Good for him....keeps him young, no doubt. Hope everything goes well, Ric. Don't know what the plant is....maybe Louise would know.
Garden Projects 2
Glad to hear your Dad is doing well, Ric. Your taming of the jungle is quite a job.
Wha, your walls are awesome, as usual. I love how the foundation stones anchor the wall by the drive.
Colleen, your hypertufa blocks are wondrous!
Thank you Jan!
Is anyone else just wiped out? It's barely June and I feel like I don't have any energy left for anything. The weeds are growing well, like weeds, and I'm feeling overwhelmed even by that. I want to get a bunch of newspaper or cardboard and lay it down in the weed infested back right corner of my yard and cover it with some kind of mulch so that my dog has a nice little potty area. I wouldn't be surprised if he got his eye injury from some kind of thorny weed back there. (Hate those raspberries!) I need a bunch of mulch for various areas, but I get tired even thinking about hauling that around....or weeding first!
Ugh my backyard needs a overhaul.
Too hot out there to weed.
AMEN, sister!!
Just found thie thread.
WOW Bill.Your stones in the first pic are almost sculptural. There is an"instalation "artist who built a wall on the grounds of the Rockefeller estate.Either Kaiakuck(sp) or KingMountain( not sure about this name). Its fantastic.
Kykuit.
Same here, Jen. Way too hot and humid and I have LOTS to do. Still have many plants to plant and the weeds are going crazy.
I absolutely can't stand weeding when it's muggy because it brings out all the mosquitos. If I can't have a dry, breezy day, I'd rather weed in the pouring rain.
no weeds here:) well i have found a few that grew since i did the big weed last week - why can't plants i want to keep grow like that? will plant today and get started on expanding the bed behind the new wall - not sure if i have enough dirt so will do as much as i can.
hot+humid=weight loss
Just water loss, nothing else.
not if you are working
The working part is fine, but there is no extra fat loss because of heat and humidity. People often make that mistake and exercise in plastic outfits. Crazy and dangerous.
Seems we have hit the july and aug. muggy stuff early here too. Glad we had an early spring to get stuff done, cause I too poop out when the muggies are around. Next week we are supposed to have cooler drier weather for at least a few days. I have a side slope that is so overgrown with weeds and grass that I have wanted to get at for two seasons now. Always more fun things to do first so once again that is still on the to do list. Maybe I will start it if the weather does cool a bit, but I am out of mulch and energy at present.
I got hot and muggy for you, Yesterday hit 90's with showers, you could steam coming off of the paved surfaces. From the Sunshine state, where weeds grow 12 months a year! Ric
Well it's expected down there...up here? this early? Not so much
Planting out and planting out and planting out YIPPEE!!! It's mucky but true luv doesn't call me pigpen for nothin ^_^
Yes, that's the norm there, Ric. We are 15 degrees above normal!
It got nice out so I took the afternoon off to work on weeding the grass out of my moss path. It's my goal in life to eradicate the grass from the moss. Some people would want it the other way around, but not me!
Grass is one of my biggest 'weed' problems too.
You are right Victor, It is the norm here just not the norm for us. LOL
I was out this morning for a while with the loppers turning Ric's big branch piles into smaller neater piles that can be put out with the trash. Really reducing the jungle down to a manageable pile about 8ft long 3ft wide and 3/4ft high. Such ashame Poppy use to have some nice flower beds back along this fence but over the years he has given them up as he just couldn't keep after them anymore. Our aim is to just make things neater and easier to maintain. I would just love to head over to HD or one of the nurseries to pick up some nice plants to add to the yard, but I don't think that will be the best thing to do right now. Holly
Awww look at the doggie!
Good-looking dog!
That is Zeus, Poppy & Michael's dog. He is a German Shepard/Wolf mix about 6yrs. He is a huge sweetie, just as gentle as can be. His hips are horrible though and with his size I don't know how long he will be mobile. He is a real mess too sheds constantly and when he comes inside from laying in the yard he brings in a ton of sandy dirt in his coat. That is one of the things Michael is really good about. He brushes him and vac's the house at least every other day. Their house isn't real big and he takes up a lot of floor space. He is just such a sweet dog though that all the other stuff doesn't matter that much.
Zeus is a handsome boy! I have been running around today, walking the dogs, & painting....I have to go to a retirement dinner tonight, I'm hot, have a headache, & don't want to do anything....oh, yes, I should be weeding & planting, too!
