۞ Sweet Interruptions ۞181

That is what I had LK and believe me it is wonderful!! Thanks for the recipe--Kim and I had already been putting our heads together to try and duplicate it.

Raleigh, NC

ok - had to take a break. gotta finish my quilt shop saga-

on the way home, went to Variety Store advertising quilt stuff. What a HOOT! Like walking into a $1 store from back in the 50's. Told Randall "ya gotta come inside!" He hates that. He did, and while I perused cloth, had a ball finding a cat, dog, and a bone cookie cutters, a trinket for Ruth, and a cow bell that says "Bevin Bell" on the front for DD Bevin. THEY HAD OUR TIMELESS TREASURES PRINT. Bought more, a TT print that matched it, and some more 1/4s.

on south in VA, we couldn't find next one. Stopped at "Bonny's Sew Shop". no fabric, but got my first look at what a wide arm quilting machine looked like - wowser! $7900. I'm in love. That's a lot of irises to sell. "Diane" directed me to the place we wanted. The Sew Simple Shop had IRIS PRINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! bought 5. plus 7 more fabrics for the quilt. had to get Randall for more $. he didn't blink, but he did say "enough."

didn't tell y'all about the office party celebration. folks were fun to visit with, but food was...... I was scooping a shrimp out of the salad when I thought I saw one of those fat, fresh looking, suckered tenacles in the salad move. Shrimp was undercooked, tasted like dipped in fish guts. Drank too much wine, ate a ton of bread and grilled veggies smothered in oil. Even deli ham tray and the sauteed mushrooms on bruschetta tasted off. Have been nauseous since, still.

Dellroy, OH(Zone 6b)

Synda, so glad he got his stuff back...he worked too hard to have some idiot do that to him.

Bonjon......hope you start feeling better soon....things might have tasted "off" because of the sinus infection.....but if you start feeling worse, don't hesitate to get to the hospital....food poisoning is nothing to mess around with, especially if it is seafood.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

yes, Julie helped me a great deal!
The pastor and kids loved the colouring page, and we sang an old favourite that I'm not sure the kids knew... they're only 5 & 4, after all lol "Jesus bids me shine" is one the kids have been singing for a few Sundays, so hopefully they'll pick it up lol

OK - quilt "palette" so far, all from Jinny Beyer Studio in Great Falls VA. Every fabric in the shop was $9/yd - made things easy! Photo taken 1/23/2010 in sunlight in the hotel room. The big piece under the "friendship" piece Jaye sent is backing, kinda a darker yellowy cream and white mottled - reminds me of sponge painted walls. I'll take some close up shots, too. None of the fat quarters is a plain solid but they look that way to the camera.

Can I ask y'all - we learned to hand piece and to machine piece, always with a straight stitch. Nowadays does anyone do anything different to the seams or selveges, other than press them flat?

Synda, you must be relieved the culprit is caught!! Wasn't wise of that room mate huh? He doesn't need to be in college to be a career thief!!

LK and Maid M.. I've never tried that dish --- gorgonzola steak... So, they use gorgonzola cheese, melted on the steak... over pasta? Got to check that recipe.
I had grilled chicken parmesan over fettucine today.. not close huh?

Oh well... Audrey. There are no pine trees on our property, but too many on others and the wind make sure they carry all that allergens to ours!! So, sinus is a constant issue with me here.

Twyla, take care of that back. I'm still suffering with mine.
You are indeed so patient with your DH. Guess your daughter sees that and thought her marriage will work out if she stood by him.

Pictures Susan? Of the food :D I'm glad you managed to salvage the 'program'....
We had only THREE kids in church today and one teenager :O( Parents were there, apparently they all were under the weather at the same time!

Bon, I am so happy you set out to discover for yourself what has happened to quilting since 30 years ago!!!
Well, 30 years ago.. or more.. my quilting teacher swore by Jinny Beyer's method of quilting... complicated mathematics and of course, those prisms and Indian motifs which I see now in her fabrics. Jinny loves dark colours too, as for her designs, they are inspired from her stay in India.
Nothing different.. same 1/4" seam all around, but try to press the seams to the darker side, unless doing that can cause bulk, if having too many seams pressed on the same side.... then open up the seams.

Hey there Julie! Hope you've found something that could help you in those mags.

