Containers 2010 - WHose IN! - part 2
I have been trying to get a PIG pot too....there isone at the farmers stand that I frequent and they wont sell it. Dang!
I'm a pot freak too and a foodie....3 threads tonight have featured food and even though I've eaten, they look yummy. One even mentioned "comfort plants". Here one might suggest "comfort pots".
Gordon from Brooklyn, really, and you say all y'all...where you from, 'riginally?
Blossom, I saw some heart shaped Hoyas at a nursery near here.
I don't have a pig but a friend gave me this little cow.
I'm apt to plant anything with a depression in it. I'm now drilling small pots from Goodwill. I've become a wild woman with my new drill and bits and hole cutters. See my thread Drilling Pots for Dummies", acknowledging that I'm the dummie. I got lots of help.
Well...Sylvia.. I was born a delta boy.. but moved with the family early... I've been back south since... I built mother a house in AL mybe 30 years ago.. while I was down there as a single parent and then spent some time in the gulf building.. all the family were from MS.. ancestors as family history has it... were in Jackson.. when it was a few shacks on the Pearl river.. but moved back east some where the indians and panthers wern't so bad.. then it opened up some.. my grandfather was the first to plow his delta land when they got the levy working.. I was born there.. but I'm a temporary Texan.. right Sandi... I love the way your Crocks are Hanging..
I like NYC in lots of ways.. but untill recently noone grew anything.. now it's kind of a tull tilt
obsession.. like only money can provide for... I was making plant art here 40+ years ago
... and would have starved many times over... awaiting the curve to catch up.. someone had to awaken it I guess
my accent comes from the family and the TV...

My late husband was from Oxford, Miss. a bunch of French Heugenots. many doctors , engineers, and mathematicians. When the med school moved from there to Jackson, they renamed the one at Ole' Miss, Guyton Hall and it's now the ROTC bldg.
I met him in Tx.
I was born in the really deep south, Lima, Peru...but we came to TX when I was 3 and I only went back in 91 and 96 with my present husband. The flowers there are phenominal, the city a little like San Francisco, no rain, just water from the mountains.
One of my cousins home.....back at you.
I guess i have alot to learn! 2nd year garndner here! I want it all!!!! It takes time to build...
-but i'm sill up for fondue tho...=)
Well Gordon, I had to think about the "temporary Texan' for a few minutes! Forgot about the bumper sticker. Sounds like there's a mess of Missisppians here. I grew up in Biloxi. Both sides of our family were in politics. My dad's uncle was chief of police when I was growing up. (His cousin was Sheriff of Harrison County) My mother's uncle was city commissioner. The overpass connecting Hwy 90 to I10 is named for him. I have a cousin who's a State Representative....and another cousin who was a former one.
Our 45th high school reunion is in October. Don't know if we'll make it or not. Too much going on here.
bigbubbles, love that dramatic shot! it's very interesting the far and near corners of the earth that make up DG, and all the asides as well as the really helpful information. i have learned a lot in a short time due to kind contributors. containers are my big thing because here digging a hole requires an act of congress, and amending would take the rest of my lifetime!
todays containers

Sylvia....the large red pot has a smaller pot in it. I can remove the inner pot and change it out with the seasons. I'm still battling spider mites on nearly all my brugs. They look scraggly, but still blooming.... Stay cool////
I want the wagon!!! That is sooo cute. Do post it on the Redneck Gardening thread too! Its awesome!
Loving some of my containers - or at least it's loving the summer here! had too much junk around it so had to remove the mat, potting soil etc. to get a clearer pict of it - got the El Brighto coleus as a little thing from Rosy Dawn - have to say I really like it! It loves the sun

I'm hoping it does the trick.. avid.. and my cocktail of sevenn e.. malathion.. bug b gone.. and some other poisions need some help..
my old night blooming cereus.. is getting into form.. I had 4 blooms open last night.. and two to open tonight...
Ultimateshopper! your combos are wonderful.I love Elbrighto with the petunia.
GordonHawk your plants continue to be great
well.. thanks.. here's another picture of it .. for the folks unfamilar with the flower... you couldn't see it clearly with the flash... here it is just before wilting in the mornings light ..
the night blooming cereus was an american standard house plant ... through out Appalachia and down into the south.. It's easy to root and transport cuttings by waggon as migration moved south and west... there would be parties celebrating.. awaiting the night opening.. as the flowers were seeming to open.. I got my first one as a family legacy from my Aunt Velma.. and we grew them up together ... but both of us lost ours with in a year of each other ... this one is the one Logees has ..which I got as a replacment... but when she saw it bloom.. she said it was different from ours... so I set about to get out old family NBC... I got one from the hills outside Nashville... from peekaboo.. surely the one... and one from the gulf coast..from Kathy... suposedly from a New Orleans plant... that grew to be 6' across.. and one from the west coast... these have yet to bloom out for me.. and unfortunately Velma died before she could tell me if these are like our lost family heirloom
Great memories, Gordon. I love a plant with a "history." Lots of mine, I can point to and know exactly who if came from and when. My NBC blooms in Sept. Not sure if it's like the 'old South' one, but here it is. I also have a day blooming one that has red flowers. It bloomed in May. 'Smaller flower, tho.
(Oh, and it's in a container, so to keep with the thread)!
My GF got up to "stop photograpr" the cerus blooming. It's secent went all over the house.
heny, loooove the wagon, I'm here in Va. with my DIL, who said the homeowners assoc here would freak...that's why I love my very private 5 acres, a stones throw from sub-divisions, I can plant in anything, and have..
big bubbles, I've double potted as well, because the soil area was out of proportion with the plant.
I love the way Tom-Tom clusters pyramids of little pots that looks like one big arrangement.
Ahoy! Redneck gardeners click here for more!!!!

WARNING: Content of thread there will make ya laugh so bring yer Depends! LOL!
It is on my mom's back deck....the front of her yard looks nice and acceptable. She has a HOA too.
Hi, everyone! I just popped in to see if anyone has experience using metal coffee cans for planters. If so, is there some way to treat them (paint?) to keep them from rusting? Thanks!
Rust primer then paint? drill holes on bottom ...just a thought!
Yes.. whatever priming you do .. should be done inside.. also..... much easier to get a plastic jug or recycled item of plastic to work better than coffee cans..
That's what I thought--it'd be a lot of work. Thanks!
very nice!!!
Oooo, I like the dark ones...heck, I like 'em all!
Thanks. Jo Ann will be able to tell you which one it is. But I just love it. She gave me three starts.
Hi I am home from Maine
The coleus is Mahogany Giant and they arent kidding.
The Mahogony Giant is killer, I'll be looking for some.
I just got back from a 2 week vacation and we had rains here. A big colorful pot I had in the middle of the deck in my raised surround had a Copper Plant that was about 14" when I left and is now about 3' tall and will need moving as it's obscuring the view of other things blooming out back...I'll take a pic tomorrow, the pot is Talavera and there's Sweet potato vine (lime) and a Penta that's overshadowed by the other two. Sometime things don't stay in balance, but that's the fun of it.
It seems when we look at our gardens daily they seem to creep along. Mine are filled in and the 10 foot cosmose has grown a lot.
I guess I'll have to start working on Jo to start me another one for next year. I really like the Mahogany Giant, and would love to have the same one over again.
I must have some iris you like, Jo.
We can definatly talk Polly.
My garden just went crazy while I was in Maine. DD said there was severe storms and 3 days of rain.
