Oriental reds?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Judith listed "The Vamp" in her Orange and Red Asiatic lily section in the 2002-03 catalog. But she describes it as an Easter lly hybrid. This is what she wrote in the catalog:

"The Vamp" is the deepest red Easter Lily hybrid we've ever seen, an intense, non-fading red with hints of burgundy. Its deep color and velvety nectaries add to its "over the top" allure, reminding us of the thrilling seductresses of the earliest movies. 3 to 5 feet, late June.

DonnaMack's photo looks exactly like the one in the catalog. Since it is definately a cultivar different from Vamp, perhaps you, Moby, should be bartering for a scale or two for your err, you know what garden.

(Putting the old catalog away now. They come in handy sometimes!)

Thank you so much Pard!

So Donna, you sweet li'l sugar plum you....

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

McGlory, 'Rio Negro' is the reddest Oriental I've grown, at least that's what it's supposed to be. The pics from B&D look to have a narrow white edge to the petals, and mine don't- a solid burgundy-red. These came from Touch of Nature-eflowergarden. I never could get an accurate pic of them, but you can get an idea from this.

If you're looking for a truer red with Oriental shape and fragrance, perhaps you should consider OTs. Most have a contrasting margin, but there are some good reds. This is my favorite, American Journey.

Mar, you're a darling!

Oh wow, Pard, I just found my 2002/3 catalog, and you are absolutely right. I generally keep catalogs I order from, unless they are duplicates. The lily is described as "new" but it was never offered again to my knowledge. I never would have found it. First I had the wrong company, and now I realize it's a hybrid.

This is such fun. I catalog every lily. Gotta change my labels.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Hmmm... and if Moby barters for The Vamp, I'm in luck because I know where her garden is. :-)

Rio Negro has been on my greed list for some time, but I don't know why I haven't gotten it yet. Perhaps it's the one to replace the Dynamite too-pinky-red Orientals.

If anyone else is looking for a good Oriental red, Arabian Nights is great, but I must have have taken any photos.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

I think this is Arabian Red.

This is what I was told about Bacardi
"lovely deep red and the colour doesn't fade about 4 feet tall"

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ya know, Satisfaction seemed to fade for me the very first year it bloomed, but this past year (it's second in my garden) it held its color just fine. Most likely because we had a really cool July and August... When it first opens it really does knock ones socks off. :)

Everyone, I wanted to let you know that, reminded by Rick, I have asked Admin to remove the image of The Vamp (the red one) from the description of Vamp (the orange one that was correctly posted.

Thanks Rick!

I find Arabian Red to be more Fuschia than red and I love Rio Negro, but again it comes out Magenta for me. Satisfaction is a pale pink in my garden. The only one of these that is consistantly deep vivid red is my favorite, American Journey

Is the difference in soil the cause of color change in lilies?
My Satisfaction is coral color. It doesnt age well though.
Turns brownas it ages.

It looks the same as everyone else's on the pant files and the pic posted on B&D lilies

Here are my Satisfactions.
They bloom for about a week and then darken as the edges of the petals turn brown.
I just cut them off when they dont look great anymore.I have other OT 's that I like better,Shout,Red Dutch.
This is a collage from 2008 their first year.
You can also see some beetle dammage on the petals.
I was very aggressive with Sevin and Bayer this year and had very little damage.
I have aded another 150 bulbs for 2010 and will have to be on my toes.
OOOPS thats not it.
I dont like the Picasa upgrade features that make me guess which file in the list is actually the collage.

You might be getting some damage on the flowers from the seven itself, or the Bayer(if you over apply it). Some hybrids are just more vigorous or better looking (after flowering). It may just be that. Or if the soil there is heavier, that could be a problem.

Re Picasa: I haven't used it, so I am just guessing here, but usually a file can be renamed by right clicking.

On DG, you are able to reload a different pic if you notice it's not the one you want. Use the back button and rebrowse your image. But you have to "back button" from the preview screen with the thumbnail. If you do further changes, and the preview has no thumbnail, it won't work.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

We have heavy soil and the second year Satisfaction bloomed it was great.
I spray the emerging lilies and the ground around the stems in early spring to kill any emerging larvae.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Ge, Your Satisfaction has a deeper color than any of those in PlantFiles. If you have a good photo, you should post it there.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I will see what I have from this year.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Stormy ~ the other pics in the PF look fine but yours looks more like Red Hot and not Satisfaction.

How do I start a thread for the Satisfactions?
SITEADMIN are the only people who can post.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure what you mean ~ anyone can start a new thread. On the Lily Forum general page, under the 'Communities' tab is "post a new thread". Click on that.

Hi doridunn, welcome! What is your fav there... Kentucky?

Ge, Are you talking about posting a photo or starting a thread?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I dont know how to do it.
I went there and only SITEADMIN can post thyere.
I tries going to "post a new thread" and it didnt work.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

HELP I dont know how to submit a picture for plant files.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Moby, I do have a Red Hot, but it's in another area. I have several clumps of Satisfaction. They were purchased at different times from different vendors and they all look the same. I only ever purchased 3 bulbs of Red Hot. Let me look through my photos and see if I can find others of another clump of Satisfaction. If it was just that one, maybe I mislabeled a bulb. But there are many of them.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Ge, go to the plantfiles page and scroll down to the bottom of the page. On the left you'll see a blurb "upload an image of this plant." Click it and go from there.