Waving to Trisha.. miss you sistah!

I'm off to bed.. early rise again tomorrow. So to my sistahs.. rest well..

Oh my goodness, I have been looking at jenny's site, and she has so many beautiful fabrics. Now look what you have done! I wish she was so much closer, so I can look in person, but then I would be in so much trouble! Lover her patterns for quilts, and her fabric! WOW!

Good night everyone. Sleep tight!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Waving back Jaye..... I'm still a bit on the scratchy side but I AM beginning to fell a bit better...guess I just need patience.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry I've been AWOL! LOL...my job interview went well, I think...he said they'd be making a decision in the next week or two, so now it's just sit and wiggle...

Kavin didn't have his test on Thursday for the CF, they are doing it tomorrow. I didn't get to talk to Chris, so I don't know what the hold up is. So keep those prayers coming!

I worked for my friend at the property management/realty business filing and coordinating for her on Friday.

Saturday Bertie and I went to a memorial service and then to dinner to celebrate their 46th anniversary.

My DD, Lisa, got the job at county she was hoping for....so she gets to keep her seniority of vacation. She starts to work on Feb. 8th, so she's a happy camper.

Anyway, I've managed to stay busy...only 11 months till Christmas...
ducking and running now!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh...meant to tell you...the sistah reunion is the weekend after Father's Day, not the first weekend. So...June 26th/27th. If you're a "for sure coming", please let me know so I can try to figure out sleeping arrangements.

I'm already getting excited!!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! Coffee is on!
Joyce noce to see you posting, crossing fingers for you to get he job. Saying a prayer also! I have my Dad here, and coming to your place all depends on where he is at that time.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Good Morning everyone!
Synda I am so glad he got his X-Box back, those are not cheap and what a scoundrel to steal it!

AAAGGHHH Christmas! LOL!!

Joyce great news for your DD and hopefully you'll hear something pretty soon on your interview. I'd bug the ever living crud outta them, that's what I did here, I kept coming back to visit! LOL

Ooooooo reunion in Ohio! That's right, I'm going to try to make it but it depends on finances and if Dave wants to come or not.

I've got to check on a few other threads and get to work here, it's already piling up.

Raleigh, NC

Found the shop listed on a "VA quilters" site. Didn't know she was anything special. They mentioned a website, but said I could email any of the numbers they wrote down for me and I could order what I needed that way.

A lady came in with a quilt she'd just finished, she was just an average quilter - was SO gorgeous. I liked her border so much I located it with help - on her website it's Coventry - 7130-03.

In fact, most of my fabrics are: purple fabric is the Hermitage - 8736-02. Backing material Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 9812-16. Mauve and garnet "iris" colors - Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 9412-15, Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 5866-72, Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 7424-10, Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 6931-22, and Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 6342-07. Teal accent colors Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 6931-26, Jinny Beyer Palette 2007 - 6739-03 and one I can't find on the site that looks a bit like teal on dusky navy tapestry. there's one like it but it has more green to it. Blacks - Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 9410-14, and Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 7424-08. Creams and neutrals Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 9812-01 and Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 7424-08. Peachs - Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 4795-23, Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 6739-06 and Jinny Beyer Palette 2009 - 6342-13.

the gal there, Linda, did something interesting. She took two pieces or mirrored glass without any framing, each about 5 to 6" high by 12" long, and put them at a right angle together on a piece of fabric, thereby demonstrating a kaleidoscope effect in the mirrors of the fabric print. It was cool.

Wish I had time to take some classes with them!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Bonnie, that procedure you described with the mirrors is achieved through what is called "Whack and Stack" piecing. I have taken the class but need a refresher one as it has been a while and I was very much preoccupied with my hubby's illness when I did it--not good timing really. It is fun but be forwarned--it can be addictive. LOL
I will see if I can find some of my blocks I did in the class and the effect that was a result of that method--I used a jungle print with zebras--turned out really "kewl" or I think it did.

UHm....sleepover in Ohio? tell me more please? I live in Ohio and would love to meet you guys.

I thought about using some of the fabric Jaye sent to quilt a pillowcase for me and each of my girls...now I just need to get some other coordinating fabric and dust off the sewing machine.

Joycet, saying a prayer......and your not the only one thinking about Christmas....I just started a Christmas savings account today.....It just seems to come too fast each year.

