Oriental reds?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I see you as a magnificant trio. All three of you are great. I've become a much more avid collector, and gained so much knowledge, since I joined the peony and lily forums and had the advantage of being guided by the most patient of gardeners.

And the roses have gotten much easier. Quadra, the Canadian Explorer? You throw it up there and it takes over! Red lilies? That takes skill.

Ooo, maybe you can help me with roses, Donna. I want one with a super heady fragrance, blooms spring through fall and is thornless. Is that asking too much??

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

No, not at all! Zephirine Drouhin. It was recommended to me at the beginning of my rose growing by a real rosarian. I was concerned beacuse it's often rated zone 6, but it has sailed through six zone 5a winters on the north side of my yard.

It can be grown as a shrub or a climber. As a shrub, it basically forms a big fountain. It has two sports, both softer in color. It's an old Bourbon rose, from 1868.

That puppy is thornless? :) Well, well, well.... ;) LOL

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

You can cut it to the ground in spring, and it forms new growth faster than you can blink and blooms. An oldie but a goodie.

ABSOLUTELY. Not kind of thornless. Not a few thorns. Thornless. Scent will knock your socks off. Want a softer color? Kathleen Harrop, a softer pink, and Martha, more like a cream color.

Check out the number of buds.

Oh Donna, you're such a little enabler! :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Well dang, I'm just about sold. Thanks!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I am BAD!! But you asked for it! It blooms until frost. And if it warms up again, as it did this year, it starts growing again. If I sold the house and moved elsewhere (heaven forbid) it would be one of the first roses I would get.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You see we all count on each other in the different enabling areas, don't we now? Donna, I may just have to get one of your preferred roses.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I was given a gift certificate for WFF and am looking at their strawberries and Cream asiatic collection.
Has anyone had experience with this.?
I quit WFF because their plants are small and expensive for what you get and usually didnt survive the first year. The 3 reviews of the lily collection are 2 to 1 positive.
The one neg. put me off by stating the mix had no whites and the other colors were alike. Its a 25 bulb mix.
I am sure I can get BuggyCrazy bulbs for less.Maybe I will just get a hosta and be done with it.
Let me know in any event.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I believe the Strawberry and Creme collection comes from the Lily Garden (WFF gets them direct from her), so it should be a very nice collection.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks I didnt realize that.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Several of their lily bulbs come from her.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I actually got my first Rosepoint Laces and Ariadnes from TLG via WFF years ago. I didn't know any better, or I would have directly supported TLG. I also got all of my Casa Blancas from WFF. They were offering 12 for a ridiculously low price. All of the bulbs were excellent. I find that sometimes WFF sends the wrong color, but the bulbs and peonies (and I can only vouch for those two categories) were very fine,at least as of my last order of two years ago.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I had ordered Penstamons ,for a dear price and they were rotting when I got the wee things. I dosed them with lots of water and fed them ,they died anyway. I find their plants are too small. This is just my experience. If others have had good experiences with WFF then their quality is uneven and I just got the bad end of the card draw.
I ordered a Poppy collection 5 years ago, only 1 plant of 3 ever made it.
They used to be good at quality of plants until they wer bought out.
I wouldnt do business with them anymore, there are other nurseries with bigger better plants for a few dollars more,I also live in an area where there is a nursery around everycorner.
How can I go wrong with Bulbs from WFF.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Wow, That is one densely populated Daylily bed. I like the look of it with those lilies popping up in the middle. Kind of reminds me of how I feel somedays. LOL

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Head and shoulders above the rest? ;)

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

No Moby, just wierd and standing out!!! LOL But the lilies do look lovely in that bed.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Welcome back, Anita!

Sorry to hear about your brother.

Planning a Borglums trip in the spring?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I need to go to Borglums Its a hour trip I dont know why I havnt gone.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Polly, Nope no trips to see them this year, I need to win back my gardens, I done nothing in any of them all of 2009, they are a mess. The only pic I took was of a tree frog in one of my daylilies, it was a bad, bad year, I will get tons of pics this year:)

Anita, Birds of a feather..........

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Anita, good to see you back! Your Lilies will be amazing this year, I've been amazed how they can tolerate neglect. I had Orientals planted at my Mother's house several years ago, and could hardly believe my eyes a few years later when I went to dig them up. They had multiplied like mad growing though sod!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The will to live is amazing

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi Neal, Thank you, It feels good to be back, A feeling I have missed so much:).
I sure hope so, as I said I had done nothing, Time to turn that boat around:)Anita

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Yup, turn that boat around, Anita.

Maybe the next year Jo and I could meet you at Borglums, then. Jo Ann is going to love Dana, he's such a nut. And maybe you can keep up with him. I sure can't. Of course he's only like late 70s. Maybe in his 90s he'll slow down.

Make sure to stick with us, Anita. And can't wait to see your lily pictures!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

lets make a plan

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

That sounds like a very good plan, 2011 peak bloom at Borglum's, I have not been to see Dana in a few years, I need to do so,I have no clue what site I was looking at the other day (not Borglums), but they had one of Dana's Iris intros for sale, I was very impressed to see that. I wonder how many Daylilies he has now? & Peonies & Hosta, Oh, Yes we need to do this:)Anita

This is the only pic other than my Grandson I took in 2009

Can we do it 2010?
I need dwarf iris and maybe some hostas.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

He has some beautiful dwarf irises he hybridized himself but never named. He sells them by the whole clump. I don't know what he has for hostas. I can do 2010 Jo Ann, and then we'll have Anita meet us 2011, unless she wants to just go and meet us 2010.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

That's a beautiful Daylily.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Anita, if it was a sib it might have been my website. I'm going to carry all of his, some this year and some next. Dana doesn't like to do mail order, although he will, and he's really wonderful at it, sends huge clumps. He knows I'm going to carry them, and approves. I need to get pictures of some though, and have sent divisions to Boojum, who is going to photograph them for me.

His sib intros are wonderful, and need to be more widely distributed.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Nope, I can't find it now either, I have looked & looked, you don't even come up when I search for his stuff? I don't get it, I know I just looked at it in the past few days.

I doubt very much I could do 2010, we will see what May-June holds for me, but right now it don't hold enough money to say yes. :(Anita

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

You don't need money. You don't need to buy anything at Danas, and I'll gladly buy lunch.
