Cats vs. Dogs

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

My cats cuddle. Salem stays the longest. The lap is his favorite place to be.

Dogs are a mans best freind. If they are taught right from a young age, they mind. Dont take me wrong, cats are OK but they are independent little things. How many people can get their cats to sit or shake?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Hey everyone. I love both, but due to my lifestyle have cats. I must admit that I can't stand the way some dogs slobber up their water and then need to come and give you kisses. If I did get a dog it would be one that doesn't drool...yuck! I grew up with a Dachshund, Schnapsie and loved her dearly. When I was very young, we had a Shepherd named Baron. I do love the 'security' of a dog.

I currently have two strickly indoor cats. They are both very affectionate and are at the door waiting for me to come home. Precious is definitely the lap cat. As soon as I am sitting, she is on my lap. Rumor thinks he is a dog. I can play fetch with him for hours! Their favorite toy is a piece of paper rolled into a ball. How convenient is that? They both sleep with me all night, at least I think it's all night...They also like to hog the bed. Rumor still sucks his 'thumb' when he sleeps. Precious likes to knead.

I could do without the litter box, but it beats having to walk a dog in inclement weather. I don't have to rush home to feed the cats, where a dog would not be too thrilled at that aspect. Dogs are more easily trained. Either breed requires some 'baby-proofing'. Both breeds enjoy being loved by their human!

Hi Anita!

Thomaston, CT

Bill---that was a breed I've never heard of--British White Retriever----obviously an English breed, as was the man who owned him---but his food aggression was horrible---my dale started that right after we adopted him, but I pulled the food away every time until he sat & waited patiently---now I can take a steak out of his mouth---if I ever gave him one, LOL!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yankee Cat can get her cat to sit and shake!! Wallingford can do lots of tricks. He is unusual though.

Anita, that's so cute about Rumor sucking his thumb. Are those photos both Rumor and Precious?

Good luck Bill, but ya aren't gonna get any sympathy from me. Dogs are great. Maybe you shouldn't watch Ceasar Milan?

Food aggression is easily stopped before it begins. When they are pups pet them while their eating and stick your hand in their food and take some out and let them eat it out of your hand.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I did that all the time when my girls were puppies Jen... fed them out of hand.. and after a while they let me take food right out of her mouth.. last week I dropped a piece of pork on the floor after we got done eating... I told Jily OFF... and she left it.. went back for it.. OFF again.. and she backed off.. such a nice thing.. I started that just by taking toys or chewies when they were young.. just told them off... when they let go.. good girl.. just that easy

Dog are as smart as their owner. The owner will over come with patience and time.

Dogs are as smart as their owners

So true!!

I love them both, but dogs I think give a bit more affection, I really need the unconditional love thing and mostly I don't think you get that from cats.

I have had, and loved, both dogs and cats. But I have to say that I'd rather have a cat than dog now. They are just so much less work and since my schedule is beyond crazy, I couldn't handle a dog anymore. I agree that dogs are often more affectionate than cats, and the way my dog used to do 360's when I came home was very heart-warming. But my cat is very affectionate too and she greets me at the door every night. If I go behind closed doors (basement, bathroom, etc.) she sits outside the door and waits for me. She knows my routine and if I sleep too late, she licks my face to wake me up (she's done this a few times when my alarm fails to go off - saving me from being late!). And she's full of personality. Very amusing! That being said, I've known some very annoying cats too...

Great shots, Susan.

I think we've disproved the impression among dog lovers that cats are not affectionate or cuddly or loyal.

Some people wouldnt want a Cat or Dog. They rather have their McCaw Parrot sitting on their shoulder saying "I Love You".

Thomaston, CT

Turned on Animal Planet last night---they were introducing clips for upcoming Jan. shows, & there, to my amazement, was a friend from church---she & her family watched the unveiling of a new doghouse----she has dreadlocks, & says "I love it!" The kids are dolls----Jeffrey told me a few months ago that he wanted a beagle, but would go with what Dad suggested----how many kids say that?

1 point for the cat....no need to shovel a potty area in the snow.

1 point for the dog.....too cute trying to find the snowball in the snow.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

1 point for the cat - watching from the window and laughing his a** off at the dog freezing!

1 point for the dog *** It barks and comes in and then watches the cat sitting at the door freezing its keister off.

??? Indoor cats here.

Indoor cats here too...the only time their feet touch snow is when the dogs track it into the house. hehehe...so cute watching the cats reaching a paw out so tentatively to touch a snow spot on the floor!!

Here is the afore mentioned cat shaking hands and giving Hi Fives. And yes, he is "special".

I like his hoop move too! The piano needs some work :)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you videos are too cute!!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Yeah - they never got edited. He refuses to jump through the hoop these days. All three of my cats sit on command and also sit up on command - as long as I have a treat in my hand. Cats don't work for free.

There's Wally!

Susan your poochies are too cute!!

Just finished watching the haunted show on Animal Planet. So far, most of the affected animals have been dogs.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I've never heard of the show. What's it about?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's very interesting. Called The Haunted, it's about hauntings involving family pets. Some pretty spooky stuff!

I've never watched that one---I scare myself silly just reading mysteries! Loved the kitty tricks. Our half Maine Coon would tap my DH on the face when he wanted pats---that was it for our tricks!

North Augusta, ON

After having to clean up 3 of them this morning...before I even had my coffee...I have to give a point to the dogs for not yakking up hairballs!!
:((

Well, David and I bought a white male pomeranian pup yesterday . . . we call him Alex - and he looks like a cat. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Congrats! Have fun with him.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Congrats! You got the best of both worlds:-)
