He was Navy. On the USS Underhill, which was a destroyer escort ship. It was the 1st ship to be bombed by a kamikaze sub, 2 weeks before the USS Indianapolis. It was classified information for a long time.

His Dad (and the other survivors) floated in the water for a long time before they got picked up. He did what Bill is doing in this picture.

A couple years ago we went to Albany, NY on our way to Fenway Park and got a special tour of the USS Slater, which is the last DE of that class still afloat. Teeny tiny ship, and they lived on it for months at a time.
