Oriental reds?

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

stormyla, I have Dynamite which are pink. That's what started this whole darn thread! They really are beautiful.

pirl, The Enabler. Sigh. Now I need an Invader too. I never really thought about combining DL's and lilies. Am I the last to think about that? Or maybe that's another thread...

Donna, since you and I are both in the Midwest, I would say that if you planted that sweet lily, it would look like my picture. I don't doctor them at all (my images). I will add that I have it in a not direct, hot sun spot to give the bloom the best chance of lasting. It has done well there over 4 years at least and when a lily is happy, I just leave it alone. It's a very nice color, coral-ish, I would put it in the same hue as 'Satisfaction', but lighter in color and a far better lily as the flower lasts days and days.

So I would put my 'highly recommended" stamp on that lily. The flower petals and leaves also have a unique, slightly wavy form to them.

stormyla - Yes! I did forget. Here it is now. Sorry!

McGlory - little by little I've been moving out the daylilies to make more room for lilies.

I like the combination of Daylilies and Lilies. Moby posted a photo over in our Midatlantic forum of her bed with that mixture that was just fabulous. Maybe Moby will post it here.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I helped plant Moby's bed! Of course, nothing was in bloom that November...

you guys are killin me.

Since I'm going to change some of the long garden at the back, now jam packed with daylilies, and add the B & D lilies I bought today, I'll take photos when it's in bloom.

I started a few weeks ago with another section, including our old bathroom sink, which will be a birdbath. I have Purple Prince lilies and Purple Sensation Allium (just planted) with yellow and purple daylilies at each side that have been there for many years.

Love the intensity of that one, Jack!

It is a beauty (from John Scheepers).

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

That's really pretty, jmorth.

Pirl, your bed looks so neat and clean for winter.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

stormyla - that's the way I like it - part of my OC I guess.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I haven't gotten that far yet this year and now Christmas is just round the corner. The leaves just now finished dropping. Here's one of my 7 piles to be mulched and the beds have to be gone through one more time.

Do you shred them and make compost with them? We do.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I dislike the winter garden ~ it looks like a canary graveyard. But I will be forever grateful and indebted to 5 wonderful DG'ers what came and helped me move my garden in November. I sure couldn't have dug, moved and replanted 300 plants in a day all by myself! Without all those hands, my garden would be a fraction of what it is now.

Yes Lori, you can plant your garden any way you want! Daylilies and irises are great for shading the base of lilies.

Pirl, less than an eighth of them get composted. There's just too many. I shread them for mulch for the back and side beds. But I top dress the beds before I mulch them.

Moby, that is really wonderful. That was how nice it felt at Critterologist's Crocus planting party. We had a great time. That is a lovely photo. Do you still have the one that showed your tall downward facing lilies among the lilies and daylilies?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I love, love, love those tall downward facing lilies. And I'd love to see the picture.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's such a beautiful sight, Moby. God bless all who helped you plant your new garden. That's a lot of hard work.

stormyla - Jack keeps bagging leaves and then chipping them. Last week he made a brand new bin of compost. We have two available for use right now, two he's adding to as he chips and we add kitchen waste, and two vacancies. I do add it to plants that enjoy the winter blanket.

This is not ours but a neighbor's version of what she considers to be a compost bin!

Making compost is a science and I do resent it when people say they use their compost "but it's not like yours". There shouldn't be any difference! It truly is science and not a trash pile as you can see here:

Well, I suppose it will become compost, eventually...

I think this is the pic that stormy liked (or something similar)

Lovely! What is the tall lily?

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Yes, I want to know what the tall one is too!

Silly Moby! I wasn't looking for kudos. I just don't remember moving lilies when we moved your garden. I remember a gazillion iris and daylilies. Did you move the lilies later?

What struck me funny is that I didn't think about DL's and lilies together necessarily and if anyone should have thought of it, it should have been me after seeing your garden more than once. :-) And then pirl had that fabulous picture of Salmon Star with Invader and my heart skipped a beat.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Moby, LOL That's NOT it, but KEEP posting them. Each one is better than the next. That one is VERY beautiful!!! LOL

They look like Regal Lilies

LOL Like I said, they just keep getting better and better!!!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Pirl, I plan to completely overhaul my compost building this year. I'm not producing enough. But I take it very seriously.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

LOL Thanks for all the nice comments. The lily in question is Ortega and was about 6 ft. this year.

McGlory, you really have no idea how thankful I still am, so kudos all around! I don't remember a whole lot from that day either. LOL I do remember feeding the troops, and that I had to run to the store at least a couple times to get more bags ~ they came 50 to a bundle and that's how I know 300 plants were moved.

Pink Perfection was another nice tall trumpet this year

Moby, they are all so wonderful. Your gardens must be the pride and joy of your neighborhood.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I planted African Queen & Regale last fall. Their first year performance was underwhelming.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Similar experiences here, stormyla. The second year they were better.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Pirl. I'm hoping. The soil and conditions where they are, are not the best. But I had others along there do much better in their second year.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I know you don't care for pink, Mary, but Silk Road has been a wonderful performer for me, in the downward facing tall ones. Antoher one is Luminaries. And a yellow I can't recall the name of from The Lily Garden. I was not thrilled with Arabesque and Radiance also from The Lily Garden, but it could just be first year performance like you said. The one I want for this year is Ice Caves.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Polly. I'll have to look at those.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

The lily I couldn't remember from The Lily Garden is Catherine The Great. It's a beautiful, very tall white and yellow. It was driving me nuts, so I had to go find the name.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

My grandmother grew Regal Lilies. We are talking 70 years ago because I had a picture of myself at 3 years ,standilg in the row.
She saved all the bulblets and planted them in another row.The rows began to look like a growers field, she just didnt have the heart to waste the little ones
I dont find them as interesting as lilies with color.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Thank you Tracy. Vice Versa is on my list. B&D has it, and so will I.
