Propagation: part XIV based on my own experience

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I got them a week ago. I dug up some runners from my other strawberry planter to fill out the rest of the stacker.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

What is your other strawberry planter?

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

It was a wooden box that some parts came in when we had our shop built. It is about 10' long, 12" wide, but rather shallow. Nothing grew very well in it, except for weeds. So I am going to empty it out and get rid of it.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

How shallow is "rathr shallow" Strawberry roots don't go down very deep. It sounds very good for them, only a little narrow. The Tri Star don't grow many runners tho. I hope to get mine planted next week. Had to put them in the crisper in the fridge for a while. I might just use the Miracle Grow with the slow release and polymers for them, or mix my own stuff. I went to Walmart and went thru their slow release fertilizers today and found 8 llbs of 10-10-10 for $15. Might use that with compost, Watersorb, and potting mix. Don't know.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I think it is a made out of 1x4's. Maybe I should just empty it out and start with fresh potting mix and some coir and the watersorb crystals.

Happy Easter
I hope everyone has a great day. we had a nice ham and all the fixens. tasty..
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, Happy Easter to you all too.

What was planted in it before, Lynn? That sounds like a good mix. Empty it out and put all of that on your compost pile and then try that mix for your strawberries. Let me know if you think you are going to need more plants. When do you think you are going to plant it? I am going to plant my strawberries tomorrow, hopefully, and should have some left over. Before I look for another place to put the leftovers I will check with you to see if you need them.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Happy Easter Everyone. We had our family reunion last week so we had the ham last week. Now we have just about finished off the pot of beans from the left over ham bone. Windy here today and tomorrow so I will do some reorganizing in the garage and get my coleus into the greenhouses that I have in the garage and get the heat going.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, glad you mentioned the coleus. Reminded me. I am going to have to fertilize mine.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

My son got an offer accepted on a home so the family will be joining him soon. They are waiting u til school, is out. End of May. Moving during the school, was not working. That is great news but Baby Luke will be going and I have him on Fridays and his Aunt, my daughter has him on Tuesdays. He has become a major part of our lives. At 4 months they are always adorable. I guess I will have to find an inexpensive way to fly to Spokane. The President of Alligence Airlines lives down the street 4 houses. I guess I will have to hit him up to fly into Spokane. They do not fly there now. I have attached a photo of cute little Luke.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Cute baby... I wish you luck in the move its always a pain to move. I know I hated it as a teenager.
Dave

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Jnette, thanks, I would love to have some of your strawberries. Let me know how much money to send you.
Cute little baby Luke.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Lynn, I didn't get my strawberries planted today, just tried to clean up my mess some instead. I will do it tomorrow. And no, you do not need to send me any money.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Lynn, just send her one of your angels to look over her tomorrow when she is gardening.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

OK!!!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Hey, what happened to Lee and JB? Is everyone so busy gardening they can't come on and tell us what they are doing? Dave. where are you?

Maybe everyone took a long Easter vacation?

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Dave is probably watching the final game of the NCAA Men's basketball final game. I am a woman, so I can do more than one thing at a time. LOL. So I am on DG and watching the game. I am rooting for Butler. No reason, I just had to pick a team. It is a close game and that is all I wanted.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi:
I am here... I did not have much to say been busy with family. I did not get to watch the final game though I am very happy with the out come. My dear wife's employer does a contest for the sweet 16 to the final. They give prizes to the top 4 with the most points. It has to do with how many you get right in each round. Anyway Kim won this year... a new blue ray player. Its their way to break up the hum drums with tax season (she is a CPA).
They also do a dinner on the 15th for the families to thank them for being so suportive during tax season. She has been working 7 days a week 70+ hours a week, so I have not seen her much for the last 6 weeks. I am going to the lake with my parents this weekend to get a break from the rest of the house.
The weather has been fantastic 70's in the day and 50-60's at night. Not been doing a whole lot because everyone is doing well. not got a lot to take cuttings from, unless its the spirea's, which will get cut soon. I just have to make room in the GH for 5 trays. I never thought much about it but I have 4 different kinds and they all are great little shrubs.
My beans are up and growing. the rest of the garden is going quite well. I think I need to give them a dose of fertilizer. I have been toying with the thought of useing like blood meal or one of the meals to add some Nitrogen thats not one of the harsh nitrogens more natural. Idea's would be greatly accepted.
I was wondering about JB with the news a few days ago about flooding in NJ. I would think we would have had some contact if she was under water.... hmmm i get this mental image of her with a snorkle and mask on typeing us....
Thats about it for now.
Dave

