Propagation: part XIV based on my own experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, remind me closer to June. That is 2 months away. Sounds good.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good mornin everyone:
Well I checked and the aphids are all gone BYE BYE...lol
Things have been jumping here as far as growth goes. over the weekend we could see my mom's blue angel grow from am to pm and overnight. It was kool. first it was the little breaks of the eye's formong the leaf and stem part then you could see a giant funnel like shaped lead then they were all the way out. Time lapse growth overnight.
Its planting time today. i need to get my north bed planted as well as a few hanging baskets and planters. It looks like I did not loose as many hosta's as I thought they were just a weeee bit slow. Minuteman finally sprung up and a few smaller ones.
Its funny how different plants will sprout according to the temperature and the amount of sun they recieve. I noticed my shade garden that is full sun untill the ash leafs out (I think its an ash).
I have been putting off the planting in the northbed to see who all really is dead and who's just a Johnny come lately that likes dormancy. several of the plants I thought I had lost have sprounted. My gut feeling was to leave them for a while before I declared them dead.
Thats about all for now. I wish everyone had the weather we are having today, so everyone can get outside and get your hands in the soil. No better mood lifter than that.

Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, maybe my hostas might have survived the dogs and just still asleep, is that what you are telling me Dave? It is still too cold to put anything out. However, I expect to get 20 helebores from the coop in the next week or so. I guess I will just pot them up altho I have some people interested in any excess that I can't use. So, will have to see what I get.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

That sounds great Jeanette. I don't exactly know why they do their odd ball stuff. I still have periennials poping up in pots I thought were goners. I just hate to give up on something I paid good money for. I started planting the north bed with perrienials. 4 kinds of spirea, 3 kinds of asters, some penstomon, scull something or other 3 or 4 different periennial salvia's and my favorite _ Centaurea montana mountain cornflower. I am sure there are other odds and ends I put in the mix.
the problem I am having is energy. I managed to run myself down already. Oh yea I am also putting my watering on timers. I have most of the nursery and the reised beds on one pair of ratchet heads. I am planning to do the 1/8" micro drip in the north bed.
I realize my bro in law was doing his best but he filled the bed all the way to the top and packed it in. so far on 20 plants I have removed 2 - 5 gallon buckets of new soil. I am thankful I have the space to dump it so it all works out.
who prefers which style of landscaping?
all the same plants in a group i.e. 3 of this and 4 of that and 3 of something else and so on.
staggering the planting with same plants in a row say in the back one echinacea, a spirea, forsythia, vibernum and then repeat the line all the way down?
I am curious who likes which one???
Its amazing how fast we run down on the ole stamena.
what color are the helliborus? got any pics? I know its the coop you sent me to but I forget so easily.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Oh Crap Dave I had all of the locations down here in a message for you and lost it. Will send you an email.

Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I feel bad discribing my progress so far on the garden. I put out tomatoes today. everything is growing well I guess I have no experience to guage it by. Anyone have a suggestion for a fertilizer? bone meal, blood meal? I am kind of green at using those products and as most of us do I temd to shy away from things I don't know about. I took the leap and bought a bag of bloodmeal to put down with my north bed planting.
well I am toddleing off to bed
nighty night ...of course if I cant sleep then I will be back ...oh no say it aint so ....
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, I don't think you want bloodmeal on your tomatoes. It is a nitrogen. You will get all leaves. Gardens Alive has a good organic tomato fertilizer. You might take a look and see what it has in it. I normally use a 20-20-20 but it is not organic if that is what you are after.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

mornin:
I guess I am after a solution that does not exsist. I just need tobreak out the hose injector and use the education rolling around in my head.
An injector is an aparatus that take a strong solution and mixes it with water while watering. The one I have fits the hose bib and wikk mix at a rate of 16 to one. Now that I have everyone on auto pilot it might be good to do that every week.
I have been relying on the fertilizer in the mix I buy which is fine for the first season but now we are into year 2 with a bunch of plants so its time to step it up with like a 100 - 200 parts per million solution.
I think my reluctence to use the injector is a fear of over doing it. too high a mix and poof there goes everyone all burnt up. its real easy to burn the plants.
Oh well i will let you know how it goes and what everyone looks like.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, don't poof your plants. Or burn them either. LOL

