THE GARAGE CAFE - where we are fixing and repairing daily!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Nice. I'm just about out of Daylilies to show. Only have about 12 of them since they say they won't grow in my zone. Just bought this one online last year named "Going Bananas"

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok, since they will not grow for you, I can fix that.. just gimme them all. Seriously!

Then that will take care of the matter.

Oh, I like that one. They say practically everything won't grow in my zone if its not a tropical plant. Whatever. Even received an e mail today from an online retailer saying I should cancel my Rudbeckia order with them because they're not recommended for my zone. I've grown them every year and they do fine here. Geez

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

JOn, now if I can grow DL's in the bog here.. you can grow them there! Remember, mowing is not an option lately...

Um, heres some of my creeping Jenny.. it is completely under water...you cant tell by the pic, but that tile goes under one of my paths and that area is full of water!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Sounds like its your Drowning Jenny....gurgle gurgle. If it keeps raining you're gonna need to get yourself a canoe to check on your plants. LOL

I have no idea why they say daylilies only as far south as Zone 9??? Don't have many of them, but haven't had a problem with any of them so far. You just stick them in the ground and water them until they're established. The only time of year I give them extra water is right now (when they're blooming).

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I'm in zone 6b and theres daylilies growing all over KY. I will mulch them good for the winter, but alot of people around here don't even do that.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Some of them must have naturalized, a bit, in Kentucky. Seems they're listed for Zones 3-9 so they must be pretty hardy. My parents are in Zone 5 and they return each year very lightly mulched. Don't notice any naturalized though. Do like to see the tall wild pink & white phlox up there this time of the year.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I mulch some beds of them and wish I could mulch them all for weeds.. but any way, some beds are good. others are so so.

If I had my druthers I would yank them all and replant them on the higher ground, but then that means killing the prairie.. so.. not so sure I want to do that. Besides, too much like work!

If I only knew nthen what I know now! LOL! 2020 hindersite!

Well, i got teeny tiny Burpless on the vine coming!

Hey,hey, hey! Ya started a new party without me so I'm crashin's!

New gomphrena "Fireworks" finally opened enough to take picture.

My pepper plants were loaded but we were having a hard time keeping up so my neighbor came over and cleaned out the big ones for salsa and other sauces....I DO expect a jar of sumthin later...LOL

Big maters are finally coming off. First to ripen were the grape maters"Juliet". Pick the first Kellogg's Breakfast Thursday. Hub's always pick them too soon so I laid it in the kitchen window to finish with dreams of mater samitch dancing in my head. Checked on it Friday and hub's had sliced the WHOLE THING up and ate it w/ Friday's supper. ACK!

I HAVE MELONS! Ok so thy're only about the size of a jawbreaker but they're Ambrosia so they only get 2-3 lbs and I'm lickin' my chops to taste the first one.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I'm in zone 6b. Every where I go around here I see daylilies growing wild. They are all the same color, so I think they are what is called 'ditch lilies' When I see a large group of them they are pretty, all orange and hundreds of flowers blooming at the same time.

The daylilies that the lady up the street gave me are the same ones I see growing wild. I will keep them separedted from my other daylilies.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

I had never heard of a "Ditch Lily" until seeing posts referring to it. Guess they are pretty aggressive and should be given plenty of space away from other plants you like.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I've seen patches of them along the roads here that are 6 - 8 wide and 20 feet in length. They are really pretty when their all in bloom. Its a beautiful orange color. And they get very tall. I'm 5'8" and when I stand next to them, the blooms are in my face. I don't have to bend to look at them.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey-a hi-ya Red! Welcome aboard! nice collection of goodies there.

Finally had a day without rain.. I got brave and mowed some graa. NOw hope the clips dry out so I can rake them up for the critters.

About the only daylily I cannot stand to see a total field of is Stell ade oro. Stella is ont of those that is good for a specimen m planting or border edger, but no no no on any en masse plantings.. that mustard yellow is nausiating. gag gag!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

I agree Blossom in regards to Stella D'oro. I know it's a great blooming Daylily, but I don't care for it at all. Haven't seen the offspring of Stella D'oro (Purple Stella, Ruby Stella), but apparently they don't bloom as much as the original.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I have Purple de oro...its nice, but taller than Stella.

This is a seedling hybrid of mine that is by Stella.. it is a NOID. the color is richer than this pic.

I like it Blossom. Can I come over, dig it up and move it to Florida?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, maybe later when the clump is older and there is more to share. So what should we call her?

