that recipe sounds so yummy, Jaye, I'm wishing someone else here liked split pea soup! it's a soup day, been spitting rain-drizzling-light off and on rain all day here. Ida's heavy rains arrive tonight. our county is under flash flood advisory until Thurday night.

well, after lunch I spread that load of manure on the new iris rows. It was not as black as I thought. but it had been composting - their older pile was still steaming! Got it spread and now hope the rains from Ida will rinse it a bit before tilling in. Returned home to use up all the remaining light potting up irises. DD brought out a hot cup of tea - bless her! stowed away things from the storm, came inside, sliced up a pork loin, slathered it with barbeque sauce, and stuck it in the oven with baking potatoes. now just sitting here stiffening up. LOL but have on dry clothes, rinsed off muck before cooking, and have a refill cup o tea here.

Sounds good Jaye, I love split pea soup!

You women with daughters are soooo lucky. I miss the closeness I had with my mother...

Trisha, when Sandy emailed me that, I thought of you and Laura right away!
But I'm a meat in the soup kinda gal.
Made some cream of chicken noodle soup tonight with egg yolk pasta and store bought baked chicken. Threw some diced cabbage in, and as a thickener, a pack of mashed potatoes flakes. Not bad...

I'm off to bed... another day at PILs tomorrow. Good night everyone.

I've been looking into rice cookers, just don't know what I want. There are just the 2 of us so don't want a big one, and one I can afford. I didn't realize they did more than cook rice, duh how come I didn't know that. Have priced a few at Wal-Mart so far. Anyone have any suggestions?

Still feels like summer here, but I like it, in the mid 70's. At least you can get out and do some yard work without having heat stroke. Just put 6 brug cuttings in their temp. homes and hope I have good luck with them all. Went to Lowe's with gardening in mind and only ended up with a large bag of potting soil. Keeping the pine needles in mind for mulch now.

Oh forgot to say I did try the vicks on the soles of my feet too and I didn't cough all night either. Great stuff! I used to put it in the vaporizer at night when my kids were small.

Morning everyone! Coffee is ready, and I have oatmeal with raisins ready!
Jaye that soup sounds good! It would be good with a ham bone in there for a different flavor!
Hope everyone got a good nights sleep! I will be gone tomorrow and Friday. I have to go see my back Dr, and have him check out my back, to see if this knee problem is from the back.
Y'all be good, and I will be back later.

Morning Glories! Sun's up somewheres! Randall's got the coffee on!

and, since I live with one, Happy Veteran's Day! Hope y'all will join me in honoring our veterans, old and new, today. Think it'll be Gunpowder tea, Pomegranate White Tea, and Blueberry Tea this morning. That should cover red, white, blue, and soldiers!

it's raining steady. Heard last night we're having "third daughter," Ruth's friend Jess, move in tomorrow, possibly for some time. John's new contract ended and he's been offered another at some distance. Jess, 17, won't get up on time, not for school.

It's been a long time since she's lived here. Her "room" = my office with bed moved in. It's become the junk room. Looks like the Dear Lord sent me a rainy day and school holiday to get that room straightened up with Ruth's help! YAH! I'd like to be able to get to my own printer again! and later, I insist she help Ruth and I in the garden! All right! more help!

Ruth has joined the Continental Army!

ah! taters, we cross posted! I'd love oatmeal and raisins this drippy morn. took me too long to type mine in, Randall is grousing over the soaked paper! LOL what ya doing this morning? Hope that back does ok for you.

Jaye, you've probably forgotten all the times you fought with your mom. believe me, when Jess arrives, it always gets worse here for that. I'm not looking forward to it.

Just sitting here, catching up on the threads, having another cup of coffee. I checked the lotto numbers for last night, but no winners here. It says some one from out of state hit the $77 Million! Oh well, maybe next time?
Sounds like you will be busy getting the bedroom ready for your new guest? Nice of you to take her in. Is she a relative?
My hubby is a veteran also, but yesterday we got a phone call from his Sister, and was told he lost a cousin in the Afghanistan war! He will be home sometime next week for the funeral. I can't imagine what his parents are going through, I know it will be tough.
So today we pray for all the lost ones, and families in all the wars! Our flag is proudly displayed in the front yard!
We salute you all!

Morning ladies..

I talked with Kathy yesterday at 3:00. The Dr. wouldn't let her go home because she hadn't eaten. The anesthesia upset her stomach, but she said she did eat lunch and that was staying down okay. She was sitting in a chair when I talked to her. She said she can tell the pain in her back is much better. So glad she came through it all okay. She said the Dr. was coming back so maybe she did get to go home. She said she'd call me when she got home and got settled in. I think I will hear from her today, so if I do, I'll let you know.

I'm off to my DD Lisa's house for some quality bonding time. She is off for Veteran's day and she's baking and testing recipes for Thankgiving. Everyone else is at school, so I'm really looking forward to spending a few hours with her.

