Propagation part IX based on my experience

You need to look into instructions for making garden windchimes to put in your newsletter. They aren't hard to make at all and for a lot of people they are a joy to listen to.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

flowerfantasy, your suggestion on windchimes is great! Thanks so much.

Thanks ! I have been making them myself for a few weeks now and it is really enjoyable and to be able to see the results is great.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Post a picture and instructions please. I am curious.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't have instructions as I just started putting them together as I would like to see them. I just looked at one that I had and saw that there wasn't any reason I couldn't make one myself

that is beautiful. I especially love the shells and using the star fish to hold the rest was a great idea.

It isn't the best of pics as I had my table so cluttered it wasn't funny. I have got one that I will get a pic of and put it up for you to see. I think it is the best one I have done for an amateur

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

looking forward to seeing it.

HI Everone, hope all is well. I have been trying to avoid the heat and I have also been fighting a really bad spinal flare up. I haven't been outside for about 4 days, if DH hadn;t watered for me, everything would have died.

I was hoping to get outside a bit this week and plant a few things, but I will rest instead. I am sure I can find things to do indoors.

In the meantime, my hibiscus are all blooming and it is gorgeous around here. I will try to take some pictures and post later on.

See Ya, Linda

I think its about 20 dollars but I thought I might through that out there. Of course it would make a great christmas or birthday gift for the ole wish list.If you are like I am they all ask so what do you want???
I hope everyone is having a great morning

Well, I am no longer lost. Somehow I got bumped and I was not getting any notices of the forums. I thought maybe my dues were not paid. LOL.

I am so sorry Linda that you are having back pains. Nothing worse. My back is always much worse in the humid damp heat than it is in the wintertime. Not that I can explain it but it seems to happen.

I too am having a great time with my new hibuscus. I just bought it from Logees and it is blooming like a good girl. I will try and send a pic today after I get my old butt moving.
I am so glad I found you guys again. I felt so alone and lost. Hugs.JB

JB maybe lost but never alone.

HI everyone, I just wanted to check in. My back/spine is doing a little better, I am still just kind of taking it easy.
Several of you know what happened, but for those who don't, I was in a head on collision and although I wasn't "hurt" at the time, my spine suffered damage that didn't show up right away. I also have a spinal stenosis which is a narrowing of the spaces between my spinal cord and the vertebrae. As a result, now and then things begin to swell and put extra pressure on the nerves leading from my spine to other extremities. I have had 3 spinal surgeries in less than 3 years and the Dr. wants to do another one. (I am totally opposed.) Anyway the swelling is now what is flaring. I don't know what causes it, but I do know that the only thing that helps is rest and antiinflamatory drugs. pain killers are useless because they don't work on nerves and the drugs that do work for nerves, leave me incompacitated.
on a happier note, I did take some pictures of my hibiscus yesterday ( probably the only thing I did) and I will post them this afternoon.
I hope everyone is having a great week and the heat isn't killing everything.
I will check in again when I can.
Linda

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Linda: I am sorry to hear about the accident. I knew you were down just not the why at the moment. Take all the time you need. I have an idea of whats going on and I would not wish that on my worst enemy. You are in my prayers.
Dave

Linda,
I had back surgery about 5 years ago and I have 2 titanium rods on each side of of my spine. I have a problem with my hip and spine doing the same thing. If it gets really bad I end up having to have steroid shots. I ask the Dr what caused it and he told me I was doing something in some way that was irritating the nerves causing the swelling and pinching of them. He said just normal daily activities will cause it too.
Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Oh my gosh you all, I feel so bad for you. Years ago i had a vertebrae that was disconnected from my spine and would slide around and pinch the spinal cord. Yes, anti-inflamatories were the only thing that would work. I took Indocin for 20 years and all of a sudden I got a perforated bowel. The drs blamed it on the Indocin. However, in the mean time some years earlier the loose vert fused to the rest of the spine. The dr. said he had never seen such a clean fuse. It could hardly be seen on the x-ray.

But, I was taking the indocin for arthritis and it was the only thing that worked. Since my bowel surgery I am on hydrocodone for the arthritis. It makes you wonder how much pain and discomfort our ancestors went thru without all of the wonder drugs doesn't it.

My heavens ladies, I will pray for you all. Hope you recover quickly and can get rid of those pain pills. They are nothing but trouble. Hugs. J

This is a pic of my Untamed Heart that my kids got me for Mothers Day. I got the gift certificate from Logees and I went wild. I will keep showing you what I got as they bloom. She is just a baby, but she is a real beauty and I love the brilliant red. Enjoy

Just taking a quick break at work and was checking in.

Oh may folks are we all falling apart..... LOL

I sure will prayer for fast recovery for all those back aches.

