New 2010 Garden Photos

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I just added RI Harmony last fall, looking forward to them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How tall are they? Are they squished by snow? How long does the bloom last for individual plants?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

OOOOOO, now I can't wait!!!! I have that "Harmony" too. also Katherine Hodgkins, they broke ground at least.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor, the next town has even higher taxes than us so that's ok, I'll wait for my flowers.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love them Weeze

South Hamilton, MA

reticulatas are 4" & under as a rule. Harmony is the most reliable which we have tried. They come usually at the end of March here.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Lucy.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I love them all and they are the joy of the start of the bulb season for me. A collage of many of the ones I grow. Forgot to picture Harmony, but they are all lovely. I have had the least success with Natasha and Pauline. But they were planted in not the best spot. Patti

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I know one is Pixie (gee, how did I remember that name lol) The other may be Katherine someone. I ididn't know they would be so tiny, but they sure are cute and such welcome relief from winter white.

Spring is on it's way......please!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Allison you win the snow contest. My snowdrops are buried too.
We will have a really warm day today and last nite the temps didnt getunder 40* I chanced it and walked to where the crocus bulbs were. and they are comming up.I also noticed the deer had eaten my oakleaf hydrangea, just the top bu nice and even so thanks deer for that.
If we get anymore melting and I can get to the gardens I will start spraying repellent, its the time of year I usually do it anyway.
Today will be warm .My guess 50's.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

even with the last couple of days being warm.. I swear not too much is melting yet

:(

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I noticed the depth changing ,its subtle but the green is coming.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I was actually happy to see the path that Randy made to the shed was muddy.. I tried to break up some of the snow in the front yard.. the top is solid as a rock

South Hamilton, MA

reticulated iris Natasha usually only lasts a yr. It is not something which you did. Snow almost gone except for a couple patches & covering the siberian iris bed, which is always the last to melt. We had rain & the terrific wind when NY & NJ had snow the last storm.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Still quite a bit of snow in my garden too - but not too deep. This week should finish it off. Big rain at the end of the week!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

congrat's victor and venu - lots of bulbs popping the surface here, still a long way to go before any blooms.

patti i can not believe you took down a rock wall!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I was wondering when he'd comment on the rock wall! LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

:) - i never checked dg yesterday - i would have just got more rocks for the steam

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Venu209. Here is a Iris histrioides Katherine Hodgkin. Which is, as I understand it, actual a Iris hybrid of Iris winogradowii and Iris histrioides. Some people that see it hate it. Not me.

irisMa, I planted more Iris reticulata Natascha last fall in a much better spot, more summer sun and drier, as the old patch that I planted in 2006 had dwindled, rather than multiplied. We only had 2 last year from the 12, but Van Engelen was selling them at a good price last fall ( 50 for $17.25) so I am giving them another go. Fingers crossed.

Wha, the rock wall was a mess, and the garden had grown past it, so it looked dumb where it was located. But the biggest reason is that the cost to import rocks to the Island is prohibitively expensive these days. We brought a whole truck over in 1982 when we were building our house which gave us the leftovers to use for paths and walls over the years. They were mostly the rejects, but fine for the less than professional paths that DH and I have laid and relaid over the years. We have no more left except 5 nice stones that I found in Feb under an old dead pine that I was hauling off to burn. Patti

just teasing - i figured everyone was expecting a comment from me - the stream was an excellent use for them, looks great!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Patti I had no idea iris would bloom this early.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Checked my records from last year and the first crocus (same yellow one) appeared on 3/12, so I'm a week ahead!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor, I had my first crocus bloom on the same day, but you beat me to it on posting pics. I was busy all day yesterday and Sat. So here are pics of my crocus, and some snowdrops, too.

Allison, I'll bet that snow will melt sooner than you think. Before you know it you'll have a long, warm spell and maybe some rain to go with it, and it will be gone in a matter of days to a week. Then you'll be saying "WOO HOO!".

Nice hamamelis pics, Patti!

I love Iris reticulata. I need to get myself some one of these days. Every year I tell myself that, and I still haven't done it. So pretty!

JoAnne and Allison, get out the blow dryer!!!!!

Whaaaaaa my galanthus are under 2 feet of snow.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Bummer! Like I said to Allison, your snow will be gone soon. Have faith!

Karen

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Nutfordaylily, great collage, better sight to see than almost anything. I have Galanthus in Nantucket, but no crocus yet. Here in Vt we just have snow. Here are the girls today by the Brook. Major melting today. Road is a muddy mess. Patti

Very nice, Karen! (But I was first! I waited three weeks to post the pics. ^_^)

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

A lot of melting here today and tips emerging. Spring will be here soon.

South Hamilton, MA

I. reticulata is early as it is a bulbus iris, not rhizomes like the bearded, siberian & JI.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Victor and Patti.

Are you serious, Victor?!!! Those crocus of yours were blooming three weeks ago? Or you were just waiting 3 weeks for them to bloom? Mine just started yesterday, but I didn't get to post till today.

Patti, your girls are looking good.

I got a lot of raking done today in front gardens. Weather was perfect. About 60 for a high. The rest of the week will continue to be nice.

More crocus in bloom here today. Quite a few, in fact. I got more pics. Here's a new collage.

Hee hee - just playing, Karen.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, You had me speculating that you had planted them near a dryer vent or some source of heat next to a masonry wall. So Victor has the early one, but I would say nutsfordaylily has an army of them, so I give you both a big smile. Patti

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Thanks, Patti!

Karen

South Hamilton, MA

Just very early crocus next to the house are in bloom. No sign of any either east or west further out in the beds as yet.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

They are so pretty, aren't they?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine are in a raised bed outside the porch - blocked on two sides, with southern exposure. What more can you ask for if you're a bulb?!!
