Thank you Sheila, you are a sweetie.
North Central Texas Fall Roundup Trade Thread.
Yes Sylvia, sounds good, I have you down, thanks.
As you can see, I was up early this morning, so I updated my list. Please make sure I have everything on your list, I do not want to forget anyone. Thanks.
Ken, I'll glad to bring you an agastache, along with the hosta. I don't have any double brugs (that I know of), but I only have one that has ever bloomed. The ones I have are Dr Seuss, versicolor peach, Chas Grimaldi, and Golden Lady. Any others would be great. Especially the ones that you know for sure are cold-hardy in this area. I put 5 in the ground last fall and lost them all. :(
Dennis, could I please have one of your chili pequins?
pbtxlady, I have you down for the other chile plant.
pbtxlady, you do not put Brugs in the ground in the Fall, they do not have time to get their root system together. Keep them over the Winter and plant in the Spring. I'll bring you something you will like.
Dennis, you are quite welcome to the stevia and no trade is necessary. It's a poor little puny thing, like all the rest of them, but maybe you will be able to figure out how it likes to be treated.
I ordered a whole bunch of interesting plants about six weeks ago just for the roundup, figuring I'd have time to get them big and gorgeous before the swap. I had bought lots of stuff from that seller before and I knew they'd be small, "starter" plants, but he's an expert packer and the plants were always well-established and healthy.
This time, they all arrived puny and struggling to grow on what appeared to be just rice hulls. The addition of good soil, lots of water, fertilizer, shelter from the worst heat - nothing has really helped them get big and strong.
I thought the stevia would be pretty and interesting and easy - but it hasn't worked out that way for me. The plant isn't very pretty (to me) because the leaves turn black and crispy here and there for no apparent reason. It's fussy and frustrating.
I bought some seed and I will give you some of that, too - I can't raise established plantlets, I can't get cuttings to root and so I'm not going to even attempt stevia from seed. ;)
I am going to go back to marigolds and zinnias - now those, I can raise! LOL!
Oh come on quilter_gal, don't give up that quick. I can tell you that Stevia is a plant that grows better when the days are getting longer not shorter. And anyone can root a Brug, I will bring you some to learn with and if they root you can give most of them away. You just have to find out what works with what plant.
stephanietx, I was reading another thread and you have talked me into a Rock Rose, please.
Quilter_gal, thanks for the stevia. You are more than welcome to have anything on my list. It all needs a home, so don't be shy! :)
It looks like my wife and daughter can't make it with me, but my dad is going to come. He has a podocarpus to bring, and is looking for shade to partial shade plants. I know he expressed some interest in toad lilies, but it doesn't look like anyone has any this year. I think he would also be interested in a flame acanthus.
wow... i might actually have something someone wants... I was generously given a little cup with many dutchmans pipe vine plants in it... came home, planted them, cared for them, and they have grown, but i did not divide them. (I think she told me to divide them)
They are now about 12" tall... but I dont think I need 8 of them... I will TRY to divide some of them, and get them viable... then post what i have... I didnt think I had anything to give... but hopefully all that will change by next year!!!
dfwdennis, I would be very interested in your dads Podocarpus and I think I can fix him up with some Toad Lilies. I will even throw in a Ginger or two. Check out my haves list and see if there is anything you want. Thanks.
Kenboy, I'll put you down for the podocarpus. I'm sure my dad will be thrilled if you can hook him up with some toad lilies, and he will probably like the gingers as well. I'm not too familiar with gingers myself, so I'll have to leave it up to you to pick good ones for him. Thanks! :)
Melanie....Once you start getting Pipevine Swallowtails laying eggs on the vine, you may wish you had more! LOL!
Someone on another TX forum told me to list my wants LOL! Well I do have wants as we all do but don't have much to trade from my garden this year as it is in the newly developing stage.
Wants:
Anything tough, drought resistant, native or just darn pretty to try. But more specifically...bat faced cuphea, chocolate flower, passion flower vines
Have:
TX star hibiscus seed
