Dave:
you really are experiencing summer weather and up here we are still in the 60s at night and just into the 70s during the day. I'm not knocking our nice temps but it sure makes it hard on some of the plants as they don't know what they should be doing, blooming or shutting down for fall......
Well, back to work for me tomorrow, oh how I dread it as they have the A/C running at 60's which sets my sinuses off...
No word on a job for DH and so we wait and pray to see what the Lord has in store for us next.
Night all
Janet
Propagation part IX based on my experience
Jnette, I work with wire too. I have a friend who is a goldsmith and she is teaching me to work with gold now too, so it is a lot of fun.
JBerger, She spoke!!! My sweet little blue quaker broke her silence last night with a loud "what doin?". I was so happy to hear her talk again. my son whined because it was loud, but oh well. I am happy. It broke my heart when she was so traumatized.
The others have all seemed to move on. I am really torn about selling my breeders, but I need to do it. I don't think I will sell the quakers though, they are way too much fun and hubby's complaining that we can't go anywhere isn't just because of the birds, there are 2 dogs, a cat, a lizard and a snake that tie us down just as much as the birds.
Janet, I will keep you and your hubby in my prayers. God always has your best interest at heart though so don't worry. ( easier said than done right).
Dave, Thanks for the suggestion. Our animal control department here is more useless than matches in a hurricane. I have called a number of times about different animals and if it is wild, they will not touch it. Even if it dies in my yard.
It is really hot here too. I got up early today so that I could get outside, but I got on the computer instead. I have a few things to plant and the grass sure needs to be cut.
I am hoping for thunderstorms, but non are forecast for today, so I guess I will quit whining and just go do what I "oughta".
Have a wonderful day everyone.
Linda
Linda: What are you doing with gold??? My dad is a master jeweler, diamond setter and all the other stuff that goes with it. I love to do lost wax casting but don't have the energy for it anymore.
I am so happy the little fellow started dpeaking again. Its always tough to watch our loved ones...yes even pets ... go through a tough ordeal. I try to stick to cats because they are easy to leave alone. I have more trouble leaving my plants. I missed the am watering yesterday and the pm water saturday. almost lost one of my echinacea's. I guess I had better breakdown and buy a timer..LOL
Dave
Linda:
I hear ya on DH saying we can't go anywhere cause of my collies keeping us home bound. Back when we lived in Kentucky my next door neighbor who is like a second mom to me would always take care of my collies and I never worried about them at all.
Up here I don't trust anyone that would be take care of them, as I think they would forget to come out and change their water, (I'm a nut about fresh clean water 4 times a day during the warmer days) or if during the winter to come every 8 hours to let them out to potty.
So we stay put...LOL
Janet
We are into the upper 90's with heat index of 105+.....
Anyone know if pollen from hosta's, daylilies lose viability at a specific temp and higher? I know tomatoes pollen loses viability above 90 (I think its 90).
I am not sure how hot it is, but I am not working outside anymore today. LOL I just finished potting up all of the seedlings that I started in april and I am soaking a few more daylily seeds.
Dave,
I am not sure on the pollen from hostas, but the pollen from my daylilies doesn't open up until about mid morning. I tried some that I crossed late in the afternoon, but I don't know if any of those crosses were successful yet. I read on the iris forum about cross pollinating in the morning and afternoon, but not the heat of the day. I decided to try it and see if it works.
I have never tried casting gold, right now I am learning to forge gold and silver. I am having a blast.
Janet, I have a wonderful lady now who takes care of everything, but it gets so expensive. She has too many animals to care for. ( 60-80 birds, snake, lizard, 2 dogs and a cat). LOL I once hired someone who did not show. She would come and pick up my dog and take him to her house, but not feed or water anyone else. I only found out because we returned from a trip early once and there had been no food or water changed for any of the other animals. I had no problem letter her know exactly what I thought of her and " her professional pet sitting service." Never again!
On another note, is anyone starting summer seedlings yet? I am still stuck in daylily mode, but I also have some plumeria seeds that I plan to start this week.
I also need to go through my seeds and see if there is anything else I still need to plant. Next I start cuttings. Yippee! I love propagating.
