Snow Lottery

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

As I shoveled today, I took a few pics. Our house is built into the hillside, so that the roof in the back is close to the ground. The roof is very steep, and the 'glacier' on it is melting and sliding down in today's 47 degree sunshine.

Here's the back of the house:

Here's the view from beneath the edge of the roof. You can see the edge of the gutter at the top, and the big sheet of ice hanging off below it. Scary!

Pegi,
What is your forecast the next week? We are to get rain starting to nice and rain until NEXT Saturday. But that could all change, the weather is NEVER right, lol.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Kywoods, your snow is so cool!!! Especially your glacier. Is your roof going to be in trouble?

I was taking photos today also, not snow but icicles! I have them copied onto an email rather than as an attachment. If you want to look at them send me your email address through your DG mail. Then I will send them to you.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Nope, the roof is steep enough so it will all eventually just slide off.
The kitties might be in trouble if they're in the wrong place at the wrong time, though...that's why we've been knocking it down when it gets too ominous, lol.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Kitties and people might be in trouble if they are under it when it decides to slip.

I saw a 10' icicle today. One second after I saw it, it fell! It would have been a good photo. But I could have been standing under it when it fell down!!!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Yikes! That's gotta be a record--where was it?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It was hanging from the gutter on the second story. Obvious, there must be a little problem there!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Heat wave, we're gonna have a tropical heat wave... maybe not quite, but things are melting a bit. Should have the snow buggy back by next week and then we will be able to work on the driveway some. Don't think it is going t be quite that warm up here Fruitstuff. :))

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

That would be great if the temps give you a break so you can dig out some!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I had 10 icicle photos and Susan/FruitOfTheVine liked this one the best.

WOW!! How much got cut off the bottom of the pic?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

That is the whole photo!

If you want to see the rest of them just send me your email address and I will send them all to you.

There are many buildings, wires, and street lamps around where I was taking photos. I tried not to get all of that when I was shooting.

Wow, you must have a killer view living on top of a mountain. And look at that table for two...lol

Wouldn't it be be nice if the power & phone lines were buried and didn't interrupt our our photos?

love the icicle shot!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

FruitOfTheVine, beautiful tree!

And yes, it is hard to get photos without all that extra stuff.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Me too onewish1.

That Norway Spruce was our Christmas tree in 1997. We have standard 8' ceilings and I remember we had to cut the top off then to make it fit inside. Over the years we've tried to save other live Christmas trees, including several Blue Spruce I really hoped would make it, but that's the only one that survived.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Many years ago when the children were young, they are now chose to 50, we would go out into the mountains and cut down our Christmas trees. Anyone that has ever done that know a tree looks a lot smaller on the mountain than it does in your living room. One year it was so big we had to move it to the family room which had a higher ceiling and still cut off about 4 feet. I hear about it every Christmas. In the early 50s we would go up in the mountains of mid Nevada and Daddy would drive with mother in the front of the truck and all 4 of us children in the back. We would go as far as we could go and then hike in because of the snow. It was legal at that time to cut down a Spruce tree. That was my mother's favorite tree and since she did not get much of anything else for Christmas because daddy was a miner, she got the most beautiful Christmas tree on the mountain.. She would scan the mountain side and spot a tree. Daddy would climb to the top of this magnificent 50' tree and cut out the top 5 feet. As it fell very slowly to the ground and landed in the soft snow, it was our job to drag it to the truck. Of course, we made it about 5 feet and daddy made it the rest of the way back to the truck. See what you did when you showed a photo of your tree. You made me remember and SMILE.....

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

What a memory!!! Cool!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

What a fun family memory! One year my then-husband and I decided it would be fun to cut our own Christmas tree, so we came out to my parents' woods (where I live now) and cut the top off one of the numerous cedar trees here. We had a high ceiling, but it was still too big. We ended up bringing it back and leaving it here on the ground, and buying a tree. I felt so bad about ruining that beautiful tree!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

How beautiful! I'm so glad you shared that recollection.....you sound more sentimental than I am.

Big SMILE back.

Glad to hear your snow finally starting to melt!

