Yes I am still growing seeds in the heat. I guess I am a glutton for punishment. I am also doing cuttings well the green house is almost full so I need to do a rearrange and get more room as I have to trim my gold mound spirea and you know how I hate to waste a cutting. I will post a pic tomorrow of the GH and all the itty bitty seedlings. I am trying to get 3 rotations out of the space in a year. time will tell if it works.
I am planning to do a lot of hard wood cuttings in september/october to sit all winter and root. I still have a ton of seeds to get going but its all full at the inn so they will have to take a number and get in line.
I am off till the am
have a great evening everyone
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Dave, I have been talking to some of the people on one of the other threads about cloning and they are actually just using bubblers only instead of having the deep ones, they are using what looks like maybe 6 inches deep and any size surface wise. Just cutting the hole and using a sponge to hold the cuttings in place and airstones. It sounds like they are having pretty much 100% rootings and not taking long either.

You might think of something like that if you want a lot of plants. But, you might get more than you are wanting.

You probably have a small aquarium pump and airstones. Why don't you just try one. Without getting too elaborate.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

sounds like a plan...now just to find a spare moment. I think I can wrangle all the stuff up here at the house. just have to find it...now which stack was that in???lol
hmmm how do you get the roots out of the sponge? or is it rooting below the spounge?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I'll get a list together tomorrow. I hope. It looks like a busy day so far. Will let you know.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well, the pots are done but did not make it into the courtyard garden. 106 today and after lunch with landscape company, it was just to hot so I did the laundry. I will do the courtyard tomorrow. There is nothing on my schedule to make me leave my neighborhood for the next 4 days. This is a photo of my completed pots.

This the unknown purple plant. It spreads but easily controlled. It blooms, when done you cut it back and it grows and blooms again. Flower first.

The next photo is a small bulb that also thinks it is a rabbit but it is actually "Super Rabbit". I do not know what it is or where I got it but when it starts blooming and this is the first bloom this year. It blooms all summer. Just a darling bulb for in front of the garden.

This a photo of a bellflower. Looks like a small amaryllis. Another rabbit. I purchased 3 bulbs 20 years ago for $5 to $7 a bulb. The reason they were so expensive is you will never need to buy another one. I have my mother bulbs children growing in New Jersey, North Carolina, Texas, Arizona and California not even counting all over Las Vegas. They are like a day lily. Bloom is only for one day but blooms its heart out all summer.

All very nice Sharon. Lots of work but very much appreciated I am sure.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

If anyone want any of the bulbs, just let me know. If anyone know the name of the purple flower, I would appreciate and I will send those plants also.

The cannas are about two years away from gifting except the Tropicana's. I have a few hundred of them. I was amazed, this last week I was at a nursery and they were charging $30 for three stalks of the Tropicana in a gallon pot and they were weak plants.

When I cut them back, just let me know. But these are big plants, even minus the leaves and dirt they will have weight. Or maybe you could all come to Vegas on a Junket and take back your plants. I bet there is a trucking company that delivers cheaply because during the early winter, no problem coming from Nevada. POhoto is Tropicana Canna.

Jnette I still have my sweet woodruff, may be wrong name, invasive plant in the front landscape looking at me every morning wanting to know why he was sent to hell. Have a great day tomorrow.

Hopefully I will be able to complete the courtyard in the 104 heat. DH hospital stay got me behind "But I will survive". And so will my garden., Now eating basil and tomatoes from the garden.

Life is good. Missing Luke but they will be here on the 15th for two weeks so I will survive. And my son is so happy his family is there in Washington.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, I would love to have a little piece of the canna. I have to plant them in pots because I can't dig them and they have to come in up here.

Give the Sweet Woodruff a couple of years. Remember the 3rd year and leaping? I liked it the first year, wondered if it would ever be a good ground cover. The second year I started frowning. By the end of the 2nd year I got out the Roundup. The 3rd year I attacked it full bore with Roundup. I am still pulling it out of my roses and that is after covering it with newspaper and mulch.

However, what is a good plant is invasive in other parts of the country. I know that. There may be just some things that control it naturally.

It sounds like your son and family like Washington state? That is good. Sounds like a good move for them. And you are really quite lucky Sharon. You are not that far away. Most moves are a lot more distant than that.

Well, Sharon, what happens in our long, hot summers? Does my blood thin out for the summer? And what about the winter fat that I accumulated during the long winter-spring...? Will it be easy to lose...can I lose my appetite accordingly...LOL? (I wish!) 15 pounds!

