I just want rain, forget the barrel. Wow, this one has been really difficult. Brown outs in the cities, several days of 100 deg. temp. I am actually getting used to it. In fact, I just work around it.
I never gave rain barrels a thought because we seldom have a period of no rain...until lately.Do you remember a few months ago I was praying for the rain to stop. I just can not seem to reach a happy medium. LOL We will all survive, I feel sorry for the animals.
Worst part is that it does not get too cool in the evening. It only goes down to the 80s. When you wake up it is like mid 80s and that is 6 a.m. Nothing you can do about it and it really makes the veggies grow. I am going to can pickels tomorrow or Friday.
Not much gardening going on just now. GH temp yesterday was 114....no I did not work there in that heat. LOL.
Have a great day. Just checking in. Hope you
Plant propagation part XVII based on my own experience
We are back in the 60's. V eggies aren't doing much although, I have a spindly bush, about 1' tall with a tomatoe hanging on. Size of a cherry tomato, poor little thing. I know I should just mulch it in, but can't bring myself to do it. It is struggling so. Supposed to be a beefsteak bush. But they say it is going back up to the mid 80's in a couple of days. I think my worms are all so far deep in the soil (gumbo) they will never see the light of day LOL Seeded Petunia's are doing so so, but the rest are just looking at me sad little leaves (no eyes you know) asking when the blankies will come off. Later, Lee
Well, we did get to 70 yesterday. Suppose to be around 85 today and 92 tomorrow. I hear you guys on TV and feel so bad for you. Especially if your power goes out. None of these presidents tackles it tho. Darn them. Altho, I have to say that all thru the West we are starting to see those wind turbines (modern day windmills) every hundred feet or so everywhere in the deserts. I think President Obama's idea is to move the electricity from the Southwest to the Northeast. I sure hope it works 'cause those things look like jackrabbits in the deserts. As far as the eye can see. All to get you guys some power. Hope it happens in our day.
Sharon, I know your heart is in the right place, but sometimes you can't move mountains. Meaning that in trying to help you might be doing more harm than good. Dawn knows the situation where she is. I am sure if she wanted some help she could get it. Or would grab your offer if it were possible.
Lee, we are in the same boat I think, but our day is coming. I we and our plants can just hang on.
I suspected what is wrong with Dawn community well is just what she stated. Unfortunately, thee majority of community wells are just like that. Dawn, I hope you are no drinking the water. If the arsenic level are to high here in Nevada, the turn off the wells.
But Dawn, you are right, I should no ride into town on my White horse and stir up the natives. And I really was not planning on doing that, just letting you know I could advise if you ever need any. Just think fellow gardeners being on a well where 16 individuals have to agree to agree.
Our weather at the moment is beautiful. About 76. But it will heat up real soon. Yesterday was 107. Tomorrow the mow and blow guys get here so I am going to dead head a bunch of cannas and roses. I am also going to dig some cannas and get them in the mail.
Lee, we have to plant our tomatoes here in Las Vegas early to beat the heat. We wrap each cage with clear painter's drop plastic and tie it at the top and make an individual greenhouse on each tomato. That holds in the moisture and heat and they take off.
Well you cannot see the patio for the Sumac leaves. Mother Nature is telling the Sumac to shed because then they will need less water. Well the two I have cover a span of over 75' so there are leaves everywhere. I will take a photo before I clean the patio this morning.
Have a great day and I will let everyone know when their little packages are on the way. At you later. JB stay cool.
good afternoon:
I thought I had issues with my growing. I would not wish a comunity well on anyone. now a private well is a great thing to have.
we had rain yesterday and it wiped me out but could not stop and rest till 6 pm.
stay cool everyone I am praying for rain for those who need it
Dave
Sharon, I like that method of planting tomatoes. Bet mine would have done much better if I had done that and it doesn't even need the real hot. It would automatically raise whatever temps approximately 10 degrees. Wouldn't you think? I will have to remember that next year.
I use to have a Sumac tree. Staghorn, and it was so beautiful in the fall. I can just see yours Sharon.
