Here is a picture of Alex, the new pomeranian. He is 3 months old - and mostly makes it to the paper to do his "business!"

We had an oops recently. No, no dog or cat babies in the works. Paul didn't full shut the back door to our deck...well...I got home from work at about 730am'ish...and my neighbor knocked on my car window before I got out...he told me that he saw it open, and went up on the deck to shut the door.

I leave Theta out of her crate all the time, the only time I shut the door is if someone is over that is dog phobic. Paul will shut the door to her crate if he has both dogs out, Iris being her Pugtastic self can't stop doing the Pug laps without taking a dive onto Theta with each lap...it drives him nuts, so he shuts her in while Iris is out.

Well, I go in the house, the house is freezing, I turn the faucet on just to make sure the sink didn't freeze or anything like that...the upstairs is roasting like a sauna...and...no cats. I was muttering several choice words, most of them rhyme with duck and spit, and many combinations. I woke Paul up, and we went searching. We found the Abbysinian nestled away in the closet under one of his shirts...check 1...We go into the bathroom upstairs, we founnd Ivan (our tuxedo kitten) sleeping in the bath tub of all places...check 2...No sign of Doofy anywhere. We shake the kitty treat bag...no Doofy...we keep calling him and calling him...no Doofy...We are downstairs, Paul is getting upset, I'm muttering even more now...lots of gerunds are flying from my mouth...Then we hear it...***thunk, thunkity, thunk, thunk***...check 3...Doofy coming downstairs to greet us. We both have no idea where he was, but all kitties are safe and sound.

We went up to Petsmart today to get the furkids some belated xmas gifts, and each cat now has a collar and a name tag :-) Just in case someone leaves the "duck-ing" door open again while I'm at work...lol.

Um...how long does it take for a cat to get used to a collar? The abby is all but going bonkers. Doofy hasn't really been phased by it to much, and Ivan keeps playing with it. We took the bells off of the collars...whoever thought it was a good idea to put bells on a cats collar must not know our cats.

North Augusta, ON

Alex is a beautiful little puppy!!!

As far as cats with collars...LOL!!
So glad you found them all, I've done the head count more than I like to remember, but with 7 I lose track of who I've counted and have to start over a couple of times ^_^

I've never tried a collar on a cat but I know when we had to get one on Klick when she was a puppy the only way I could make her accept it was to slip it on her when she was asleep. She woke up later and the collar didn't even phase her, it was like it was there all along. Can you slip the collars on while the cats are sleeping?

Is it possible to sneak up on a cat? I pretty much can't do a blasted thing with the Abyssinian. Doofy, he's to mellow to give to much of a hoot, it bothered him for about 5 seconds then he was like, "Ah, whatever, where's my food?" Ivan is just constantly chewing, or trying to, or batting at it...it's just another toy for him. The Abby is the one we are sorta kinda worried about. She'll start to run, then stop mid direction, smack at the collar and bolt in a different direction...it's funny in how she's acting, but not funny in why she's doing it...if that makes any sense.

Good luck with your new fur kid! My parents have a Pom, Teddy, he's a little squirt :-) They usually shave him down for the Spring/Summer, he ends up looking like a mini fox, and they keep his coat a little longer in the Fall/Winter. For a little guy there is an awful lot of brushing, but he has no problem with it, it's extra time spent with my Mom or Dad.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Too funny! Glad all your babies are ok. Bells on cats defeats their natural prey instinct. Can't sneak up on anything making all that noise. Not a good idea.

My cat acted psychotic with a collar. He would continuosly walk backwards in circles, as if he could back out of it. It was too painful to watch so I gave up on that idea.

Alex is a cutie!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Actually a cat can sneak so smoothly that the bell doesn't ring to alert prey.

I hope your collars have break-aways built into them. There have been tragedies when collars get caught on the top of fences with both cats and dogs. Thom - have you tried 14 kt and diamonds for Abby - she seems more of a diamond type of girl. LOL!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Yep, they all are breakaway collars.

Trying to figure out this new camera. Once I figure it out, I'll post a pic of Ivan with his collar.

