If you still are having trouble this winter you might try the 2 totes together method. Its where you fill one with soil and plant into the soil. Then you fasten the other tote as a roof over the 1st one. The trick is getting them to line up and stay together. You could use a huge tote and just a couple of inches of soil in the bottom to root in, leaving room for the tops to grow. I will look up rhododendrons l;ater today. I hope this helps.
