What have you ordered for 2009_Part 8

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Robin, that is interesting about your iris.

IrisMA, thanks for clearing that up about the scapes/stalks thing.

Patti, what a massive haul! And fantastic prices for those. I sure don't mind waiting for perennials to mature, not at those prices. Is that Walker Farm in Dummerston? I Googled it, and that was the only Walker Farm I came up with. I would love to make a trip up there someday, though I'm thinking it could be a 3-4 hour drive for me.

I just ordered several things from High Country Gardens on the 25% off sale. They have quite a few things offered on that sale. Here's what I got, and will be shipped next week:

Agastache cana 'Rosita' http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/11819/
Agastache neomexicana http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/11813/
Agastache 'Ava' http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/11821/
Coreopsis 'Jethro Tull' http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/37913/
Gaillardia aristata 'Amber Wheels' http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/53247/

I planted a few things this weekend, got a lot of weeding done, did mowing today, and yesterday I potted up a bunch of things to sell and also to bring to Boojum's round-up. I have coreopsis and Verbena bonariensis seedlings, a few seedlings of Agastache 'Golden Jubilee', which looks like it's come true to seed, a bunch of chartreuse lemon balm, etc.

Karen

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love them all Karen!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I know the plants from them are small, so I don't expect much till next year. Can't wait!

Karen

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Nuts, I hope Ava does well for you. I got her last year and she is sensational. Sad to say she did not make it through the last winter. Boo, hiss.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

OMG You guys must have acres and acres to plant in.
Keep on truckin I say.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my Firebird and Tutti-Frutti AGs did not return ... the apricot sprites i grew from seed did not as well

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

OH !!OH!!!
I might be in trouble next year. Apricot Sprite from seeds is doing great.
Any idea why it didnt return?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

super cold winter maybe??... last year was the first time I tired to plant a few in the garden.. most years I just grew them as annuals in containers... but I took the whole container and just dug large holes towards fall... maybe they were not rooted deep enough

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Those sound like good reasons,thanx

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am going to stick a few in the ground this year and see how it goes... last year i also took cuttings from non flowering stems... they rooted fine but met death in dec. when I forgot to water... OOPS

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good luck with you order at HCG Karen - last year i ordered a bunch of stuff from them and 30% did not come back this spring do not think i will order again unless it is something i can not find elsewhere.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Remember our chances of semi hardy plants overwintering has a lot to do with their first winter. If the winter cooperates it helps a lot. Chances are best if the plant is planted as early in the growing season as possible so it has time to get established. Whenever I want to try something that is marginally hardy I make sure I get it in the ground asap. : ) This is also the reason I grow stuff from seed, I figure if I plant 100 plants of something, one of them should be strong and hardy enough if any will. My agastache rupestris did wonderfully it's first winter and last winter was very cold even for here and I noticed I lost a few. However I had so many that i still have a good amount. I figure it is for the best because now when I grow new ones from seeds they'll be from the toughest plants. : )

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Meredith i'm off to mixed borders today - 11.9 miles as the crow fly's - my wife came home last night and a co-worker had mentioned them to her as well as a couple hosta's to look into - coincidence i think not!

will not get the hosta's there though as Mason Hollow is having a sale this weekend with free hotdogs, ice cream, and promises to have their nice dog around. they have a jm i really want and i assuming it will be small which will be perfect for training to grow on a trellis.

Thomaston, CT

I like the part about having "the nice dog around"! Since I have one of each, I'm sure everyone hopes it's the nice one I have out! Karen, Dummerston, VT is not far from Boojums---maybe a quick trip before or after! I wish I had luck with the agastaches, but I don't---once, I had one return, but only for a year. I was thinking about ordering some bulbs, but the garden I need them for is in such a flux right now----I need to get a better plan down first!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

You are probably there now! Have a wonderful time. I love it there, that Mason Hollow sounds fun! I'm going to look them up and see how far it is.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Meredith you have gotten me in TROUBLE!

Can not believe i did not know about mixed borders before. my wife called me while i was there and said to have fun and try not to spend too much. well in comparison to what i did not come home with i succeeded.

another jm atrolineare or ribbonleaf maple that was reasonably priced, a creeping blue spruce, and a mary crawford Ligularia that i have been meaning to get.

left behind was another jm that almost made the ride and a bunch of other stuff including another little alberta spruce variety, a korean maple, and more.

also looked at a couple hosta's that were HUGE although i can get three for the price of one at mason hollow nursery. which should not be far for you it is just past brookline and on the same road as peter's sugar mill or something close to that.

patti start saving your pennies. they also had the red majestic HLWS

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Anyone else receive a $25 off card (on a $100 order) from Garden Crossings? It could be because I did not order from them this year. First time in many years.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Maybe they should send it out to people that have never ordered from them(how cool would that be???)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

5 billion cards??

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Sure, 42 cents to send out if they get back 1/2 the business each order of $75( + shipping???) they'd make a fortune.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Stimulus plan!

