Hang in there wha. Besides if you were working, how could you build things? Who has viburnum opulus 'Roseum' (Snowball viburnum) and/or viburnum sargentii 'Onondaga' and how much shade do you have it in? Are there any other viburnums that are hardy to zone 3 that you luv? I want to put in a viburnum in a shady area against a fence. It will be neighbours with a halo dogwood. Thanks.
What have you ordered for 2009_Part 8
I have Onondaga. About half day sun. It's doing well.
dnut i have snowball in full sun
no worries dnut on my job search - turned one down yesterday that would have meant 50%+ travel - can't be away from wife and yard that much or is that yard and wife?
I hear you on the travel thing wha. When I had my own business I was in the air half the year. DH would be a very unhappy camper if I still did that. More importantly who would disbud the dahlias? :O
KarenI'm a bit worries about Lavander Dew
Yoiurs is probably true to color I had counted on more lavender ahhhhh well.
About Van Bourgundian
I have never ordered bulbs from them, Plants are ghastly I wont even look at the catalogue I have been dissapointed in them too many times.
We have mostly used the barrel of daffs which grow in front of our stone wall along our rd. I am thinking of the blueberry ripple tulips which can go close to the house. We don't have any big beds of tulips otherwise known as 'feed the deer'.
I have not ordered any bulbs yet---still waiting to see how new garden plays out----I have to plant a bunch of iris there, but I know it needs something else---just don't know what.
How about iris reticulata with crocus in the spring?
My two "Dancing in the Rain" hostas arrived today from Made in the Shade Gardens. The new garden isn't ready for them yet until we get a truckload of loam, so they jumped right into my other new shade location for a transition party. This has been great weather for the hostas.
Patti - that is some long list you adopted! I really enjoyed hearing how you pack them all up for island delivery! Very clever!
Dahlia - you cracked me up about the scapes! Too funny!
My Dallas Star in my Pixie Garden has nice buds on it......can't wait to get some shots of some DL blooms!! Many of my tags faded over the winter, so I'll have to get some help with ID'ing as to some of them.
I bought a couple of delphs today. Couldn't resist, and they were $7 each. Really big plants! The variety is Cherry Blossom. I got them at a small place called Dutchie's in Manomet (part of Plymouth). He has some good deals.
Also bought 4 new heucheras from Walmart the other day at $6 each, nice looking plants. They are 'Burgundy Lace', 'Mocha', 'Caramel', and the 4th one a chartreuse color whose name escapes me at the moment. Haven't gotten a pic of them, but here is a pic of the delphs.
Karen
I show them placed on only one side, but I will move one. They aren't planted yet. I have 2 white delphs on the left side of the door, and I will move one to the right to balance it out. I planted them last year, and they're doing great. Also have a blue one that I planted last year, and that one is doing spectacular also. They are plants that really need staking, though, especially in windy areas or when getting heavy rains like we've had.
Oh, I hear we broke a record today for the coolest day on a July 9th. It felt good to me, though. Great gardening weather. Too bad I was working from 9 a.m. - 7:15 p.m. I did manage to get some photos taken when I got home.
Karen
I remember wearing a down jacket in July 10 years ago. What a surprise, the temp dropped very suddenly.
pretty delphs!!
Thanks, Allison!
Karen
Those are very pretty---I moved 2 delphs today---they were just languishing where they were---also moved a small rose that was being overwhelmed by the other plants. I would like some reticulas in that new garden, Iris--good idea. Louise, did you ever find hosta 'Remember Me'?
Hi Robin. No......but I did order the two "Dancing in the Rain" hostas from Made in the Shade Gardens. I planted them today in our new garden where I have housed all the neat plants I got from Kathy's RU. We had a huge dump truck dump a load of loam yesterday. Boy was that a lot of dirt!!! It took both of us most of the day to move it to the areas where we needed it. They dumped 2/3 of it right next to the where we were going to do the new garden, but moving it even 10 feet was quite a job. We enlisted the aid of Lydia, our tractor to move 6 buckets of it to a low area in our front yard. Hank will do a low stone wall in front of the two sides of the garden, but for now the plants are all in. The only plants I had to buy were the 2 Dancing in the Rain hostas. Besides the RU plants, we liberated a gorgeous mountain laurel that was a gift many years ago, as well as a white azalea that was a memorial gift when my Mom died. Both were getting very choked, and they now look great in the new garden. Then I moved some other astilbe, columbine and bleeding hearts to add to the blue columbine from Harper and the lamium, and RU baby hostas. I still have to move Kathy's Japanese fern into this garden, along with some caladiums when they come up. Here's a halfway-done shot.....before any wall is added.