That's a great shot, Ric!
Decided not to go to dinner....feeling better, so I'm out to plant the white geraniums that arrived today.
worked like a convict on a chain gang today - planted all the marigolds and impatiens, hosta's from coop's, grasses i bought last fall, and planted the taiyo nishiki in the ground - that was the morning not too bad.
in the afternoon i decided to lift and stack all the grass around the bed behind the new wall - then went at it with the rototiller and flopped the grass upside down on the steep parts - that was done in full sun and i went through three shirts and was dripping.
tomorrow is a garden tour through concord, MA - when we get back i will fill in the rest of the bed with what dirt i have and start planting - think it will look good.
Wha, great day when you go through changes of clothes. Congrats. Is that the garden tour you went on last year and found that great variegated tree.
Robindog, hope you stay feeling better. Patti
Noreaster, I'm with you, all tired out already! Overwelmed and not getting enough sleep. I have 3 days off a week. I pull marathon gardening sessions, then back to work for 4 days, then back in the gardens. Hard to keep up. I'm always tired during work. I need a break already. Good thing I love gardening or I would have quite a long time ago!!!!! Oh, I have a goal of eradicating the grass from the moss at my place, too. I love the moss so much. I only have it in certain parts of the yard, and I encourage it. Oh, and I happen to love clover, too, so no weed killers on my lawn.
Yup, Ric, FL is too hot and muggy for me in the summer. They can have it!! That pic looks real hot and muggy. Cute Zeus!
Have fun on your garden tour, Bill!
Tomorrow is my plant sale at my house. Wish me luck!
Karen
Hope it went well today for you, Karen, at your sale.
Thanks, Patti....I am feeling better today...think it was having eyes dilated, glare of sun, & painting in this humid weather! Hope the plant sale went well, Karen.
the garden tour was only ok - not as good as last year's - got home and finished bringing dirt into the new enlarged bed - wished there was more dirt for it - planted it out and watered - tomorrow the mulch - when i was down it looked like i stood in front of a sprinkler all day - very humid today -will post a couple pic's after it is mulched.
Hope your sale went well Cousin Nut. OT but is there another luvly DL like Raspberry Pixie with little flowers that is hardy to zone 3? I would like another one to put in my tiny flowers bed.
My sale went okay, but didn't make a lot of money. I had fun, though, and met some nice folks. My 2 friends who did the sale with me made more money than I did.
Cousin Nut, what kind of DL are you looking for specifically? Do you want a mini like RP? Do you want a similar color?
Bill, waiting for pics. Very humid here, too. Can't stand it!
Karen
I'm trying to get new soffits and fascia up on the back of my Dad's house and it's like 90*F and 180 proof humidity. I don't have a clue as to how the guys down here do heavy work in this heat, they must become acclimated to it. I get so wet, I look like I walked out of a car wash.LOL
Stopped by a near by house and the lady of the house gave us the nickle tour of her tropical gardens. They moved here from Erie some 20 years ago and turned their Bermuda grass into a paradise. Ric
Looking forward to pics Bill. It was way to hot and humid for me to do much but a tiny bit of weeding and a little deadheading and there you are shoveling dirt and planting. Don't know how you do all that you do.
D-nut your tomatoes are looking good and your steps are decorated until things are planted and don't let anyone say any different. ^_^
Ric what a nice garden. The humidity down there must be so oppressive. It is bad enough up here the last few days.
Ric, that is such an oddity, the tropics come to Pa, but way cool to fulfill a dream. There is a guy in Belmont Ma who has a yard full of banana trees.
dahlianut, tell me more about your tomato house. Looks very spiffy. Do you grow them all summer in that hot house?
Nutsfordaylily, Do you continue to sell plants all summer? I hope your friends gave you goodies for using your space. Nice that you had nice folks come by.
I managed on working outside at a very slow pace from 8 until 1. Now back in my PJ's. I planted most of my Bluestone sale order and did a fair bit of deadheading and weeding. I pulled up more Iris pseudacorus, a whole garbage can full. I have only one patch left, until next year. Some will return, but I had 4 times more last year. Slowly going away, for good.
Here is a collage of the work on the rebuilding the walls and stairs. I am having the stairs moved away from the house. Patti
Quite a project, Patti...wise to move the steps...safer. Glad you got out to work....stay well. Bill & Karen, sorry your days weren't better...humid here, too. That was some garden, Bill, but I'm glad I'm not in FL this time of year.