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

JB

sure hope yall aren't under water

Dave

I'm getting ready to split some of the grasses that you said you were interested in, should be in the next couple of weeks, as those are a bugger... so how many starters would you like me to send ya?

I'm taking one clump and dividing it for our garden plant sale and will have many to send. Don't know the name of this one but it is a beauty....

Janet

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Janet:
For the life of me I do not remember which grass you are talking about, but you know me the more the merrier. I would say as much as can be spared without going over the 70 pound limit of the flat rate boxes. I am curious if parcel post would be cheaper as we are not into the heat of the summer. Thank you so much for remembering it.
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hey Davie, maybe you are not in the heat of the summer, but it is nearly 80 deg. today here in NJ and I am cutting and selling daffodils since last week. We had a shower this morning and I have now just finished the inside chores and must go outside and pull the chick weed. I am still looking for my lady bugs. LOL Here is a picture of the daffodil field this morning after the shower.

When I went thru the pictures the other day I cam across the flyer I had made to wholesale to florists. Thought you may like to see what I have in daffodils. Some I have are not even listed on the flyer.

Some of my customers have really cut back this year. Amazing how much people need to stop spending on unnecessary things like plants, flowers, etc. Not good for us, but I do understand. I have cut back but not on plants. LOL

Nice flier you have there.

Glad to see that you have surfaced.... and not floating on water.

Janet

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Nice group of daffs... so lets see I want 3 bunches and delivery so thats $8.00....do you take paypal????LOL
I see you are like I am we just don't do things half way do we??? I showed someone my little nursery and said it was my hobby they said I would like to see what you do if you really got serious....
Jb are you planting more Daffs each year or just holding on to what you have? You have a great patch of Daffs BTW. we are suposed to get rain tonight so we will see. I think its just a front pushing through. the weatherman showed the map last night. Looks like we might get a twister or 2 out of this one. Long dryline ahead of the front. I hope not though. we had pea sized hail friday. I just wish we would just skip the ups and downs and get on with springs level temps.
I planted my popies today so we will see what I get in the way of growth. Darn cat thinks the new bed is his kitty box.... I had to thump him to make him run. boy was he mad...ears cocked back and a mean look in his eyes.... oh well I am glad he forgets quickly... he has been camped out by me all day. I move to another spot he is right with me... I call him shadow even though his name is lucky.
enjoy the day

Dave - Sweet-looking kitty!

JB - good to know that you're OK!

Sharon - precious baby...

Well, good news here, as the snow is finally melting...for now. They have predicted clear skies for at least 4 days, so we will take what we got!

I am finally learning how to put my journal on DG, as I just have a small notebook to log in whatever I do with my seed-sowing. Also I have received my plant order today from Bluestone Perennials, which more than half of the order were half-price sale items...is that me cutting back??LOL!

Well, I am at least starting most of my annuals from seed. :-)

Well you did save money... right... well thats cutting back in my book.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Lynn, I have about 10 strawberry plants left over so if you email me your address I will send them to you. On the regular mail or Dmail. Doesn't matter.

These are the Tristars.

Jeanette

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Thank you so much Jeanette!
I will Dmail it now.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Gotcha.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Hey thanks for the cute baby comment. That will probably be the last grandchild, unless Todd and his wife have another one. Next will be great grand children. Hopefully that will be quite some time.