Have a great day everyone, I am off to play indoors now. LOL
Linda
Linda sounds like you have a full day. don't think there is anyone lower on the scum bag scale than someone who mistreats animals. I think they should be drug into the town square and flogged.
forgeing sounds fun. I went through a 2 year course on jewelry but never got the hang of how to make a living at it so I retreated into what I do know Plants.
I just finished rigging up some misters for my greenhouse to water from. Now its turn the water on and wait. of course I will be looking closely to make sure I don't kill anything.
Its shower time and a nap. I am wiped out.
Stay coll everyone
Dave
Linda:
How terrible, which is exactly what I'm afraid of.
Well since we still don't know if we are staying or leaving our home, I'm not planting any seeds, beside this far north and this late in the season there wouldn't be much time for them to grow before the first frost comes in....lol
Dave how about a picture. Our garden club is in the process of maybe getting a hoop greenhouse and restoring it in order to start growing some plants that we could use for community projects. I love seeing how others rig up their greenhouses plus I really am a sponge when it comes to learning about what to do and not do in a greenhouse. LOL
Janet
Ok what do you want to see? here is a pic of some flats of seedlings. Currently i am in the process of getting my watering system situated so I am not on the end of a hose all day. I am using micro irrigation in the greenhouse to mist everyone. It seems to be working and It was only $20.00 to set up so I am happy...ish ...lol
More tomorrow
Dave
I am growing the seedlings up and then spliting them into 1801 trays of 18 _3.5" tear apart pots. Some will be sold as they are in plugs others split up. Once the trays get large enough to hold their own I take them outside to make more room. I hope to have everyone in 1801's by first frost. I will also be covering everyone with a pile of leaves this year.
I will post pics and ideas tomorrow...as I am nodding out at the keyboard...lol dragons tail is in bloom. he's so cute
Dave:
That dragons tail is a very nice flower to it. I'm still rather new to hostas as if you didn't have deep shade and I mean deep shade in Kentucky you just couldn't grow them and they live.... So I've had hostas up here for 2 years now. I now see what folks like these plants, not only do they have some incredibly beautiful leafs, color but some of the flowers are so unique.
well off to wash off mowing the front yard and then too bed.
later everyone
Janet
well we went and did it...we hit 100 today. Last june 100 degree this early was in 1992/
Today was our hotest today for us, I think they said 94. We are now under a server thunderstorm with heavy rain. Just paying that my garden makes it through ok. The garden needs the rain, but not all that whipping wind that is coming through.
Janet
We did get to 84 yesterday, but down near 70 today. I doubt that I will have a tomato this year. Jeanette
I didn't even get outside yesterday. It was so hot so early that I decided I would work inside. I am starting plumeria seeds today and then I am planning to pot up all of the things in the propagator so that I can start new cuttings. I have big plans, I hope they all happen. LOL
You all are in the hot zone and I am still watching it rain. Every day! I am sorry, but this is getting old. I am one of the people who needs sunshine and I am getting very depressed and anxious which is my only health issue if I do not work at it constantly. Not so much depression, I am really very content and happy, but anxiety. Bad thoughts, Horrible memories of death and dying, dumb crap that is over and done with and should be out of my mind, That is one reason I surround myself with God's beauty, flowers and people who love them.
It is beginning to get hot and humid here too but not too bad yet...the sun came out this morning and before I could call my friend and tell her, it was gone and they are pedicting storms and more rain later today.
The grass and outdoor plants are growing, mold, scale, all kinds of stuff that you do not need is growing also. I am about to just give up, go inside and watch TV, except all that is about death too......oh gosh, what next? Hope you are all well and in a better frame of mind than I am. I need to go to the beach. Too wet. WAAAAAAAA! Sorry, I just had to vent. Forgive me. I must go plant some cuttings.
Question for someone. I transplanted some black eyed susans and they look horrible. What is the secret......I thought if I cut off the foilage they may do better. Should I feed them something? They are in 3" pots and outside in the shady side of the greenhouse.
JB
JB:
I hear ya on needing the sun light. I'm that way too and it was really hard when I first move to northern OH as this area doesn't get much sun especially during the winter.
I'm sending ya sun rays that should show up soon for ya. Turn on a light and sit under it..... or try getting an adjustment for your back that will take the blues away fast.
