WOW rides through the Gypsy Camp

(Zone 5b)

so the stove is to the left of the fridge? and the chimney wall with the opening is to the right?

Jesup, GA

Some ones at the door I'll be back.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

JJ, instead of moving the outside wall, what if you added a pantry with new outside walls. Then just make an opening through the existing wall to the new pantry.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok here. Remember I told you I couldn't draw a straight line LOL
The dishwasher is moving over by the sink, don't care what he says and the stove and ref can move.

oh good I was trying to draw a pic and take a pic of my pic with my cell phone, now I see I have no memory card in my cell phone! sheesh where are all the cameras??

ok, you just forgot to label the chimney wall with that cut out window to the living room.

also, there's only one door into the kitchen? no back door or anything?

Would work for me, but in his mind if he is going to go to all the work to add on another room, might as well make the whole thing bigger.

He has even suggested turning the kitchen back into a den and move the kitchen back to the room I use for computer, which was the original kitchen 100 yrs ago.

I think he just wants to torture me. hahaha

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm real bad at this stuff unless I see it live, but it only makes sense to have the dishwasher by the sink!

Keep in mind if you do cupboards to the ceiling you have to be able to reach them somehow. I know you thought of that already.

On my little smiley shelf cupboard (I forgot what thread, I posted a picture) the top of it is not up to the ceiling, I put some things up there I never use but look nice.

I'm with ya Venice! Rooting for The Colts! Rooting for The Saints, Moon! No, I don't really follow football too much, but the Colts & The Saints would be a good superbowl, says DH. And that would kind of be like Venice's team against Moon's team.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Only one door, except where that window cutout is use to be open,( not since we've owned it). The chimney is where its marked fireplace and sticks out. The fireplace is in the LR.

Back door is in my computer room which originally was the kitchen.
But that was many renovations ago.

(Zone 5b)

so the opening is between the marked fireplace and the marked door, or is on the other side of the fireplace?

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Smiley that is one of the big reasons the dishwasher never gets used except on holidays.
To far from the sink and no one can be at the table or they are in the way.

I figured the high cupboards would be for those things I only use once or twice a year. and I have a skinny stepstool to use.

DH also wants to open that opening to the LR back up.

(Zone 5b)

I agree on opening that little window looky thru back up. Is your kitchen table in there? Do you sit & eat at it?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Colts 13 Jets 17 at half time. Booho!

(Zone 5b)

like this but where's the opening?

Who can answer a football question for me?

When a player is running with the ball and he goes out of bounds, do they start where he went out of when he started running?

(Zone 5b)

I have no idea V, hubby has left the building ;)

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

The refrigerator won't fit on that wall because of the baseboard
Yes we eat in there

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I think the looky-through is to the left on your drawing, right JJ? if you open that up, you would lose whatever wall is underneath the looky-through to put something against.

Like I said, I'm more live than memorex, depends on how much wall space you have.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Venice, yes, if he was still upright and had the ball.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

and you can't put anything against the register wall, right?

Right Smiley and it throws the balance off in the LR . The opening would be between the fireplace and the stairway.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Right

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I will be back in a bit....gotta get the kid...don't start building without me....GRIN

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

DH is LHAO at me.
Maybe this will help with the opening. Picture from the LR side.
Don't mind all those cords that aren't suppose to be hanging... oops

This might put a little more perspective of room on that wall with the doorway and baseboard

Edited to ad there is 43" between the baseboard and the corner.

The other side of the chimney

The chimney sticks out 17" and there is 511/2" between chimney and doorway

JJ, can you take a photo of each whole wall? Like stand in the corner and take a photo at an angle?

(Zone 5b)

ok put the fridge next to the sink, the dishwasher between the sink & stove, open the opening, ditch the table & chairs and buils an island with storage cabinets underneath and a counter to eat at. Or make your dining room the eat in kitchen (I see it through the doorway, open that wall up).

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

JJ, That 17" deep area between the chimney and the doorway would be perfect for your pantry It would give you about 48 SQ FT of storage space (actually a little more cuz I am rounding things off.) It would be flush with the chimney, so wouldn't protrude into the room

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

The doorway is the only part of that wall that is in the dining room.
I still think if I open that up its going to look funny in the LR. The staircase wasn't there when it was opened up before. ( did you see the pic from the LR side?)
The rest is a interesting thought.
DH said you have to have all the measurements so he gave me all of them. LOL ( He still made me draw it)

Told me to let him know when it was done...

Thumbnail by jjsgramma
(Zone 5b)

yeah we were going without measurements haha and with no formal training, mind you *grin*
geez I have one really busy week and there's STUFF all over my house...ugh!

(Zone 5b)

your staircase is beautiful, it's a showpiece and it deserves to be seen.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Hey Lynn, how is the bed/bath project going? Ya need to update us on your progress.

So JJ, what do ya think about putting a narrow pantry in by the chimney?

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Get use to the stuff all over, it's easier than stressing over it..

Hmm keep those ideas coming. Never thought a bout a pantry there.
There is a closet on the other side of the wall by the baseboard. thought about opening that up but not sure I want to lose the closet in the only room that could someday be a bedroom if I an't get upstairs....

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Nice thing is, the pantry could snug in between the studs, giving you a little more shelf space. Then it would just be a matter of finishing off the exterior. You could use BI-fold doors on it so it would not restrict the doorway into the LR. Keep your other closet....Lord knows we all may need a level playing field one day. GRIN

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

I had thought about putting some shelves around the chimney but never thought about putting the pantry there. I also though about closing up the hole and putting one on that side. Its a interesting thought.

Writing it all down so I don't forget. I just know he better start doing something while he's not working much, because when it gets nice I know he will never be home, he will be working.

(Zone 5b)

that's what I was trying to write here, either open the opening all the way, or wall it up all the way, it's doing you no good.

Thumbnail by Lynnie6868
Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

You know I had thought about him making a hidden door in the dry wall over there so I could hang my broom in between the studs. Don't know why didn't think of a pantry, I also wanted something for garbage can to go into so dog would leave it alone and I could take down the baby gate.

Wanted one built in the cupboard but he said I woulod just miss the can and make a mess. lol

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Right it does no good except that little counter makes a catch all for everything and is always a mess.
I lean more toward making a solid wall than opening it up.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

The amount of space you have there would allow one section between the studs to hold garbage can, mops brooms, etc and still give you over 3 ft in length for the pantry. Kill all those birds with one closet....grin and get rid of the baby gate...TADAH....grin

(Zone 5b)

well if you make a mess you clean it, that's all lol
I was going to try to draw in a built in next to the stove for your trash can, I can't use that draw thingy very well. Or the cupboard could be a big corner cupboard.

Build up the fireplace bricks on the kitchen side (so it looks like it used to be open but is now bricked in), wall up the opening, and build shelving on either side of the fireplace or closed cabinets with maybe one glass door on each side to display stuff, or a mantel on the brick fireplace for display.

Or open up both walls around the fireplace, but extend the brick work out on either side to make it wider and more of a divider between rooms (is that the living room on the other side?)
