Rock Swap #2

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Beautiful. i think I see some Turquoise in there too.

Delicious pictures Creekside. Lots of jasper.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

OOP!!! Sharon will have trouble picking me up as I'm in Kentucky. I'm Hoping to be in Ventura in June, but that depends on if my son can find a decent price on air fare. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I will keep mine crossed for the cheap airfare marti.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I did find out the I can get a plane with a layover in Vegas. I could just take the plane to Vegas meet up with Sharon or someone else in the area that's headed for Oregon and ride to Oregon and take the bus back to Ventura. Thats my sons suggestion.

Wahoooo!!!! It's working. I'm getting cramps in my fingers, is it okay to uncross them?

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I've half uncrossed my fingers, but I'll keep them partly crossed until I'm on the plane.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well I think we can do that Marti but no smoking and I control the music. No fear, very mellow. No politics and no religion discussions. Just thought I would clear the air. Marti, do not be afraid, my nickname is Mother Winter., All, i want to talk about is the beautiful scenery, gardening and ROCKS. Creek side, you had better hid those rocks, especially the last photo. They are absolutely beautiful. OMG, I have never see anything like that. I might have to trade in my SUV and buy a truck to make it back to Nevada. Oh I am IN. My kids think this is great. You go mom, we will take care of dad, as if dad cannot take care of himself.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Creekside, what lovely collections of rocks. Alooooong time ago we used to take the kids and go rock collecting here in WA state. There was a nice petrified wood area just above the Columbia R. near Vantage, but that area has been closed for many years. We also used to go looking for agates along the beach near Eureka CA. Now I'm and old woman and the kids are grown and scattered around US.

Good news!! I can't be anywhere near smoking as after 22 years of smoking I now throw up at the smell of cigerettes and develop a massive headache. Cure: total black out room for three to four days. And than I just feel horrible for a week or two. Doctor says leave it to me to do something weird, like being nicotine poisoned.

Music: as long as you don't play rap or heavy metal we'll get along. Plus I can bring ear plugs if I have to.

Discussion: I don't talk about religion or politics either. I love sightseeing and talking about what I see. I like gardening and about the rocks found that day or day before or day before that. You get the picture.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

rutholive,

I hunted agates along the beaches in Trinidad Bay which is just north of Eureka, CA. It was great fun and beautiful rocks, polished by the sea and just alover the beach. Good driftwood also

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Sounds like we will do just great.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

My daddy said , that is two things you don't talk about "politics and Religion" Yep, Daddy was right.
Old women and rocks just sort of "go together" with this group, throw in a few plants and we are happy campers.

We don't smoke either. Who would want to talk anything but rocks and plants at a time like this? We like music, not the loud/mean stuff though.
Okay, so who is on the Rock Hunt list so far? : )
Me

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I'm a wanna be. That is for sure.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Put me on the list, I stayed up until after 1am last night reading stories about rock collecting site in Oregon. There is a Gem & Mineral Society that might be helpful as far as talking to actual people who have been too and dug at these sites. They will know which ones to recommend. Lynn do you have those BLM maps yet?

No worries Marti, no smoking here either, I don't even like it when I'm in a check out line at the store and I can smell it on someones clothes in front of me. I can hardly wait to get out of there.

I have a little pile of Jasper, that I haven't taken a picture of yet. I'm going out to do that now, More later....

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

The funny thing is I still would like to have a cigerette. Havn't had one since Oct 1979. But even the slightess smell of one and I am very physically ill. Almost to the point of being hospitalized. Every time I think about trying a puff, someone walks by with it on their cloths and I'm on the ground throwing up and develop light blindness. Even after all these years. It's called nicotine toxicity.
If I was in the middle of the Mojave desert in 120+ heat and my car broke down, I could not get into a smokers car. It will be better if I stay outside and fry.

In Calif, they do not permit smoking within 25 feet of doorways. Here in Kentucky, they still smoke in restrauants and standing in doorways. I have to be very careful not to breath around them.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Here is my little pile of Jasper:

I've had a hard time trying to send a picture of a little rock that I picked up by a lake where I go when roads are good. It had collected moss on the bank beside the road. I brought it home and have placed it under a fairly large glass cloche that I have had many years. Doesn't get enough light, but I am hoping to keep the moss alive till spring. Now I will try to send it along.

Well I still didn't get the picture I wanted, that one is of the rock under the cloche. Donna

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

It is not bad. If you want to gow the moss, Spray it with rainwater.
I have read you can put the moss and buttermilk in a blender and grow your own
moss on Rocks. have you tried it?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Here is the rock out of the cloche. Donna

rrm, thanks, no I haven't tried the moss & buttermilk.

I just wanted you all to see the pretty coloring of the rock. Donna

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

That is so pretty. I got to go get some om my mossy rock for you to see.
Thank you, Donna. May have to get brave and go get you a pic. Temp is
30 degrees right now. Brrrrrr. But I got to go feed the critters, it is getting
about that time.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

This is my Rose Quartz, which I love. I didn't pick these up myself. They were passed down from another rock collection, and the little round one, I bought. I don't actually know where a person could find these in the wild. That will be another research assignment.

Here are some that are out in the yard in piles. Red & Green jasper, quartz with crystals and something else, part of geode with crystal and some agate.
Creekside, I have contacted the BLM and will be receiving info in the mail. The below link is a very beautiful, interesting place. We could even reserve the Miners Meadow just for our group. Will look into what that costs and how many people. Gold panning, rocks (quartz, etc.), fishing.

Everything sounds great.

We are by far not finished looking for wonderful places to go. Keep watching for updates.
I have friends in Prineville that I will contact for more complete info. : )
We can do ocean beaches, desert, mountain and valley. All very close. : ) The wonderful Willamette Valley, everything is close. : )

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Creekside
Valleylynn
RRM
Marti
SharonWinter
Rutholive did you want to come?
Am I missing anyone? I don't want to leave anyone out.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Creekside Farm,
There's a few places in south central Colorado where rose quartz is so abundant one could haul truckloads out; likewise white marble.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Wow, Truckloads?

I'm on my way;^)

Love that stuff!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Here's a good sized piece of Mica from Colorado (about a foot long, 10" high and wide):

Reticulated Quartz from my collection.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

This photo was made into a framed pic in the computer room. I also sent it off to an internet site where they converted it into postage stamps that were worth like 35 cents a piece (few years ago). It has a couple of reticulated quartz, a triple phantom quartz, and a clear quartz.

Thumbnail by jmorth

jmorth, those are stunning. Where did you get those?

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

The largest crystal came from a rock dealer friend of mine, Larry Castle out of Austin, Tx., the triple phantom from a rock shop outside Mt. Ida, Ark., the clear one on the left came from a rock shop in Fla, and the reticulated cut triangle from a dealer at a rock show held in Springfield, Il. (15 mi N of me). Here's a close up of the reticulated cut quartz. The reticulated crystals captured within the clear quartz are elongated crystals of rutile.

Those are just beautiful!! The ones you said had been stamps look like Crystal Palaces, the Pryamid is great too. Do they shape those by hand? or are they machined? I used to work at a place that could machine metal parts on CNC's But I can't immagine them doing the crystals like that. They are so fascinating. Love them all.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, I would love to go on a rock collecting jaunt, but at my age 83, I have to be careful in my travels, and Oregon is many miles south of me. Let me know what the plans are as the time gets closer. I sure wouldn't want to drive much of any place right now. Snowed all day yesterday, heavy wet snow, about 5 inches. I still haven't gotten all my paths shoveled clean