Janet
Howdy:
Linda: I am glad you have the inside stuff to keep you going. I am thinking about the kitchen culture kits. It might be a good time to do a group thing. I personally am not quite financially able to do it at the moment. maybe I will get lucky and get one for my birthday next month. yea right... like thats gonna happen. DW is already asking me to scale back the # of plants I have. oh well what can we do???
yes its hot hot hot... 93 degrees with heat index 99 degrees. suposed to break a record 102. we might get some rain from the heating.
Rudbeckia does best in dry hot rather than the depressing rain soaked days you are seeing. I just transplanted some marmalade and they do not look real happy. I would give them some time. Are your seedlings inside or outside?
I am having to water twice daily just to keep from loosing everyone. please excuse the language but it discribes our current conditions. as an old boss said its dryer than a popcorn fart..
JB: I do understand the depression. I am thankful for our sunny days. I have nbeen getting up early and seem to have more energy than I did in the winter. I wish I could bottle some of our sunshine to send it to you. The best I can do is (((((HUGS))))))
@}-'-,-----
Dave
JB: I was watching a show from great brittan cash in the attic. They had a lady who had the same issues as you with the rain and gloomy weather. Its an actual medical condition. I don't remember the name but its a real condition.. we are all here for you and each other.
Dave
Well, I survived yesterday. LOL The sun came out and the rain did not happen until last night when we had violent storms for several hours. What a crappy night that was.
I was up at 5 a.m. and decided to put away some of the things that were frustrating me.
I packed up two projects I know I will not touch until winter and they are going into the barn in storage until I feel crafty. Or until my arm is better and I can do my needlefelting again.
It is now 9:30 and I am almost finished. I just need to get the stuff up in the barn. UGH.
I have also decided not to sell from the farm, it keeps me home all the time and the traffic is light so that will eliminate people coming in just to look and waste my time. I can accomplish what I want to online better. I really do not have the volume to have open all the time. I am almost sold out of everything just now. What I have left are beautiful plants but people now what perenials, not house plants.
Thank you all for the support yesterday. I needed that. BTW no one answered my question about the black eyed susans. Help me if you can. Thanks. JB
JB, About the blackeyes susan they should perk up in time . I have transplanted them and they did the wilt thing and they always came out of it. just make sure they get water when needed. Good luck
Jb: I would also make sure they get some shade in late afternoon. I move all my transplants to a spot where it gets shade from 2pm on. Rudbeckia is a tough plant once established.
Are you thinking of growing some perrienials? I am working on about 10 different perrienials to keep on hand. salvia, gaillardia, rudbeckia, buddejila so far are the base. It might take longer but I am starting most of these from seed. Most have germinated and I have started transplanting. I am going to take cuttings from most of the seedlings so I will have plenty of stock.
How full does your greenhouse get in the winter? how empty is it now??
Dave
Hi Dave.
Well, I have no idea what I am going to do this winter. My tropical stock plants are going to take up so much floor space, I am not sure how I am going to rearrange things. I need to start doing it nowbecause I am making cuttings and have quite a few flats of planted cuttings. I am not sure what I am going to do. I really do not want to get bigger, but if my SIL is out of a job next month (Large family owned nursery sold and closing due to death of the father) He is a VP in charge of operations so he stayed on until the end. But it he is out of work, he said he is thinking of putting up some greenhouses for perennials and if he does, I will keep you in mind. I have no idea what is happening because his father was sent home to die now and his job is almost over, so we do not talk much about the future. We live one day at a time.
I was hoping for some nice weather to work in the GH and rearrange things before it gets too full. It went from Winter to Summer with all that rain, now it is 80 plus deg. and humid. I am about to give up.
It sounds like SIL has a good idea. it will give you more room to do your tropicals while he does perrienials. I think it would be fun to start up a new big operation.
I do understand about one day at a time. I don't know how he carries on knowing his father should be there with him.
Dave
Morning People,
Where are you all? I thought maybe I was taken off Daves Garden completely because all the forums I am on are so quiet. I hope you are all well and enjoying the summer weather. I can/t imagine tne temperatures some of you are having. I wilt when it gets to 90, and you all have had way over that. It is time to drink lots of water.