We did not have rain here, but it was cooler and partly cloudy with high humidity (a rarity), only 82° today. I sliced my big toe with a shovel today...it was my fault, as I rarely use the shovel without boots, even in hot weather. So I had to stop work, but I was not that ambitious today anyway....I had planted pole beans, lima beans, squash, cantaloupe, winter squash and zucchini. All old seeds, so I don't know if they will come up or not but it is late for these plantings anyway. I have been late on everything this year. I pulled up all the radishes and I will wait until fall to plant any more as they were gatting tough. Also I pulled up some of the peas that were done, or did not do well, but a few vines are going strong still with flowers, much to my amazement, as I was thinking it was time to pull them all out. The carrots and beets are still growing as well as the potatoes. The tomatoes are getting bigger, finally and some have flowers. The lettuce looks great. I have put row cover over one SFG to shield them from the heat and hopefully they will not bolt too soon. If they get bitter I will pull them all, but so far, they are wonderful and tender.
I want to finish the new perennial bed...it is almost all planted, but it look quite sparse as everything is fairly small. I think the spacing is about right, however.
The basil is getting bigger....anyone like pesto?
Where have you been evelyn? Working instead of on here huh? Hope you got something done. More than I did anyway. I had to go get my hair trimmed after 3 week ago perm as I have a drs appt. tomorrow.
All I wanted was my med prescription renewed and he wouldn't do it without seeing me first. It is for arthritis so how can that change? Guess he needs the money.
LOL, No Sharon, I don't need to be chided by you.
Jeanette ~ Yes, if I get online early in the day, sometimes I manage to stay on too long and there are too many distractions....then I get mad at myself for wasting valuable growing time. what projects are you working on right now? I know that weather must get discouraging, but would be great for lettuces...and other such items...no perms for me...my hair would look like a "Brillo Pad"...my mom used to do that to me, (and also put those tiny tin curlers in my hair for added punishment)...and once I let a very good hairdresser give me a "body perm"...big mistake!
I like your thick hair. Mine is so fine.
Sharon I only took it as a caring friend wanting to help. It just would not work with this group, it would more than likely back fire on me. The city will charge more when they take it too, if they do. My water is so cheap it is not free but it is real low. When they take it over, the water pressure will have to be enforced and I wait for that day. We talked to a well guy and he said my type of well system is not easy to add pressure pumps to for some reason. He told me a lot of stuff but it was a few years back and I don't remember what it was.
What gorgeous hair! I'm jealous! Mine has always been stick-straight... I want those soft curls!
You have my sympathy on the big toe- hope your tetanus shot was up to date! I recently read that 1 out of 5 tetanus cases was fatal. Pretty serious, not to mention painful.
Last week I 'pruned' my left index finger. Next day I realized it should have had stitches, but dr said too-bad-so-sad, too late. Jury's still out whether I'll lose the tip or not, but went out and got some GOOD leather gloves. I realized that I only need to wear one, on the hand that does NOT use the pruners- my right hand is always safe! Now I'm trying to reform into a glove-wearer.
good morning to all.
well its been a rainy day which translates to a down day. everything is growing quite well. I have sold more this year than any before. now to fill the holes.
I just wanted to chime in
I hope your finger is better also the toe. those can be the worst. I had a buddy who lost his big toe to a fiddle back spider bite. he was diabetic and had bought some big fuzzy slippers to keep his feet warm. well it just happens a spider had crawled in one and set up shop over night. It bit him which resulted in removal of the toe. It threw off his balance. He was a dear close friend who I lost one christmas day a few years back.
Dave
Well, nothing to be jealous of right now as I have it cut very short for summer, as thick hair when long can be a nuisance when working in the hot sun. On the other hand thin hair will not give the scalp adequate protection from the sun, so please wear something on that head....
Thanks, Dave, the toe is better as it did not bleed through my bandage last night and the throbbng stopped. I used first aid right away as after the first gushing of blood, I had a hose handy and ran cold water on it for a while and alternately staunched the wound by holding it closed very firmly. Then I tried to figure out how I could get to the house as I needed to keep my toe protected as well as walk down to the house. I used a part of the leftover pantyhose that I stored in my garden tote for tying up the tomatoes and used my outer shirt and wrapped up the toe and tied it with the pantyhose part. Then I went in, put on antibiotic ointment after the peroxide, then bandaged it up, and yes, my tetanus shots are up to date.
