Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #109

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Mary that's a cute picture! It is sad to leave someone when you know you'll probably never see them again and liked them so much.

Betty that one that looks like it's dying is a bulb, not tulips. This came up after the tulips had died out, and they had tiny little flowers on them that lasted just a few days.

I have more pics but it's late, me and Dave did a serious Wal Mart run and got back about 30 minutes ago, now it's bedtime.

I'm glad you had a great birthday LK, I'm sorry I missed it :(

Have a great night and I'll catch up with everyone tomorrow if I'm not too awfully busy.

Oh, best of today, getting most of the weeds out of the flowerbed along the fence.
Worst of today, having to dig weeds and go to Wal Mart, I didn't want to do anything lol!

What did I learn? I don't know what I learned, now that's bad!

Baton Rouge, LA

Hey Crissy - I asked DH to look as well - and we think your 'mystery lily' is a Red Canna...we have one too...it should have red leaves and a red flower...

HUGS - Night NIght.....

Mary

PS: on my flower "riddle".....where have YOU seen this flower before?

Lyndonville, NY

Mary, when Shannon was in Kindergarden....and at that time a very sick kid on chemo...they had a Grandma that volunteered in the room. She did this for 10 years! Well, we adored her. And I honestly believe that if it wasn't for "Grandma Little" and Mrs. Blanchard...the teacher...my daughter might not be here. They went above and beyond to keep Shannon healthy....did extra cleaning on desks and tables...sent journal back and forth every day so I knew what was going on in class...if someone had the sniffles....etc.

Well, I ended up keeping Shannon in Kindergarden for two years...she missed so much that first year..I wanted her to have a stable year. Well, our dear Grandma Little passed away 8 years ago. Her family set up a scholarship for students that worked and volunteered in the primary wing...and wanted to possibly go on in the future working with kids.

Shannon was selected to receive the Grandma Little Scholarship, a $200 award towards books or whatever for college.... and it was presented by her daughter...and Grandson Tyler...who had been in Shannons Kindergarden class that first year....and they were both inseperable at that time. Well, I heard the name...and the tears just flowed! Now, as I said above.....Mrs. Blanchard the Kindergarden teacher also passed away. She had cancer.....and told me one time "I think God prepared me for this...by caring for Shannon in my class. I think He was setting an example." So, on June 26th...they give out that scholarship also. These two women just touched our lives so much and are so special to us both.

Now come on Mary...dmail me a hint. LOL

Crissy...I need help with weeds...I no longer know which is weeds and which is flowers....they are all blooming. Does that count for a full blooming garden when the weeds bloom?

I really have to go to bed....started that way at 10:30!

Baton Rouge, LA

Deb - Your story is very touching - I'm going back to re-read it in a bit....

I just had an accident with a Circle E candle that burned my right index finger...and may hinder my typing a bit tonight...it is VERY minor but hurts like the devil...

Of Course I will d-mail you a hint Deb! But only because you are my "Twin Sister" and everyone always gets us mixed up. :)

(Truth is my sister's name is Debbie! Deborah Sue)

Hugs,
Mary

Mary's flower appears in the banner across DG in the summertime....
I have one too, believe it or not, but it isn't blooming just yet.
And best, it is a perennial for me.

Glad you liked the book, Mary. Yes, it is worth a second read.

Lovely photos of the kids....and beautiful of Carrie, too, Deb.

Baton Rouge, LA

Of Course Sharran is Correct! Very Good Sharran!

I was so excited when I realized this was the very flower in the Daves Garden Web Banner....

Of course DH says..."Oh - I knew that already".....

Sharran - I'm hoping it's a perennial for us as well...although the strange way it has grown up...I might be tempted to plant some more...around it...it has grown at a complete diagonal....90 degrees.........not very pretty but was I surprised to see that it matched the DG Banner... :)

My first day "back at work" since my last week was a "vacation week" (as you know I was out sending out resume's)

Hugs to all,

Mary

Carol beautiful flowers!

Good luck with the Racoon. When we first put in our pond they would drag plants all over…I know they are here because the neighbor scared mom and a little one up his tree last week but they haven’t bothered anything in my yard for quite some time. I am going to try a feww feeder goldfish in my back tubs and see what happens….if they survive I will try some in the front pond.

Bev, fantastic lilies….I want to get more, I only have three right now…Stargazer (we think), a Big Orange that my son gave me, and some small landscape lilies that I have no I.D. on….

Waving Liz!! The mold is a kit we picked up at Michael’s… What ya throwing out???

LK Cannas are so beautiful…..I love them!

Love your leaves Betty, love the stair step idea.

Crissy, so glad you got your camera…..looks like you are having fun with it!!

Hey Judy, sounds like a really good time…sorry you’re still sore.

Great pic of all the kids!

I love Crocosmia….mine is coming back quite well…I don’t think I could have too many…I think they are fantastic!

Bill and I got in our 30 mile ride this morning … a nice flat one.
Laura and I finally got Dorothy’s yard finished….we are going to take a break tomorrow to catch up on some of our own work then we do Doris’s yard starting Tuesday. We are really, really tired right now.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Lyndonville, NY

Good morning,

Mary, thank you for the hint! And no, I didn't notice it....Congrats to Sharran for being so observant.