Wonderful stories about the trees.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

I was just looking at the forcast for Leesburg, VA. I have a question about it.
It says snow for Wednesday and has a ? in it.................LOL
It also says rain for Tuesday with a ? in it.................LOL

Dang, I want to be a weather man there........

OMG, I had never seen that before!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Kassy...welcome to Virginia weather. The long standing advice here is "if you don't like the weather, wait an hour and it will change." :0) They are remarkably in error almost all the time. Unfortunately this winter they have nailed it about 98% of the time. Kind of scary. A little rain would help, but we don't need a big melt here because of the flooding it would cause.

The snow is really compacting here now. I can see the top of the fence and some of the iron lawn furniture for the first time in weeks. Still a long way from seeing any grass though.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Looks like it won't be melted by my date LOL! Oops!! Never living in snow may constitute a reason for that, I know nothing about it other than it's cold, it can be good to eat, fun to play in, it's easier to get rid of than ice, and it's safer than ice!

Love the icicles! Too bad you didn't get a picture of that icicle, that would have been great! Glad nothing was under it, those are very dangerous.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Took a few photos today, mostly of those icicles melting, falling, and a couple of trees.

Those were more great pics today, Carol. Number 6 was my fav and that tree was my second fav. Which ones did the rest of you like?

I wish you'd been right, Crissy. We did have a partial meltdown today. It was almost glorious with the sun shining and temps in the low 50's. I walked around the yard without a coat on! By the way, that's our normal temp this time of year but we haven't been that warm since when, Nita....early November?

We can actually see some grass, it's brown but nevertheless it's grass. Most of the snow on the concrete edgers around my long garden has melted. Several inches left in the yard are just a slushy mess til it freezes again tonight making a skating rink in the AM. A lot of the snow's melted inside that bed by maybe a foot, and OMG I have new growth on my butterfly bushes, phlox, daffodils, grape hyacinths, tulips and no telling what else under the blanket of snow. My daylilies are peeking out too with new green growth! Did y'all hear me squeal?

(Zone 7a)

I heard it clear over here!!! LOL

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Not everyone has seen the icicle photos or the ones from today. I only have 3 emails from this snow group plus emails from another group. I need your email address to send the photos to you. But most people liked the tree photo. Here is the other one you liked.

It has cooled down here. We got a little rain overnight, but sun was out this afternoon. Just a few days ago we could go out without a jacket, but that has changed. I don't know if we are supposed to get more rain or not. My sweet peas have now grown to the top of the iron gate. Maybe I need to put an extention up. Lavender and peach colors so far. I just hope all of the plants bloom. They are on the side of the gate that faces the neighbors, not my intention but as long as I get blooms I'm happy.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

If we could only have some sweet peas! Photos please.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I like pic #4 because it looks like a big bird in the tree!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

KyWoods, I think that one is kind of cool. That is an icicle that melted, fell down, and got caught in the tree.

The next photo is what it looked like BEFORE it melted and fell!

The comparison is bazar.

What fun!! Can I take 4/11 ?
Thats currently unspoken for and also the house number where I grew up. Good sign!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Sally, that sounds like a good date. Who knows, it might be July before she is snow free! lol

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Sally I will add you in and thanks for joining in. I think I will make a cut off of Friday the 26th of Feb. for entering your date. So anyone lurking go ahead and put in your two cents worth soon. I'll start a new thread then and post some new pics. We are supposed to get a lot of rain this week and maybe things will start to change.

Fruity I'm so glad your shrubbery is looking up. We were just talking about it this morning and so much of mine is still under snow that I shudder to think how damaged it will all be when I can see it again. I know we are going to have a lot of work this Spring from folks pruning out snow damage and even removing things. Already had a few calls. Sure am glad I didn't try to put out any brugs last fall and mulch them under. Wouldn't have been a good winter to try that!

Did someone mention a photo of sweet peas? They are growing in leaps and bounds and spreading all over the place. Flowers are slowing in blooming, but what can I expect in February! Since I took this photo I have a couple of peach color ones pop open. Will have to take more photos.

Went back through this thread and noticed I had posted this photo before. My CRS is really working today. Will try to post a different photo soon.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Samigal, yes, let's see the peach ones. The purple ones look so large. I tried growing them a couple of years ago and they didn't do much and just withered in the sun.

We are getting so tired of WHITE!
