THE GARAGE CAFE - where we are fixing and repairing daily!

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

The tropical rains are my biggest problem with iris also. I have to practically lay the rhizomes right on top of the soil to lessen the probability of rhizome rot.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Any iris looking for new home can contact me. I have room to offer them a good home.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, they are not sposed to be buried to deeply regardless. Rain is one thing, but the standing water I get in the spring.. thats another issue..

So are you getting rain now? When your done with the cloud, send it my way please!

Marti d-mail me will talk there.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Not much rain this week. Mostly sunny and breezy today. Pretty typical late August weather with highs around 90 and lows in the mid-upper 70's. Some "seabreeze-front" thunderstorms, west of here, in the Everglades. The sea breeze is pretty strong so the thunderstorms will probably drift/move westward, away from here.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Looks like we got rain coming form the west out in Iowa and the Caarolinas are in for a blow. Should have the much needed rain here on the prairie by tomorrow. Im ok with that, but that stuff in the Atlantic is worrysome.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Hope you get your needed rain Blossom. So far so good with hurricanes staying away from Florida. This latest hurricane won't be much of a problem if it goes right down the middle of its projected track. By Thursday morning it should be much clearer regarding exactly where it's headed. I remember the last hurricane (Bob) that hit New England in 1991. I just happened to be there, on vacation, when that happened. It was very strange a couple of days after it happened in August. The wind whipped salt water caused all the foliage on the trees to turn brown and fall off in a couple of days. It had the look and that distinctive smell of October in the air, but it was only August. It was quite strange.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, this morning they started evacuating some areas in NC. I have been on the coast around Cape Hatterus and New England and those seas can get really nasty. The eye is on the storms there.

Its cloudy here and fixing to rain, but has not blessed us yet. Our storms are not like those on the coast but can be just as devastating sometimes.

It has been very dry and the woods here are a potential fire hazard as are the farmfields with the early fall coming on.

The pond on the prairie has virtually dried up except for a puddle and all the little frogletts that are still part tadpole are struggling to survive. I hope they can make it out of the mud before its too late and they die a premature death becasue the moisture is gone. If we do not get the needed rain, they wil all die. As it is its just almost all mud and they are not able to hop much yet.. Its horrible when this happens and they end up dying from lack of the water and there are gazillions of potential mosquito eaters that we hope hop out of there!

While this photo looks like a pretty shot of the woods here, you know how dry it is just by the suns rays and the dust in the air. Its very dusty here now and will get worst as harvest gets on in the farm fields.

I lost a chicken yesterday due to a respitory issue and the dust. Poor guy literally suffocated with a lung infection from the dirt blowing here from neighboring farms. A lot of this wind errosion can be prevented. But some peope have no clue on how to manage their land. They over graze, they create dirt lots, they do a lot of mismanagement that promotes the errosion and that is just plain stupid to let your dirt blow away. And granted in years when it is so dry, it often cannot be helped, but to promote it by ill management is really bad.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Love the rainy nights, or Windshield wipers slapping time, or or or, Drivng my life away?

I kinda like Willies, Uncloudy Day myself, but that aint no rain musac!

Course in my neck of the woods we could be looking like the theme from Dorothy....but I doubt it. Not yet. We are still at the calm before any storm.

Cant play Fred yet... Rain drops are not falling yet on my head... well, keep them dancing feet moving! We need some poliwog music!

Pull up a rock and welcome to the loofa hut! Its as tropical as I can get here!

How about "Lightnin' Strikes" by Lou Christie. LOL A blast from way back

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Im to old to remember if Lightnin Strikes was polineasian!

Awww, hows about .. let a smile be your umbrella? Now thats older than dirt too!

Course as dusty as it gets around here, we could try a chorus of OKLAHOMA.. Where the wind comes racing cross the .. LOL! Now those were the days Men were men and women could shoot like men!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, Jon, we have a winner, We are singing in the rain! Whooohooo! Time to move back to the Garage though, the Loofa Hut is leaking. Will keep ya posted when the tide comes rolling in! Will someone please bring in the watermelon and the barbie?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh, here is the poliwog puddle at the bog.... the black area surrounding it is like a peatmoss sponge matt and was where the water table used to be....I took that pic on the weekend and have not had the time to get out there since.....hope this rain you conjured up will filler back up. That puddle is literally teaming with little frogs in there and close up it looks like a bubbling cualdron as they poke their heads up for air, but are not able to leave there water hole because they still have polytails! They are about the size of quarters! Course it if fills that hole back up, means we got a helluva a lot of rain and no one needs that muc, not all at once anyways.

We had one year that the thing dried up completely and it was a horrible sight wiht hall the poor lil guys that could not makle it.

Keep the rain a coming for now though it is very welcome! There is hope yet.