Yes, I am still like the little child playing in the dirt. It seems to be my destiny...:-)
Evie...
Just to let u know, the dr told me if I had "serious" injury (which he called clipping the end of my index finger, what I called a minor injury), the tetanus shot s/b updated every 5 yrs, not the normal 10 yrs, FYI, take care!
Thanks...I had a tetanus booster this year.
Me too. You know the doctor told me the number one cause of tetnus is rose scratches. Who knew?
Pughbear7- on July 1, 2010 you offered old fashoned double daylily, do you still have any to give away?
Since 'Big Kiss' bloomed last week I can't get enough of doubles... Thanks, Cristy
Hi Cristy:
Yes I have some available. after I get my sales for the week mailed on tuesday I am planning to get them ready to ship. I am going to trim them back and wash all the soil off so they go bare root. Please dmail me with a request for some.
I need everyone who wanted some of the daylilies to dmail me so I can process them out next week.
Thanks
Dave
Hello everyone, I want to apologize for using profanity on this list. I have been told by the administration about using the words b**** and D***. At my age, and being among the military for so long, I guess I never thought of those two words as profanity. In this world today I hear so many horrible things coming out of the mouths of younger people that I used to giggle to think I said some of the things I said. I will not use it again I promise. I am sorry if I offended anyone.
silliest thing happend on the way to the garden!.... I found some just like the ones I just asked for..... I was given some in a trade in late spring, they have been sitting with their roots in water, too lazy to plant. They flowered today.
they were a NOID, but "nicer than ditch lilies" and so they are. thanks, cristy

REALLY JB???? Oh Oh I might have some of those no nos in my mail box??? LOL if that is all they have got to do is read our crap I feel sorry for them. Think Dave started that when he started the site. Oh well, guess we've got to clean out our mouths. Shame on you JB. You are a bad influence on me.
OK ladies, I just used my Shark. First time I have had a chance to do that. I gotta tell you that I sure do hope I was using it wrong 'cause I am worn out. And my floor is only about 300 sqft. That cannot be right. I have to find my instruction book but I am too tired. That thing wrestled me all over the house. If I am not using it wrong, you all have got to be either the strongest or the skinniest (or both) people I know.
I'll bet if I did this every day I would lose all this weight I want to. Waddaya think? If it weren't so early in the day I would have a beer. It is 80 degrees out there now and suppose to get up to 95. We'll see.
Anybody wanna buy a Shark cheap? And where is this "hand held" one you are talking about? I couldn't find one on their site. Maybe I didn't know what I was looking at. That might be more my speed. But I probably couldn't get up off the floor when I was done.
Maybe we need to stop talking about beer and gin on here too! I am not sure if I am embarrassed or annoyed that we are being censored to that extent. Oh well, I will clean up my act or leave . If it was not for you guys I would not even be here half the time. I have
so little time but I adore all of you and I am so afraid I will forget myself and say a bad word maybe I should just leave and forget it. I just think there is so much good comes of this forum i do not want to give it up because I am annoyed. I guess I should have read the rules, but I have not changed since Dave had it and I am sure I must have said sometjhing wrong over the past year. Maybe I never got caught. LOL Shame on me... You even sent me stockings to go to Mass. Hmmmmm maybe we should not talk religion. Now I am being nasty. Sorry. Gotta go, I am canning pickles and I am tired and need to clean up and make dinner for the gang. Later. Hugs and Nice thoughts to all.
Jen, I did not buy the Sharp, but the one I have works great and does not use as much energy as a plain old wet mop. Are you talking about the steam mop?
JB!! Don't even think of leaving over some dumb ridiculous thing like that. I suppose it would be different if we were talking nasty or showing porn pictures. LOL, I probably wouldn't know one if I saw it. But if that is the worst they find to b------ (whoops) almost got caught. LOL, I don't even have the military to blame. I doubt if i would apologize for it tho.