Thanks for the compliments on Carrie also. She so looks like my Moms side of the family.

Zhinu....did you get jello legs? That is soooo much riding!

Mary, I have no sisters....and I am Deborah Kay. I pretty much answer to anything around here.

Today is the last "scheduled" day of school, and then 10 days of exams where they just go in according to their testing schedule. Shannon is supposed to go to her senior class trip to a local state park....but got permission from the principal to go make handprint T-shirts with the kindergardeners.

I have to tell you a cute one. She came home laughing last week and told me "I will be late coming home on Friday, I have to go home with Stephen....he is taking me to meet his parents before we get married!" LOL Ahhh, love the four and five year old groups!

Waiting for my coffee to finish up

Everyone have a great day.

Debbie

great news crissy congratulations!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Leave it to me, posted my goodmorning and photo's and chit/chat on another thread..they must be trying to figure out what to heck I was talking about..lol

Crissy congratulations...that will make up for some of the shift differential that hubby lost when changing work schedule won't it..see, it pays to be a good worker...

Debbie, won't forget your birthday..that was my DH's birthday, had he lived he'd be 67 and my cousin who married Roger's brother so became my SIL will be 57 (10 yrs. to the day and almost minute difference than Roger-always celebrated together)...now I can add you to my list...isn't it funny how many of our lives entertwine...

LindaKay, thanks...they are easy I just started at the top and made a level area for step #1, then about 5 or 6" lower dig up another and so on...on my way home tonight I know of someone who has rhubbarb leaves so I'll go get some so I can use up the other 2 bags of cement in my trunk...mind you, it takes an entire bag to make 1 big leaf but still not bad, less than $5. a leaf..sooo funny, I asked Greg yesterday to help me pick up the leaves and set on each step, he was working on the boat and was going to a b.b.q. later so said he would in a bit...out of the corner of his eye he could see me moving one closer to the area that I was working on so put down the tools and moved them saying "I know what you are thinking and don't"

Victoria Harbour, ON

Liz, yes there is a major dog show in California .. think it's in October..not sure (lol) which of the San's it's in but know it's less than 2 hr. drive from you...you are still not feeling good, are you sure it was indigestion? better get it checked out... garage sale sounds great, know they do well here..ask me, they always seem toget some of my $$$..was looking across the street last night and saw that Bernice had a beautiful antique chair out at the roadside, kept thinking of all the things I could do with it but decided against it..so there it still sat this a.m. - guess not a lot of created people driving the streets.. I could see it with wire mesh in the bottom of the seat, moss and vines and flowers..a sign going across the back..if I keep this up I'll be picking it up tonight...

Speaking of plants...left the house early, just love the early morning drive if I've plenty of time, taking back roads, so got to Barrie at 8:15 so went to Walmart, of course the nursery..Walmart in Barrie has some really nice healthy plants, not so in Midland...there sitting in a corner was a shrub with pretty flowers, almost looked like coroepsis (?) flowers on it...thought of a perfect little area for it..looked at the tag and it said Japanese Kerria..whatever kind of shrub that was...pretty so why not buy it...

Keyed in "Japanese Kerria" and have to make some changes..it grows up to 6' high and 6' wide and needs special care...leave it to me..lol

Debbie, kindergarden project sounds like fun...oops client came in have to run be back shortly

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, that will be so pretty when it grows. it says it is a type of rose?

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/108983/

Did you ever get a picture of the "roger" plant?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Think Linda Kay that I've planted it in an area that just might get too much shade..will move it over to the patio garden area...

http://www.denverplants.com/perennials/html/rodge_pin.htm

As I've been working on the patio area I've been thinking of digging up sod to create an entrace with flower beds...I just might go and see if they have another Japanese Kerria and I'll put it on each side as to create the entrance...might look pretty, now watch me not find a 2nd one..already on the one I purchased are several blooms..more petals than what the photo shows...

Lyndonville, NY

I hope your happy. I am going to the local Nursery at 3:00.

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm so laughing Debbie...did we give you the 'urge'...don't blame me, it's Carol that got me going to the nursery with her wanting a rose...

Lyndonville, NY

Well, I have wanted a yellow rose...a Peace Rose as Tubby showed me awhile back. And then one of my little petite rose climbers didn't make it I had gotten from a dear friend DG'er.....and then your all showing me these beautiful plants.

The wheels are just turning away up there in my brain, cob webs blowing out my ears....and DH is gonna be so mad at ALL OF YOU for making me do this! LOL

Debbie

Victoria Harbour, ON

He'll get over it..just don't tell him I was part of it otherwise if we ever meet on one of my visits he'll give me the what for..lol go for it Debbie you deserve it...it's a beautiful sunshine day here today, I so want to be home...just called Judith (hairdresser) need a perm badly, her answering service is one, just hope when she calls she doesn't say come in today...I want to play tonight, well, that's what I'm thinking of doing NOW, if I get home and sit to take my shoes off, nope, I'll be in bed sleeping...

Don't forget to show us photo's of you new 'treasures'...

