Great video and story. A cat would never do that and can't.
I am def a dog person all the way. I'll pet a cat but find them utterly useless unless you're using them for a barn cat to catch mice, but you can get a rat terrier to do the same thing. I don't have to take my dog out to pee or poop(of course as a new puppy yes) he goes out on his own and was trained to do his business along the fence so there are no land mines in the middle of the yard. A cat pees and poos in the house and it's kept in a box, seems weird to me. Every cat that is owned by a close relative won't let my kids play with them. My sil's cats are scaredy cats and hide the entire time we're there, my bro's cat is just mean, you'll be petting him and all of a sudden turns and bites or scratches you, so I won't let the kids near him. Def dog!!
Cats vs. Dogs
that link was great victor - taylor hicks was not bad either. american idol starts up again the first of the year
Great video!
Venue and WC made me LOL cutting off whiskers and clothespins!!
Don't own a bulldog if you are offended by farts! My Abby could make the record books!
Yes, I think each has their place.
Cats are great for a special bond between you and them, and not sharing with others :) (my cat is like that flowerjen, she's not used to the commotion of guests) Of course, cats have different personalities like us all, but in general they seem to be better for non-constant interaction (need the playing for 15 min/day, and some affection whenever, but then she's good). They're good if you need a barn cat, or don't have the space or time to do the dog walk/bathroom thing. (the litter we use we only have to dump the cat poo, which is really nice)
Dogs are great for helping folks, like that video. And for people who want that interaction on a regular basis (see, this would totally tire me out - I need my "own" time which is why a cat is great for me). They're good for people who like to go for walks and interacting with other people.
in very general terms they're good for:
Cat = introverts
Dogs = extroverts
I think this is why some just don't "get" the other. If you're a people person, chances are you're not going to like a cat (unless they're one of the few "social" breeds)
my 2 cents :D
That was a heartwarming video, with a great message.
I break that pattern, Eve! I'm an extro who just thinks dogs are too much work.
We've always had cats and dogs when I grew up. My mother didn't want to take care of either, so they were my responsibility. I'd walk the dog. She couldn't handle having litter boxes in the house, so the cats were always outdoor cats and, sadly, inevitably, they would get squished in the road. I will never have outdoor cats unless I live where there's no traffic. Of course, then I worry about predatory animals.
I have two cats (Catawampus and Cleopatra) and one dog (Shadow) and it's a difficult toss up to choose one over the other. There's plenty of dogs I don't like and it's almost always because they're poorly trained or neglected. Dogs definitely take more effort, but I think they're more rewarding when you do. I have a fenced in backyard for Shadow to run and chase the squirrels. He also is trained to do his business near the fence. We go for walks when we want. He's a lot of fun and so loyal when we go hiking. He'll forage ahead 50 feet, then come back to make sure I'm coming. He is my constant companion and my number one admirer. He smells good most of the time. He's small enough so that I bring him into the shower with me every six weeks or so. The rolling in dead things, though, is enough to make me ban him from the house. When he does that, I make sure I shampoo him with the sweet smelling perfume. I'm sure that really ticks him off.
The cats can be a lot of trouble sometimes. They knock things over and get inside cabinets... I've had to child-proof my house over the last year because of the cats. I'll get the hang of it. Cleaning their litter is probably the least pleasant aspect of having cats. Even still, cats are wonderful. They're so beautiful. I love them for their funny antics. They're constant entertainment (when they're not climbing the curtains). A plastic bag will keep them going for hours and keep us amused too. They have yet to catch one rat from the garage, although they want to go out and in and out and in to the garage every ten minutes. Well, once they caught a mouse. It was probably Wompers. He left it under the couch, decapitated.
Victor, the George Carlin had me cracking up and the surfing dog had me crying. Two great videos. Thanks.
BTW Shadow is on my lap now. Photo: Cleo in sun.
Great comparison, Harp. And a great pic!
They ruined a set of sheer ones. The only other curtains we have are very heavy and they don't bother with them.
I've heard of that dog Faith. What an inspiring story she has!
Victor, this made me think of you. "An Engineer's Guide to Cats" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHXBL6bzAR4
I've seen that. Cute!
My cat Salem cuddles with you when you're sick. I think animals just know these things.
