This is some of the stone I have collected for a retaining wall behind this bed.
Garden Projects 2
Tomorrow will be the big veggy plant day - i have installed a large garden umbrella for my FIL who had the open heart surgery to sit under and "supervise". He is Italian and 80, made me think of the God Father when i was setting it up:)

Hey, watch those Italian jokes!
You ROCK wha ^_^ Thanks for starting a new thread. Are you planting out/seeding veggies? Inquiring minds need to know all the details of 'Veggie Plant Day'. How are those artichokes doin? (she says, with extreme artichoke envy after she fried the artichokes in the greenhouse) Also are herbs involved?
dnut everything goes in except for the cantelope which goes in late june according to pixie rules.
i forgot to bring the pots in that i had the artichokes in so i will try again
Define 'everything'.
What are planting, Bill? Tomatoes, of course, but what else?
seeds and anything i started inside and has been out in the cold frame - t's, peppers, basil, eggplant.
i will have to let you know tomorrow when we are done - we wing it a bit depending on how much room is left
Italian garden!
mmmm italian food mmmmm
Ha!!! that's funny, it is an Italian garden.
Received my new moss window boxes today. Next week will be busy. Annuals, veggies, finishing off my shrubs/perennials and get started on the pool.
Wha, nice pile! We should be finished with the veggie planting tomorrow. I forgot about my artichoke which I did winter over in the greenhouse. It looked better a couple of months ago. I just hope we don't get that tomato blight again this year. Patti
Wha - your rocks look like they're advancing - sort of like a rock triathalon!
I think Pepperell, MA is sinking. Patti
lol!
if only they possessed the ability to stack themselves where designated...
Hey, I work with handicapped adults, so I understood Bill, too. LOL!
Ooooooohhhhh!!!! I'm turning green here, Bill! Could you build me a wall next? Bill, my Dad is 80, but not Italian. He doesn't like to sit and supervise. He likes to help. He's rather limited, though, but he likes to feel like he's contributing.
Katye, I'd love it if rocks could stack themselves!
Karen
garden is in - 48 t-plants, big mama roma's, brandywine hybrid ,oregon star, burpee health kick hybrid - three different peppers, bell, jalapeno, relleno, 100 leeks (no tough till late September's), carrots, basil, 10 eggplant, 4 different squash, cukes, romaine lettuce, swiss chard.
oh and i did 6 feet of rock wall.
Wha, So you worked only half of the day?
I got almost nothing done, as I think I must have had a mild concussion yesterday. I was having trouble with balance and had a headache so DH made me go lay down after I had spent a couple of hours moving plants. I promptly fell asleep for a couple of hours. DH finished moving a mess of Narcissus and Iris as well as tons of sweet ferns. Not the best time, but it had to be done. Here is the obvious problem. All the timber walls have to be replaced. We are clearing a big swath so they can move all the dirt out with an small excavator. The big plants get moved tomorrow. Patti
No tough???
That looks like a big job, Patti. Does wood have to be frequently replaced?
Well, I pretty much finished my hypertufa wall today and I love how it turned out! It really ties the two beds in front of together. Before the wall was there, it was just weeds back along the fence. I can't believe I didn't have this idea a long time ago. I think I will try using purple Torenia in the planters and hope that they'll get enough sun. If not, I may just switch to impatiens.
The hosta from left to right are Guardian Angel, Flemish Sky, Blue Hawaii, Stained Glass, and Cutting Edge. I *think* I gave everything enough room to grow.
Looks great Colleen!
Big project, Patti! Don't you hate it when stuff like that needs replacing? Why can't they make them so they last forever? Rock walls, now that's the way to go.
That hypertufa wall looks great! There you go, something that will last darn near forever!
I got some veggies planted today. I put in red leaf lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. I put up some netting for my peas to climb. I did some weeding, edged some beds, then mulched. That was it for today. Tomorrow I'll be watering potted stuff, spraying for lily beetles and caterpillars, and probably more mulching and weeding. Oh, and I have more stuff to plant, too.
Karen
patti that is a big project - i will have the same issue on my front steps a few years down the line.
and you are right - half day here:)
Wha, NO WAY...I was joking. It seemed like a few days worth of work.
The timbers were put down in in 1982. Stone would be wonderful, but beyond our budget. Patti
mine too.
mmmmmm wha is going to have lots of leek soup again this year mmmmmm leek soup mmmmmm. Patti you are SO right on! http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,935930,00.html
If I could find stones on Island not being used, that would be wonderful, but unlikely. The shipping charges to get even free rocks to the island is now beyond anything that I would be able or willing to pay. So it will be timber.
We moved a ton of stuff again today. 20 clumps of DL's, more sweet fern, a bunch of Hypericum, some inkberry and Ilex crenata so I had to dig some bed extensions to house the kids. Less grass, more beds. Yippee. The excavator guys tore out the old rotten walls and removed a huge amount of dirt. I am rethinking the layout and my make a big change with the stairs being moved and the walls also reconfigured. Change is good. I can see a couple of more Japanese Maples in the new configuration. DH is rolling his eyes, but I think he sees my vision.
Here is a collage of some of the action today. He first took out the top section and then moved down to the lower stone terrace to remove all those walls. He had the touch. I couldn't believe he could get it down there. It would have taken us a week to do what he did with one guy in 6 hours. Patti
wow lots of work done there patti!
WOWSER humungous project Patti!
Giant pain and an expense we didn't want. But we knew it would happen someday. Patti
Wow - more big stuff going on there, Patti!
Thanks Karen and Christina! I spent part of the day cramming moss in the crevices of the wall. Hopefully it will spread eventually.
Ya Patti but think about how prettiful it will look when it's all spanky new ^_^ I thought I would have a nervous breakdown when we had to replace the log cabin garden shed roof cuz a clematis ate it. I like a mix in hardscaping so I will always keep some wood things even though they have a relatively short life.
edit: Your wall looks TOTALLY FABBY Noreaster. I was thinking it but forgot to typify it.

Noreaster, wonderful hypertufa wall and planting. I meant to comment on it earlier. Love the collection of hosta. Patti
Wow, any project that requires the same equipment used to build highways is impressive! And I though putting down loose bluestones was a project.....nice work!
M.
Nice. Looks like a playground!
