Hi JB, I am so sorry for all the wet stuff you are getting. And the infestation. That is really depressing. We have really nice weather and I have tons of plants to take care of (plant), but not enough energy. I had my other foot operated on Tuesday and the orders were to stay off of it. But you know how that goes I am sure.
My daughter and SIL are coming for a week, due in tomorrow so I am trying to clean the house and do the plants and everything too. An impossible situation.
Well, I better get busy. ttyl,
Propagation part IX based on my experience
Jeanette: Sorry to hear about the surgery... I hope this fixes it all up so yu can get on with life. Try to enjoy the help around the house. of course there is the 2 weeks after they leave of finding everything and getting it back to its proper home.
JB: I am glab they came through well. I always worry about the plants I send out. its a controll thing. just have to do my best and pray for a good outcome.
Dave
Hi Everyone:
I stumbled on this co-op and I think everyone needs to at least have a chance at 2010's newest plants hot off the press so to speak...lol
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1000961/
They have echinacea, heuchera's coreopsis, sedum and a few others ... I think. Anyway please look it over as it closes monday pm
Dave
Dave, when you have time, explain to me how these co-ops work, or is there someplace I can read about it? JB
Can someone give me a simple definition or the difference between
Cultivar and Family ......usually you get the genus, which I understand, but some plants only have a cultivar listed , especially here on DG and no family. HELP ME UNDERSTAND PLEASE. jb
Dave, That co-op sounds great, but I can't do it right now. I need to stick with hostas and daylilies and iris. Thanks a bunch though.
JB I am sorry to hear about all of your plants. I know how frustrating that can be.
I thought I had lost a clerodendron thomsonaie over the winter, but I never threw it away and it is finally beginning to come out!. Yippee, It isn't dead.
I need to get outside while it is cooler . So I will check in later on.
Linda
JB, my understanding is the family is the group of plants that the cultivars belong too.
(i.e. Daylilies are hemerocallis, but there are 1000's of different cultivars. I guess the easiest way to remember is the cultivar name is the same as the variety name.
daylily {red rum} is different from daylily {stella d oro}, but both plants are in the same family. ( daylily)
Good morning everyone:
All plants follow a specific breakdown as to where it fits family, genus, species and cultivar. Take Holly for instance. below is a specific holly page.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/70788/
Family; Holly
Genus; - Ilex
Species - cornuta,crenata, vomitoria
Cultivar - nana, pendulata, sky pencil, china girl
I tend to interchange cultivar with variety.
JB: Here is a link from DG admin on co-op's
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/583595/
I will try to explain myself once i get back from church. I have to many other conversations going on in the room which is confusing me.... shhhhh I hear voices...LOL
No problem Dave, that is what I was looking for. I understand it now. I was not sure who was doing what and where. Now I know. Thanks.. Save yourself some time and scratch this from your list of things to do.
Also, I think I have the cultivar understanding back on board now. I must have had a senior moment. Thanks gang for helping me remember. Hugs. JB
JB: I like to check the list from time to time throughout the year as they are always adding and expanding different co-op's.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/groupbuy/all/
To tell the truth thats how this thread got started. we were all from a co-op for propagation supplies. a few read between the lines and figuired out I knew more than I was telling and they liked how I explained things. Lorraine said I keep it on the kindergarden level (I think it was Lorraine).
Has anyone seen or chatted with her? She has been MIA for too long.
Dave
I don't think she is member any longer. No one has heard from her for ever or even Maggiedew to let us know how she was doing or what.
Sorry guys, I have been indisposed for the last few days. I take care of my 87 year old Mom, and on Friday she had a fall, a bad one. She is in the hospital with 2 broken legs, and a broken ankle. She is also a diabetic so there is that problem. Right now she is very confused, and hurting. She thinks I am mad at her and have put her in a nursing home which she has a terrible fear of. So my time is up at the hospital trying to convince her where she is. Of course she will have to go to a rehab home until the legs heal, but guess I will cross that bridge when I have to. I will try to be here for short times when I can. Meanwhile, All of you take care, be healthy, and I will talk when I can.