I would apologize for a lot less than that, but not that.
Maybe we should be having church services here on Sundays. Good grief, please don't give them any ideas. We will all be attending.
Well, I guess I am going to have to learn that thing. Yes a steam mop. A Shark. Is that a Sharp? I will find the instructions somewhere. I don't think it should wear me out that much.
And then I ordered the wrong vacuum hose. I sent for a 36foot hose, but didn't get the one with the electricity so it wouldn't run the powerhead. So had to return that one to get the other one for another $100!! Plus the $19 shipping the first oneback.
Good Grief, a 36 inch hose, where does that go? Mine does not have a hose. It just has a place for water, the triangle base and the handle. Works like a gem. Of course you plug it in. It gets very hot and you may not leave it still on the floor or it takes the shine off. Fountd that out the hard way.
I am just pondering what I am going to do. I spent $100 on the Plant Scout and I have been sending people to DG in all my paperwork that goes with my plants, but I do not have to do that. I am not in this business to make money. I know I was wrong using that language, but I do not like to be told I was wrong at 81 years old. It just rubs me the wrong way especially since I pay to be here. I think if I had said the F word or used the Lord's name improperly or some other nasty language I would approve of being scolded. I am just annoyed that I did not even know I was being bad. HA!
I must let this go or I will just explode. Then they will hear some words that may burn up the internet and I will be thrown off for sure. Good night. I think I will go say my rosary.
I am thinking nasty thoughts and that may help me cool off.
No JB, look what I said. The 36 foot hose is a vacuum hose. Not for the steam mop. I changed the subject I think.
I don't know what they said to you JB, but let it go. Either that or your blood pressure will be out of sight and that is not worth it. Who wrote to you? Melody or Terry, or someone else?
Go say your rosary and forget about it. You were not wrong in my eyes and I doubt that Lee, Dave, Linda, Dawn, evelyn, Sharon or anyone else that reads this has withdrawn their membership because of what you said. Whatever it was. So forget about it.
awwwmmmmm...awwwmmmm think peacefull thoughts.
all will be right with the world.
its past my new bed time
have a great evening
Dave
Jeanette you are cracking me up, but I so relate. I like stuff that I don't have to read the manual on. lol
JB I got chastised by Dave for explaining my name was not Hellen, but it was Hell In Zone 11 (Sunset zone/not USDA).
I argued the point but did not do it again until now. Is that offensive to you guys?
I'd order DL except nothing comes here in good shape this time of year.
No Dawn, I normally do read the manual, but thought "how difficult can this be, and I don't know where the manual is". I should have known when I tried it the first time and it didn't work for me. I took a quick look, and still did not find it. So, guess I will have to be serious about this before I do it again, or I just won't.
I thought you had explained that to me since Dave left. Have you been scolded since? I am not that sensitive. However, I do not like to hear the F word and others equally offensive, used in general conversation. I find it a show of ignorance. But, if it didn't bother anyone else I would just change my menu of threads or forums.
OK, Jeanette ~ What is so difficult about the Shark Steam Mop? Did you get a different one that has the combo/vaccum cleaner? Mine is just a steam mop. I put it together without even reading the intructions, as there was only one way to put it together. Then, I fill the water reservoir, put on the cap, put the steam pad on, plug it in, wait a few seconds, then steam mop the kitchen floor. If the floor is quite dirty, I may have to change the pad before completing my chore. I did not have to wrestle with it or anything like that. I wish I could help...please explain what is the difficulty. And what vaccuum cleaner has a 36' hose? Now I would wrestle with that for sure!