Oldest grandchild is in 2nd year of college. Actually first but she had enough credits from college courses while in high school to move to a sophomore in college. And those credits did not cost anything. She comes home in two weeks for the summer and she is ready. She already has a summer job at her Daddy's law firm as a file clerk but she is not going to work for the first week. She told me she is going to sleep for a week and then go to work. Her Daddy is as Corporate Attorney, not an ambulance chaser.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes Sharon, I think that is nice that the kids can do that now. Get the college credits while in high school. My grandson did the same thing. Kind of gives them a leg up without the high cost.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Love your kitty Dave. You think you have a problem with one. I have 5 who think all the open soil is litter and it makes me crazy. I hate POOP!
I will add another 200 bulbs this fall and that will be it. I am just too old to keep this cutting and selling up another year. Good thing about them, they just multiply and look pretty.
I must keep my greenhouse going and that is all I have the strength to do anymore. My right arm that I injured in the fall last year has not gotten back enough strength to pull weeds and do the things I need to do with the field work. So, I have no choice. It makes me so frustrated. I am not mentally 81 but I am physically, well almost. LOL

Little Luke is adorable. It is difficult being a long distance Granny, except, when they get older, the webcam does wonders. Good luck oand God Bless. You will have an adjustment to make.
Also, no need to make excuses for the attorney in the family. My sons father was a District Attorney and Criminal Trial Lawyer for many years. In fact I worked for him as a kid and many years later married him. That was in the 1950's. Now, our son practices Federal Criminal Law as well as State and local Criminal law, plus his other son just retired as a General Practice Attorney and his one Daughter in Law is a Judge. So, ambulance chasers we are not, but we do make money from the scum of the earth and crooked politicians. LOL When I was married to his father, two attempts were made on his life and we lived a crazy life for many years watching for released prisoneers who he had put in jail and they were after revenge. My poor kids grew up with never knowing what was going to happen next. It was like a soap opera. LOL Plus, I was the only Mom in town who carried a 38 when she picked up the kids. What a life I had. No wonder I am such an old. I will be looking for the showers Dave, thanks for the heads up. Hugs to all.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Dave

send those showers this way, we need some rain..... my winter seed sowing jugs are so dry that now the wind is blowing them around.... guess I'll have to water then on lunch break today....since mother nature isn't..
Janet

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Mornin all:
Yes the rains came and went late last night. we had gusts over 40 mph and 4 seperate areas looked like toadnadoes could have formed from them.
Its a shame the actionsa of some of the low lifes caused you and your family trauma instead of owning their own actions. I do understand about the purse gun as well. My folks were jewelers and every christmas they would have Guns on them or close at hand. I was always carefull if mom asked me to get something from here purse. of course I would just carefully hand it to her instead of rooting around in her purse.
So what is everyone doing in there gardens today??? I managed to get a flat of boxwood and a mixed flat of lavendar, prowis castle, red hunneysuckle and forsythia stuck this week. Next week is artamesia, and spirea's. It really sucks when nothing is ready to cut.
well thats it for now...its back to sleep. lucky decided he wanted to play.....as he fly's across the room... no really its just feed him and then he calms down..
Janet the showers should be on you and gone by now.
Here is a pic of my little angel mercy having a bad hairday.

your little angle is so sweet....love her pic... thanks for sharing her with us.

Well the wind came but no rain and it threw a bunch of my dry milk jugs that I was winter sowing some seed in all over the patio this morning... so don't know if those seeds will germinate now or now...cry cry cry....

Janet

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

What a delightful child. Look at the hair. I would like to borrow some. When I was sick I was loosing my hair on a daily basis but now that I am getting better, my hair is actually thickening up.

Have a great day.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

She has me wrapped around her finger ... but shhhh... The forth grandbaby is due in june it will be 2 boys and 2 girls.
Miss mercy loves her shoes, skirts and hats ...its so cute to watch her. for christmas we got her a set of princess shoes and tiarra's. she kept putting different sets of shoes on and showing them off.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Lynn, your strawberries were sent out today. Should get them soon.
