Today's Weather in Your Garden - 73

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

High so far here is 99.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

It's terrible, even established maples around here are turning yellow, their leaves wilted...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - shaping up to be a real costly summer.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

We are watering like MAD! so far, the plants have fared okay . . . . I gather we will have 90+ degree temperatures next week as well . . . Currently temperature 100 degrees.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hmmmm, now what were we saying about not wanting to be living in Florida in the summer? Let's see, it was 75 and raining at our house in Fla. yesterday and it was 107 on my car thermometer when I picked up my son at the airport at Bradley yesterday afternoon. It is almost 7:00 here tonight and it is showing 93 in the shade. I'm to blame here for speaking harshly about Florida weather in the summer. Sorry y'all!

Thomaston, CT

I'm in the same boat, Louise! Hopefully we'll get back to normal soon.....sea breeze kicking in here & lowering temps to 80's.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, please, Marilyn....join me in some rain and cool dancing!!! Gotta have it!! LOL

Thomaston, CT

I've prayed all day...the only shower in CT was in New London!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

It's been more than 2 weeks here....Things are having trouble hanging on, and I'm afraid to turn on the garden sprinklers. The water can method got a bit tiring today in that heat.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Why afraid of the sprinklers?

South Hamilton, MA

Sprinklers are not too efficient--that's why we have the drip hoses. If people just have a hose, they should water at the roots & not during the day.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I know they're not as efficient as drips, but they do cover a much bigger area. I really like the Rain Tower I have since it shoots above all my shrubs. I have drips too, but with beds the size of mine, I would really need many to cover all the plants and you still have to lug the hose out to connect to them. You cannot connect more than a few in series or you lose pressure.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

When the water table drops so much, we have to be careful about using the amount of water that the sprinklers use up in order to get the water deep enough to do any good. We've had our water get cloudy when I do too much watering during a drought. The down side of having so many gardens here on top of a hill.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ok Louise so I am blaming you for this heat....

Hubby has been working crazy hours...just walked in the door.

One of these days he'll fix the hose connection in the back...I am still trekking all the way to the garden back there carrying a bucket and watering can...crazy.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I use sprinklers on my side and front gardens but turn it real low so it's basically like a soaker just going on the roots...have to move it about a thousand times all day

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

oooh, that's tough in this heat, Jen!

Lucy - thanks for the reminder....I just found my stash of soaker hoses in the shed part of Cuppatea. I looked everywhere for them the last time we had this kind of drought here. I'm hoping tomorrow will be cooler so I can swap out the sprinkler hoses for the soakers. The only problem is that my garden is now so long. I may run out of hoses, but the tomatoes and peppers and sunflowers up at the top don't need quite as much water as the beans, broccoli and cukes and snow peas.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Temp down to 80 degrees. Spent an hour and a half watering back and side garden beds this evening with the hose and watering can. So crispy on the lawn, or what is left of it. Lots of yellow leaves on lots of trees and plants. Shrubs and plants are wilting and trying to conserve moisture. Saw that little rain shower down there in Conn. A couple of them popped up here and there on the radar but all were west of my location. Supposed to be a tad cooler the next couple of days, only in the 80s but like everyone else what we really need is some rain.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

"Deep enough to do any good" is key. Last friday I spent 3 hours doing target watering. Much to my amazement, when I raked under a rose bush, there was no damp earth under the mulch. I am now resigned to survival of the fittest. But even that brought a severe blow today. My Blue Jays that took up residence under my deck umbrella hatched their chicks. Monday there were two. Tuesday there were three. Today there was one. But he was quite cold. I watched Mama try to rouse her last baby for almost a half hour. I was filled with grief. Krapola, I'm being too morbid.

I'm taking Jack to some caverns in PA on Friday. He's never been spelunking!! I'll let you now how the weather is down there ;)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Sorry, Weeze! I think we all feel that way.....at least I know it goes with the name!
the other Weeze

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It will be cooler! I like caves.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

91*F @ 9pm, the air is so heavy it feels like we may get a boomer, a 5 min. downpour would be welcome at this point. 30k without power in York County and Met Ed says they don't have a clue. They are asking that everyone on public water to shut off their sprinklers for 48 hours due to low pressure. Ric

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hey Louise...You will appreciate this for the originality alone. I knew a guy that would invert names. He called me Hi tense as it was the opposite of Lo ease ;) Little did he know that in 2010 I would be HI HI HI tense....let it rain! Who did the the Rain on Me song? Was it The Who?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Rain on Me (Corey Hart), Rain on Me (Tamia) Ric

The Who did Love, Rain O'er Me.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

That's the one I was thinking of! My vocal chords hurt just thinking of that song. And of course, I got the words a bit wrong.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I belted it out as I posted it!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

...and may have hurt something...

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

^_^ good thing you're already married, I'd have to marry you for hurting yourself whilst belting out a Who song

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Elvis did "Kentucky Rain"...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I'm hoping their wish comes true soon, and in my opinion this is still the best rendition of this tune. Ric
