Coffee Break #22 - NY Rules!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - that's a long walk too, Joyce. I remember '77 well. My dad and I ran up to the roof when our lights went out. We got there just in time to see all the city lights go out - really weird!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor you can go to the Christmas Tree shop and get suet for 89 cents .. some were a dollar...but that's the cheapest we found

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

We have a wild bird store here too, pricey as well, but they have a lot of specialty stuff like you said Dahlianut, they also do the same thing here with the newsletters. Hard to find those insect suets here unless I get them online...

- Don't remember the 77 blackout too well, did'nt affect me that much. (lol)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Prayers for my mom please, she was rushed to the hospital tonight with acute renal failure.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Sending prayers your way Jen--I hope by the time you read this she is doing better.....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

best thoughts & prayers to your Mom Jen

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry to hear that Jen, best wishes.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh - thoughts and prayers your way, Jen. Good luck.

I'll have to look into the Christmas Tree store.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

My sincerest wishes for a speedy recovery Jen.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hugs and well wishes Jen.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

hope the best for your mom jen!

I just get suet at HD with peanut butter in it - they do not last long out there

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Praying for your mom, Jen.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I used to make my own suet--easy, and the birds loved it!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks all.
Waiting to hear from my sis today.

phoebe, do you have to cook it?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

don't have to.. if it's over 70 raw beef suet will go rancid .. if you render it .. the melting point gets higher and will last longer

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I remember my mom used to get trim the fat off the meat she was cooking for dinner and throw it on the front lawn in the winter, the birds would go nuts for it.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh yeah.. that's good stuff.. even bacon fat!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Yup--cooked it and then froze it after mixing. Then just go to your freezer to re-supply the birds.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Bears like the smell of bacon & meat too... good thing I don't have bears. (lol)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I came across a fresh bear track while hiking yesterday. A bit unnerving.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

They have a full grown one in one of the county parks here that has a zoo/ rehab center for animals. I saw him up close, right up against the glass... the size of a Volkswagen, paws, teeth, claws, more claws, everything size X-large! I hear they can run too! lol!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I always joke when hiking with a group that I will run if I see a bear. Someone will always say that you cannot outrun a bear. I then reply that I don't have to - I just have to outrun the slowest one in the group!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Lol! good one!

Thomaston, CT

Jen, hope your Mom is doing OK---very hard not being able to do something. Victor, you are sooooo bad! I haven't put suet out yet because I'm afraid it will attract the bears. I usually put out the peanut one---the woodpeckers seem to love it.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Squirrels here love the suet I think they ate more than the birds.

Victor, while you're out hiking this time of year, I hope your wearing bright orange

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No hunting allowed where I hike, Jen.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Victor! That does not stop the hunters! I used to live where there was no hunting, and yet, every fall, plenty of hunters would hunt on private property! You could even look out the window and see them! And hear the guns...wear bright colors.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okay, thanks. I'll wear electric pink!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Cool! Goes great with those blonde curls! LOL!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Would have! ^_^

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

oh dear....
Well, also looks good with the alternatives, all of which fit into the catagory of 'alive and well'!! ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thoughts and prayers for your mom flowerjen.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bald and pink has a nice appeal.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I think so too!

South Hamilton, MA

Jen--thinking of you & your mom

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I will never fully understand why this species is so bent on killing off it's own....It is humanity's fatal flaw.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Such a horrible tragedy. And it's looking more and more like another avoidable one.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wishing you all the best Jen.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

My new reblooming German iris still has its last flower hanging buy a thread. It started reblooming in Oct. Made me very happy!