A weaker solution is best. Especially early in the season.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I was thinking 100ppm which is very week as I have used upto 600 and more for pushing plants but i am not pushing the little buggers. I just want to get some lush color and growth.
I get this way when I am kinda feeling off a bit. I tend to make dumb moves when I get in this mode so I am wanting to make baby steps so I don't kill everyone.
Oh yea... i spotted a maple leaf on a volunteer in one of my pots that has a redish color but also has cream miked in on it. its way kool. I will try to get a pic later today/tomorrow
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Your volenteer maple leaf sounds pretty cool Dave. What do you mean "has cream miked in on it?" Maybe a bird pooped on it. LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

LOL ... no its got creamand redish coloring its kind of hard to explain. and the pic does not show the full beauty of its diversity. I hope it remains on the tree because its special...yea I know the lil' yellow bus will be here shortly... anyway here it is

Well that is different isn't it. Very pretty.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I thought so...I just hope it keeps its color
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good morning to all:
Well its time to plant more flats of seeds...??? wouldn't that be sow???
I hope everyone's haveing a great day and the temperatures have finally turned for you. I hope the pollen decided to run away soon as its killin me. I noticed yeaterday that the oak have shed their reproductive parts. it looks like a hunny kind of moss or a bad hair day for someone. Its piled up along the driveway and the gutters in the roads. a golden fluffy mass.
I am looking forward to hostas arriving anytime now. I have mthe dirt ready to go and I have close to a full flat of new 1801's to put them in. I am always like a kid in the candy store when I get shipments of plants especially the hosta's.
I hope everyone has a great day
Dave

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Dave

I'm a kid in a candy store as well, cause I love getting packets that not only contain plants but pots, tools...LOL

Janet

ps we are having a 80 degree day but then tomorrow it turns back to 50 degrees and colder through the weekend. Why is it that mother nature can't give those of us who have to clock in somewhere other than our homes a break and let the weekend have all the great weather????

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

i agree I love getting boxes. I just got my hosta delivery... I am excited to get them into pots and listed on market place. here is a pic of the group

This spring has been like a bad boyfriend...or girlfriend as the case may be...LOL! ^_^

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, those really look neat. Are mine in that batch??? I am looking forward to getting them.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Nice Hostas you guys. I have one or two varieties. I never knew I could grow them until last year. I have an East shady area. My chance to grow from cuttings seems to be gone now, until Fall, I guess.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

hellin, Dave gets real nice plants. And he is super careful in shipping them. Anything he gets you can count on being good. I guess I was the only one that went in with him on the hostas.

I hope he remembers that 2 of those Frosted Mouse Ears that he is admiring so much, belong to me. LOL

Dave

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I so wished I had the money to go in with Dave, but with DH still out of work, I've got to pick between supplies to grow plants for sale and plants for my own yard right now...LOL

Frosted mouse ears.... who how cute are they going to be.... I just purchased mouse ears last year.

Ok so if I want to take cuttings I wait till all blooming is down, then I can take the cutting, Right?

We are having the best year for woodies blooming and one of the worse for allergy sufferers this year... including me... I have never seen so many beautiful budding trees and shrubs and I've got folks lined up that have said I could come take cuttings.... I'm so excited.

Janet

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Meadow, we have had a problem with the warm weather so early, the leaves came out before the buds on the Dogwood and it really spoiled the beauty of the flowers. This was not the best year for flowering trees here in NJ, at least not here on the farm. The darn weather hot and cold crap destroyed alot of good buds.

I am down 1/2 on the sale of daffodils this year. For some reason, and I am sure it is because of the weather, the yellow daffys came up first and people like yellow in their bunches, even if they get the best hybrids pinks and salmon, etc. and they are not buying them. So, we all are just sighing and hoping for a better year next year.

I am heartbroken because I bought a beautiful hosta from Dave last year and it was doing so well. It did not come up yet and I keep hoping it will, but I am afraid it is gone.
The other hosta around it are up and growing. Oh well. It was a beauty and so different.

The Iris are starting to bloom around the warm side of the barn, but not in the field. They are not even up to regular size yet. The stupid temperature keeps going up to 70 down to 30 up to 50 down to 30 then it rains and the wind chill is so cold even the cats are hiding. What is going on? At least we do not have a volcano erupting....counting my blessings and trying to think happy thoughts. Love you all. Hugs. JB

BTW, the business on MarketPlace has picked up. I had three orders in the past two few days. Yippee.