Look what I found in my driveway today...he was camera shy, as when I got the camera, then he went into the rosemary bush...

Yuck it is about the size of the one in our car port a couple of weeks ago. No Bueno.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Jeanette ~ Do you have any more sweet woodruff? Maybe in the fall?? What would you like?

It was only 90° today, as yesterday it was 95° and the low last night was 65°. So I would say that summertime is here to stay....I could not believe I thought that 90° was cool tho'! LOL! There was a nice breeze as well...

Here is a close up...does anyone know what kind of snake this is?

Thumbnail by evelyn_inthegarden

evelyn, are you saying you want some SW?? If so, I will try to pull some out of the rose bushes. I really love the smell of it. If it isn't invasive it would be nice. Let me know. Maybe I can talk Bob into getting you some.

Sharon, The purple flower looks like tradescantia to me.... What do you think?

Pawleys Island, SC

Hi Everyone,
That snake could cause a fear of leaving my house!. Ever since my Son's pet snake ( if you can call a snake a pet) disappeared last year, I am leary of anything that moves.

Sharon, Jill is right, That is tradescantia. Here we call if spiderwort. It is a native wildflower and it does bloom all summer and spreads a lot.
Here it even grows right up to the salt marsh. i have a lot of it and it has spread quite a lot. I am thinking about planting it next to my house in the back yard and see if it survives where everything else seems to want to die.

We started the re-design yesterday. I was really worried about moving everything then because some of my daylilies still had buds and all of my hardy hibiscus had buds, but after we let the sprinkler run on them for a couple of hours, they look great. I got up this morning and there are 3 dinnerplate size southern belles strutting their stuff.
Hubby is out working now, but I am not going out until later this afternoon. I have some packaging to do and some paperwork. ( when it is this hot, I can find all kinds of things to keep me indoors. LOL)
I do need to get out and collect some seeds. But that will happen this afternoon.
I may keep the rest of my daylily seedlings to fill in a couple more spots that we have made up. I want to see them bloom anyway, hubby says that is just an excuse, but I think it is valid.
Here is a picture of some stella de oro daylilies in the midst of a big pile of spiderwort, let me know if it is the same plant.

In the meantime, I hope everyone else has a wonderful day. I will check in on you later.

That is exactly it. Mine is dark purple. Is yours actually that blue. I dig mine up every late summer and split and give away to control it in the bed with the Day Lilies, Irises and Hardy hibiscus. I have one very hot spot next to the house by the pool that I cannot get much to grow. I think I will try some there. Mine is on its second bloom and looking a little haggard because of the 106 heat. My Sumac is dropping leaves so fast, it looks like it is snowing leaves. I have two very large Sumac's that shade the majority of the back house and are probably 40 feet tall but when they dump their leaves this time of year my patio is a disaster. It used to drive me crazy but now I just go with the flow. Must be something about not fighting Mother Nature.

If that plant is really that Blue, I would love a few starts. I could send you some Australian Violas. Photo attached.

The snakes pattern reminds me of a wester diamond back rattle snake.
I agree with the consensi on the spiderwort. that came to mind on the 1st pic. I have one in a gallon that I am waiting to plant. just have yet to get a spot for it.
ok the other little lily flowers are rain lilies. I have them in pink they are a wonderful addition to any bed as the grass like foliage just looks likea border but then comes the flowers.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/399/

I collect seeds from mine as they produce a mega ton of seeds in cute pods. the leaves are not as big as in the pic. mine are like a fine liriope leaf real thin and just blends.
well it looks like we are getting the hurricane on the 3rd/4th. today it is 89 degrees and a welcome change except for the low pressure that I truely dispise.
stay cool

My lily only has one bloom per stalk and the leaf is different. I will take a better photo. I would love a start of your pink. I could send you something. I have a little of everything I think.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Most of the rain lilies have just 1 flower per stalk at least thats what I remember from seeing them in south florida where they are native.
I am going to be revamping that bed soon. i will post on here as to what I have to share. My 1st pod cracked open a few days ago. I have to get 2 more off the plants outside.the seeds are like a black tissue paper.

