is another word for rodeo..it's the largest in Canada and held at same time of year...slatting it on my calendar for next year..always say I want to go but never go..maybe I could find me an ole cowpoke? do you think?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Think the worlds biggest RODEO, State Fair and Carnival all in one.
We went to the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede in Cody, WY.
The biggest USA event I think.
All the riders were chomping at the bit for Calgary to start.

Unfortunately there was a serious incident last night at Calgary.
A horse had a fatal heart attack and fell on the rider.
She's going to be OK it appears.

Ric

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

I received a lovely Thank You card from Fairy1004 this morning along with the most adorable fabric to use in a diaper bag for her. Stacey I need to go find a special pattern for fabric that cute!!!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

"She" being the rider.......

Yes, Stampede 2-weeks is bigger than Christmas and Thanksgiving here...... (I still like Christmas best, being from the Christmas Capital of Canada - Winnipeg), but Stampede means there are free "cow-poke" type of breakfasts and lunches (Pancakes, bacon & eggs, sausage, etc, etc) all over the city as each business throws one for their staff, co-companies, etc, as well as Community Centers and churches having their version of them. You can have breakfast, lunch and supper for free for 2 weeks if you plan it right LOL
Our Church had 5x as many people as we usually do, this year. People come from all over the world for Stampede. There are world competitions for Fireworks, too. I think last year that China won.

Betty - come here for Stampede next year and stay with us!! It's Crazy-Busy here at the hotels, and really hard to find anywhere to stay - and Very Expensive anyway!!! We'd find you a western hat & boots, too! ^_^
I'd be sure to take that week off! Heck - companies give everyone 1/2 day off too - some for Parade Day, and some for any day that they want ^_^

Carol also put the offer out..would surely visit with the 2 of you...lordy after teaching line dancing for 6 years I've an abundance of country/western gear and boots I had made for myself while in Texas about 20 years ago..hardly worn...with no effort I could look like a down home country gal!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Barb-so glad you got it-boy was that quick!! Can you take a pic so the ladies can see?? I forgot to take one B4 I sent it. I can't wait to see what it looks like. I know it isn't enough to make the whole bag, but thought it would be easy to incorporate:)

Free bacon !!! and americans have not discovered this type of holiday yet ???
what is wrong here with this picture ?? !!
i will do anything for bacon ....... legal stuff..... :)

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh! Thanks for the heads up on rodeo...I mean stampede. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Hypertufa is just fun to make and fun to plant. You get to use little things. ^_^

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL! Only you Sue, only you....

Stacey...some of the dog trainers on ORVG think that Cesar is cruel in his training practices. So our members have agreed to disagree and move on...

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Hi everyone, busy at work today.

Stacey what's weird is they didn't bloom with the other iris this spring, this is their first bloom. I knew I planted white ones last fall but thought since they didn't bloom they had died, apparently not! LOL

Raleigh, NC

hmmm... well, some irises just need to get acclimated. Bearded irises blooming now would be rebloomers. They will bloom when they get strong enough to bloom, either in spring for those without remondant gene (need cold before blooming) or during their "reblooming cycle" for those with a remondant gene. Remember, they use up a huge amount of their strength blooming, because they never do again. After blooming once, their only function is to makes new clones to bloom next time.

anyone that hasn't done it yet - go cut the bloomstalks off your irises! decaying bloomstalks can cause a tender iris to rot!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I read online that's how the iris get their food, by the old bloom stalks. Actually no, that was at a gardening meet of some sort.
