Cats vs. Dogs

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I think it's funny to hear my great big, black cat Allegro when he talks - he has this tiny delicate little mew.

Katie, my tortiseshell is like yors. Both my cats purr, when they get stroked, it gets even louder. Sometimes you can here them fromm across the room.

Victor, one of my cats senses thunderstorms be for they show up.

LOLOL! Just read this...Job Description for Cats
======================Been there, done all of it! Once I even had a cat who would routinely pee on me! Vet said it was b/c he loved me--was marking his territory. His displays of affection got him a new home. Phoebe always told me when a thunder storm was nearby--even if it wasn't a direct hit.

Yep, that's Salem! He hugs the ground and hides.

That video was from California.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Interesting. I think of this sort of in the same vein as animals sniffing out cancer. They can all do it. The trick is to communicate to them that we want them to tell us when they know.

My dogs have slept through earthquakes. Not sure yet about the cats.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

As a native Californian I can assure you that cats can and do sleep through earthquakes.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

You've all heard about the geologist who has been successfully predicting earthquakes for the last 20 years using cycles of the moon and lost ped ads, right? His name is Jim Berkland.

It makes perfect sense to me. If the moon controls the tides, then the pull must be pretty strong. And if animals' senses of sight, sound and smell are so many times stronger than ours, why wouldn't their other senses be so? I've always been surprised that he doesn't get more attention.

Yankeecat, :-)

I lived in Fairbanks and remember feeling the Anchorage earthquake of 1964. I was almost 5 at the time.

I know this thread isn't about goldfish, but I must remark that we had a goldfish who was literally digging in the sand at the bottom of his tank before the tremors hit. My family remarks on it to this day . . .

Animals definitely seem to have a sense.

See - no dogs called!!

Silly court people! The letter from the vet should help.

South Hamilton, MA

Don't be so sure J-2. This IS MA.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh yeah, I forgot. I don't think they're much better in OH.

I love all the comments.

This is a terrible photo because I am facing a bright window, but it seems that Carli wants to edit my posts.......

too cute!

Maybe she wants you on the pets forum!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yeah, I can't do the Pets Forum, because it makes me cry too often. Then, when I cry, I get sinusy and my eyes swell, and then I get a headache. So.....it's just not a healthy forum for me. LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I know how you feel. Way too many sad stories there. I could never work at a vet's.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I used to work for a vet. I loved the job! But I have to say, there were four different occasions that ripped my heart out. To this day I can cry just remembering. However, the good things FAR outweighed the bad.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Lots of sad things in the Pets Forum but also lots of great people and sometimes good advice.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

and sometimes very amusing stories on the Pets forum.

We just picked up MacKenzie - a little black pomeranian - 7 weeks old - a little brother for Alex the white pomeranian who is 5 1/2 months old. ^_^

How am I going to put this one in the dryer?

Awwwww, pics please! How is Alex doing btw?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

My kees loved the snow, too.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Alex is great! He is the prince of pups! He is paper trained, and he sits before he is fed or before we pick him up (no jumping on people!) He also lies down on command. He is not as certain to come when he is called if something else has his attention. He also likes to climb. For instance, he likes to climb the cushions behind our heads and rest there.

My daughter calls Alex the "cute, shy guy" and the new pup MacKenzie a "frat boy!" Alex was actually afraid of the new pup at first, but after 3 days he really enjoys playing with the puppy. The puppy is actually quite bold and stands up for himself, despite the fact that Alex is easily 3 times the size of MacKenzie!

Way too funny!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Enjoy!

Alex sounds like the perfect husband. ^_^

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Congrats on your new baby, Michaela! Can't wait to see photos of them both!

Sherrie - what a neat shot of your snow-loving pup!

Thomaston, CT

Yes---love to see the poms---is that a keeshund, Sherrie?

I think cats and dogs are both good but I've always had cats. The cat I have now is my baby and she is an indoor only cat, she sits in the window watching for me when it's time for me to come home, when she sees me get out of the car, she runs to the door to greet me. I am single and live alone, and when she greets me at the door or I can see her when I come home, I know it's safe to come in the house since she is terrified of others and hides if anyone else is in the house. If I wake up in the middle of the night and she is on the bed with me or I can hear her playing out in the living room, I know no one is in the house but us and I can go right back to sleep feeling safe. So she does protect me in her own way. I think I've learned alot from my cats through the years, like my cats, I am totally independent, I love to play, I can amuse myself, I enjoy my own company, I'm usually happy if I have food, drink, & a clean litterbox (toilet) and I love to snuggle with a blanket on the couch for a nap in the middle of the day, also like the outdoor cats I've had, I like to dig holes in the garden and spread fertilizer. We don't like mice in the house, snakes in the garden, or that pesky neighbor next door who always blasts his music in his car to disturb our peaceful and tranquil emvironment we've worked so hard to create.

Dogs can be great but I think I was a cat in another life. LOL!

Maybe one day I'll try a dog and find out how much they can teach me.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

DayBloomer - there are catlike dogs. My dogs are pretty much like that, as are my cats. They're sighthounds.

I love the image of your cat playing in the middle of the night. One of my "scaredy cats" (rescued semi-ferals) was crying in the middle of the night and I got up to find him holding a toy in his mouth and walking around telling everybody about it. it was pretty funny.

Thomaston, CT

That is funny---yes, you're right Katie---a think a whippet is very catlike---so is an Italian greyhound.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

How funny, Katie! Animals are awesome, aren't they?