Lee
lee,
Sorry to hear about you Mom. Hope she gets well soon.
Boy Lee, that is awful. That poor lady. Pretty rough on you too. I know exactly how she feels. My dad was so afraid my mom was going to put him in a nursing home. Of course she didn't but it about killed her taking care of him.
Keep us posted and our thoughts are with the both of you.
Jeanette
Lee:
I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I'll add her to my prayers for a complete recovery. Say hi to us when you can and let your mother know that we folks here are wishing her well.
Janet
Lee take care of your mom. I think the whole group feels that life and family come above all else. You and your mom are in my prayers
Dave
Good omorning everyone!
Lee, God Bless you and your Mother. I've been there and done that and you will need any spare time you have to spend with the rest of your family. We will all be praying for you and your Mother. Stay well and keep your spirits up. Hugs. JB
Lee, I am so sorry. I will keep you and your Mother in my prayers too.
I didn't get back online yesterday. We had a racoon that cut my screens and got on the porch and killed 1 of my birds. We heard him early in the evening, but the dogs kept scarring him away. Then when we went to bed, he got on the porch and so at 1 AM, DH made a bolt for the porch screen doors. We thought that would work, the doors wouldn't open at all. Then at 5am, we heard on of the cages fall and sure enough the coon was on the porch trying to figure out how to get off. He couldn't get through where we bolted the door, so he ripped the screen. At 5 AM, I moved the remaining birds into the game room. He cannot get into the aviary, but my pet birds are on the porch for the summer. I don't know how to make it any more secure, so I will have to simply move my birds out when I am outside and In when I am in. It hurts my heart. I know the birds love being outside with the others.
Not much I can do in the garden today, so I guess I will be working inside.
Hope everyone has a better day.
Linda
That's awful Linda. How about a trap? Or do you have a lot of raccoons in the area? I don't know of too many things that can run them off. You sure don't want your dogs getting into a fight with them. Those long claws they have could tear a dog open.
How about cattle panels around the area where the birds are? If they were fastened down good enough I doubt that they could get thru them.
Jeanette
Oh Linda, I am so sorry about your birds. I do hope you find a solution. I too had coons when I had my bird farm and when I put the birds outside I always had the extra clips on the main door and the food doors so if they knock the cage over, they can not get out. But, unfortunately, the darn coons put their paws inside and kill the birds in the cage. I hate those little buggers. Hugs. JB
Hi Everyone: Mom is home today. she is doing quite well. She is taking one pain pill every 4 hours I am thinking she will back down on them this week. we are planning a weekend at the lake. Kimis going to do all the cooking and such.
I checked out one of todays feature articles. It goes over pollination in a broad sense.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2473/
I know we all love those humming birds.
Dave
Looks like a great start. I love to see pics Dave
We got that part laid down and then took up some of it so we could till where the flower beds are going to be. We will be taking the day off toady as we have a bit of traveling to do this afternoon . I will try to get more pics for you when we get back on it.
We lay out part of the frame work and then move it to get the other things done, but will be getting the rest of the frame work down here very soon. Yipeeeee !!!
Lee: glad to hear your mother is doing better.
Linda: I hurt for ya, I love wild life, except for times they just can't leave my small spot alone. Sorry about the lost of your bird.
When I was moving on Monday night something was moving through the grass at first I thought it was a snake, as I've been dealing with rather large snake in my front and around the side of the house flower bed, so not even thinking I turned the mower and ran it over. Then took a closer look and it was a mole, which has also been giving me fits in my new flower beds. Sorry to have done it, but.......
My next door neighbor traps all the raccoons, chip monks, birds and either destroyes them or relocates them to the national forest which isn't far.
Janet
If this little guy comes back, I hope to trap him and relocate him somewhere. I can't stand the thought of hurting it, but it certainly isn't welcome here.