So does Crash.
Yes, dogs & cats have a sixth sense, so do pigs, (yes pigs), they are very intelligent!
Edit: Or should I say 'gifted' ☺

My dog runs and hides if I cry. The cats don't care one way or the other.
There ya go! ...I make my case, (lol!)
We used dogs in |Customs to look for illegal drugs but they weren't pets, they were treated differently, they were 'working dogs'... Not pets. - Big difference.
Mine, I trained with hand signals, he was an excellent dog, but he was owned by Uncle Sam. - and once their time is up, 'their time is up', they are burned out, too fizzed out from our training to lead any kind of 'normal' home life.
My dog does several tricks with hand signals. Uh oh. What do they do with the dogs once 'their time is up'? Wait. I don't think I want to know.
Some go into an adoption program, usually in conjunction with the state/ municipality that they are located in, with the new owner cautioned that certain stimuli can make them very aggressive and/ or excited. Others are too 'hyper' to be adopted.
When I took my cocker spaniel to obedience class when I was 11, we progressed from voice commands to hand signals. Has everyone watched the shows a TV where they do jumps & other activities with dogs. I forget the name of the type of training.
It's Agility training...amazing what they can get them to do!
Okay . . . . I love cats - and I have waited my whole life to get a British Blue cat . . . as we are currently without a cat, maybe this will be my chance . . .
As for dogs - well, I like them if they look like a cat - so pomeranians are the dog for me. Alas, our little black pom, Zuzu died two years ago. We are currently looking for a little black pom - but I can't believe the prices for puppies!
We may have to go catless and dogless for a while yet.
Oh - all our cats have been extremely affectionate - even with strangers! They have also been outdoor cats (litter boxes only under extreme winter conditions). All lived very long lives (15 years or more).
Thanks Ronnie--I couldn't remember the term for those dogs.
Did you see this??? Amazing!!.

that bird is smarter than some people i know!
Yes, puts the dogs and cats to shame too. lol Maybe I should get a bird?!
How funny!
No wonder why they named her Einstein. I'd love a cockatiel.
I had a friend that had a cat and a cockatiel. The cat would walk around with the bird sitting on his head. Pretty cute.
Cockatiel envy??
OMG, Victor---you are bad! We had 2 cockatiels living next door---they screeched a lot! Now those neighbors have an African Grey parrot---Charlie does a wonderful imitation of a steam whistle----couldn't hear for an hour after he surprised me---he was behind a door!
Too funny Louise! I'd like to see that.
Poor Marilyn!
I am a dog person.. the answer to walking when it's below zero.. is a fence... a cat would never cuddle the way my pups do.. jockey for position most times.. Jily does not leave my side... ever!... either on my lap or next to it while watching tv.. and goes under the computer desk when I am here.. can't beat the rush to the door when going home either... no cat would ever do that.. fun watching them trying to get traction on the wood floor as they are trying to get to me so fast.. and it doesn't matter if it's 5 mins or hours... same result .. when I go to sleep both are on either side keeping me warm... I understand you can train a cat not to go on counters and things.. but I don't want to have that added problem.. besides Randy is deadly allergic to cats.. I don't want to be eating hair ... my dogs don't shed.. no problems with getting hair on your clothes
Two of my cats greet me when I come in and all THREE cuddle with me. When they hear the recliner, they immediately show up!
I had a cat that always greeted also. She was the coolest cat I ever had. I still miss her.
Just came in (from the brutal cold!) and Crash ran right over to me!
Osee looked out the door, turned around and made a beeline for the bed. He's no fool! It's brutal out there today.
Luckily - no wind.
Just got a package from FedEx. The cats must always come and investigate. If there's plastic invoved, they will lick it.
If I'm sitting at my desk, Cleo usually comes to sit on my lap and knead my chest. If I'm going to bed, Wompers likes to come sleep with me. Poor Shadow. Shadow wants to be under the blankets right up against me. Wompers will come and get comfy on top of Shadow (above the blankets), in the dip between me and Shadow, slowly sprawling out on top of him.. All the while, Shadow will be eeking out little growls, until finally, he gets fed up, and probably too hot, and ups and leaves the bed entirely.
