Hi Carol, the last two are endemic Hawaiian plants.
I was clearing weeds for a neighbor yesterday.
I'm going to try and hang my ridge-beam today. Will post a photo when that's up.
Over Hill, Over Dale, Gypsies hit the dusty trail....
I have a monthly plant allowance, he has a monthly hot rod allowance! LOL
and yes I had a lot of croton starts and not a single one took. stupid plants! LOL
Don't you need help with that ridge-beam?
Trina, that red brom looks really nice.
This is probably a bad time of year to start Croton cuttings in your area. Waiting till Spring when the plants get in rapid growth would be better.
Take the top eight inches of a branch that is just making a new bud. Trim the leaves off the bottom half of the cutting and stick that in your sterile growing medium. Keep the cuttings warm but in the shade. Soil moist but not soaking wet. In a few weeks they will start throwing roots.
well if I can get the plant shelves in the front finished this weekend that would be awesome then I can take pictures of them all together for you to see.
this was earlier in the summer and I'm fresh out of places to get croton cuttings, they don't exactly grow around here at all Dave...LOL, But I will try again next spring if I find someone else who has some to trade with!
Yes Carol, I will need help with the ridge beam. I'll be using a ladder, as I am not tall enough to reach the place it needs to be. I'll be setting the boards up on a few supports, so it won't be so difficult to place it.
Kea will be their for moral support.
so will we Dave!
awesome Julie!
I love the way it cut off his head. (not).
He was a radio operator in WWII. One of the Red Raider group.
Anyone have a story to tell? I can tell Bill's Dad's story:
He was Navy. On the USS Underhill, which was a destroyer escort ship. It was the 1st ship to be bombed by a kamikaze sub, 2 weeks before the USS Indianapolis. It was classified information for a long time.
His Dad (and the other survivors) floated in the water for a long time before they got picked up. He did what Bill is doing in this picture.
A couple years ago we went to Albany, NY on our way to Fenway Park and got a special tour of the USS Slater, which is the last DE of that class still afloat. Teeny tiny ship, and they lived on it for months at a time.
Oh, Venice... you're welcome! I saw them and said to myself "yes!!" I bought one for myself, too.
DH's mom got us one from QVC 2 days later. When it rains, it pours!
Great picture Lynnie. Was he in WWII?
Now Lynnie's photo gotta be Air Force.
Actually, Dave, my dad was Army, but on a plane. He was in the 408th Squadron of the Red Raiders stationed in N. Africa & Okinawa. I have a lot of pictures of "nose art", the pinup girl type stuff they put on the planes.
That sure is a bunch of fancy brass!
I have my dad's medals, I actually got them from the army after he died, I wrote to them & imagine my surprise when they sent them to me!
That was the "Joint Chiefs of Staff", when I was in the Army.
Sounds like your Dad got to do a lot of traveling.
I googled the ship on the side of Lynnie's picture. It was a training ship for various exercises, so I guess only Lynnie can answer that!
I know what branch of service my grandfather was in and what wars but no one knows anything else it was all classified
He did a bit. One of the guys in his group kept a diary, and one of the other guys' son sent me a copy of it. It was very interesting to read this guys entries from day 1 to when he finally made it home. Because they were a bomber group, they would set up camps in different places and then go out on a mission, go back to base for a few days, play cards, etc... pack up & go on to the next camp...
What was really weird was reading him playing cards with my dad, or they would pool their rations and make dinner, little esoteric things like that.
I have my dad's photo album from the war, so I was constantly going between the 2, checking out the guys and places, putting names to everyone in the stories.
Bill's great-grandfather was one of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. There's a huge portrait of him in my MIL's living room in his uniform. I hope she gives it to him someday, he's the only one interested in that stuff in his family.
This is Bill's dad, he's definitely Navy.

Sorry guys, the picture didnt turn out very well. I think yall can still see him though, after it's enlarged.
Wow Dixie. Do you know where he was? In the Pacific? (Bill is asking ~ this is his favorite subject) A medic - that's tough. A friend of ours was a medic in Viet Nam. He's now an Art Therapist at the VA hospital here in Buffalo.
You favor him, for sure!
God Bless them all. As Olaf Fub says - 'say a prayer for our guys over there'. Past and present!
wow we come from good looking stock *grin*
my father was in the korean war, trianed fighter pilots, and was later CMS in the Air Force reserves. Now my brother holds that title.
I apologize for going off-topic, but it's Veterans Day.
we got moved here because we're never on topic....LOL
And now I have to go make chicken salad.
What? No meat & potatoes, you ask? Well there's chicken (I made sure it wasn't any of Lester's friends) and a loaf of bread.
I'll look forward to catching up later, have a good night!
I elbowed my way through all the crotons!
Great pics Guys. So many fine military men. I do not have pictures of my parents in uniform. My dad was a radio communications officer in the Philippines during WW2 and my mom was Army Nurses Corp stationed at Ft Benning, at the hospital there in Ga. That is where they met and married.
Smiley it never occured to me to google that ship.....(smacking head)
He has passed. But I do remember him saying that they were in New Guinea. And I know as well that he was also in Australia a short time before they went some where else. To make a long story shorter, the Aussies thought he was an old western Movie actor named Randolf Scott. Dad would sign autographs pretending to be him. Grin......It was something he never talked of. He was called jungle Jim by his buddies. Which a lot of them traveled long distances to be at his funeral. It was so touching. I remember my grand mother his mother saying that they were in a lot of jungles. And that he had seen some horrible things. As I'm sure a lot of them did. He was sick with Malaria for a long time after he got home. Such a good and decent man, loved his family. Wow! I didn't mean to write a book! Still miss him though.
I wish I get info on my grandad but they won't give it up
Today is a day to remember the past and present. My sister and I went to the grave site today to visit him and mom a while. Had our umbrellas and a few laughs recalling some of the things they did, and would say. When we would have a big family get together he would tell all of us kids, nieces, nephews, cousins to line up so he could see who was the ugliest. All of us little idiots would form a line. And he would just laugh.
Why cant you get information on your grand dad Trina?