Have a wonderful day, all!

Raleigh, NC

thanks Joyce! you've reminded me to test this recipe for spoiled fruit cake - I haven't used it on this coast before.

editted - Ruth and I just made a new banana oatmeal nut bread recipe instead. I'm a very bad at having her "help" by doing the grunt work of cooking. I forget hands-on DOING is better practice, better for learning. I did the grunt work, she did the mixing this time.

walked into the kitchen and saw those blackening 'nanas on the counter. Halfway into the process realized we don't have enough eggs for both that and the cake recipe, low on milk and sugar, too. Darn! Instead of potting irises before this storm, I should have been shopping. Wind is gusting up high, but I'd better head to the store now.

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him. The waitress asks them for their orders.

The man says, 'A hamburger, fries and a coke,' and turns to the ostrich, 'What's yours?'

'I'll have the same,' says the ostrich.

A short time later the waitress returns with the order 'That will be $9.40 please,' and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment.

The next day, the man and the ostrich come again and the man says, 'A hamburger, fries and a coke.'

The ostrich says, 'I'll have the same.'

Again the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change.

This becomes routine until the two enter again. 'The usual?' asks the waitress.

'No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato and a salad,' says the man.

'Same,' says the ostrich.

Shortly the waitress brings the order and says, 'That will be $32.62.'

Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table.

The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer. 'Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?'

'Well,' says the man, 'several years ago I was cleaning the attic and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there.'

'That's brilliant!' says the waitress. 'Most people would ask for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!'

'That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there,' says the man..

The waitress asks, 'What's with the ostrich?'

The man sighs, pauses and answers, 'My second wish was for a tall chick with a big butt and long legs who agrees with everything I say.'

TRULY A FEMALE JOKE!!!

A woman was sitting at a bar enjoying an after work cocktail with her girlfriends when Steven, a tall, exceptionally handsome, extremely sexy, middle-aged man entered. He was so striking that the woman could not take her eyes off him.

This seasoned yet playful heartthrob noticed her overly attentive stare and walked directly toward her. (As any man would.) Before she could offer her apologies for staring so rudely, he leaned over and whispered to her , "I'll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for $20.00...on one condition...."

Flabbergasted but intrigued, the woman asked what the condition was. The man replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."

The woman considered his proposition for a moment, and then slowly removed a $20 bill from her purse, which she pressed into the man's hand along with her address. She looked deeply and passionately into his eyes, barely concealing her anticipation and excitement, and slowly and meaningfully said....

And I need him now, think I can dig up a $20. After cleaning my house he will never use that line on any woman again. Will have learned his lesson.

Kathy got home late yesterday afternoon. She's doing much better. She said thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.

Had fun with Lisa. We made pumpkin pie bites and raspberry cake balls dipped in chocolate. Oh man, can that girl bake!!!

Hope you're all having a wonderful weekend.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

So glad to hear she is home, and hopefully resting! Still sending prayers for a super quick recovery!
Good night all.

Hi everyone...Just going to make this very quick copy and past because Im exhausted.
...I promise to come and visit properly tomorrow.

Hahaha, Cindy That was hysterical! I got 20 bucks, wheres that cutie....lol although I'd have him lug my laundry up and down stairs!!

This is a story I was honored to hear and witness BJ, Love you and miss you.
Big Sister Dusty, I just love you...I hope I hope remembered it correctly. Hi Joyce.
Anyway, Im a bit emotional tonight. I watched The movie Taking Chance. It made me think of a lot of people. I cried for the families who have lost sons or daughters in wars of past and of this time too. Personally, I am saluting Families and especially all who have fallen for the well being of People...I would Say Thank you with all my soul to all of our Troops.

I am quite sure there are so many DG members who have family and friends. There is one incredible lady I know as DustyDS.
This movie made me think of the remarkable memories of all the soldiers she has personally taken the time to record of their happening.
Here is one story, that I can only tell you by what I saw.
When I went on the Sistah trip to BJ in Texas. There, I sat in complete awe with tears streaming down my face as I heard The story of How Dusty was the commanding officer who happened to have BJ's, I believe brother in her troop. BJ's Brother was killed in the war and the family didn't know if he was alone, or quite what happened. Well, when everyone learned about Dusty, BJ was put in touch with her.
Guess what, Dusty in fact was with her brother and held him, as he went home. She made it a point to do this with all her beloved soldiers, kept a complete record of their incidents...Dusty gave Brenda and her family closure, after so many years they knew their loved one was not alone...She has put many a peoples mind at Ease. and today, I am especially proud to have seen and felt that love so pure, I am racked with sobs. The Heartfelt Hugs i witnesses from Dusty to Brenda "ordered" to be given by Joyce was one of the most incredible scenes I could ever be privledged to witness...
and now so can you! (pic below.)

May God Bless ALL of our troops and all the Dusty's of the world.
With Love and Peace