Right on, Dave! And Ringo turned 70! (He's even older than I!) ☮✌♪ ♬ ♫
JB ~ We love you, so whatever you do, don't leave us! ❀
Dawn ~ And what is your point? (I don't think Dave actually chastized you, he was just confused, that's all...) Sometimes we all get a little confused at times...LOL!☺
I came back late from town today and 2 of the 15 petunias that I potted up into one gallons started blooming....I went to HD today after the chiro to return something and stopped to look at their petunias...oh, I am so glad that I am growing my own...no matter how they turn out. I think we appreciate whatever we start from seed much more than anything purchased from jumbo-packs. When I saw all those petunias in bloom in their 6-pk containers, I thought that maybe I will get a chance to have really healthy, long-lasting blooming plants for the remainder of the summer and probably into the fall until it gets cold, whenever that will be. I am not counting on any past records as who knows what kind of weather we will be getting this winter (or fall for that matter..)??? I will take pictures when they get more blooms or more of them come into bloom. ❀
A Shady Nook.....
Dawn ~ Well, I don't think you need to worry about that, as Dave (DG) is no longer our "Grand Puba" anymore. Now we have Internet Brands' Miguel.
I see you and I are the only ones up at this hour. I just couldn't sleep tonight, hopefully I will be able to in a little while, as in these hot days it is better to work outside in the early morning hours and then go inside for the hottest part of the day...the bugs are out in the late afternoon and early evening, especially the 'skeeters.
Bachelor Button....
Good grief! I'm gone a day and you all get into trouble!!
Honestly, JB, I can't believe they bothered to say anything- I certainly wasn't offended- I didn't even notice! If they keep that up, people will be leaving DG in droves!
Interesting bit about the rose scratches- who would've thought?
Morning Sweet Friends, I slept on my "scolding" and I am not going anywhere. I re read the dmail from Terry and she said it was on this list. I remember back a few weeks ago we were all venting about the weather, loosing plants, etc. and that must have been when I said it. I just can not find it. I am going to send you the link Jen and see if you can find it. I have tried. Just want to see what had me so upset. LOL. Then I am letting it go.
I want to change the subject for a moment and show you all what our DAVE sold me last year and I thought it died but it did not, and here it is. Blooming for the first time. My favorite hosta. It is just georgeous..
Rains are coming Dave, thanks for sending them. I do hope it is enough to make a difference.
Are you shipping in this heat or isn't it 90 deg. out there.
I will be checking back later. Thanks for all your kind words. I was hoping I had not offended any of you and obviously I did not. Shame on all of you for tolerating such foul language. . Terry said she had edited others for doing the same thing. That was to make me feel good I guess. No one can censor my thoughts. LOL Later. Love and Hugs.
I agree with the rest. I have not been offended by anything said on here and probably have been guility myself a time or two. In fact, have really enjoyed some of the banter. The yard is coming along, have been getting a day here and there above 80, but not together, although to be honest, it is great for this old gal.
Has anyone tried to start hardy milk weed from seed? I sowed 5 seeds, 2 came up, and are about 4 inches tall, but they have been like that forever. I am keeping them in the greenhouse for now, since I know they probably wouldn't survive outside. I also tried the corkscrew vine, going crazy in the greenhouse, both are planted in pots, so I can bring into the house in the fall when the weather gets cold.
I love trying new (to me) plants. Have you ever heard of anyone that can't grow Moonflower vine, and morning glory vines? I just can't seem to get them beyond a couple of inches, they germinate, but then either die, or sit there looking at me. The Morning glory trees are just about 3 inches tall and not growing at all.
I don't want anyone of you to leave, I would be lost without you. I know there are times you don't know I am here, but I really do enjoy each and everyone of you. Thanks for just being there.
On a slightly different note, just thought I would tell you I have been busy making 4 flowergirl dresses for my Neighbor' son's wedding. Started with a wedding dress, took it apart, including the lace, and have designed and sewn them. I am now putting the lace back on the little dresses. Problem, I am afraid the white of the dresses is too much and trying to figure what to do to add the bridal colors and not make them garish. Her colors are rose gold and eggplant, really hard to find, Ideas???? Lee
IT IS RAINING.........THE BARNYARD IS WET...............THE TREES HAVE RAINDROPS ON THEM.................I AM SO THANKFUL...................
Lee, I am jealous, I can not even sew on a button without help. I used to love to sew but now I can not thread a needle because I can not see the hole. LOL...oh well, I have other talents....................like cussing, drinking and cavorting around................seriously, I thinks it is wonderful you have the talent and time to sew garments that difficult. God. Bless you woman. Have a great day. I am going to take a walk in the rain. Yahoo.