Glad you're getting some rain. I can't wait for the first cold front to come through here and bring us the beginning of the perfect weather. Gonna be another 6 or 7 weeks unfortunately.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, its been raining slow and steady here for a few hours....hope it keeps up all day.

I dont reckon its amounted to much yet but we are grateful. It will probably get hot and humid later. The grass looks a wee taad greener than yesterday. Yesterday it was pretty brown and pretty crispy.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, Mr. Coyotee paws... your dancing feet is filling the rain gauge.. we might get an inch! Here, we are praying for more!

Elsewhere, lets hope it lightens up.

Im eager to get out to the bog later today to see if the tide has actually come in to raise the waterlevel there. I suspect though it may just soak through the peat before it can reach its own level on the shore line.

Big foot lurks in me garden..

Well, we are getting more rain here Coyote paws! Dance dance dance....

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Amazing what 8/10ths of rain will do! The pond has expanded. Yay!

Keep dancing though!

Keep dancing. It's still looking more like a puddle than a pond.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I know.. well, its raining now.. Time will tell how much we got in the morning. I did not empty the rain gauge from todays so it will be a combined reading.

Ok! Its not exactly Row row row yer boat, but the froggies are much happier!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, we have had some sunny days. been very pleasant. Thank you for the rain! It made a big difference.. been moving containers closer to the house. Hears winter weather advisories for MN already so that means frost is not too far off. Could be anytime or a month or better before we see it. So also bringing plants into the house.

Gotta fix the mower. It appears I have another worn belt. Sheesh, thats 3 this year. NOt happy with that.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Glad you've been getting some rain. Down here we've been getting plenty of rain the past week. Probably a bit too much the last few days. Had to move snapdragon seedlings under protection because the rain keeps smashing them down. Other than that the temperatures have been tolerable, especially at night with low to mid 70's.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Stopped by Lowes this afternoon and noticed the 2011 flower and vegetable seed packs have just arrived. Picked out some leaf lettuce, swiss chard, spinach seed packs. It will be time to start the vegetable garden in about 2-3 weeks.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh Lord, already? LOL Well I have been moving stuff indoors...getting ready for spring as fall comes blowing in.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

They gotta get the new seeds out here in the fall. That's when most of the gardening starts down here. By the time December gets here most of the seed packs have been picked over. They usually get reduced to half price by February.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! well, to every season, turn turn! Your turn!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I just got done making a list of all the seed packs I have from generous folks, piggy swap and trades. Over 200 packs. Now just to get the beds ready for planting in the spring.

Raining all day today, so no gardening. I did go over to the Humane Society this morning and put in some time cleaning kennels and playing with the dogs and cats. I'm going to volunteer there 3 - 4 days a week. Gives me something to do besides watch TV especially on bad days when I can't do anything in the garden.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, thats sweet! Nice to see someone loving animals. Its so sad that so many owners cannot take care of their pets these days.

When your done with that rain cloud plug in its GPS and send it my way! We are so dry you woudl think its Oklahomae dust bowl here.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Still raining here. I've got a flooded area right out the back door. My niece and her husband are staying in a tent in back of the trailer til their trailer gets put in next door, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I hope they are staying dry out there.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, it was drizzling here and had some rain earlier this morning, but not enough to save the taddies. Its a sad day back at the bog. The water disappeared and its just awful. They were soooo very close to hopping out, but their tails were just too long yet.

Sniff.....sniff

tear....

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, where is everyone?

been suspiciously quiet around here.... no banging, clanging, eating, or chatter.......no barking, whining? hmmm....must be harvest time!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Ya, I'm busy between my garden and helping my niece with her new trailer. They moved the trailer on last Monday, her husband got thrown in the hospital Monday morning and they took out his kidneys on Tuesday morning, so she has been running up and down from Lexington to Somerset all week. I've made a run to Lexington on Wed to take her up to get his car which got left there when he went into the hospital. He can't come home until she gets the trailer hooked up to electric, water and sewer and with him not working she is running out of money. $1,100.00 just to put in the electric, than we have to figure out the water and sewer lines.

He has to stay in as clean an environment as possible and have dialysis 3 times a week. He is on the top of transplant list, especially because he now has no kidneys. They were so rotten and diseased that they were poisoning him so they had to go. Each kidney was over 10 lbs each and 12 - 15 inches long and 12 inches wide. They sent us a picture of one of his kidneys. Gross!!!

On a better note, I received my order from Brecks today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
35 Double Daffodils bulbs
35 Pink daffodils - its a collection
51 Tulip mixed
4 astilbes, 1 - Deuschland White, 1 - Peach Blossom (pink), 1 - Red Fanal, 1 - Lavender

I am going to spend tomorrow planting.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh my, well, we will pray for you and for health improvements surely they will help!

Im drooling on your daffs! Besides being a hemaholic, Im a daffoholic too.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I guess in a couple years I'll have daffs to trade. LOL!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

fingers crossed and praying!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, party time... cake anyone?
