Imzadi, I am confused. Are you talking about the clematis? I thought that the fluffy ones appear before that strange round pod. So what is the story about them
a hello thread
LOL JJ...I have taken more pics in the last 2 days than I have in the last 2 years!
clematis seeds i know of on my look like the ones posted above. but as they go on to take flight they get fuzzier and poofy so they can blow on the wind.
this little guy has thinned out to get ready for a blowing wind

most of the time though winter doesnt give them enough time to get there. like my venices pictures are accurate of the seed head and pod zone is too short for them to take flight. they end up riping on the plant and going no where. maybe why i dont have strays.
either way the seed is at the end of the thing. Venices pics are accurate of seed heads and seeds. the seeds are at the end of the fuzzy things.
Hello Imzadi, what a lovely thread! I'm new to gardening and I'm always amazed at how much there is to learn, and how great people here at DG are about sharing info.
Lainymay, so sorry to read of your son...inadequate words for such a tragedy, I'm sorry.
hello to the rest of gang too, Rachel, Ican, Moon,Venice, Trina, Smily, JJ, and Sharon :) I think I got you all
Gee! I just about threw out all of my fuzzy seeds!!!!
ok, I am still confused. On the ends of all the fluffy things, are a very tiny white something. Now, that odd swirlly thing of mine, is now drying out and there are brown things that surely look like seeds.
hey Lynnie glad you found us!
This is the information I found. The fluffies blow away and they the seed pod develops with brown seeds inside.
Any seed you collect needs to be 'viable', that is it has the potential to germinate. Generally viable seed will be visible in the seedhead, this is particularly true of species. If you can't see any seeds, however small, then probably none have set and so there is nothing to germinate.
With some varieties you'll find only a few of the seeds in the seedhead are viable and so you'll only be able to see a few seeds. But for all varieties, wait until the seeds go brown before you collect them as this is the most common indication they've ripened and dried and can be safely stored.
ok! At first they produce the more white fluffy things with a white dot on the end. Then that spiral thing grows and later the seeds turn brown. That is what was confusing me.
Your fluffy things ARE attached to a seed I think. Did they come from one of those spiral seed pods? Anyway, the seeds I have are larger but I guess that doesn't matter.
You have seeds and I have seeds!!!!
here is a bit of info for you ladies..

Hey there y'all. saw this thread and it looked like fun!
we downsized/moved to north Raleigh (about 15 miles) five years ago to be nearer my elderly parents. I try to garden... at this time no one seeing the weeds and rows of unplanted dead plant pots would believe it. been under the weather for 1 year, the weeds went bezerk.
was married once before, two kids, 29 and 26. remarried to a Dear Husband (DH). dear daughter (DD) is a senior in high school. we're down to only 1 dog and 5 parakeets.
ican and trina - know what you meant, it was hard to give up freedom to re-hitch. Had a blast being single; DH had a heck of a time talking me into this. nothing like the first time at all. Anchorage is so beautiful. Didn't realize it was SO BIG - we drove up into the hills and looked back. y'all have a great used book store there. that's DH's thing, reading.
underneath weeds out yonder is this beginnings of a hosta collection because our yard is sun-challenged. where sun, I've put about 500 varieties of irises (dying under weeds), and some puny rose bushes that don't like it here at all. oh well... everything else, I'm a novice at. but I hang out mostly in the Iris Forum, because I'm crazy about them.
Julie - we were there at Niagra Falls in mid August! had forgotten how beautiful upstate NY is.
Lainy, is Bedfordshire near Leeds? we've been to the castle at Leeds, too. gorgeous countryside. would love to chat with you. there are some wonderful iris hybridizers in UK. Bartlett is one of my favorites.
Venice I have no clue. I just found those fuzzy things and the fell off in my hand when I touched them. Then there was nothing but the stem left.
Went back out and found these posted above.
Don't know which is the chicken and which is the egg!
LOL Pam that was too funny!
JJs, check out the link above, about 5 posts up.
Moon, where have you been? I feel like we were the blind leading the blind! Thanks for the link. It is really hard to describe these things, fuzzy this and fuzzy that, etc.!!! LOL
Trina, we are so proud of you. They are all marching in line! Very colorful. You have trained them well.
Moon I did. I learned I was not nuts that mine does grow from the old dead vine and that seeds give me a headache.
The ones kassy wants from the columbine next year better be a whole lot easier or she's getting the whole darn plant.lol
LOL Isn't this fun!!!!
columbines are easy to get. if you have ever seen a daylily seed pod y=thats what columbines look like. no fuzzy stuff. hehe
maybe thats why i have only one clematis in my yard. hehe to hard to grow. hehe
i grew up in alaska. i loved every minute of it.
Just have'n a ball!!
Is there a refrigerator forum maybe I could answer some of those questions.
hehe i dont know maybe there is. i think they have a kitchens and appliance forum here somewhere. hehe
aww dont go having to much fun here
imzadi, lilies and columbine I can grow. No what those look like but never saved any. They spread like crazy at my house.
Alaska would be nice to see but don't think I could live there.BRRR
I like water but I want mine with sand and sun not ice and eskimos. LOL
I got more flower pots...I will soon be done~!!!!!!! yippeeee
nice thing about SC and NC - mid state it's about the same distance from the Appalachian Mts. to the coast, not a far drive either way.
I have a columbine in the front bed. it reseeds itself. everytime I look for the seeds, the pods are empty! but get many volunteer babies the next year. it's fun to give those away.
two years ago I crossed some irises and made seeds, but bugs really like them, had fat larvae in all but six. found out on here, they needed to be sprayed once pods set. still 6 of 30 were free of bugs. no results yet. can't wait to see what comes out. irises do not breed true to the parent in the seed = new genetic mix.
never had irises seed before....Mine is in bloom now I will have to see what happens!
you got to hand pollinate them. kinda hard to do. easier to buy them.
bonjon know what you mean, i gave away about 23 babies this year and didn't put a dent in it.
Out pullin weeds and they're sprountin up all over again. Gonna take some to trina.
Pollinat, seed, huh I can't even get a bloom!!
not too hard to do :o)
(she says as she thinks back on how many iris stalks she trampled doing it.....)
but 99% of irises from seed make great compost only. not worth it unless you hybridize serious or hobby. much easier to find sales, pass alongs, or trades. Still waiting to see if I get plants from seeds from 2 years ago...
I have bearded irises, I love them.
JJ refrigerator forum LOL that's FUNNY what would my specialty be?? Brownies.
yeah and I can't wait to get them JJ! Plants Rule!
jjsg - you mean no iris blooms? hmmmm
take photo of your iris bed and post it here. let's see if we can tell why.
did you see my bearded iris Lynnie....up towards the top of this thread or I can just repost
Lynnie you bake em I'll eat em.
My irises never bloom. Moved some this year to see what happens.
Trying to keep an eye on the neighbor across the street. flowerbeds were getting overgrown when they bought the house. I went over before they did and dug up some things I call minature daffadils. Told her if she was going to get rid of the flowers let me know I would dig them up.
She hasn't touched anything since they moved in in July. There are now locust trees growing beside the sidewalk.