I should go take some pictures of some cool unidentified wild flowers, since they came in a mix that I don't have the package for anymore. I love these things whatever they are. There are a couple but one plant is so nice and comes in many colors.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Dave ~ I asked my husband if it was a rattler, and he said no. (He kills them all right away...) This one did not coil, I did not see any rattle, so I just don't know, but I thought with that pattern that it might be a rattlesnake as well. I don't know much about them. Still it was quite docile and shy, so that part is fine with me.

Linda ~ Any oil on your shore yet? I cannot imagine anything quite as big as this has been, and still going...

Jeanette ~ Sweet Woodruff is definitely not invasive here...I gave away so much in trades that I only have a very small patch left, that I grow under the pine tree where the the white flower border is. I am in no hurry for it, however as I need to plant all that I have started as well as the ones ordered in. Then I will get going again on seed-starting. The cottage garden is almost finished, but it looks so sparse...I tend to plant to many things too closely, and this time I have spaced them out properly, I hope. It will take a while for them all to get up to size. Actually, any garden of mine is never finished, as I will always want to add more to it or change things around, if they don't look quite right.

Sharon ~ 106° again? Wow! (WHEW!) No thanks! I would not be growing anything in that weather for sure. I had better and hurry to plant everything I have started as I do not like to plant in the heat. It was cooler today, but I had to go to town, so not much work in the garden today. Yesterday I worked too hard since for the last few days I was under the weather. Then last night I used the salad spinner and pulled a muscle(s). So much for trying to make up for lost time. Hopefully I will be better tomorrow. Otherwise I may have to see the chiro on Friday.

Well, hot bath and heat pack for me tonight. I hope everyone is well. Have a nice evening.

I was raised around rattle snakes and that sure does look like one.

I have seed pods on my Cleopatra Canna. Have never had seed pods on a Canna before. Now I have to study about Canna seeds. I am having so much fun.

Jnette, I will dig up a couple baby Tropicana and get them off to you. D-mail me your address. When they get to you they will think they are in springtime again. I have some in pots because then I can place them behind something, like the Koi Pond.

I got the majority of the courtyard completed after 5pm when it was in total shade. But I did leave two 6 packs of bronze leaved, orange flowered begonia that are now fried. My landscape friend is bringing me by a flat of Australian Violets that he special ordered and got to much. It just makes it easier for me because now I do not need to transplant. I transplanted Silver Dichondra, Jacobs Ladder and Baby Tears.

I actually discovered a new viola in my back landscape by the Koi pond that has bronze leaves. I have no idea where it came from but I am going to transplant one, there is 3, in to my holding garden and see if I can get it live and spread. It is growing under the Mesquite Tree in crushed granite, also know as DG. Probably will die when I move it to soil and regular water.

I feed the birds. I have two different feeders. One on the far side of the Koi Pond and the other hanging in the Sumac Tree across the clover and dichondra. So every morning, when i feel the feeders, and i do not fill them every day, it is like watching a major airport landing field. I have the socks for the tiny birds, and then the doves and quail sit below to pick up the fallen goodies. I also throw a few cups of the bird food in that area for the larger birds. I also throw out fruit, lettuce or whatever is not just up o par and the Quail love it. With the Koi Pond, the feeders, and the totally shaded area by the Koi Pond we are invaded every morning with birds, dragonflies, hummers and of course gnat flies which the dragon flies and hummers love. I get the gnat flies because I place a couple of spoiled bananas behind the Koi Pond. They do not leave the bananas so so far so good.

That is why I am so late getting to the gardening in the morning because the show I get you do not have enough money to pay for.

This morning, a very large Robin took a bath, walked up to the top of the water fall, rested about 1 minute and then took another bath. Later today I watched a mother hummer trying to encourage her newly flying baby. I kept hearing this strange weak beep when I was working in the courtyard so I went outside the gate and just stood around. There on a small branch on the Sumac in front was Momma and Baby and Momma was feeding baby. By the time I got into the house and got my camera, Momma was done and further down the branch but still close by. I took some photos I will post tomorrow.

I have four large planters I inherited off a golf course thanks to my landscaper friend.. I have them on the south side of my home near the holding garden. I have my $69 per pound Blueberries planted in them. (that is an inside joke). I put some very large tomato cages that another gardener gave me because he got them at a close out for 5 cents and thought I needed 10. But i have taught him plenty and he appreciates it so I took them. They are the fences for my Blueberries.