Raleigh, NC

And the iris prints from the Sew Simple shop.

Joyce - I'm very much hoping to come, but a great deal will depend on DH and finances. His company is a little shaky at the moment. hoping to drop back in on y'all on my way home from 2010 AIS conference, but we'll probably head over to SD instead since this isn't the 1st weekend. another trip north later in the month may not be in the budget if we want any beachtime at all. But I AM going to put it in our "planner." We've never done any exploring around Ohio, just driven through it to elsewhere.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Bon, those colors are so pretty, can't wait to see what you do with them all!

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

Morning Ladies,
Jaye in answer to your question: Yes it is Robert Kaufman fabric that you sent me, and boo hoo I am 1 1/8 of a yard short for making the dress. Will go to his website to see if I can order more.

We are getting tons of rain and snow. Will be good for this summer, lakes will be overflowing.
I've been shopping at JoAnn's getting fabrics to start on my king size quilt. Will make one more trip back this week end to use two coupons for 50% and 40% off.

Guess what!!! I finally met Chuck!!!! Oh man, he is a giant, lol. It was funny how it happened. I had not heard from him since Friday night. I had to bowl Sunday and told him that I would be there. Well no word from him so I figured it was over. But then Sunday morning I got this funny feeling that I was going to finally meet him. While I was bowling I had this feeling that someone was watching me(He was watching me through the bar window, said what he saw was NICE!!!). I looked around and didn't see him anywhere. A little later I had got up to bowl got a strike and was high fiving the other bowlers when I felt someone watching me again. I glanced up and looked right at him, glanced away then right back again. There he was sitting with a huge grin on his face.
I walked over to him and he grabbed me and gave me the biggest BEAR hug ever. Talk about giddy, lol. I felt like a teenager.Any how we talked for awhile. I asked him if I was what he expected and he said "Yes, you are very pretty" ^_^. He had a lot of errands to run so he couldn't stay very long.

Later that evening we were chatting online, he had told me that he wanted to kiss me really bad but was affaid he wouldn't be able to stop. He said that when I saw him for the first time that my eyes told him that I was very happy to see him. And he knew that I wanted him to kiss me. Sooooooooooooooooo now we are waiting for this weekend to be able to go out on a REAL DATE. He said that if he doesn't work to late Tuesday he will come by to see me at bowling. He will be training another truck driver so that he can go back to normal work hours. It was instant attraction on both sides ^_^.

Yesterday I was chatting with Mike, the military guy in Oroville Wa. Come to find out he has a cousin that lives here in Auburn that I know. What a small world. I was telling him how cold it was here. He is in Lake Havasu, AZ right now and asked if I would like to come down for a weekend. He would pay for my plane ticket. I told him I won't fly by myself and that I don't like to fly period. So he then asked me if there were any year around RV parks near me. Yep about 3 miles down the road. So he is checking it out and may be coming to Auburn to meet me. Oh boy!! Now I've got two men very interested in. R
My Friday night date with Rocky didn't go so well. He is a strange man. I can't figure him out at all. So I don't think there will be any more dates there.

Cookie, sure hope you get the job!!! As far as me coming to your place in June that is up in the air right now. I really really want to come so that I can meet everyone and give you all great big HUGS.

Ok gotta get busy here TTFN!!!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh Cindy, sounds like you have met someone special? Sure sounds like it! Let us know how it goes?
Where is everyone. Time to rise and shine, it is lunch time! How about a grilled cheese, and tomato sandwhich?

Raleigh, NC

iris prints will be for aprons and potholders, blouses, skirts, etc. If I'm going to slim down, I need new things to wear. I'm probably the only one in the iris societies that doesn't have something with irises all over it!

first things first - must clear out my real estate office - been doing so little business, it's become a junk room. First I've got to clear the hallway and parts of my closet. There are things in the hallway waiting for me to feel up to pulling down the attic stairs. There are things in my closet from 19 years ago that haven't fit in forever. It's time to move them all OUT> Need space for sewing machine and cutting board.