I am starting more daylilies from seed today and planting a few other things as well. It is supposed to rain, but at least it will be cooler if it does rain.
I am also hoping to put together another propagator so that I can start more cuttings. So far, camellias have refused to root in it, but they take a long time anyway. I would like to start some azaleas and snowball bushes in it just to see if it is easier or faster than rooting them in sand. I will let you know how my results come out.
Here is a pic of 1 of the daylilies blooming today...
This one is Samar Star Fire. I think it is so striking.
Have a great day everyone.
Linda
Beautifull DL linda. How warm are you now?? We are mid 90's with heat index of 104. I just came in from doing a few things and I am wiped out. I have been trying to get my watering setup so I am not on the end of the hose so long.
Dave
Very nice Linda. I wonder why my posts are not showing up. Oh well, you know I am thinking of you. And your mom. And all the rest of you and your moms. Lee. Dave, I went back, way back and couldn't find out what is wrong with your mom.
Jeanette
Well my mom had breast cancer. all lymph nodes are clean the right one was clean but the left one was compleatly spidered throughout. Had she gone for the lumpectomy she would be in big trouble. she is up and moving quite well... going to the lake this weekend. DW is doing all the cooking and making mom take it easy. Nice filet and shrimp for fathers day...yummmy
Yesterday was kind of cool, but today it is supposed to be in the high 90's with a heat index of 106-110. I am planning to get outside very early this am. and try to get things planted. Hubby is watering for me. I would love to put an irrigation system in.
Jnette and Dave. I will have lantana ready to ship next week.
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday. Happy fathers day to all the Dad's.
Have a great day everyone. Linda
Linda: Thank you so much for doing the lantana for us.
That was really fast rooting Linda. Can hardly wait to see what you are sending. Hope you don't have any more raccoons.
Sure glad your mom is ok Dave. It will take her a long time to get her strength back.
How are everyone else's moms? Lee and linda? What is this a run on moms?
Jeanette
I have a mock orange that I would like to take cuttings from so how do I begin
I know to wait till after the bloom cycle is over but how long of a cutting and what is the best planting (soil) to use?
thanks yall, I'm having fun today playing out in the yard.
here is a find out of someones trash....LOL I've planted up some herbs.
Janet
HI Janet. I love your found treasure box. With the mock orange, I would wait until it is finished blooming, then take 6-8 inch cuttings. Cut them on an angle( I don't know why but that seems to help) Dip them in rootone and put them in sandy soil in the shade where they will be watered daily. Then wait and wait and wait. ( the hardest part for me).
Some people scrape the cambium layer off the outside, but I don't usually do this. I would probably take my cuttings this week, or until mid- july depending on when your 1st frost would be.
I hope it works for you.
Jnette, thanks for asking. Mom is doing better. She was given permission to do some things she wanted to do, so she isn't as frustrated now. She still has "episodes" though and those are frightening.
I haven't seen the racoon again, but I have taken everything off of my porch. The birds are living inside for right now, but I know that as they get adjusted, it will be very noisy and my son can't stand the screeching. I can put most of them in the aviary, but the two biggest will be house babies. The blue quaker still isn't talking. I noticed, she now has no tail feathers, so I think the racoon may have tried to get her too. She respons to me, but refuses to talk. This is one who talked incessantly too so I really miss her voice. I just thank God she is alive and he only got the 1 little budgie, if we had been away on one of our road trips, he could have killed them all.
Our heat index is well over 100 today, so I am staying indoors. I have lots to do though and when I pry myself up from here, I may clean house and then make jewelry.
hope everyone has a wonderful day. Linda
Linda, that is good news about your Mother. I am so glad she is recovering.
I am sure the racoon will return, so watch out for that little bugger. He knows there is more where the budgie came from. How sad for that little bird, but things happen and it was not your fault. I do hope your quaker soon regains her confidence. She has had such a stressful experience that it may take awhile. Now that she is inside she may be able to relax and not be afraid. Is she eating and sleeping normally? Can you cuddle and scratch her? Sometimes some human personal touching makes them relax. If of course they are used to it. LOL.