I'm having a problem with Japaneses beetles and I'll post more tonight when I get home as I'm about to pull my hair out with them. Finally resorted to chemicals which I've never used before... Bayer 3 in 1. It seems to have helped some but my spiderworts are still being attacked. Guess I'm going to have to cut them down, but then I'm afraid if I do the stinkin beetles will go to some other plants.

See ya'll later with some pictures.

Yes we are the walking wounded thread. Its kind of strange that we all have back issues. stenosis is not fun. I sometimes wonder how I keep it all straight.

Good morning everyone: Looks like another round of am thunderstorms. some places got upto 10 inches of rain yesterday. we got a couple of inches. and more thismorning. I hate the storms rolling through because it really rocks my world and I don't get anything done but pain meds and trying to sleep. when we are asleep I feel no pain.
Oh well enough whining from me. I did get this pic today. Yazoo Cinamon stick.
I hope everyone has a great day Dave

Hey Dave you still here? I need you to give me some advice if you will.

I am trying to start some hard wood plants and I just can't seem to get them to take root. What am I doing wrong? I have to use old fashion ways of rooting cause I can't afford bubblers and all that kind of stuff.

Pawleys Island, SC

HI Everyone, I just wanted to check in. I promised pictures of hibiscus and then never posted. Oops. I am doing a little better. My body aches but thankfully it is not unbearable. I keep trying to tell myself " pain is my friend, pain is my friend..." but there is a little voice in the back of my head that just screams "liar liar, pants on fire!"
LOL.
Anyway, I am going to get outside this morning and try to pot up a few small things. I hope everyone will have a great day, Linda

Glad to hear you are somewhat better Linda. I for one can't say that today. I hurt so bad I can't hardly move From the shoulders down. :((((((((((((

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

FF sorry to hear you are hurting. Linda I agree Liar liar pants on fire. Of corse pain also says we are still alive and the oposite of that is not an answer either. Pretty flowers. My little rain lilies have been blooming for me. and of course the polinator in me just had to try them last year.It worked so I did all the flowers i could catch. I will have a bumper crop of them. see the pic. It takes 3 years to bloom I think.... Yea I know their I go using the brain again...LOL
FF Ok what are you trying to propagate? what Have you done in the past? What kind of cuttings are you taking (i.e. green wood hardwood)?

Thumbnail by Pughbear7
Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Green hardwood. Pussywillow and rhododenron. This is the first time I have tried to root any. I have had them in MG water and then plain water and they haven't done a thing except die. I took the cuttings and at the joints and then scraped the soft wood bark off as I was told to do and put them in water.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

HI FF: I don't understand why the pussy willow did not take. They are suposed to be so easy. Have you tried a rooting hormone in soil? I do my azaleas that way and keep them misted in a shaded spot. It takes a long time to get them to ge but they do. I think it was like 6 months for my last trial batch. I took a tray ao 3 per cell in like april with the strongest mix of dip-n-gro so I am hopefull these will take as well.
If you still are having trouble this winter you might try the 2 totes together method. Its where you fill one with soil and plant into the soil. Then you fasten the other tote as a roof over the 1st one. The trick is getting them to line up and stay together. You could use a huge tote and just a couple of inches of soil in the bottom to root in, leaving room for the tops to grow. I will look up rhododendrons l;ater today. I hope this helps.

I rooted my mom some pussy willows in water. I didn't scrape any bark off the cuttings either. I don't think it's necessary to scrape them. Just cut them off and put them in water in a sunny window. That's what we did anyways.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, I'm back....

So the aches and pains continue, what a shame, will heres to hoping that they will calm down more so you feel better, if they just won't quit.

Went back into the ENT Dr yesterday, not fun he found some scar tissue on one side of my face and had to remove it..... this was worst than the surgery!!!!! Sore today and not suppose to bend over for a few days, well there goes working in the garden this weekend...

The beetles seem to have let up a little, don't know if it was the Bayer 3 in 1 spray or not.

Does anyone know (this is my first time using a chemical in my garden) how long it takes for this to be effective? and I only sprayed the most effected plants, I'm really worried about the bees. I've not found any dead ones laying around but I see some of the honey bees on one plant (spiderwort) and I'm feeling terrible that I'm killing them to.

This is why I don't use chemicals. I'm such a pantywaist worrying about hurting animals.
Janet

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Well I still have them in water so I guess I'll wait a while longer. I know my sister roots hers in just plain water and has no trouble. I also have some Monarda in there trying to root it also. Some of the branches on it got broke off when the cats decided they wanted to play ,so I just picked them up and stuck them in water too. Do you know if the take well this way or not?

Dave the azaleas and the rododenron are from the same( species?) so I would assume they would be the same as far as rooting goes.