Still don't know what a rotary cutter is, but at Jinny's the staff snipped and torn - fabric was straight and true. at Sew Simple, I think that was a rotary cutter, and if so, does it cut anything but straight? once her guide wobbled mid cut and I thought she'd jipped me a bit, but then she showed me she'd gone a smidgen over to begin with. Still, I kinda liked seeing the Jinny's staff rip that fabric and it come out straight and true. Do rotary cutters do more than one piece at a time?

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Bonnie, nothing does like tearing the fabric as it will always go with the grain. You do "square fabric" up to use a rotary cutter and they can cut several layers at once provided the blade is not dull. I am not quite sure what you mean byreferring to the rotary cutter cutting anything but straight. I can say you can cut circles, half circles and other shapes as long as you are using a study template as a guide. I use the smaller size cutters for those cuttings--not the huge one, that I use for straight cutting.

Have I confused you now? LOL

Raleigh, NC

oh I cross posted with two - I'm up for lunch, haven't eaten yet! and Cindy - well, you go have fun, girl. It's fun "listening" to your escapades!

Oh OH! At Beyer's studio, I saw a pieced purse made of some of her border prints, and they were explaining how to make the purses out of the soft cottons by using fusing stablizers. So that's how y'all do that! I've been admiring the bags y'all have been making, but wondering how on earth they hold up to even normal wear for me! So I might find myself trying that!

editted to add- nope, not confused yet Maid M. I cross posted with you now, but I'm getting the idea. Will need a large hard plastic surface, though, right? for cutting on?

This message was edited Jan 25, 2010 12:45 PM

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

No, the mat used for cutting is very flexible and soft so that the cuts heal. I use the green one made by Omnigrid as I like it better but other have their favorites also. One thing of importance--the mat should always be stored flat as they can warp and once they do that--gone!!! Also after learning the hard way--be very careful of the blade--they give new meaning to the word "sharp"--LOL When I took classes the instructors always made us drop a quarter in a jar each time she found our blades unsheathed. I don't how or why but I continue that practice at home and sometimes (when I am in a rush usually) I have enough for a nice extra piece of fabric. Sort of my rewards jar for being careless.

I think you are going to love your new adventure.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm here.. just for a while. Thank you LK for the sandwich, I need fuel and no time to even turn on the stove!!

Skimming thru... forgive me if I had ignored someone.. not deliberate.. CRS here.

Cindy, I do hope you get to go to the reunion!!!! SO, we can box your ears if you hadn't found a perfect mate by then!!!

Cookie, I'm hoping it's His will you get that job. Congrats on your DD still being able to enjoy the same benefits. All should go well on Kavin's test I hope.

Bonnie, I am so thrill over your renewed interest in quilting!!! Thank God there is Maid M, to help you. She's instrumental in stirring my interest again.
As for the stack and whack, I've done some blocks with Asian fabrics (of course)... just got to look for them. That day when Kel treated me to almost an all store splurge, he purchased the specially made mirror too.
Oh DO PLEASE share your excitement with us. Who knows we might learn something new from you too!!!
Psssst... stick to Omnigrid.. you won't regret it.

Then there is also Barb!!!!! She's extremely helpful with newbies and has a BIG heart just like the rest of you!
Of course Audrey, who has been quilting too....
and LK....
and our own Canadian Susan.. thank goodness!

Ohhh Julie, try your hand at a nice lap quilt. Lap quilt won't need much material.. probably you just need an extra 2 yards total for the front?
Maid M.. what do you think?

LK, when I'm through for the day... I'll check on that website. Don't know she has one. Jinny Beyer must be the original designer for 'gem' fabrics.

Hiya Crissy~~~~

Gonna enjoy this sandwich with diet Pepsi... then off helping Kel..

Oh by the way, please my sistahs... say a prayer for my niece, Dewi, who wants to enroll at Coastal Carolina University, which is about 40 minutes away from us. She's facing resistance from her father who won't bankroll her education if she chose to leave France :( Yep, the controlling kind...even though her aunt and uncle will be looking out for her.

Edited to add:
"Dewi" is pronounced "Day/wee" and her name means Goddess in Indonesian

A hint for all who is making a lap quilt. I make mine with a crib size batt. The size is perfect!

Raleigh, NC

good to know! Batting is a discussion for LATER. LOL

Just realized the duvet will need two backings - one for around the feather bed, and one for the back of the quilt top. The one I've purchased if for around the featherbed and won't be quilted. It's in 3 pieces, will be seamed horizontally on the bed, and will have the 120" zipper attached to one of the seams. The zipper will run to within 4" of each side, so getting the comforter in and out should be easy. It's put in just like on a dress zipper, only longer.