I have taken a few days off and did some things that make me enjoy this time of year. The blueberries and raspberries are in now and they are so good. I had an old friend visit me this weekend and we went to the local picking farms and bought some of all of them.. NO, I did not pick my own. I especially love the local fruits and veggies fresh out of the fields. I feel so sorry for people who can not take part of that type of life and live in the cities with all the crime and crap.
Dave are you o.k. Your family? We are still living one day at a time with my SILs father.
I think I told you I planted some black eyed susans a week or so ago that we thinned out from around the house. Out of the thirty some I planted, I counted 23 of them that are showing signs of new growth. I am pleased. I did cut off the leaves down to just a few inches to give them a better start. I guess anyone can grow those things. They are like weeds here.
I miss your chatter, so until I hear from someone, I guess I will have to get to work. JB
Mornin JB and everyone else:
Well I have started trying to get outside early in the am so I can do more before I melt. I have had 3 lt of water already. Hydration is important (or how ever its spelled). I try to get inside b4 noon. as we have had over 90's for the last 14 days with heat index 105 and up. Once it hits 90 I really want my a/c.
Mom is doing well we are going to the lake this weekend to celibrate the 4th and a couple of birthdays DW is the 5th and mine is the 10th. we have a blueberry upick down the road from the lake we go to but its way to late for BB's here. its time for blackberries.
Congrats on the rudbeckia surviving. Its still a bit early to see how mine are doing. they seem to be doing well. the alaska shasta daisies are all doing well in their 3.5" pots I think I have 60. Boy I hope they sell well next spring. Any suggestions on pricing per pot? I also have echinacea coming on as well as. I have been trying so on the fly cross polination of my DL's no notes or tags its going to be guess what flowers. here is highland lord. I really love this flower.
I am reallly bummed as I can't find my wonderful disystron powder from home depot. :(~~~~
Ok Here is pic 2 of todays DL's. Betty woods I got both of these this spring and I am hopeing to use them as stock for hybridization program. BIL and Step son SS have been working on a french drain on the north side of our house. why they waited for the heat of the year to get started is beyond me. I have very little sympathy for them as they could have worked on this months ago when it was quite nice outside... but NOOOOOO.
I am hopeing to get a 2 timber high dayliliy bed for my parental plants to start a real hybridization program. I have way too many DL's so I need the bed space to play in and its a great spot for a DL bed, don't you agree?
Here is the trench. It already has carolina jasmine on a huge trellis. I feel fortunate as we have a gate on both ends of the house. I really hate it when you want something just on the otherside of the fence but have to walk all the way around the house to get it and then back around to use what ever you went after.
I am planning to do 2 - 2 ft 1 timber high beds on the south side of the house. Its where I hope to winter over all the new babies for next year. We still have to get the fence extended but its going to be great. Anyhoo here is the trench and my stepson Mike
thats about it for me this am... good thing as we only have 12 min. left...LOL
Dave
Glad to hear you are o.k. in the heat. The daylilies are beautiful. I used to have so many at my other farm but here we have none except what comes thru the fence at the meadow from the neighbors and they are all the same old orange ones. Nothing fancy.
I must admit I did not know the name of the BES until you mentioned it before, and I thought you were talking to someone else. Sorry to be so stupid but I am from Jersey, remember. Here they are Black Eyed Susans. LOL It is nap time here now. I just came in from the 93 deg. GH and am really tired. I was up at 5 a.m. today and have done my work for this day. Must get nails done this afternoon so a quick power nap is what I need.
Later. JB
I'm here and reading your posts JB and Dave. I just didn't have anything to add. For once. LOL.
I enjoy reading about the things you all are doing. We normally go out and get strawberries, u pick, but this year both Bob and I are laid up so they will have to wait until next year. I still have huckleberries (wild) that I bought from the local pickers. They are getting pretty expensive, $30 per gallon, but when I think about being out there in that hot sun and picking those little tiny berries I don't mind paying it.
Some of the local kids pick for college money. They clean them really good and pack them in gallon zip-lock bags. They freeze them on cookie sheets so you can pour out just what you need. Very well done.
Your daylilies are very pretty Dave. I just have the regular ones, Lemon lily, Pardon Me, and some others. Don't remember the names.