I know, another 3 hour story from Mother Winter. Sorry, I have to show the scene. Now the cages are up and a large fish dies in the Koi Pond. I took him out of the Koi Pond and buried him, rest in peace, in the Blueberry pot nearest the Laundry Room French Door. I know, I am probably the only person you know that has a French Door in their laundry room. I love French Doors and it is also my planting room for my transplants.

Anyway, I guess I did not bury the fish deep enough because there are now all these very tiny flies flying above the pot. Well, we now have the entire population of the hummingbirds in the neighborhood. They have chosen to sit on the tomato cages and the pine tree next door and dive bomb the insects. I sometimes stand there for 1/2 hour just watching the action. I tried to take photos but did that not work and I do not have a video camera. Love you all.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Using a salad spinner. OMG. Yes today I was doing fine until the sun hit the courtyard. As soon as I was in direct sunlight I was in trouble in less than 5 minutes. I actually stumbled into the front area of the house because I could not see because I had so much sweat flowing down my forehead right into my eyes. But at 5pm the courtyard was again in the shade and it was actually pleasant and I got the majority of the gardening completed. Just a little fine tuning for tomorrow. My DH came out to see what I was doing about 6:30pm and I told him I was cleaning up the mess and would be in in a minute. "Cleaning up, what do you mean?" Well, when you are done planting you put all this stuff away and wash down the patio and check the irrigation. At that time his eyes glazed over and he went back to his ball game. I do not have a problem because after 36 years of marriage it is OK if he watches ball games and I garden. Actually we have had that rule for over 10 years because he would feel guilty and come out to help but then moan and groan. It was not his thing. One night I bought him a very nice bottle of Crown Royal and said we needed to talk. I told him after all these years that it was OK for me to garden and for him to watch sports. We should just meet in the Great Room at 4pm and go forward with couple things at that time. It has been great since then. He does still get upset when I do not need his help to fix a sprinkler or irrigation problem but our home is now very serene.

I did try painting our old home before we moved and I was still working and DH was retired. I did it one Saturday and just about killed myself. Two story house, stucco and wood trim that needed to be scraped. But I did realize, hello, I can hire a painter, electrician, plumber or whatever. No arguments since then. LOL, LOL, LOL. The last handyman I hired was a Custom Home Builder now a handy man until the recession is over. I gave him DH's honey do list. The three of us joked that he was saving DH from a lot of hot water because of all the things he was taking care of on the list. Many small things that were completed and we are very happy. I have had the handyman back many times and since he is a Custom Home Builder he has many contacts and is reasonable. Sorry, another long story from Mother Winter.

Oxford, MS(Zone 7a)

I think the snake might be a Gopher snake....without seeing the head it is hard to definately say.....a rattler's body is relatively heavy/fat in appearance and the body of a non-venomous snake is relatively slim and narrow....which this one seems to be by these photos...but like I said it is really hard to tell without seeing the head. Just remember..all snakes should be treated as dangerous just to be on the safe side.
I remove all snakes from my premises..except for King snakes..they kill and eat poisinous snakes. =0)

Heres a good link about identifying California snakes - http://www.californiaherps.com/identification/snakesid/common.html

You want all of what dear Sister Dee? I washed my cell phone with my Blue Jeans so I have to go get a new phone and get a smog check for my SUV. Talk with you guys later. Only 108 today. Big fire up at Mt. Charleston. Just up the road a bit with high winds and among very high trees.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Is it too late to get in on the cannas? pretty please sharon. anyone need any old fashoned day lilies? they are double orange on 36"+ scrapes. LMK I would rather give them away than toss the lot of them. see the attached.
I agree with gopher snake. I was trying to think of the name of the snake and it was a gopher snake. we were digging 10 ft deodor cedars from a christmas tree farm in florida. i spotted the snake and the owner said it was a gopher snake and it kills poison ous snakes as well as rats and mice. I also agree to aproach with caution as rattlers have been known to loose rattle. Pygmy rattlers are really bad about looseing the rattle. I almost picked one up thinking it was a weed at the golf course I worked at.
I don't think oil is going to get to linda. she is on the atlantic side, but maybe with time. I know florida is doing a mass shock and awe on any petrolium that shows up on the beach.
well we are in the low 90's this week. I am so happy as its easy to work out in the am and evening.

Lee, I have tried and tried, but I can't get the picture to work. I cut and pasted, even went thru my word procedure but the plant ID thread won't take the picture. Says it has to be JPG. But it won't give me any way to change it to JPG.

Sorry, I tried.