It's $81 plus tax and shipping to duplicate this backing for one to be quilted to the top. Should I try for something that matches on the cheap? or think long term>> what if someday I want to detach this 3rd side and, with a few seam rips, go back to just a quilt? The backing I have is part of Beyer's permanent palette, so I can get more as much as a year from now. Guess I don't have to decide now.

This new interest became expensive fast. However, I've been looking for something for our bed for five years. Found nothing I liked. Nothing of the quality or beauty these quilts are! Can't afford to buy a quilt this size - it would be $1,000.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Hey Bon, it is a prcey hobby, but well worth the satisfaction, knowing you made it, and is something you want! I have never seen a 3rd side to a comforter? They are usually just like a pillow case, that you slide the comforter into, and fold over. Some have buttons, yours has a zipper

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

....not to mention the heirloom that will be created to pass on in the family.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Just popped in to say HI and to read threads.
Good to see we have a newbie quilter here, willing to jump in!! ^_^

skooting back to work ladies - take care!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Cindy Yay!! You are so cute, you so deserve a good man!

Waving to Everyone!!!!!!!

Going to get back to work, just wanted to take a minute and get semi-caught up anyway. 39 minutes till I'm outta here!

Raleigh, NC

A duvet cover is basically a pillowcase for a down comforter. Featherbeds can be washed, but it's a real pain to get them to dry and there's always feather loss as the water encourages decomposition over time. With my dust allergies, washing is a must.

But most duvet covers are like the sheeting and tend to be boring. the buttons can be a problem in bed - they can get rip off, hang up on other things, and get under you if you toss and turn. Zipper got me jazzed - couldn't tell it was there.

Now I realize if the top gets quilted, to help it stablize, then it's got to be quilted to something. can't quilt to the featherbed or it will get washed. can't quilt it to the one backing, as that seals up the envelope. so there would have to be two layers of backing, one quilted to the top, one forming the envelope. See?

Looks like I make the quilt, then cover cording to match and sew it to the quilt and the 2nd backing to make the envelope.

anyone have any other ideas?

Raleigh, NC

still have a ton of shredded boiled chicken. Think....it's going to go into something else in a minute!

Oh! talk about dieting. I put the boiled (deskinned and defatted) chicken into a bowl with chopped onions and as little miracle whip light as I could get away with, just enough to make a dry chicken salad. then ground on some of Weber's Kick'n Chicken seasoning. let it refrigerate, put it in multigrain pitas with lettuce and chopped tomatos. Wowser is that a good meal! I didn't even want potato chips with!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Ah, I got it! Sounds like it will be very pretty!
Hello to Susan, Crissy, and Marion, Audrey, Cindy. Hope your all doing well.
Jaye where you off to today! Hope your back is doing better.
Meatloaf, with baked potatoes for dinner!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Bon, that sounds good! I will have to look for the chicken seasoning.

Raleigh, NC

Someone gave it to me in a big grinder bottle -- grinder like for peppercorns. But I've seen small ones in the spice isle at Food Lion and Kroger, just a few in Harris Teeter. Think Walmart carried the big bottles at one time. My friend bought them by the case.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Just got in, assigned Kel to feed the babies.

That's what Kel had for supper LK. Meat loaf and mashed potatoes at a local restaurant. I'm not much for ketchup glazing the meat loaf.. so I ordered buttered pasta with broiled shrimps. That's my downfall. I love pasta.

Back has improved some LK. When I walk in the yard, I have to pay close attention to the ground to avoid any holes, objects or the fur babies that love to dart in and out of my legs... to avoid any tripping!
But today, I had to accompany Kel on his errands~BUT, I had a step stool to help me get in and out of the box truck.
He wouldn't mind the least if I chose to stay home, but it will be a lonely drive for him.

Bonnie, you could do simple straight quilting to attach your top to a backing.. preferably with a much thicker material, like upholstery/drapery/twill fabric?
And you can also use the same fabric for the 2nd backing? Just an idea.

Gonna check other threads and pop in a movie "Jane Austen Book Club" -- catch you all later!!