It is so funny you say your son can not stand the noise. People ask me how I stand living with these birds because they are so noisy. I don't even hear them. They have their busy noisy times and their nap times and then before bedtime they have another chatty session, but I do not even hear it anymore. I guess people who are not really "bird" people are those who think they are noisy. My son is a real pain in the butt when it comes to my birds and my dog. But you know what, he can tell his family what to do but he can not tell his Mother. That is for sure. I am still the boss.
He is a federal criminal law trial attorney and you know they are never wrong. So he thinks. LaLaLaLa.....anyhow, give that quaker a big hug and hopefully she will say thank you Mom.
The rain is still coming down and we had one day of sun, yesterday, the rest of the month it rained everyday. We finally got the grass cut and some outside work done. The barn roof painters got there yesterday and my retractable awning got installed. The list is getting shorter.
I took over 60 cutting from Jasmine yesterday and got them in the pots.I still have begonias, magnolia, gardenias and scented geraniums to cut.
Sales have been up this week both here on the farm and eBay. I sold out of Jasmine in 3" pots and only have 6 in 6" pots.
Hope you are all well. My Son in Laws father is still in hospice and it is one day at a time so the kids have been under alot of stress this week. There is a big family wedding today too and they took hospital duty while the others went to the wedding. The one nephew is going to take pictures and send it to the laptop so they can see it in the hospital. There are so many good things that these computers do for us.
Sorry to be so chatty. I have not been on for awhile for obvious reasons and wanted to check in and say hi and hugs to you all. JB
Linda: thanks for the tips on the mock orange. Yes I agree waiting is hard...LOL Also, glad to here your mom is allowed to do a little more. progress is a good thing. : ~ )
JB will be saying some prayers for your son in laws father. Yes to have our cell phones and computers helps to keep us all close.
Well I'm in for the night and man am I tried. But it was a good day out planting and planting. I'm almost finished planting all of the plants that I received this season.
Night all.
Janet
I am glad you asked about the Mock Orange 'cause I have a lot of them growing wild around here. They aren't quite as fragrant as the hybrids, but they are very nice. My SIL has wanted one for years but didn't figure he could move one from the wild so I will try to start one like you said.
Linda, my daughter makes jewelry too. She likes to work with the wire. What kind of jewelry do you work with?
Jeanette
Hi Everyone: sorry for the silience. Mom is doing great, we went to the lake for the weekend my lovely wife cooked all weekend. we had filets shrimp cocktail baked taters yummy.
Jeanette: you might try predigging a smaller wild one this fall and then next spring dig it up to move. I like to dig down about 18" all the way around the plant at the drip line. If you can't determine the dripline come out about 24" from the trunk.
I like to take a shovel to angel down around the plant to sever most of the lower feeder roots to let him recover from the initial stress. fill back in the area around the plant to move and mark it so you dig the right one next february/march. Water him well from now untill the winter freeze.
When you take the plant doctor the transplant hole with organic matter as well as a light feed. milorganite works well in this insance. mix it in the hole 2 - 3 hand fulls in the soil going back into the hole.
Keep watered well.
Linda: I am glad to hear your mom is able to get out and do some stuff. I know it leeds to a faster recovery.
Have you thought of animal controll? I know we had a stray cat attacking my kitty. they brought out a live trap and let me use it for a few days to catch the critter. I would think animal controll might help as racoons are a carrier of rabies. My other thought was telling animal controll its a huge cat attacking the birds. Just some thoughts. I know growers supply sells live traps that might help also.
Boy is it hot. 3 days next week 98,99,99 add heat index and ouch 108 +++ anything over 90 is too hot to me. It has made me change my scheduale to an earlier am and afternoon naps. I like naps.... I hope everyone had a great fathersday
Dave