Your projects all sound interesting, but that is pretty hot to be out there working. But then, it could be worse, like 3 feet of snow.
We finally broke 80 degrees. I haven't even watered much other than the tomatoes. Still haven't given up on them. I guess I will put the clear plastic over the hoophouse along in September and maybe I will get a little extended season on them.
Jeanette
Sorry to hear that the heat has been so high. We are in the 60's, I'm never going to get tomatoes again this year. Year # 6 with no tomatoes. I just don't see how others up here get them to grow for them. To me if I was a tomato plant I sure wouldn't grow them, too cold to my liking...
We are still in limbo nothing has come up in the way of a job for DH, he will be taking a trip back home to Kentucky to see what might be down there.
I hate the thought of not staying put but life is what it is. You can bet I'll be taking all of my newly acquired plants from last year and this year with us. I'm on this new thing of trying to collect all of my seeds this year, just in case I'm not able to take my plants...
Well got to get busy with getting our garden club newsletter done, I'm running behind this month, just don't know what to put in it this month that would be interesting.
Anyone have any ideas or articles they would like to share.... if so you will get a copy of the newsletter once I get done with it.......
Janet
Gee Janet, I would think that reading from Dave's would give you a lot of ideas that your readers probably don't think of.
Jeanette
Yes and I've contacted some of them to see if I could use their stuff, and all but one, wanted money to use their articles or pictures. LOL
Oh well back to the newsletter......
Janet
Have you tried Kent in NC about the strawbale gardening? He writes articles for magazines. Mainly for the seniors. And disabled.
Good morning everyone, well the sprinkle/a little heavier rain is back again this morning...
Read the front page of the newspaper real quick and the news reports that Cleveland is loosing residents faster than any other major city.... what did they expect when all the jobs are leaving the area??? and the high cost of owning a home I believe we also hold the title for the most foreclosure on homes as well..... Just the stuff that I want to read that is going to make a wonderful start to my day... LOL
Jeanette Sure did and I was even entertain flying him up here for a club meeting to speak at, but flight times and his work schedule were in conflict. He is a wonderful guy, just really enjoy talking with him.
I picked up bits and pieces no major articles are catching my eye.... I'm going to try and finish it up on Thursday so I have today and tomorrow.... tonight when I get home I have to mow..... the rain is causing major grow spurt on the grass LOL
Janet
Good morning:
We seem to be fairing better than the rest of the country as far as the economy goes. Oklahoma city was voted the #1 resession proof cities. Our houseing prices are not like the rest of the world. here you can get a 2000 sq ft home for 130 - 200,000.00 just depends on neighborhood and details of the home. We got ours for little over 130k 2100 sq ft 3bd 2.5 bath 2 car garage. Needs some cosmetics but other than that pretty sound.
How about an article on gardening as a way to stretch the dollar by growing some of your own veggies. You are welcome to dig through the posts on this thread and use what you can for your newspaper.
Today is transplanting 101. got lots of seedlings to move up as well as some others that are driving me nuts as far as drying out way to fast between waterings.
ahh got one.... how to unravel the mystery speak of a seed catalog. whats the diff between determinant and indetermanent tomatoes? bush beans vs pole beans? snaps vs dry beans? common pests of the garden???
Hope this helps
Dave
Dave:
Thanks for the offers and suggestions. Most times I'm ok as I do my searches early and write for permission to use items, but this past month I was sidetracked due to DH loosing his job.... So I hope to be back on track.
Once I get the newsletter posted I'll post a copy of for yall to see and read, and I would love to hear your comments about the layout. I love designing and compiling newsletters. The club members enjoy it. When I first took it over it was a page and a half word document, now I try to keep it at 6 pages (due to postage) but sometimes it goes to 8.
thanks again.
Janet
ps Kent was the only one when I request articles that wouldn't hear of charging for it. True gardener he is... : ~ )
You might also look into a leanne in south florida. she is a teacher and does a lot with airiods (elephant ears) and tropicals. what dirrection does your paper go in? just curious
Dave
anything related to gardening, but that applies to our zone.... Tools, equipment, crafts for the garden almost anything, propagation, I try to make it interesting so that it is worth reading...LOL
