System Issues (Part III)

Marlton, NJ

Pages and pictures taking a long time to load, first in the Bird Watching forum and over here right now.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I called the network ops center a little after 10 (CDT) last night when the site wouldn't load. I had been in contact with Talia an hour or two before that, and I knew they were having some problems with the IB network, but at that time it wasn't affecting DG, so I'm not sure if our outage was related to that or not.

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I have been getting this until just now.

Database error: connect to host davesgardendbhost1 failed
MySQL Error: ()

Session halted.

First of all ... I'm not complaining when I come over to tell you what's going on. Just letting you know in case the info can be helpful. :-)

I couldn't get on between 11-and 12 p.m. last night. Finally gave up and went to bed. I made a couple of posts on the prayer thread, not sure of the exact times, but then it came up and said "page not found" a couple of times so just went to bed.

DG has been very slow for me, also. I'm not giving up on it yet but sure hope they get the answers ironed out. So far this is still the easiest site to navigate.

Marlton, NJ

I'm not having any problems so far today.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Terry,

In your response to Janet you said that others were not having that problem. Just to clarify, I do have the problem she noted as "...this thread took 45 seconds to load...". I see that particular problem frequently. It varies. Sometimes things come up instantly just as they did in the 'old days'. Other times, but frequently enough to be quite annoying, pages take close to a minute to load. I find myself waiting far too long for pages to load much of the time.

Then there are other times, as mentioned, when pages update instantly. Things vacillate between fast and slow so much throughout the day that it would take a lot of record keeping to report them all. It has been fast for me so far this morning, BTW. Still, when it get in the slow mood, it can be frustrating.

I, too, have high speed, BTW. I'm on a Mac. I don't have problems with things like spyware that slow the computer down, nor am I running all of the anti-spyware stuff that can also slow windows compters. I never had the problem before IB moved the software. Also I don't have problems with other sites.

Marlton, NJ

I'm the same. High Speed- Mac.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I do understand the sporadic page-load speeds of various threads.

But the problem of photos not opening (either timing out or coming up with a white screen) seems to be pretty isolated, unless others are also encountering it. If you are please tell us and if possible, tell us which images.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

I don't recall having any problems recently with photos, either opening them to view or uploading them. Sometimes they do take a while to open or upload, similar to the problem of opening threads. Two things come to mind here:

(1) when trying to upload a HUGE photo file, I have had the system timeout, but that was happening in the 'old days'. Usually the system will downsize the overly large photo, but sometimes it times out while trying to do this. Again, that is not new. I saw that many times pre-IB.

(2) I believe different ISP's have different timeout times. It's possible that one person may get a timeout when others just see a prolonged wait, this due to the difference in their providers.

If I do see such a problem, I will make sure to take note of the information and post it.

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I have had similar problems with photos but can't remember which specific ones. I usually view in Southwest. I will click on the photo, sometimes it opens, sometimes it waits and sometimes I just see the white box. If I reload, it usually comes up. I have satellite and it can be a little flaky so was blaming that. I will try to post a specific issue.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I get the 'session halted' error at least once per day. Often, a few times.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Victor, is it when you're loading a thread, or trying to open a photo, or something else?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Usually when posting. Sometimes just when opening a thread.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi All,

For those of you who I have not yet met, Hello! My name is Talia, I work with IB and DG to make and communicate new features and to enhance existing features to be more useful for you.

I'd like to first say thanks for your ample feedback on slowness in page loading, processing, and timeouts on the site. We've been investigating this issue recently - so I wanted to poke my head in and let you know that we are working on a solution for this.

For us, it entails a little bit of restructuring on the back end. Some of the pipes are a little cluttered, so we are working to clean them out. This won't effect your existing posts, or anything else for that matter, it will just mean you can use DG more effectively because it will be faster (it might also mean one or two less headaches!).

Please continue to let us know when you experience issues and I will relay them with Terry and Melody, to our tech team so we can work on a solution.

Thanks!

Best,
Talia

I received the session halted message for the first time today. I think it was my own fault, however, as when I tried to go from a full sized picture back to the thread and it didn't seem to go, I clicked the back button a second time. I think I confused it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Last time someone said they were going to clean out my back end because of cluttered pipes, I cringed. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Just got 'Taking too long to connect' error for about ten minutes.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Me too.
(you crack me up Victor!)

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I tried several times today to open photos and wouldn't you know it, they all worked like a charm. I will take a screen shot though the next time it happens.

Thanks Talia for your response and thanks also to the tech team that is working diligently to get Dave's Garden back to being the brilliant site it has always been.

From 7 pm to 7:30 pm tonight, I could not even visit the DG site. Server access not available. All other sites I visited worked as normal at that time except DG !!?!

Any and all rotorootering will be appreciated by me as my time to visit here is limited. Aggravating when the DG down time is my on time.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

podster, the ISP had outages both last night and tonight, and all the IB sites were down each night Your pain is shared by lots and lots of us.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you. I do appreciate your taking the time to explain.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I was worried too, so I went looking for an answer i could provide ;o)

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi,
I just got the "Database error" message that other members have seen while trying to log on. After several tries I was able to get to the site. This has happened on & off over the last few days.

Also, I have had intermittent slow downs (really, really slow) that cause me to log out from frustration.

I just got it repeatedly when trying to answer a helpdesk report. I kept clicking on send about 6 or 8 times, then tried clicking on the home tab 6 or 8 times, and finally got back in.

Now the pages are loading extremely slow again.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

I should mention, one of those "slowdowns" is going on right now & has been going on for about the last 20 minutes.

Marlton, NJ

I just now went from the Home Page to the Bird Identification Page and the page only comes up half built (top half), then a second or so later the rest of the page is there.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

keep getting this error message and then it works, then it doesn't

As I was going back Home from Iris forum I was directed to Cannot display web page. I tried 5 or 6 times. I signed out, signed in, same thing trying to connect with Home Page. Signed out again and finally got back in. Reported immediately after getting back on.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Was in a thread on the Cacti & Succulents forum, clicked on "Home," and got the following:

Don't know why the image didn't show up. I did a "Print Screen" and copied the info to a Word document, then posted the document using the "Browse" feature. Any ideas why this didn't work?

You can't post a word document - you'll need to save the screenshot (print screen) as a .jpg or .gif or .bmp file (a photo file) and then upload it.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks! Too late now, but I'll remember that for next time.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Any idea when these errors will be finally fixed??

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I thought I knew how to convert a "Print Screen" to a photo file, but I don't. (See above.) Can anyone tell me?

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I have an old computer with the "Paint" program, so I save it in "Paint", to 'My Pictures'.

There's some scheduled maintenance planned for tomorrow night. It will take care of the time stamp errors on photos and several other little pesky things Melody and I have worked with the tech team on over the past several weeks.

I'd like to tell you with 100% certainty that it will also stop the intermittent database errors, but we won't know for sure until the update is done.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I don't have the Paint program anymore.

faeden, does your computer have a pictures folder program? If so, right click one time on the image you wish to save and add it to there.