Everything I had lsited on eBay disappeared and I have to relist everything. Who knows what happened there. Business was just beginning to pick up again too.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Are you feeling better, now, Janet?

It sure does mess things up when you are in the midst of seed-starting to not be feeling well. I have lost a few things when I am in that mode, but better now.

I hope all is well with you now, and I do understand about allergies, as they can lead to infection without even a moment's notice.

Take care,

Evelyn

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

JB do not give up on the little guy I have had a lot of stuff I though was gone start popping up. this year is so strange. we went south to the north side of dallas and it just spit rain on the way home. its been raining here a lot and I had to close my greenhouse and cover my veggies, I am afraid we may get down into the 30's and I have tomatoes planted. as you know 6b's frost free date is the 15th of april. we are suposed to be done with this crap. Its got all the plantsscratching their lil' heads going no I don't wanna go out....
Janet: I cut blooms or not except for forsythia and azalea's but thats a bloom timing and weather thing. if you cut azalea's or foesythia b4 they bloom they wont for another year on the part you cut. I believe the plants root better also because of the growth push post flowering. what are you wanting to try?
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

oops ..here is the pic of the day. a chinese whisteria from last weekend at the lake

Thumbnail by Pughbear7
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, that is gorgeous.!!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Ooooowwwwwww, I love a Wisteria in bloom. My gosh, My little guy just leafed out in the last two weeks, I don't think I will have blooms again then. ho hum! Got any tricks for this tricky Wisteria Devil?

I will keep that in mind if I order plants, that Dave's are great. I am on a buying freeze at the moment, or my h will have a heart attack.

Do you sell on the market place?

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I thought so

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Yes I do also some ebay but its a bit more to post ads so I prefer market place. Its also nicer folks to deal with. most of the ebayer's expect a huge plant for 99 cents. It just does not work that way.
I have a whisteria I got in a trade 2 years ago. I put it in a hanging basket and irts starting to try to pop the pot off. I am thinking of doing cuttings on him as well. I just don't know if its the purple or not. most likely is but I have to be sure.
I will look up whisteria for you I think its a nutrient deficentcy that stops the blooms, just off the top of my head.
This guy bloomed last week. I believe he is blue dart
Dave

Thumbnail by Pughbear7
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

What is that Dave? You put a wisteria in a hanging pot? Is that what you said? I can't imagine that. I always heard that they didn't bloom until they were at least 5 years old. True??? or not??

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Kind of looks like one of my Bachelor Buttons from some other country.
I love the color. Any periwinkle color makes me feel calm and smirk.

I will keep that in mind Dave and check out your stuff. For me, I need to order things that need shipped in late Aug. now almost, unless it is really hardy, because it is hot here already, many of the days. I gardened since 9 till 2 today working on transplanting the last of my bottles from WS and then finishing most of the micro sprinkler system and I am fried to a crisp on my back.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

It would make sense because my old Wist. plant at my old house did bloom after it was there about 4 years and it was already a year old or 2 maybe. It only bloomed a couple of times but leafed out to cover a whole huge patio cover. This one is probably4 or 5 years old this year. I got it as a 5 gallon about 3 1/2 years ago.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

They are such gorgeous plants so it is a shame it takes so long to bloom. I don't have the patience.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

funny yall are talking about wisteria's as that is one that I want to do some cuttings on. A garden buddie is letting me take how every many cuttings I want as she is training hers into a tree and prunes it all the time, she never keeps them...LOL

So my question is where, what, part of the vine do I take the cutting from.... I've never done this before so I really don't have a clue as to where I would take it, unless it is like taking a clematis cutting?

Love the pic of the wisteria, just incredible.

Crab apples are another one that I would like to take cuttings on.

I just recently did some cuttings and I put the root ton on them, put then in the seed starting mix and then put them in a plastic bag. They seemed to be doing fine and I opened up the bag after a 4 days and now one of them the leaves are dying.... the other two have new growth so I feel like they have rooted. 2 others died but I knew when it came for my turn that the only thing left on the plant was not something that would root, but I tried anyway...LOL

sorry about the blurry, for some reason I can't get the camera to take a clear shot even if it is little away.

but you can see the two new leaves in the center and under some of the other leafs there is new growth...

Janet