2 spineless prickly pear (small starts)
1 walking cactus thingy NOID (small but well rooted)
Can provide several species of sedum if asked
Trying to get some seed from Black Foot Daisy (unsure at this point)
Cheryl
Cheryl,
I am going to be digging up mounds of Mexican petunias (Ruellia Katie blue) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133838/ . If you would like some, I'll just bring a whole mound and when divided, it will make probably 15 different mounds to plant. I used them that way in September 2008, about 30 plants, just to fill in blank spaces in our new beds and now will be taking a lot of them out because I want more variety of plants. They thrive in poor soil, sun or shade, hot and dry.
Glenna
Cheryl, I have autumn joy sedum and someone is bringing me a blue sedum. I would like to bring you passion flower plant and bat faced cupea cuttings for some sedum and walking stick cactus. LMK if that is okay with you. I will get the cuttings started today on the bat faced cupea.
Charlene
Oh no... I'm not giving up - just giving up on the things that I've tried and failed at. ;)
Apparently, I've got the hang of rooting things like African violets, heuchera, tropical hibiscus and hydrangea - not so good at cuttings from exacum, stevia, jasmine, butterfly bush.
I pulled the stevia out of their pots and I may have learned why they're not thriving - no air in the roots - the rich soil I gave them had just broken down into a soggy mass. I pulled off the mud and put them into bigger pots with coir/perlite, so they'll probably be looking a lot better in a week or two.
Cheryl, I would love to have a few Texas star hibiscus seed - I will have several different kinds of wildflower seeds in addition to the seeds and plants listed in my post.
dfwdennis, I have a flame acanthus for you.
Texmel, I'd love to have a dutchman's pipe vine. What would you like for a trade?
Charlene
Txmel, if you are wanting more dwarf petunias, I can bring some purple ones.
Charlene
charlene... i'd love any and all dwf petunias!!! I have alot of places that just won't grow things... I think I will try petunias there! Its hard to plant under trees, with all the roots! THANKS!!!
and yes, if I get a pipe transplanted, I will put your name on one!
Phyllis, thanks for the flame acanthus!
I'm surprised that nobody wants woolly stemodia. It is a really nice, drought tolerant, full sun, flowering, low growing, native groundcover with silvery foliage. The only bad quality that I have found is that it dies back over the winter. Anyone? :)
Charlene, the sedum is all ground cover types and I will bring some of all 3. The walking cactus is yours as well. I will bring an ID/facts sheet on it. It is hardy and eventually will get quite large.
quilter-gal, Some of the seeds will have your name on them.
Cheryl
TXMel, I've had good luck with dwarf Mexican petunias (Katie blue) in shade and part shade. They don't like very rich soil, I found out, or high nitrogen fertilizer accidently applied when doing the St. Augustine. And they bloom best when divided every year. Since I've had them about 6 years, I can no longer find anyone nearby who wants any more. LOL. I'll have plenty to bring for everybody, I think.
Glenna
Anna, I was just eyeballing mystic spires earlier today and was going to go buy some this week, so good timing! I'll put you down for woolly stemodia.
Great!
dfwdennis, If you have any woolly stemodia left I would like some.

Baja,
I have two small, rooted spineless prickly pear if you want one. I can also bring you a pad cutting from my walking cactus. I have only one of those that is rooted and it is going to someone else. They are easy to start from a cutting. I also have turks cap seed heads forming and will bring you some if they ripen by the trade date.
Cheryl

Much as I desire to be two places at once, we will be on vacation during the Arlington RU. Not my choice but there are others involved. As another choice will do my darndest to be in Jacksonville. The last 3-4 RU's have been forced to miss through circumstances beyond my control. Don't know if I can control Jacksonville, but will certainly try my best.
I owe much to all of you. You have been my life saving group, literally.
Christi
Just will bring whatever I can, don't expect anything in return. Just the joy of hugging the necks of you who have literally saved my life.

newtonsthirdlaw Quilter-gal can I have one of your butterfly bush for the TX star hibiscus seed?
You sure can - I will go tag one for you and if those seeds grow, I'll be very happy to have a "Texas" something to put into my DH's "Texas" flower bed. Thank you! :)
