Hello....who did I miss. Who is making the cheesecake? Lolly ? Hunny? Who has the cheesecake come on fess up?

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

I wasn't doing the cheesecake but I did make a delicious pineapple angel food cake for dessert last night.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning Robin. My sister made hubby and a friend of mine both a blackberry cheesecake. Posted her recipe for Mekos and Mechelle and anyone else who wants to try it. Very easy.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

No not over doing ,just not doing enough. LOL It was rainy here all day yesterday so couldn't get out to do anything and that makes me as tired as working hard out side.

Morning all. I'm half here today. Got to go check on animals and gardens and all so I'll be back in a while. Have a great day-everyone.

Hey I know this is going to be out of context with this thread but I just have to tell you all what I just read on an ebay buy it now. It said that on buy it nows it was the federal law that the item has to be shipped priorty mail ? Since when? LOL I don't know how stupid this guy really thinks people are. LOL

I bought seeds a few weeks ago on e-bay and they shipped them regular first class. It wasn't priority.

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

I think I saw that listing too. I never buy the seeds that they say have to be shipped priority. It's just price gouging as far as I'm concerned.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

It wasn't seed it was a plant but still not a federal law to have to ship priorty. I know that the shipping on ebay has gotten ridiculious. I know there are some that are charging 3.95 to send 5 or 10 seeds thru the mail. It only takes a regular priced stamp to send seed. That's like when I sent the brugs out, the most it costed was 9.05 and that was for 2 fairly large ones, soil and all in a priorty box and people are charging 11 or more for one single little plant bare root.

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

I looked at some seeds on eBay the other day that were .99 and they wanted $4.00 to ship them.

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Had a great trip yesterday, weather beautiful, picnic food terrific, plane flew well.

Shipping Costs - I send most of my seeds (that I can't put in envelopes) in small boxes designed for VCR tapes purchased at Staples. Don't remember the cost, but seemed quite reasonable at the time. They hold a surprizing amount of stuff and I pay around $1.50 to 2.00 to send anywhere FIRST CLASS, not Priority. I think they have to weigh less than 13 ounces to go first class. The boxes are reuseable if they are opened carefully.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi Everyone. Glad you had a good trip Al did you take any pictures this time?
Got a good downpour here a few minutes ago so my lasanga bed got a good wetting.
Off to make a snack cake. Be back later.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't mind paying a couple of dollars as it will cover most of the handling, but paying that much is total nonsense. Thats like I have to send out some lily bulbs and I know it isn't going to cost over a few dollars to ship them.

Hey that makes me think, you gals and guys that ask for the lily bulbs. I have got to go get boxes tomorrow small enough to use and so I'll not get them out until WED. Hope that is ok with everyone.

Hey flower, you can make your boxes the size you want. Take a piece of cardboard and fold it to make a square or rectangle shape and TAPE it, then add a cut piece to fit over each end and TAPE it closed. You can make any size you need. You can also use paper towel lolls and fill them, then TAPE the ends shut. I do it all the time. No need to BUY boxes at all nor pay shipping for space you don't need. You can use food boxes cereac boxes- ANY kind you have on hand. Go to dollar store and get wide roll of tape- clear, and use white paper or labels for the name info. then cover with tape so it can be seen. Add postage and mail. You don't even have to cover the funny colored used box designs. I shipped a seedling in a toilet paper roll once. It went just fine. Couple stamps to mail. Use your imagination.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Well , I guess I could, just never thought about doing that. I would have to have something pretty sturdy as these are bulbs and would be afraid of them getting squashed.

Flower, you can use a 1/2 gallon milk box or plastic. Put in the bulbs cut off top part you don't need, and tape it up. If you need to, you can put a little shredded paper in the top to keep them from moving around. It's strong enough and you can cut it to what size you need. But if you use thick cardboard boxes to make your own, they will be as strong as any you buy or better, and you make it the size you need. Really, just use the wide roll of clear tape to put over the address info. As long as that shows, you are good. I started out by covering my old boxes with white typing paper, but my postal worker said it didn't have to be covered. Saves tape and paper. Just tape it up good and label.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I have a couple of small boxes like a Christmas card size and one that a small windchime came in so I guess i could use those.

