Contrary to many comments, siberian irises also get borer. If you pull straight upwards on a stem & it comes right up, you can be sure that borers are in the clump. It is more difficult to find them in the beardless, but it is a native pest of I. versicolor. Plants with the roots in water are less apt to have them. An early study showed that the versicolor growing in streams did not have the pest.
What have you ordered for 2009_Part 8
I wish I had a straem! I would love to have a large planting of versicolor and fulva. Thanks for setting me straight on the borers! : )
Your JI's are way ahead of mine....very few buds have formed as of yet here. I love that pinkish-puple one and the blue one looks like it will be a stunner!!
Its so odd how yours are later. I didnt think you were that much north of us.
These are new plants this year, well the Prairy Glory purple one is.
The Blue one is Ensata planted last fall.
We just rid of our 40 degree nights so that might be why. It seems due to the rain everythiing seems later this year but much more lush!
Oh and I was scrolling through the thread and for some reason Wha's comment about losing a Hardy 4 oclock from HCG stood out. I wanted to mention that I tried growing those from seed and never had success. I remember searching and searching for info on those when I had failed and I remember reading somewhere that they will not grow here.Something with elevation I think. I myself had been tempted to order those from HCG but thought about my past experience. So although I have to agrre I wouldn't recommend HCG in the future, and probably won't order from them again. I think your Hardy 4'oclock might not of had a chance here in NE. On a happier note my seedling Verbenas that I grew myself from my own collected seeds which was an experimentof sorts,is showing signs of blooming soon. : )
I have Sienna sunset and was under whelmed with it until all the buds bloomed. Its a sensation next to the Royal Purple sedum.
Your BlackBirds are teriffic.
Very nice collages, Jo Ann---the JIs are going to be something---and the sienna sunset is also a great color---may have to try it if it proves hardy.
I like that Sienna Sunset. I ordered it this year, but it hasn't done much yet. Will see how it does, and I hope it proves hardy for me. I got Limerock Ruby last year, and though it was a great performer and bloomed it's head off, it died on me. I'm not the only one who has had that experience with that one.

I had heard many new Coriopsis verieties dont make it more than 2 years.
I also have a threadleafed Sweet Dreams I'm not too thrilled with. Its really floppy, doubt I'll replace if anything happans to it.
I refuse to be consigned to daisies and geraniums in order to have a garden with much veriety
Love those collages... wondering if that is a poppy or a peony - Post #6748530. Very nice!
Its annual poppy ,direct sowed Dec2008.
Flemish Antique.Needs support really topheavy
Yes I have heard that a lot of coreopsis aren't hardy. I have one that was sold as the species Coreopsis rosea and it spreads quite quickly. It has been hardy here since I planted it in 2006. Although it has quite smallvery light pink flowers. If Sienna Sunset is any where near as vigorous, I may end up ripping out the Rosea and replacing it with it.
Meredith your coreopsis sounds just like mine.
Jo Anne, was it you who had gotten some Lollipop gerbera daisies earlier in the season, or was that someone else? I bought one this year, got 2 blooms on it, and now it's just doing badly. Maybe it likes drier weather, as the buds just rot and don't get a chance to do anything. I'm very disappointed in it. Glad I only got one.

I am not one to like doubles, very few but I really like that one!!!
I know when I began my hunt for Daylilies I liked I wanted no part of doubles. When I saw that one though,I decided it was such a pretty color and so delicate looking I liked it anyway. : )
It is and I like the blending of the colors . I own 'Siloam Double Classic', 'Zella Virginia', and 'Over the Top' . Over theTop was a gift and it didn't double for me the first 2 years and I liked it just fine. But last year it did and I really don't love it. lol
That BERRY BANANA CUPCAKE is very pretty, and I just love FRANCIS JOINER. I have the latter one.
Karen
Really liked both of those DLs, & I don't care for doubles either----have no spiders...yet.
Do you have many daylilies Robindog? I have about 700-800.... If you don't, maybe you should not start... it's a vigorous addiction! lol!! I think I have more than I have counted as my computer crashed last year and I lost my inventory list. I have added about 75-100 per year I think for the past few... Another good looking double is Lucky Pierre. Hopefully I will get a pic of it this year (lost pics too.. lol)..
wow that is a lot of daylilies!!!
Way too many... since I make seeds and only use mostly the newer plants, I need to get rid of a few hundred at some point.. lol! I shipped out a ton this spring and it didn't seem to make a dent in the garden..
So now I can show DH how many you have and he doesn't look at me sideways with my 300 any more!! lol
Whoa---that's a whole lot of DLs, Leighton----I have about 60---gave some away to my son a few weeks ago----my perennial beds are pretty full, & I have too many gardens to take care of now- (never let my DH hear that!)--of course, DLs pretty much take care of themselves. Have been very tempted by the lily auction, & won 3---'Carnival Mask' is budded, can't wait to see it.
Yes, DL's are very addictive. I have over 900 named cultivars, not counting all the ones I've added this year. Not only that, but I have hundreds of daylily seedlings from my late mother's hybridizing efforts. Like you, Marilyn, I have way more gardens than I can take care of, but it still doesn't stop me from adding more, and though DL's don't need much care, they don't weed out their own beds. LOL! Too bad for that!
Karen
Yes too bad they aren't weed free plants.. lol!!
Okay I think I am addicted to DLs, and I just started buying them this year. I am finding myself wanting to order more when I wanted to be done for the year! I only had a handful of ones that I picked up at local places. It seems to me that there are so many more that you can order that are gorgeous that I wouldn't even know existed if it wasn't for the web. I have quite a few wishlists going for which ones I want to get, when I get some more $$. : )
It started when one friend gave me a few ... no names.. then the nursery shopping.. then I realized there were more .. then I got introduced to the LA .... history from there.. lol! I probably bought around 100 of them every winter... Winters are long... I'm not big into indoor hobbies... so........ LOL!!
I'm so sorry that Thom got me started in the LA---well, not really! DLs grow so easily, & last so long they're worth it.
LOL! Yup, that's how it gets started, alright!
