Containers 2010 - WHose IN! - part 2

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my honey dug the holes... and filled it with rocks & dirt... really packed it down with another smaller post... I was standing next to him and he packed them so hard I could feel the ground shake standing next to him..... think they are down 3 feet... they aren't going anywhere

I did a photo bucket thing once. It went inactive for a short time and the next thing I know, ALL MY PICS disapeared.

The best thing for storage is a memery stick. Get some software where you can make albumns, enhance your pics, title them etc and put them on a stick.

I use PhotoImpression4 wher I can do a lot of neat stuff to the pics. It has capture so I can take and make a contact sheet like this... I make contact sheets for mapping my gardens.

Example: My garden at the back porch.. it has all of these flowers in it.

Im going to take these later and make a collage how the garden is laid out so I have better mapping.

My gardens are big and it has taken me literally years to take photos of all my "babies"

I have them mapped on paper.. but the papermaps get ratty and so as I get them done on the puter, I will be also able to print the maps and correct them as I add or delet plants! Been a huge undertaking!

very nice job!!!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

well thanks 1 ...
I can be encouraged... here's more of the roof aspect of it there... the sod is from this firm that makes it for Yankee Stadium.. so I thought the marble bases were an obvious choice...for stepping stones..

That is amazing when you consider ALL of it had to be hauled from somewhere else. Great job and sweet space.

Gordon, I also saw your pics on "too many plants". You have a wonderful outdoor room there and the plants are so beautifully layered and arranged. All that's needed is a plate of nibblies and a glass of wine and closed eyes to take in the scents. :)

I love you area!!!!!!! My DH just doesnt get it.... I would love to just sit in your area! I'm upstate ,,when I decide to do some shopping in the city,,I'll come visit!!.. lol

must need a lot of water up there huh... that's hot

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

yes.. it needs water..after I water.. it's about 100 gallons of ferts disolved in water to feed them..
I read an interesting bit on trees transpiring water.. that you could lean a ladder aganst a big maple tree.. and you could carry buckets of water up the ladder.. and throw the water into the air at the top.. and the tree would give off more water in the day day than you could carry up in buckets and dump..
the small co-op here actually uses more water in the winter than the summer.. I don't know who abuses the water in the winter for them...

interesting.

I use SuperThrive for fertilizer.. one drop in a gallon of water..plants zoom pretty good with it.

Yesterday it was so hot all my plants in containers suffered. I need to water thme this morning.

My coleus container.. w/ basil..a tomato is just off to the right .. I always think of triming them both back.. but this year I did it early.. to keep them somewhat in bounds.. 3 or 4 of the planters house basil.. I'd like to make 52 packets of pesto for the freezer.. from my basil.. garlic... olive oil.. and grated Parmisan cheese.. and have one a week till next year...
Helpful Note :.... I used to put the pesto in a baggie and roll it up... ..but in useing it i'd have to heat it up to melt it... which changes the make up of the grated Parmisan cheese in it... then I got the ,for me.. ground breaking idea.. the next year I put the pesto in a baggie as before... but press it flat and stacked this way in the freezer... filling up the baggie.. when I open it to use.. it's about like a 5" x 5" thin sheet of frozen pesto.. I just drape it over the pasta... and it instantly melts ready to eat...
Most of my planters are now 2" or on this one 1 1/2" builders foam from HD or Lowes.. cut and screwed / glued together .. and covered with an acrylic stucco..
edited for:
OH Blossom.. I have a bit of superthrive in a foliar spray. the brug folks talk about.. with molasses and beer... ST >> Seaweed and epsom salts..Tea tree oil, MG and some other things... I try and use once a day early or late...

Blossombuddy, what are those plants in the first photo at the top of this thread? There's one with purple heart shaped leaves and one under it that is a whitish gray color. They look awesome.

Sylguy, you have the same problem I do, caliche clay. I don't know why it took me so long to realize I couldn't amend it. I'm still can't believe it.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

angedawn47, Isnt that an awesome collection of color in that pot!.... your gonna love this..

Go to my thread the GPS 10 at

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1103915/

There you will have to scroll to about midway through it...., but look for the photos of pots I am holding up on a blue background. All the photos with those containers that I am talking about were the plants that I put in that basket and a couple others and that cost me 25c each at my local hardware this spring! Names included....!

The basket as of yesterday was doing awesome and I dare say I did get my moneys worth and then some. I am hoping I might be able to propagate most of them as the baskets get a bit more fuller and dare I start snipping at them! Or hopefully overwinter the basket in the house. Well its a thought anyway. I will have to take a new pic of it for you.

Hopefully my events of this week will not kill it as I might not be able to water it and the heat is on.

Thanks for asking!

I was surprised at how much I like this dark combo.

Gordon your flat pesto idea is genius! I'm all about easy, and when we cook, it's often pasta or fish. I used to put pesto in old timey plastic ice cube trays and I'd dump them out as needed, but your way would thaw so much better, thanks.
This yummy little plant was given my by a friend out of their garden, The frog and I ponder what it is.

Hi syl...we're back from the lake! Can I play too? DGS's little camouflage Crocs on the fence.....

bbubbles, hope you got to relax and didn't work too much at the lake.
The salvia you gave me perked right up in the ground, glad I didn't pinch it down.
The brug threw two huge blooms and is massing up leaves so I'll see what's next....that's the fun of it all.
I picked up some cute little pots to drill at Goodwill, see my Drilling Pots for Dummies thread.
All the coleus I bought with you are doing well, as are the begonias.
hugs :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Good to hear! I took some salvias to the lake to plant....probably deer food by now. We had a great time, came home sunburned, tho. This rain has been great! I think it was the first time I've not squirmed by the second day to go home so I could water pots!
The rain has made Rock Rose and asst. salvias creep back up in the crushed glass in front of my courtyard wall. Going to have to dig 'em out. My big pots are starting to lean...

Gordon- I want to win a get-a-way weekend on your roof top! I'm upstate in utica near syracuse so i'm not that far! =)

Love all the different pots! How much would you pay for a pot?

--DH and I had "words" the other day.... do you really NEED another pot?

jm

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

IN a word...YES! hehehe!

Keep them coming everyone! They are so neat!

Um, hello stray sunflower in my strawberry pot!

Well... Jane Marie.. That sounds like fun... it's great sleeping weather up there in the evenings.. you just wake up so early up there.. with the sun and birds..
WELL .. I do make all of the containers.. out of treated wood... cedar or redwood...and more recently out of 1 1/2 " or 2 " foam.. with an acrylic stucco finish... great for weight and insulation.. I do buy the smaller ones.. the plastic I have ..some are ancient.. so a $40 pot in 10 years cost $4 a year... and it's still working just fine... and sometimes has a moss patina.. increasing it's value.. [ to me anyway ] clay pots will also last forever if they are taken care of... and the nurseries always give you a pot with everything you buy.. so these I reuse.. store .. or throw away.. folks here throw out dead plants in their pots... so there's some from there... and reusing other objects
and items... for potting gives me some more...

the pots are the start though.. soil..
plants... fertilizers and something to kill the pests.... additives and blooming potions... and the increased time and effort you'll have to spend to care for this pot.. is always greater than the price of a pot.. the pots are cheap although it surely does add up enmass.. I am somewhat reeled in myself.. by the lack of space and weight of bigger pots.. as every addict knows... it's scarcely the price of the item.. but the expected joy that has us buying more.. and you don't sound like a pot a holic...
