What have you ordered 2010 #7

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Kathleen. I agree with Bill. Are you looking for a certain leaf shape, overall shape, color, fall color?? Your zone should be fine for most.

Vincent. ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

sorry about the toms onewish:( Speaking of cameras, I'm signed up for a course to learn how to use my fancydancy camera. But the real news is that these followed me home from the Rose Society Mini-Rose Sale today:

Red Riding Hood
Sweet Fairy (very stinky ^_^)
Carmel Kisses
Roller Coaster (climber)
Lavender Crystal
Party Lights

Thomaston, CT

Would love to see the photos....hurry up with those lessons!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i love carmel kisses:)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

RD the course is a whole day AND at the end there is a photo contest. I will SO win if there are garden hoses anywhere about. I just get so overwhelmed when I try to figure it all out for myself with the tome which is why I don't use that camera so YIPPEE a course for Beginners and you don't have to be techie (I called to be sure).

South Hamilton, MA

Rain blasted the 2 dahlia flowers at the tip of the plant. they had probably been in bloom for awhile anyway. Plenty of buds to come. I ned a nearby computer course like your camera one. A bit :of 4 hrs of lessons at the public library was a start, but certainly I need more.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Dahlias do h*a*i*l irisMA so I think they will rally from your storm. Pinch off any soggy/damaged buds so they don't waste energy on them. Did I mention that my irisii divisions/transplants are looking pretty fabby? ^_^ They lost all their original foliage but they are bursting up anew ^_^ I don't think they will flower this year cuz they just little but WHOO HOO I didn't kill them ^_^

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Victor and bill, I've looked through jm catalogs in the past and can't remember a single name at this point. Leaf shape is important, as I use leaves in my fabric painting, and autumn color is nice, but they all have nice color, no?

edit:
They also need to be particularly hardy. USDA may say we're zone 5, but at 1800 feet, we're used to between 200 and 300 inches of snow every year, and dip into zone 4 temps some years.

I just ordered Geranium Samobor and a
Kirengeshoma from Lazy SS

Thomaston, CT

Nice art work, Kathleen! Yes, our zone is 5, but I'm at the top of a windy hill, so I need a hardy JM . Kasagyama lived in my garage this winter, but is now planted & looks great....it's a dwarf variety. Dnut, good luck with the contest!

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks. That one shows most of the ways I use leaves, as a "resist", as a "stamp", as inspiration.

I am particularly taken with the Acer shirasawanum aureum and its full leaves. But, I know there are a lot of them to look at.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I thought of Victor as this one jumped on the cart, Cryptomeria 'Sekkan Sugi"

Very pretty conifer!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great choice, Weeze - I have two!

That is a nice one, Kathleen. Didn't realize you were at altitude. I suggest you contact any of the three sources Bill and I mentioned - Davidsan's, Topiary Gardens and Wildwood Nursery - and see what they suggest for your conditions.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks Robin. Victor, do you give them any winter protection?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

One I just planted. The other, which I planted last year, did not get any protection and made it through the winter fine.

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Victor (thank Vincent for me, ok?), I'll check those nurseries out.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

We just returned from a couple of nurseries. Bay State and Walker's Farm. Both good. Bought some very choice woodland plants, a nice Japanese Maple Peaches and Cream to replace one that I killed, and lots of veggie starts plus a bunch of perennials. They are all tucked into the truck for the trip back to the island tomorrow. I will post a full report of my greed when I get home. I did pass on a gorgeous Acer Shirazz as it was big and pricey. I was nearly tempted, but thought that it would double the amount I wanted to spend today, so I didn't buy it. Painful leaving it behind. I will go look at Wha's. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti i will post a picture of it tomorrow - you should check out davidsans one gallon shirazz - the one i got is not bad in comparison to the $$$ one bought. and nice choice on p&c - no orange dream?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, You should be selling used cars......no Orange Dream, yet or Shirazz. I am trying to avoid another addiction. Patti

This is a great list for bloom time as related to the Arnold Arboretum, but they tell you how to adjust it for other NE locations. Plus it is a great list of plants to covet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm still not quite sold on Shirazz. Lots of very nice variegated ones out there.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I was sold, except for the price. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that was what i paid for mine patti - best jm in the yard in spring.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Love the "Cryptomeria 'Sekkan Sugi" Weeze. I would like it in a miniature, I wonder if they have that???

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

See me jumping up and down shouting, OOOHHHH, I like that.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's high praise, Bill. Really??? Better than Corallinum? Katsura?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sekkan Sugi grows slowly and you have SO much room anyway, Jen!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes better than both of them - not really crazy about corallinum, looks ok in the spring then not so much - katsura is better than corallinum in the spring (although my wife did not like the color) and looks ok the rest of the year too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Corallinum is fantastic in the spring. Decent the rest of the year. Can't remember fall color. I love Katsura in spring. Really like Bonfire. Many others too. Sometimes Shirazz looks nice to me, other times it doesn't. I like the wine though.

Thomaston, CT

I ordered some irises today...only 5, I'm being good. Will check out some sites for JMs.

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Maybe I should just send you guys old phone books (don't worry, around here they are only about 3/4 of an inch thick) and have you fill them up with leaves come fall!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Bill/Victor, what are the shipping charges like from Davidsans?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Quote from victorgardener :
Yes - best are saved for last. Mine are coming by private, climate-controlled trucking. No mass-shipping for me.

Sounds expensive. I think the police escort was extra too.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it depends on size of tree - they are in line with other on line places

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - not bad.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jen if you do not want a huge tree then topiary gardens is pretty inexpensive as she ships us mail verse fed-ex. although i have learnt tg has larger trees - i might be ordering a 5 gallon from her in the next couple of days.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wildwood is very reasonable with shipping and Sara is a doll who will help you pick a tree.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yup - wildwood is great on shipping too - need to look at the overall cost of tree/shipping and what size of a tree - for $/size davidsans can not beat imho.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would probably agree, though I have gotten some nice sized ones from WW.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

me too and with topiary on a couple occasions - for consistent large trees davidsans is the place though