Glad the kits are safe---what a feeling to see on open door---my dale would have been long gone----the pointer stays in her yard. Alex is a doll----Poms are nice dogs---listening, Bill?

Cat person here : ) I have met a few dogs that have made me think I want one but they are few and far between. Most dogs I meet aren't trained properly and jump on me and my small children even with their owners yelling and grabbing at them. My kids are usually scared to death when they have to walk into a house with a dog. So this doesn't help their fear any and usually the dog won't leave them alone for at least 15 minutes. It's quite a ruckuss having the owner yelling and my kids crying and trying to get away from the dog. I recently tried to give a Chihuahua a home when someone we knew had to move. He was a good dog but he started to get that alpha male thing with my two little ones pretty soon after he settled in. We ended up having to give him to a friend because he bit my daughter right near her eye. (for giving him a hug) I didn't want to chance it happening worse, where I've read that Chihuahuas don't have the best temperment for small children. Even with that happening my daughter says she likes Chihahuas now. (She still doesn't like big dogs unless they are the type that don't jump and gently let you know they want to be pet.)
Any how I love my old man kitty Simba. He's about 12 yrs old and the most affectionate he's ever been. I think it just takes cats a lot longer to become affectionate. When he was a kitten he was shy and curious - too busy to bother giving me attention and too scared to come out to meet new people. He is a totally different cat now. I love him so much I am going to miss him when his time comes.

Not only is Alex cute - he's smart! We have already taught him to "sit" on command (of course, that requires a little treat as a reward!) Most of the time he makes it to the paper. Somehow, we will need to eventually train him to do his
"business" - but I think he may be too small (even when full-grown) to safely go up and down stairs by himself.

Alex LOVES going for walks - but HATES having his harness removed. We have bought another one which may be easier to slip over his head.

The nice thing about a little dog, is I can put a little "border" edging along the gardens and it will be too tall for him to jump!

Dogs are born followers - that's why they are so 'trainable'. Cats are born leaders.

Just found this thread.....very interesting to see where everyone is coming from. No real surprises though, since most of us talk about our pets a lot and it is easy to know who has what for the most part. I think cats and dogs are both wonderful, and there are pros and cons to each. For me, dogs are my fur children. Period. But training them to be well socialized and friendly and well behaved is essential and not a task for the frail or impatient parent! (at least if you have 2 puppies without any older dogs to do the training for you!)

Michaela - your sweet little Alex is just adorable! Congrats!

Here is an example of how 2 puppies can turn a dog bed into a gym apparatus.....

"Men were a bit more likely than women to say they disliked cats." A now infamous quote of Jack........"if a cat moves in, I move out" Then Osee showed up. He absolutely refused to let me take him to the shelter. Osee took over the household in relatively short order. Jack still has no clue how to clean the litter box :

Hee hee. Or how to keep a promise!

Not you, Allison! They have almost tripled their weight in the 2 months we've had them! They go to the vet on Tuesday, and we'll get the official weight then.

I love their fuzzy coats!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

not sure where she got those.. but very cute!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, are they cute, Allison! Isn't Riley the new puppy? Just adorable! Do you have any photos of yours and Michelle's together? I know you posted some way back before one of Michelle's died, but I don't think I've seen any foursomes with Riley in them.

Big Day here today, developmentally speaking. Carli vaulted up and over the side of their play pen in the living room. We were both in the bedroom area getting dressed to go to a funeral. She was barking in the living room and we were ignoring her. Next thing we knew, she had joined us the bedroom. Bailey was really ticked to have been left behind. We're in a whole new phase now! Yikes!

Great!

There was a $70K study of why dogs circle before they sit ot eat. Duh!!!!!!!!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Bichons circle before they do something else too!! LOL

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah, I'd say not to eat but to sleep or... So what were the results of the expensive study Victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't know. Too dumb of a headline to want to read!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I read that years ago why they circle, their wolf ancestors circled to mat down the sticks and brush and weeds to make it more comfortable to sleep.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

that's a good one. What about when they get ready to poop?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think the study concerned OC disorder.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

OC disorder?