Mekos,
what zone is the pea vines good too with out having to winter in a GH?

Sweet pea vines are hardy here in my zone. They come up volunteer all along the road sides every year. Don't know about any colder climates. I can only tell you what comes back to my climate- zone 7. See if anyone in other zones get them to come back each year.

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Sorry girls, I didn't take too many scenic pictures this time. Just a few family photos. First time in a couple of years that our whole family was together at the same place. We have two sons and a daughter, now all adults. Both sons Richie and John are unmarried, daughter Becky is married to Jason with granddaughter Olivia, a real rip at age 2.

Sounds like a great day Al. Two year olds are quite a handful. We need to find some good gardening gals for your sons. :) Then you'll have lots of grand babies to play with.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Mekos I mean the clitora vine, or is that the same as a sweet pea?

OH, sorry Flower, when you said pea, I thought sweet peas. I don't know about that one, this is my first year with it. I'm going to try to keep some seeds just in case, but I really don't know.

Florence, KY(Zone 6a)

I'm looking for suggestions. I want to plant something climbing, like a mg or a clematis to climb up the 2 trees in my front yard. DH is worried about them choking the tree so an annual would probably be best. Although if I prune a clematis back every spring, that shouldn't be a concern.

Anybody have something like that going on or have any ideas?

Well, Flower, all the info I found on that flower says for zone 6, it is an anual. the seeds will have to be caught before they get dry and split open because they will rip open and fling them selves out to reseed. OR you can keep it in a greenhouse for winter.

Have you guys ever heard of the suuuu_eeeee oink round up thingy going on? They are taking names now to get it going and said it is an anual, been going for several years. They say it is a lot of fun and space is limited so you got to sign up now. I had never heard of it so I signed up. Just wondering what I just got into.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL If that's what I think it is ,it is a hog calling contest. It being on here thou I can't say for sure LOL , but normally that is what it is.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh Jan that sounds like the annual piggy swap to me!! You are running with the grown ups now...they have some seed!!And they hold nothing back!!

OH MY GOODNESS, I may need a shovel to get out of this one.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

You better take a big shovel...and boxing gloves.

I'm afraid to sign up but I want to watch. Where is the thread? LOL

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh go ahead Seray give it a shot but hurry it fills fast...

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Right here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1035816/

Lolly, The little red flowered cypress vine would be pretty and would climb anything. Morning glories would also climb, you could put some netting (like brides veil is made from) around the trunk of the tree to get it to hold on and climb if you needed to. That is soft and wouldn't hurt the tree and would be easy to put on and take off if you wanted to when the vine dies back in winter. Tie it together with fish line, then cut the fish line and it comes off. Anything for a vine to cling to will help it climb. I don't think either of these vines would hurt a tree.

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Hyacinth Bean vine would be gorgeous on a tree, but it reseeds so much..that could get interesting!

Mekos, thanks for the heads up on the seed swap..I signed up too :)

Chris the Lurker LOL

Now, I guess we all better be catching seeds.
You are welcome Chris. Chime in more instead of lurking. You all probably could have told me I was in over my head with this. I may need several big shovels, and people help. Arejay are you gonna join in? Have you done this before?

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I have too much to do so I think I'll watch from the sidelines this time. Have fun girls - lol.

mekos - what are you still doing up? I'm beat from working outside all day and need to get some shut eye. It's back to work tomorrow :~(

I'm in a panic over this swap. Got to figure how many packs of seed I'm going to need.(or wheather to tuck my tail and run for the hills, while I can).
Night everyone. I do need to turn in. Love you guys.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

I have chicken wire hanging from the ground ( I didn't put it there) and the cypress vine is climbing up that. My friend John was here the other day and he told me that if i put chicken wire around my trees it would keep the horses from chewing on the bark. I know that was random, but just.. wanted.. to.. share... lol, Nite e1 ;)