Our little trees are out there just sucking up all the drops. Hope you can get an idea how dry it is.
If you enlarge the picture of the little trees you will see the brown grass surrounding them.
I will see you all later and again, thanks for being there for me. I am really an old softy.
Hugs.
Good grief if I had know you guys were on here at 1 o'clock in the morning I would have signed on instead of reading.
No, just a plain steam mom evelyn. I don't capitalize your name 'cause you don't in your sign on.
Maybe I am just too impatient with it. I have to wait for it to build up steam every couple of swipes and I don't want to do that. But, it won't work without the steam.
OK you guys. My 36 foot hose is for my central vacuum. It plugs into the wall and the tank is in the basement. Best appliance they ever invented.
JB, you old cusser you, so glad it is raining on you. LOL And not me. Send that to me and I will see for myself what Terry didn't like. I would love to see "the list". Probably stuff on there that none of us have ever heard.
Lee, don't feel bad, I can't grow MGs either. I can grow them, they just won't bloom for me. I don't get enough sun in here for them, I think.
And, where in the world do you find time to sew for your neighbor in the summer? That
's a winter job. Tell her to get married in the winter.
Yes, cusser, I see the brown grass. It will turn green if you get enough of that liquid sunshine.
Evelyn, you are a walking disaster. Throw your back out using a salad spinner! Now your toe. Sounds like me earlier in the spring.
Went to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist for my asthma. Yes, it is being caused by sinus drainage and the red eyeliner I have been wearing is allergies. So I now have a new nose spray and new eye drops.
I actually have done little gardening this last week. Just to hot and I decided I did not need any more flowers. My holding garden is full and I have a very large order coming in of irises from Snow Peak. Also have the vegetables going strong in the greenhouse. The hardy hibiscus do not need the greenhouse. They are thriving in the holding garden. I just need to move some so I can get some seeds planted. I am going to try direct sow in to the holding garden. I am digging black bamboo and cannas. Hope everyone is ready for them. So finally I am acting like I am retired. I am enjoying it.
My tomatoes are sweet and ripe. And they are delicious. Still have about 10 Vidalia onions left and three ripe avocados so I am having a large summer sandwich for breakfast. I eat breakfast about noon. Wish I had a home grown cucumber. Phoenix is having great success with the Armenian Cucumber.
Went outside at 8am and it was like a sauna. We having ceiling fans on the patio, so that makes it bearable. Stayed and watched the birds until 9:30 then gave up and came inside. I have lot to do inside so no big deal.
Have a great day. I cannot imagine I have not been called on the carpet with my ranting. I am with you JB, and I am only 68 in less than a month. My theme is "YOU DO NOT WANT TO MESS WITH ME". And I am sure that does not surprise one of you.
Photo is giant Magnolia next door. Over 15' tall and at least 6' wide. Back of leaves are not brown. Flowers are enormous and I have seed pods. I will let you know when they open and drop their seeds. I have the pods in with some rice. Suppose to dry the pods and prevent mold. I also have irises seeds. A bumble bee pollinated one of my irises.
I agree, that sewing is for the winter, but the young want summer weddings it seems. The dresses are for her 4 granddaughters, (the grandson is the ring bearer). (wedding is for youngest son) 3 are flower girls and the fourth is just to be held, since she is so young. I will post a picture when they are done. There will be flowers somewhere on them so I will be legal LOL
Glad to hear someone else has trouble with MG's I was thinking how stupid I am, can't even grow "weeds".
BTW maybe we need to come up with our own language (like when we were kids) and then the powers that be won't know what we are saying.!!!!!!!!!!!! I also enjoy a good cuss now and then LOL
Lee
You guys are a group of characters. You know when they don't approve of your thread content, it is deleted then and there.
I have good luck with MG usually but many and most of them did not reseed this year. The ones I grew from a box never germinated. I need to soak some of my favorite hot pink and white striped ones, since they did not come back this year and I gave a lot away in seed trades, so I don't have many left.
I love Magnolias, they burn here unless shaded though.