That looks like a good start! Everything will fill in nicely, & we'll see it at the RU! I still need another hosta---was thinking of 'Eskimo Pie'.
great project Louise
Thanks, Marilyn and JoAnn! Hank started the stone wall today and it is going to look good. Most of that soil in the front of the garden will be grass once the wall is finished.
Marilyn - do you know the cultivars of the 2 hostas you gave me at the RU?
JoAnn - now that you've paid for your room, you're just going to have to come!!!!!!! LOL It's meant to be !!!
Oh my gosh, Louise---I totally forgot what I dug up----
That's ok, Marilyn....maybe you'll recognize them when you see them. LOL One is a little baby one, if that triggers anything... I love them both anyway, so it really doesn't matter!
let's see that rock wall !
well i broke down - this bed had a "hole" in it and i needed to fill it in the two hibiscus that were there never came up so out they went - after some searching i found a baby blue eyes spruce that i think goes well here - it was on sale - went to a nursery in amherst, nh that "claimed" to be about 9 miles away - 22 miles later i arrived
one of the hibiscus was moved the other did not appear to have life.
As you can see, it's only going to be a low retaining wall so it won't cover the flowers. If you come in September, you can give it a critical eye!
on the right side why are there little rocks on the bottom? the critical eye wants to know?
Looks nice, Louise. Compliments to Hank!
Looking like you have spent a lot of time & effort there! I was bad today----went to a Lowe's that opened up Fri. in our area and bought another hydrangea---the good news is it looks like the one I bought at K-Mart, & it's hardy---blooms on old & new wood.
Thanks, Victor! I'll tell him.
Bill - because it was only going to be only a single stone wall and the soil under the wall was new and soft, he decided he only needed to press smaller stones into the soil for his base - unlike when he builds the larger walls. We are limited to the stones we have on our property, and so he spaced the largest stones about every 4 feet and at the curves and "corners". He then used the medium and larger stones as the ground-level base above the stones that had been sunk into the ground. He spent most of yesterday scouring the property and lifting stones of all sizes from wherever he found them. He's been moving them all around all day. LOL
Marilyn - good for you....not bad.....you just rescued a homeless hydrangea. Hooray!!!
Bill - he said he is going to press those smaller stones in that area into the soil more. They will mostly be covered by the gravel also. He says, "It's a work in progress." LOL
i understand the need for good stone - the wall looks good, as he mentioned i would just bury those under the larger stone so they can not be seen - it sounds like if i'm able to make it to the ru nothing comes home with me? :)
Thanks for cheering me on, Louise! Doug said, "Didn't you just buy a hydrangea?" Nongardeners do not understand!
Bill - good progress is being made on the wall now.... I do hope you can come in September!
Marilyn - hasn't Doug heard that hydrangeas are among a few plants that just multiply on their own on the way home from the garden store? Funny how they even turn into different varieties! I'm looking for a very small variety of hydrangea for our new garden. Are there any that are for zone 4 that stay really small? I haven't really done a search yet, but I have the perfect spot for one now.
Today we slashed our hedge of burning bushes down to practically nothing. If I had my way, they'd be gone, but Hank doesn't want to do that. They went from really full and about 6 feet tall down to about 18 inches at most. They were getting leggy and blocking my view....heaven forbid!! LOL
You are taking on some big projects! Louise, that hydrangea I bought is a small one ---2-3 ft, & although it says zone 5, it does bloom on new wood---it's called Forever & Ever Together, & it came from Lowe's.
Marilyn - Hmmmmm - I'll check that one out....sounds like a possibility for my garden! I'm close to "done" (yeah, right!) on the projects. It has just taken so long to be able to get out there and do anything, so it seems like a lot, but really isn't. Now it's time to do some flower bed weeding. The rash of company begins next weekend, so no work will get done after that starts. I hope they like the big areas of dirt and grass seed in our front yard. LOL
Great looking blue spruce, Bill. Is it a dwarf?
Marilyn, you look like you've been busy. Oh, I will be coming to your RU most likely. I haven't checked to see if you have a thread started for it. Been way too busy.
Anyone know if Candyce will be having another RU in Oct. like she did last year? I know she was wanting to, but I haven't heard anything more.
Karen
it is semi dwarf Karen - can get to be 10-12' tall and wide - i will keep this one smaller than that.
Not me having the RU, it's Louise! But anyone who wants to stop by my (very weedy!) gardens is more than welcome!
