THE BASIL CARAVAN

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Are you saying that I can plant perennial seeds now?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

according to plant files yes....but where's Moon when you need her, I'd like toask her or Dave to make sure...but heck if we can that Might make things easier on both of us....then again, I might forget where I put them

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

What plant files are you talking about?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

here on DG says direct sow outdoors in fall on some of my perenials.......MOON!!! we have a plant question

Keaau, HI

Sure Trina, make a whip!

This is Tillandsia duratii.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

what types of perennial seeds are you trying to plant, Trina & Venice?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

hhhmmmm so what is Tillandsia Utriculata? I have seeds for it...don't know what to do with them but I got seeds for them....that looks neat and weird at the same time...kinda like the Travelers palm....kinda neat yet weird

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Trina, does that say it in the DG files or on a package of seeds?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Smiley for me I have oriental poppies, sweet williams, but I would probably forget where I planted them

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/67499/

It is an indoor plant.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I've never grown oriental poppies, but my sweet williams & dianthus come back every year. I always thought (maybe in error) if it was perennial, it wouldn't be a problem, be it seeds or plants.

But what do I know?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

It says it on both Venice "hardy zones 2a to 11" direct sow outdoors in fall or direct sow outdoors after in spring after last frost

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

NOT the Tillandsia venice. the Tillandsia is a tropical plant, I was asking Dave about it

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

This is what is says about the poppies.

Propagation Methods:
By dividing the rootball
From seed; winter sow in vented containers, coldframe or unheated greenhouse
From seed; sow indoors before last frost
From seed; direct sow after last frost

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

for the oriental poppies it says sow outdoors in fall, because they are perennials where as the other popies are just annuals

Keaau, HI

Tillandsia utriculata, the "Spreading Air Plant", is similar to other Tillandsia's, having fuzzy gray-green leaves. It is often seen in markets for sale on pieces of wood or rocks.

To start the seeds, get a log with bark still on it, and soak it in water till it is saturated. Sprinkle the seeds across the log. Water them onto the log, with a mister (spray bottle).
Keep the log moist by spraying it several times a day with the mister. Keep it well ventilated, but out of direct sunlight.

Depending on how fresh the seeds are, they will start growing in a couple months.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I copied that info from the oriental poppy file. see below

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/633/

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

but they too say I can sow them outdoors in fall....so does the letter that came with them.....I kinda want to wait though so I can get everything in the back cleaned up and planned out......oooohhh I can't wait until spring!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

If the plant is hardy in your area and the package says the seeds can be direct sown in the fall, then you can plant the seeds now. If it does not say direct sow in fall, then wait til spring or start indoors. But you can only do that for hardy perennials.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

From seed; winter sow in vented containers, coldframe or unheated greenhouse
From seed; sow indoors before last frost
From seed; direct sow after last frost

This says you can plant them in a green house in the winter.
Plant them inside. . .
Plant them after last frost, that means in spring.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Cool Dave that's very helpful

Venice http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57718/
this is the exact one I have

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

it says direct sow outdoors in FALL

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow! Sorry, I guess your poppy is different!!!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I do have the one you were showing to either way I am still skeptical, not going to plant them...the ones like you posted are what my grandad had....I just got some more colorful ones.....
like this one papaver paeoniflorum "venus" is cool and papaver somniferum "drama queen" is very colorful!

Trina, I was just reading about other people's comments about planting coneflower seed. Many of them said that since they naturally self seed, you can plant them in fall.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yeah but I still have an awful lot of weed killer to spray, I don't want to take the risk, especially since all but 2 of the poppies I got I paid for, yeah they were cheap 2.99 for 500 seeds, but still I don't feel like wasting the money.

and If I wait I can plan the garden out maybe a little better than I did the front one, besides a very special lady friend I know gave me these 2 awesome bushes I want to make a special planting with them and a few of the other plants I got.

uh dave just water and a log huh? if I plant 10 seeds how many do you think will germinate?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Are you going to use that weed killer in your backyard that kills everything for 3 months?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yes cause I have milkweed, and poison iy back there....and my kid is VERY allergic to poison ivy, must be from his sperm donor, excuse me biological father, hope that didn't offend anyone

Keaau, HI

Only 10? You might get nothing. If you have more seeds, plant them all.
Seeds to tropical plants should not be saved like those of temperate plants. The longer you wait to plant them, the worse your results will be. Plant all of your tropicals now, so they are big enough to be set outside in the Spring.

Most Bromeliads are epiphytes, and do not grow like the bulk of temperate annuals & perrenials that you have. If you stick them in soil you will kill them.

Here is a Cryptanthus hybrid, a terrestrial plant.

yeah but Dave if all plant all 200 seeds and I end up with 200 plants then I'm sending the extra's to your house!!!!! 1 or 2, maybe even 3 nice specimans is more than enough, I do have SOME limits, not many but some.

wow that would be a swictch...me sending plants to Dave instead of trying to get Dave to send me his whole yard

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Save them for your seed and plant sale!!!

Keaau, HI

Here is Guzmania monostachia, Striped Torch.

oh I think I am gonna have a LOT of stuff for my plant sale, without adding tropicals I don't know what are to the mix, I got those seeds for free all it said was:

Tallandsia Utriculata
200 tropical seeds
Happy Growing
Annette

It said Tropical my brain said ASK DAVE....of course if it comes with a latin name and no common names my brain always goes ask Moon or Dave. But if it says Tropical it always goes DAVE. Is that sad?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Are those the only thing to add to your list today?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Now Dave's got me all twitterpated with plants, cause he thinks its funny! I know he's sitting there laughing at me cause I want it and can't have it! LOL

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

no those all were already on your list

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

ok, just checking.

Trina, you better start looking for a pretty big log!!!!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

here's the 5 to add, but I am just guessing on seed count here

blue star amsonia 50
sweet william 100
Angelica archangelia 50
Laurens Grape poppy 100
Mixed cosmos 50

again all rough guesses Carol sorry

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)