She is the same size as Stella. I love that greenthoat with the yellow and that eyezone, very nice if I must say so. I juse wish the camera would take a better shot of the yellow. Its a shade lighter than Stellas mustard color.

I will have to go shoot Purple De oro...

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Hmm, it takes some time to come up with names. Usually have to think about it for days. So far I've come up with "Peach Innocence" and "Pow Wow Peach" and "Peaches And Dreams"

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! Well you keep thinking! Well have to host a popularity drawing on her! .

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

You gotta be thinking of a name also Blossom. It's your baby....and you don't even know who the father is!!!! Paternity test? LOL

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, sommmme Bee dunit! Oh heck I am terrible on names. I told the hub we had to name the dog after her mother because I lacked originality!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

come on lil melon, you can do it....grow for mamma

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

here's another one of the un-named daylily culls I bought at a $3.00 a clump from a local hybridizer. He musta had the keepers hid out because if this is what he calls a cull,ya probably need shades to look at the keepers

Thumbnail by bigred
Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Group shot...aka what happens when you don't deadhead. Suppose to be Casa Blanca oriental lily and David tall garden phlox. Self sown coneflower and seedlings from David. Lilies are dwindling and David's getting pushed out by it's off spring so I need to move the David and lily since I like these 2 together

Nice photos Patty. I don't think the hybridizers, of anything, sell the great ones for $3.00. I'm sure they've seen them all bloom before they offer to sell them.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

It just depends on whose hybridizing or whose naming. It costs money to name a daylily and show it and get awards so those go for a premium. Lots of those culls can get named by anyone.

Patty, that is a gorgeous DL. If you dont want it, Im sure I have a spot in the waywarde daylily patch here for it.

Jon, that no name stella with the eye, it has 3 pods on it!

Never mind the grass in this shot.. its a named DL... surely not as lovely as pattys unknamed!

Thumbnail by BLOSSOMBUDDY
Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Oh,I didn't figured I'd get a clump for $3.00 if he was still evaluating them. He was selling what he didn't find worthy of any more evaluating. I need to get back over that way next year for his clump sales. Missed it this year.

Another lily Casa Blanca in a bed that's too shaded now because the Japanese maple finally has some size on it. I need to get some surviores(sp?) flag to mark stuff to be moved in the fall.

Thumbnail by bigred
Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I like that, course then I like all lilies and DLs!

Heres an oldie of our garden several years back.. sorry about the blurrr! Its hard to take a pic of a pic at my age with my hands!

Very very nice Blossom

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks Jon. Its a site now.. needs some serious TLC. But we keep plugging away at it.

Heres Purple de Oro.. um I think.. I got two purples next door to each other and I would have to double check on the map. They are both very similiar...

Well, I best get out to the gardenm while its cool and not raining!

Wow that's dark. Love it. Keep plugging away Blossom....little by little so you don't feel overwhelmed.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Im atrying!

Todya is mowing, raking and the thistle erractication project. Oh how I hate that project. Derned things bite!

I only have one clump of that Purpele De Oro. I hope in the end it divides like crazy like Stella de Oro.

Im cleaning an old bed and will have room for some new DLs when I get thruogh.

(Note: our thread has been moved to a new forum!! Group hug the Admins!!)

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Sketty anyone... im tryin gto take my mind of of my DL disaster..just when I think we do something goood...sniff, sniff. tear dripping.

Looks like this week will be consumed in eating...RED, whard ya hide da chocolate?

in my tummy

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I was gonna send ya some dark C, but it was to hot to ship when I sent you the bug. Im still mad the PO destroyed her. Sheesh.. aint nothing sacred?

Now Im on bended kneez hoping the drift dint kill my DLs... the verdict is still out.. no new regrowth has been appearing. Im screaming inside.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I accidently hit one of my daylilies with brush killer. I'm hoping it recovers.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Saw a little new growth out in my two plots... so there is hope.

Anyway, note to all...., wayward home for any DL's here. Dmail if ya got them and dont want them...!

Brush killer should be selective. Round-up is a total kill, Ornamec will kill grass but not DL's Lord, its your faithful gardener here, BB.. you know what I need!

Been a bad week for mowing.. burnt a couple of belts...I just cannot seem to mow 4 foot tall with a 60 inch deck and not do that. Topping the acreage mowing.. gsheesh!

Crawdad, anyone?

Thumbnail by BLOSSOMBUDDY
Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I'll take the crawdad!!