South Hamilton, MA

first yr. 'Do Tell' peony from Klehm's had a tiny flower & very good growth, I said 'good plant & see you next yr'.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

IrisMA please go to the Garden pic thread. There are iris questions and we need your help. Thanks mucly.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I got the card and ordered.
Its not THAT big a deal when other nurseries are haveing 50% off and 35% off.
GC 's 25% is good on an order of $100.00.
I would have taken a pass except waht I bought paid the shipping, and their plants are good.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Bill I am so glad you liked it there! Congratulations on your finds. : ) I am going to try to get to Mason's Hollow this weekend - I love going to new places. Thanks

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

meredith i'll be there late saturday morning for a hot dog. the hostas are not as big as the ones are mixed meadows. my wife wanted me to look at one called blue umbrella at mixed meadows which is a large/giant hosta that can take some sun. at mixed meadows theirs were huge although they only had maybe 6 stocks per plant and were +$30 i believe. Only $11 at mason hollow which will be much smaller plants i'm sure.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I tend to buy the smaller plants myself. Less $$ is better, then you can expand your collection quicker! : ) Of course if it is something I can't find any where else I am willing to pay more. : )

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well i can tell you that there were plants there that i have bought on line that are bigger and less expensive - like the golden smoke bush and blue shadow fothergilla they have. really a nice assortment of plants that you normally have to find on line.

they told me after every third purchase you get a 10% discount - i asked her why she waited till AFTER i bought my three items to tell me:) in the words of the great gov in california "i will be back"

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I wish I would have remmebered to tell you about that discount program! Sorry, I had thought of it too but it was after you'd already left. I figured you'd find out when you were there, I think part of the thing I like about it there is how massively planted it is. It gives great sparks to the imagoination. Did you meet Penny the chicken?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

no i did not - just a friendly old yellow dog

Thomaston, CT

Someone in art class was telling us about a nursery called Shakespeares Gardens, in SW CT--anyone been there?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

So I guess I will be going off to Mixed Borders on my next trip to Vt. I have printed out the map already. Thanks

I took a trip out to the farm here to pick up 5 small lavender plants for a bed outside the deer fence which I read they won't eat, along with a six pack of red snapdragons for another bed and some replacement veggies that got chomped by a bunny. I found they had some bulb fennel starts which I failed to get started as seeds this spring, so I bought 4 of those. I love it. I found a double white poppy (Papaver somniferum) in bloom in a sea of mixed colors, so I grabbed the only white one and hope it will set seeds for next year. It will look a little lonely out there by itself, but I want an army of them next year from self seeded one.

The farm stand called Walker's Farm is on Rt 5 /10 - take I 91 north to exit 3 Brattleboro and go toward Putney Vt. The nursery is on the right a few miles from the exit well before you get to Putney. Nice folks. Also a nice nursery called Newfane nursery on Rt 30 about 10 -12 miles from exit 2 off I 91. There is a nice farm stand next door with some plants too called Dutton's. And then there is the Olallie day lily farm which is a short detour off Rt 30 before Newfane, 2 miles up the hill , through my village of Williamsville and across a covered bridge for a couple of miles at most and on through South Newfane (don't blink) for about a mile on Auger Hole Road. There are signs on Rt 30 and again at the fork in South Newfane ( don't bare Rt- but go straight at the fork which is Auger Hole Road) They are up the road on the left. They have a nice web site with good directions. They dig dl's to order and sell as clumps. Open Thur-Sunday for sure and maybe all week in season. They are all nice independent small nurseries with interesting plants and the regulars. I wish I could be at Boojum's this next week end, but we have dear friends coming so I must stay here. Boojum goes to them all. That is how we met on DG when she mentioned them as some of her local favorites. There are over the mountain short cuts to them all if you like back roads. Patti

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I got the card also Victor. I did order from them this year and I will use the card. Their stuff is pricey but great quality.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I was wondering if they still had that dog. I didn't want to jinx it, he 'is' old isn't he. : ) I can't believe you didn't see the chicken pen? They make sure to ask if I saw it if they don't recognize me. Maybe just because I always have my kids in tow. There is one segregated from the others. I was told she is the lowest in the pecking order, so she can't be with the others. I am pretty sure her name is Penny. The pen is on the other side of the Hostas. But it is the stock Hostas, I am so bad I walk around their none retail areas to make sure they aren't hiding anything I really wanted. I'm sure I could talk them into selling me it if I did. ; )

(3) Nikko Blue arrived today from West Coast Plants and Grasses. They look great!

The (3) Pinky Winky, which arrived over a week ago from van Bourgondien (resistance is futile), are starting to take off. They look great, too! Planted the Asiatics ('Tinos') but still have to get the Crocosmia 'Lucifer' planted.

I still have to get into the ground all these perennials:

Hosta Mouse Ears
Hosta NOID
Daylily Stella D'oro
Iris 'Grape Orbit'
Iris 'Banbury Ruffles'
Syringa Vulgaris 'Royale'
Coreopsis 'Baby Sun'
Yarrow Schillenberg Gold
Shasta Daisy

Oh yeah .... There are 4 or 5 different kinds of Astible and a Red Maple in that photo above.

I also have a bunch of hostas to get into the ground.

Didn't take shots of all the iris and columbine waiting to get planted.

WNYwillieB, I think that looks like a grand collection to add to any garden. Well bought! I need to order some replacement Japanese Maples today. Some looking not so good or maybe as someone else said "extra dead".....Patti

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Patti ....

Guess what?? They were ALL donations or trades!!

Ouch .... extra dead sounds painful!!

Here is a shot I found of the Pinky Winky twigs bursting to life!! They are in the three green pots in the foreground center bottom.

They are coming on awesomely.

I can see, though, how less learned gardeners might kill something like this arriving in the mail!