Speaking of treasures, wow, forgot I had given the office address for one of my swaps..gift just came, beautiful windchimes...will take photo's tonight for you all...

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Debbie!

I'm already looking forward to fall when I can separate and move things and what-not, I'm not liking the way my beds are this year, at all.

It's almost lunch time, I am Hungry!

Betty that is pretty, even though it gets huge!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Oooooo I can't wait for pictures Betty! Oh fiddlesticks. I was going to say something and forgot...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Do you all 'think' out what you need, which bed they'll go, do a design???

I'm the 'buy' and set anywhere, what will be will be...and that's about the look I'm getting in my gardens...Michelle when she brought me the wheelbarrel full of bulbs and iris said my garden had a 'fun' feel to it...is that good or bad...hmmmm

Think I'll forgo lunch today and go to the recycle store..Michelle is looking for shutters for the house she's just moved into up the street from me, needs them to be around 55" long, who knows they just might have a pair or two...that would really make her day...

LOL...Debbie! I swear, I meant to type Debbie, not Mary...

OMG, OMG!! How very exciting...
Betty, Liz...everyeryobody!

You are not going to believe this! My baby rose is opening...Here is the absolute crazy thing, This is the transplant I did Last Spring, if you remember my telling you this was one I truley believed to called Jacob's Ladder, I swear to you that this bloomed White flowers, I have never ever planted red roses, only had The white and Josephs coat. So I have babied and cheered this little transplant for over a yearand to my extreme suprise it's RED! How in the world can this be??

Tears springing as this is my new memory garden, transplanted this rose in honor of Carol, now birdie is there and last fall October 13th i added Caro's Eades kick ass compost! It is just amazing because well, Red is for the color of love...I just can't believe it's RED not White, lol truely a big, big difference...Buyt I am so Proud of this Mircle in my memory garden, and see another baby bud!

Woohoo, got to go sing her a song.

Judy I had the front flowerbed last year and did the same exact thing with it, just added some Cosmos to the back, bored with that look. The front flowerbed was used by the previous owners, they had 7 holly's in it YUK!!! I didn't build the bed along the fence until Sept or Oct last year, so this is the first year for that one. I have too many iris's in an area I didn't want any, I want a separate iris bed with numerous varieties. I want a variety of plants that bloom spring/summer/fall/winter in the long bed by the fence. Not sure what I want from the front bed.

Lyndonville, NY

Seed, I have had the same experience. I had lots of yellow and orange roses, and some peach & pink ones...but not red. Well, apparently when my DH trimmed them...he cut them past the graphing? I don't know what this means...FIL explained.....but when he did that...they lost their color. Now every one of my roses is red. My beautiful orange climber at the back porch...is now all red. So, I have a lot to learn about roses.

Victoria Harbour, ON

How odd, I'll have to add that to my "What did I learn today?" portion of my post tonight..had no idea that they could change colors, somewhere in the back of my mind though I remember Grandma having loads of peonies and saying that all of a sudden they were all white..she said it had something to do with the bees though?..interesting it is.. you'll have to tell us more Debbie about cutting them past the graphing? not sure what that means..miss Gita when we are in a muddle about plants, she always had the answers...if you are lurking Gita, could you help us out?

The iris are beautiful Judy, your gardens are coming to life..how's the front yard garden? no weeds I hope...ohhhh they weren't weeds were they, wildflowers they were...

Crissy, the gardening will get easier as the years go by...when the home is new it seems to take forever and a lot of energy to make a difference...

My Carol Eades compost in a bag was set into the ground just in front to the big window frame with metal starbust...planted a few more plants in hopes to make it extra pretty...every year I plant sunflowers and every year I don't get '1'..had hoped they would take, would have looked so pretty for her..

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I know a little about grafting, like when they sell you a dwarf tree, or a fruitless peach, for example, more often than not it's grafted. What they don't tell people is the grafting goes away or can be cut off. My mom bought a fruitless peach tree when I was 4. By the time I was 7 it has begun to bear fruit but they would all fall off long before they were ripe. Every year the peaches got a little riper and a little riper until one year they were completely ripe. Same thing happened to her roses, she had big beautiful roses and one year after the frost they came back 10 times smaller and one color. I dmailed duckmother with your question Betty, she'll know the answer.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Know what I have to do when I get home tonight...

At lunch I dropped in to the re-use it center but they did not have the shutters that Michelle was looking for but they did have a magazine rack, already have one at home the same, made of wood with the dowling (will take photo tonight) and it was $4.00 so I couldn't resist..

So now I have in my little car, 2 bags of cement in trunk, 4 frames leaned against the back seat, a shrub in the front seat, a magazine rack on the back seat....excuse me...got to clean my car...won't keep the rack, somebody I'm sure will want it...

Victoria Harbour, ON

How very interesting Crissy, thanks...when I was at the nursery one day last week, not sure which as I'm at a nursery almost every day..lol..there was a sign saying Mother Geranium's - $8.99...was only a young man on duty and he couldn't answer what the difference between a regular one and a mother one..perhaps it has something to do with grafting of some type?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Forgot to say, I've a box of windchimes I received in the mail as well to bring home...NEED A TRUCK!!
